Abstract:
One of the main themes of Manfredo Tafuri's historical work, whether he was analyzing Renaissance, Enlightenment or the 20th century architecture, has been that of trying to illustrate the distance between architect's work and reality. This topic is also the premise, the introductory theoretical frame for his critical and historical discourses that are inherent to his "critique of realism": a critique that was expressed in the essay Architettura e Realismo [Architecture and Realism], published in 1985. A text that represented the conclusion of Tafuri's observation on the Italian postwar architectural culture. In this essay the Italian neorealism became the object of a rather unique historical contextualization, the object of Tafuri's deep critique and, ultimately, of his demystification.

Abstract:
Santrauka. Keywords: architecture, history, competition, Manfredo Tafuri, Klaipeda. ABSTRACTTHE COMPETITION BETWEEN ARCHITECTURAL AND HISTORICAL VISIONS OF KLAIPEDA: BRAVE DECISIONS VS. SUSTAINABLE PRESERVATIONThe issue of the relation of Klaipeda’s image to urban planning has been the subject of intense debate. Old and new buildings transforming Klaipeda’s image at once correct and adjust the city’s past: its past can for example be reshaped, renewed, preserved or destroyed by architectural means. Thus architecture becomes an object of historical interest. In this article the analytic scheme proposed by the architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri is employed. Importantly, Tafuri dissociates architects from architectural historians: the former is operative, utopian and future-oriented; the latter is critical, memorial and oriented to the past. Between the two extremes Tafuri places the figure of the architectural critic, who is dependent on both architecture (as an object) and history (as knowledge). Such a schema is however incomplete as Tafuri ignores the figure of the expert of heritage protection. In the expert of heritage protection Tafuri’s schema can be refigured around four categories: theory (historian and critic), practice (architect and expert of heritage protection), past (historian and expert of heritage protection) and future (architect and critic). This upgraded framework is applied to the case of Klaipeda city in order to describe recent encounters, controversies and conflicts between two predominant visions – architectural and historical – concerning city planning and the protection of material heritage.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Italian architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri (1935–94) developed a distinctive Marxist approach of critical analysis, which has prompted extensive responses. The reception of his work in the United States in the 1970s and 80s – the intervention of Fredric Jameson, especially – forms an important moment of historiographical mutation, in which the status of Tafuri’s politics holds an intriguing place: it was eviscerated in the very act of its affirmation. At stake is not simply the problems attending the transatlantic migration of a body of architectural theory, but also a question lying at the heart of Tafuri’s analysis: the problems of achieving social reforms, above all, in ‘working-class housing’. The difficulties encountered by projects to improve accommodation – from Weimar Germany and Red Vienna in the 1920s to the programmes of postwar Italy – provide the concrete material for Tafuri’s analysis while remaining a significant blind-spot within most of the commentary. Tafuri is here reappraised in the light of the political debates over the ‘neorealist architecture’ of the 1950s and the reform-policies of the Italian centre-Left in the early 1960s. Proceeding as if this formative moment never happened, Tafuri’s critics often engage in debates which confuse his critique of the building projects with political despair, and which appeal to enclave-building despite Tafuri’s explicit questioning of such strategies.

Abstract:
Certain aspects of Manfredo Tafuri's work have been recently reexamined by the academic community. However, the redraft of his ideas has likely generated both several misunderstandings and misconceptions. His theoretical approach is one of the main keys to interpret his work: the issue of any architectural process is the complexity of the process itself. The theoretical issues of an architectural project relates to Tafuri’s argument regarding the basic constraints that we could find in the philosophical debate about modernity, techniques, languages, freedom and the constraints on subjective action. Tafuri tracks an extraordinarily rich cartography of architecture and a cultural and political pathway that connects a wide critical thinking sphere of the Italian intelligentsia between the 1960s and 1980s

