Resumé Cet article présente des narrations bijaa (balanta mané) sur le peuplement, les identités et les divisions territoriales du pays ajaa sur la rive gauche du fleuve Cacheu (Guinée-Bissau) et dans le Balantakunda (Sénégal). Dans ce cas particulier, la possibilité d’intégrer des sources orales et des documents écrits primaires permet de constater une continuité des transmissions depuis le XVIIe siècle à partir des observations des commerçants et témoins directs Lemos Coelho (1669) et Bertrand-Bocandé (1837-1848), des informations du commandant militaire et cartographe Graça Falcão (1894-1897), des Cahiers de recouvrement fiscal à partir des années 1920, et finalement des narrations bijaa sur la fondation des territoires et villages du Jaa. L’ensemble des perspectives, extérieures et locales, donnent l’idée d’une stabilité territoriale à long terme mais aussi d’une énorme fluidité identitaire au niveau des acteurs dominants, bañun/kasanga, mandinka, ajaa. La configuration territoire, sanctuaires, clans/lignages perdure, tandis que les identités ethniques des occupants et conquéreurs successifs se confondent ou superposent. L’article se veut une invitation à des enquêtes - en accord avec de nouvelles approches socio linguistiques (Lüpke, 2018) - sur l’unité culturelle et les mémoires orales partagées par de différents occupants du même espace qui ne parlent pas nécessairement la même langue.

Sur les mots castillans d'origine portugaise, le Prof. Rodrigo de Sá Noguiera écrit: "Il y a une série de mots castillans d'origine claire ou probable portugaise, que le Dictionnaire de l'Académie Espagnole dans la plupart des cas ou omet, ou considère comme d'origine différente". Ceux d'origine claire portugaise, ajoute cet étymologiste, sont ceux qui phonétiquement n'auraient pu avoir en espagnol la forme qu'ils revêtent dans cette langue, tandis qu'ils sont d'accord avec les règles de notre phonétique historique, existant, en outre, sous la même forme (p. ex. chato) ou sembllable (p. ex. follaje) dans la langue portugaise. Les suivants se trouvent dans ce cas: achantarse, achubascarse, afeitar, aldorta, brinco, barroco, canela, caramelo, cariño, chamada, chapa, chato, chaveta, chinela, chocal!o, chocho, chopa, choza, chubasco, chumacera, chus, chusma, cobra, conchabar, cortiña, desvaído, desvergoñadamente, fado, follaje, fuera, macho, malla, mermelada, morriña, nonio, pintada, vaivén, vergoña. Les vocables d'origine probable (et souvent sûre) sont les exotiques, lesquels, dans l'opinion de Sá Nogueira, citée plus haut, ont pénétré dans l'espagnol à travers le portugais. Cet auteur en étudie les suivants: abada, albino, almadía, ananás, bambu, banana, bengala, betel, biombo, bonzo, cacatúa, cachimbo, cacimba, cafre, carcunda, carimbo, catinga, cha, coco, cobra, cornaca, fetiche, jangada, junco, macaco, malagueta, mandarín, mandinga, mandioca, manga, marimba, monzón, naire, pagoda et palanquín. Il est certain qu'ils sont beaucoup plus nombreux, ainsi que l'on s'en rend compte par les ouvrages de Monseigneur Sebastião Rodolfo Dalgado et Georg Friederici. Quant au mot chapéu, dit le Prof. Sá Nogueira, il est difficile de garantir si l'espagnol l'a reçu du portugais, ou si le contraire a eu lieu, et c'est également compliqué le problème du mot castillan jeito, à acception differénte de la nôtre, raison pour laquelle ils n'entrent ni dans l'une ni dahs l'autre des deux catégories, c'est-à-dire, ni dans ceux d'origine claire portugaise, ni dans ceux d'à peine probable.

