Full textThis PhD dissertation aspire to characterize the "Balanta Mané/Bejja" identity, which has been in constant reconstruction, including their ethno-politics dimension, cultural and religious matrix, and its fluidity over time and space. Historically, the presence of Islam, in particular the one disseminate by the "Màndinka, contributed to build up their identity, based on their opposition or resistance: "bàlan". The "Balanta" define themselves as "those who refuse" : in "absentia" of a specific identity, this operates as an identity label. The ancient history and the most recent conflicts have led the "Bejaa" to shape and develop their identity "on the border" between the Casamance and the north of Guinea-Bissau. The ongoing "mandinguization", present in this region for more than a century, affects both the "Bejaa" converted to Islam and the "Bejaa" pagan, and entails the reconstruction of the socio-cultural, political and religious institutions. Their identity strategies, collective and individuals, as well as their various form of resistance (for instance, the women's ones), when faced with the diffusion of Islam (disseminated by the religious brotherhoods, Marabous, or Muslim reformists) are other elements of their "plasticity" which reveals the "local construction" of the "ajaa" identity