Abstract:
Italian architectural historian and critic, Manfredo Tafuri, with his seminal book Theories and History of Architecture, issued in 1968, started a new era in the architectural discourse. With his eminent theorization of &ldquo
architecture as the critique of ideology,&rdquo
Tafuri had shifted the critique of architecture to a political and Marxist level and this revolutionary understanding had absolute impacts on the institutionalization of the American critical discourse after 1968. This study is a historical criticism of the said intellectual interaction that examines the related theoretical transformations in discourse through specific publications, exhibitions, and symposiums. The 1972 MoMA exhibition, entitled Italy: The New Domestic Landscape (INDL) was a singular &ldquo
case&rdquo
in this examination since the first encounter of American intellectuals with the English translation of Tafuri&rsquo
s text, introducing a historical language, was through its catalog. Assigning the exhibition as a &ldquo
moment of crisis&rdquo
that had critical determining value for the comprehension of the entire sequence, this study attempts to reveal its significance, by analyzing the INDL catalog with a Tafurian methodology. In its entirety, the present study is a historical criticism of a sequence, which, however, does not refer to a linear flow of time. It is the &ldquo
project of crises&rdquo
in that particular sequence, a &ldquo
historical project&rdquo
in Tafurian sense. The project begins with the &ldquo
doubling&rdquo
of the INDL catalog. It recomposes the process into autonomous narratives, and then establishes an analytical relationship between those and Italophile inclinations in related texts, published in the periodical Oppositions between 1974 and 1984.

Abstract:
This thesis project explores the question of the death of architecture; the declaration of the lost abilities of architecture to achieve political influence and the architect as a social actor. As I have found myself in agreement with this Tafurian perspective on the subject, I wanted to use this thesis project to explore the question of architecture and its political potential, as well as breaking from the paralyzing condition of the incentives of architecture's incapabilities. This, in suggesting that architecture can act as a catalyst for doing things differently. The project investigates, on the one hand,  how a building can encourage political action and engagement, and, on the other, how ideological ideas and intentions can concretize spatially, materially and aesthetically, The project is an design exploration concretized in a specific architectural proposal – a building for a political organization operating in the city of Stockholm.

Abstract:
The following thesis addresses Manfredo Tafuri's historical and critical method. It considers a selection of studies conducted by the Italian historian at different moments of his intellectual trajectory, and it explores how his unorthodox approach succeeded in challenging established architectural accounts and in exposing the ideologically constructed figure of the architect. The thesis takes its points of departure from Fredric Jameson's interpretation of Tafuri and Francesco Dal Co's book Modern Architecture as a story of sequential failed attempts to resolve the contradiction between the city and the building (or more abstractly, between totality and individual work). Expanding on Jameson's reading, it illustrates how, in the selection of works considered, Tafuri organises his narrative around pairs of (apparently) antinomic terms such as plan and Plan, image and fragment, rule and licence, reality and utopia. Central to the thesis is also the charting of the theoretical and political encounters that shaped Tafuri's mode of thinking. Chapter One focuses on Tafuri and Italian Workerism. It investigates how the Frankfurt School-inflected critique of planning initiated by the founder of Workerism Raniero Panzieri inspired Tafuri's own reading of urban planning. It also looks at the way Tafuri extended the critique of intellectual labour advanced within the frame of the Italian Marxist journal Contropiano to the domain of architecture. Chapter Two tackles Tafuri's analysis of the use of fragment and fragmentation in the work of the Venetian etcher Giambattista Piranesi and in that of the 20th-century avant-garde. It contends that Tafuri's exploration of the meaning of the fragment in works dating from different historical moments is intended to reveal the effect of capitalist development on the communicative potential of form. Chapter Three takes its lead from the 1977 text 'The Historical "Project"', in which Tafuri establishes a set of guidelines for the historical research which will inform his study of Renaissance architecture in the following years. It examines how the application of this method allows Tafuri to challenge established historical accounts of the Renaissance such as that of Rudolf Wittkower. Finally, Chapter Four returns to Tafuri's earliest interventions in the post-war Italian architectural debate. Whereas the first part considers journal articles on the question of the replanning of Rome, the second focuses on a selection of texts tackling the discussion over the new urban scale and architectural neo-realism.