T he P oznań Society for the A dvancement of the A rts and Sciences. PL ISSN 0079-4740, ISBN 978-83-7654-103-7, pp. 7-19. Purpose: T he present paper aims at providing a detailed description of values and uses offered by the NAATA form - an analytic Mandinka construction formed by means of the auxiliary naa ‘come’, employed itself in the so-called ‘TA tense’, and the infinitive of the main “meaning” verb. In that manner, we intend to rectify an important lacuna in grammatical studies of the Mandinka language which have almost entirely ignored the issue of the NAATA locution. Method: A detailed map of the semantic content of the NAATA form will be designed, specifying its temporal, taxis, aspectual and modal implications, as well as certain textual properties. A ll the values will be illustrated by instructive examples provided by ten native Mandinka speakers (i.e. residents of Basse and neighboring villages: Manne K unda, Bassending, Mansajang and K aba K ama) and collected by the author in 2010 and 2011. Results: T he evidence shows that the meaning of the NAATA construction corresponds to a present perfect (resultative, iterative, inclusive, experiential and indefinite), to a past tense (immediate, recent, general and remote) and to a perfective aspect (punctual, terminative and ingressive; less commonly the locution approximates a simple past). A dditionally, the formation expresses certain modal concepts, such as non-intentionality, accidentality or spontaneity of a corresponding perfect or past event. A s far as textual properties are concerned, the NAATA form is found both in discourse and narration, being able in the latter case to introduce events of the narrative foreground. Conclusion: T he author demonstrates that the values displayed by the construction (with an exception of the modal senses) can be connected and a definition, which exceeds a simple inventory of uses, may be provided if one views the locution from a dynamic evolutionary perspective, i.e. as a manifestation of one of the developmental scenarios governing the grammatical evolution of original resultative constructions, namely as a realization of the anterior path. Furthermore, the modal senses of the NAATA form may be related to the anterior trajectory (and to its meanings-stages) if we make use of the evidential path, an evolutionary possibility which links the grammatical life of resultatives with determined modal domains. T his latter proposition, however, needs a more profound analysis and will constitute one of the research activities, conducted by the author in the future.

Abstract The present study, divided into a series of two papers, provides a detailed empirical description and cognitive-grammaticalization analysis of the meaning of a Mandinka verbal expression compounded of the non-verbal predicator be ‘be’, a verbal noun expressing a given action and the postposition kaŋ ‘on, at’ (so-called the Nominal KAŊ form). Method: The author follows the cognitive approach to verbal semantics which consists first of determining the exact range of contextually induced senses and next of unifying such values into a consistent map based upon certain diachronic universals or grammaticalization paths. Results: The synchronic inventory of senses of the Nominal KAŊ form (i.e. progressive, continuous, progressive-iterative, iterative, habitual and durative values) shows that this construction can be mapped using the imperfective path as a template of chaining. This mapping, hypothesized on the ground of synchronic semantic evidence and typological diachronic laws, is next corroborated by the structural properties of the Nominal KAŊ locution, especially by its locative and nominal character. Conclusion: All the evidence enables the author to semantically define the NomKAŊ form as a nonadvanced imperfective path. Part 1: In the first article of the series, the author deals with methodological issues and with an empirical study where he determines the precise extent of the semantic potential of the Nominal KAŊ form.

O cultivo da mandioca (Manihot esculenta Crantz) tem uma estreita relação com a formação do Brasil, especialmente com a agricultura familiar de pequena escala. Esta espécie ainda é muito importante na subsistência de milhões de pequenos agricultores no país - especialmente nas regiões setentrionais - e desempenha um papel significativo na dieta da população das áreas rurais. Apesar dessa importância histórica, o cultivo da mandioca por pequenos agricultores sofreu grandes transformações nos últimos dois séculos, inclusive um acentuado declínio, observado em algumas regiões de maior crescimento econômico, como aquela que abrange hoje o estado de São Paulo. Este artigo analisa o declínio e quase completo colapso do cultivo de mandioca na agricultura de pequena escala do estado de São Paulo, entre o século XVI e meados do XX, assim como os fatores socioeconômicos, culturais e ambientais que interagiram desde o século XVIII para formar esse cenário.

Os pequenos agricultores do vale do alto rio Juruá, no Acre, produzem farinha de mandioca para consumo e comércio. Este artigo descreve as práticas que produzem e identificam uma farinha 'especial' do ponto de vista dos produtores locais. Esses processos são tanto técnicos como conceituais e se aplicam às raízes de mandioca, aos objetos responsáveis pelo processamento e à farinha produzida, diferindo da avaliação de negociantes e órgãos governamentais. Esse conjunto prescritivo será confrontado com a percepção dos comerciantes e também com a dos serviços públicos, a qual atua no melhoramento dessa produção por considerá-la desvalorizada e com elevada variabilidade.