The essay is an analysis Tafuri's theory on historiography;. it traces his methodological sources: the theories, and their mode of reception, that have directly influenced his thought. The period examined starts with Theories and History of Architecture, first published in 1968 and ends with "The Historical 'Project"', the introductory essay of The Sphere and the Labyrinth, published in 1980 The first chapter outlines the intertwining of the two neo-idealist and Marxist components of Tafuri's thought, combined with the early familiarity with the writings of the Nouvelle Critique. Subsequently, it identifies the points that, in Theories and History, represent Tafuri's original contribution to architectural history: the identification of architecture as ideology and the consequent demystifying role that the historian must play; consequently, the formulation of the specific notions that will serve as the instruments for this task of the historian; the identity of history and criticism; the complete separation of the design process from the 'reading' process (Le. history writing) of a building; the logical consequence of this: the 'futility' of history and theory in design; and, finally, the obsoleteness of the mode of criticism termed "operative criticism". The second chapter tackles the problem posed by the contradictory coexistence, in Tafuri's later writings, of Marxist and neo-avant-garde positions. It analyzes in detail what neo-avant-garde ideas were, what they implied and what theoretical and methodological purposes they served. The analysis centers on the strong impact of Foucault's theories on Tafuri, and his equally strong criticism of them. Most importantly, however, it outlines the profound impact of Walter Benjamin's notion of history, particularly as exposed in "The Theses on the Philosophy of History", on Tafuri. In the last chapter, are drawn some partial conclusions on the epistemological implications of Tafuri's theory.

Abstract: Tafuri says:"no history, only criticism", which means we can not rebuild the really history process, only through continuous criticism to approach historical reality. Concerning the history, mythology and symbol under wrenched ideology, critical architecture history philosophy and criticism are the historical laborious plan of removing mystical mask. In Tafuri''s critical history philosophy and criticism, "architecture" is not only the fragile constructure technician, the experience of sight, form and style, but also include the whole culture, history, the process of social symbolization, convert of mythology, style, characteristic, fashion etc, the most point of architecture criticism is to rebuild and disbuild the continuous plan of imaginable process. However, "architecture criticism" is a process of recognization, also is objective execution of subjective ideology. Most people can understand the work due to bring inborn sense , meanwhile, by experence accumulation, most people can achieve objective criticism using comparative analysis due to the difference between sense background and thoughtful culture cause the pluralistic development of criticism thought. Therefore, architecture criticism of subjective ideology will face emptiness of none definite opinion, I think, only rely upon reflection and considerations of historical philosophy can face emptiness. Although few scholar considered that statement of architecture criticism always can not complete with everthing and without enough satisfactory and limitation. However, I think that architecture criticism can remove human thoughful shackles and achieve communication between social strata. This kind of critical historical opion and dialectic consideration are continuous reformatory modernism. Concerning condition and essence of modern architecture, I think which can not define to any type, every period has modern concept and technician, which are smash and detached ideology and productive process, also are a kind of continuous, laborious, multiply endlessly, random critical modernity. Current development of modern architecture is a revolution which is dependent on modernity. Therefore, architecture criticism is the modern statement under review different space representation and distinguish, communication, criticism and reverse of space culture type. Abstract:
Political space is the locos of a crisis. If, historically speaking, for a moment Art was called by necessity to project it’s political status, now, the political form founds itself a “problematic” feature. Architecture, among other disciplines of practice space, have started its own disciplinary reading of such “artistic” context which is, by it’s own definition, a context in permanent crisis. Some marxist literature in the second half of the twentieth century came to project a sort of radical thought from which arises an attack on architectural practice fundamentally based on a “political imperative”. Such “mentality” then, in comparison with a possible “political crises” today, offers the historical framework of the subject. Our attention is focused in two tendencies of criticism provided by the authors Manfredo Tafuri and Henri Lefebvre. We foresee that there is “new” meanings to understand today, described by a “clash” (analytical one) between those tendencies.