O texto apresenta breve introdução à vida e à obra de Giovanni Angelo Brunelli (1722-1804), astrônomo bolonhês que participou da primeira Comissão Demarcadora de Limites entre as possessões de Portugal e Espanha na América do Sul, de 1753 a 1761, a serviço da Coroa lusitana. Em seguida, são publicados os três trabalhos de Brunelli sobre a Amazônia brasileira, tendo como temas a pororoca (1767), a mandioca (1767) e o rio Amazonas (1791); e dois outros documentos relacionadas à comissão, um ofício no qual Brunelli reclama a coordenação dos trabalhos de cartografia (1752) e um rascunho do diário de viagem do astrônomo até o rio Negro (1754). Todos esses documentos foram traduzidos ao português, pela primeira vez, do latim e do italiano.

A interação que deu corpo a este texto aconteceu entre o final de outubro e o início de novembro de 2020. Na verdade, o que aqui discutimos registra boa parte das tensões teóricas e políticas promovidas por linguistas aplicadxs e linguistas queer brasileirxs, engajadxs com a desnaturalização dos processos discurisvos que subalternizam sujeitos desviantes da cis-heteronormatividade e da branquitude, como eixos importantes de opressão. Abstract This paper provides a diachronic construction-based explanation of the differential perfective marking conditioned by transitivity status in Western Mande languages, using the Greater Manding group as an exemplar case. This typologically unusual phenomenon has previously been erroneously cast in terms of case alignment, either synchronically (in terms of bidirectional case markers) or historically (in terms of an earlier split-ergative stage). The central insight of my explanation is that the Positive Perfective constructions of the Western Mande languages are multiple-source constructions. The in-depth reconstruction of these constructions presented in the paper provides a theoretically significant illustration of a pattern of repeated emergence of constructional competition in a particular semantic domain, which is subsequently resolved through constructional specialization and merger, resulting in multiple-source constructions and a typologically unusual pattern of differential TAM and polarity marking.

Le fondement de ces doutes était la présence d’un groupe de substantifs en Manding (surtout en Bamana) à consonnes initiales prénasalisées; tous ces substantifs se caractérisent par une sémantique spécifique.Une analyse plus minutieuse des données des langues Manding, et aussi du materiel de langues du sous-groupe Mandé Sud-Ouest, nous permet de proposer la réconstruction de trois marques de classes en Pra-Mandé - *nL’auteur présente une reconstruction du système des consonnes initiales du Pra-Sud- Ouest Mandé, en tenant compte des marques des classes indiquées. The Heroism of women in the African Epic: A critical analysis of Sundiata or the mandingo Epic, Emperor Shaka The Great: A Zulu Epic and Nsongo’a Lianja: The national Epic of the Nkundo. In African epics, female figures perform salient heroic roles that are, unfortunately, not widely recognised and celebrated, as notions of bravery and heroism are understood from a male perspective. Against this backdrop, this study adopts new critical and conceptual approaches to interrogate existing narratives, discourse and ideas on/or about female heroism. By focusing on selected epics, this work incorporates perceptions about women in folktales whose themes comment and reflect on the presentation of female characters and the roles they execute in society. The present contribution critically examines the role of supernatural forces in female characters’ commitment and heroism; not only protecting Soundiata, Shaka, and Lianja in accomplishing their destinies but also showcasing the activities, traditions, belief systems and culture of the Mandingo, Zulu, and Mongo in their respective societies.

AbstractThis paper re-evaluates hypotheses about the agreement behaviour of nouns using plural suffixes in the Baïnounk languages (Niger Congo/ Atlantic/ North Atlantic). Although these languages dispose of a large and complex prefixing noun class systems which are involved in expressing number distinctions, a subgroup of nouns uses a suffix for pluralisation. It is shown here that plural-suffixing nouns do not engage in the typologically rare process of phonological agreement copying as has been claimed previously. Instead, they are prefixed nouns, triggering alliterative agreement. Several scenarios about the origin and further development of the plural suffixes are presented. Synchronic data suggest that plural suffixes are older than the split of Nyun-Buy languages from a common ancestor. It is highly unlikely that it is borrowed from Mandinka, a regionally influential lingua franca which does not have noun classes. Instead, it seems plausible that plural suffixes have arisen through internal processes in which animacy and collective semantics have played a role. Potential candidates for a source morpheme for the plural suffix include a plural morpheme from the verbal domain or alternatively an associative plural. The role and impact of language contact and large scale borrowing on the extent of plural suffixation in the various Baïnounk languages is discussed.
