Abstract:
The principal objective of this study was the development and validation of a multiresidue analytical methodology for the quantification of pesticide residues in mangos. Quantitative analyses were made for 32 pesticides, from the following classes: organophosphorus (9), organochlorine (17) and triazole (6). The results from the method include the first analysis for the organophosphorus pesticide fenthion. The organophosphorus pesticides were analyzed by a gas chromatograph (GC) coupled to a flame photometric detector, while the organochlorine pesticides were analyzed using a gas chromatograph (GC) coupled to an electron capture detector (ECD). The triazoles were analyzed with a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC/MS). For each of the analytes, calibration curves were constructed in triplicate using solutions with six different concentrations, prepared from the analytical standards. Recovery experiments were performed at two levels of fortification, the limit of quantification of the method (LOQ) and 10 times this limit. Seven repetitions (N = 7) were performed at the limit of quantification, and five (N = 5) at the 10 times higher level of fortification. Mangos raised by organic farming methods (free from pesticides) were used for the recovery experiments. The methods developed and validated in this study have the following characteristics: a) linear range: 0.1 – 4.0 µg/mL for trichlorfon and malathion; 0.05 – 2.0 µg/mL for the other organophosphorus pesticides; 0.05 – 1.6 µg/mL for the organochloro pesticides; 0.1 – 1.0 µg/mL for paclobutrazol; 0.25 – 2.5 µg/mL for fenthion and bromuconazole; 0.5 – 5.0 µg/mL for tetraconazole and tebuconazole; and 1.0 – 10.0 µg/mL for prochloraz and difenoconazole, in each case the coefficient of determination was greater than 0.99. b) Specific: thus the level of contamination and/or intereference in analysis from the reagent blank and the control sample amounted to less than 30% of the limit of quantification. c) Exact, Precise and Repeatable, for each of the analytes the recovery was found to be within the acceptable interval of 70 to 120%, and with a coefficient of variation, expressed as a percentage, of less than 15% in relation to the global average of the results obtained at the two levels of fortification. Analyses were made for the same pesticides in 15 samples of mangos bought from supermarkets in Piracicaba, which were raised in the Northeast of Brazil. None of these samples contained residue concentrations above the limit established by law or, in the case of non-authorized pesticides, above the limit of the quantification of the current methodology.

Abstract:
The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel, is an economic tephritid that invaded Senegal in 2004 (Vayssieres et al. 2011). This work determined 1) Impact of B. dorsalis on mango crop production and value, and marketing practices, 2) Effect of neem and kaolin on its behavior and development (laboratory and field), and 3) Effect of treated soil with neem seed cake (NSC) and neem seed powder (NSP) on the larval-pupal survival and development (laboratory and field). Results revealed crop value (price/kg) was associated with infestation levels. P<0.0001, crop value decreased in highly infested orchards. Southern Orchards were heavily infested than northern orchards. Early harvest, orchard sanitation, decreasing the purchase quantity, sorting infested mangoes and lowering prices were strategies used by growers and traders. Laboratory bioassays showed females landed and spent time on fruit identically on control and neem. On kaolin there were fewer landings and less time spent. P<0.0001, mean pupae was higher in control than in treated mangoes. In the field, percent of infested mangoes was higher in neem than in control and kaolin. However, the number of emerged flies was higher in the control than in either the neem or kaolin-treated fruit. Treated soil with NSC and with NSP did not have effect on pupation; all larvae pupated in the lab. However, treated soil decreased significantly the number of emerged flies. In the field, there were no significant differences between untreated and treated soil in number of emerged flies.

Abstract:
The determination of crop coefficient (Kc) with adequate methodology is important to quantify regional water requirement. Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) Kc is still unknown and this information will be essential to provide reliable irrigation parameters, as well as for crop zoning. The objective of this study was to determine jatropha actual crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and Kc from 1st to 4th growing year, and correlate Kc with leaf area index (LAI) and cumulative thermal unit (CTU). The experiment was performed from March 2012 to August 2015 at \"Luiz de Queiroz\" College of Agriculture (ESALQ)/University of São Paulo (USP), at Piracicaba city, SP, Brazil. The experiment was divided into center pivot, drip, and rainfed treatments. Two large weighing lysimeters (12 m2 each lysimeter) per treatment were used to determine jatropha ETc (one plant per lysimeter). Reference evapotranspiration (ET0) was determined by Penman-Monteith method from a weather station data situated close to the treatments. Daily Kc was determined for the two irrigated treatments by the ration between ETc and ET0 (Kc=ETc/ET0). LAI was determined using the LAI-2200 plant canopy analyzer, which was previously calibrated for jatropha canopy type. In all growing years, LAI was almost zero at the beginning of vegetative stage, increasing until a maximum during productive stage, and decreasing to zero in the leaf senescence stage. Annual ETc trend during the three growing was very similar, which was explained by the different growing periods and the LAI variation. In the 1st year Kc was 0.47 for both treatments. In the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years Kc ranged from 0.15 to 1.38 for center pivot treatment and from 0.15 to 1.25 for drip treatment. Kc average in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years during vegetative and productive growing periods was 0.77, 0.93, and 0.82 for center pivot treatment, respectively, and 0.69, 0.79, and 0.74 for drip treatment, respectively. The relationship between Kc and LAI for the center pivot treatment was adjusted to a logarithmical equation with coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.7643 and 0.334, respectively. For the drip treatment R2 was 0.8443 and 0.2079, respectively. In all three years analyzed, Kc related to CTU by a 3rd degree polynomial equation for both treatments.

The increased interest in biofuels in recent years, coupled with the problem of the need for environmental sanitation in different areas of the economy justify the proposal of this work, which is the reuse of wastewater from swine (SW) in the jatropha crop (Jatropha curcas L.) and its influence on oil acidity - short parameter importance in the production of biodiesel; culture stands out from oilseeds for its oil production capacity and high adaptability in different scenarios. The experiment featured a Jatropha plantation area of 900 m², which were used 216 m² for conducting the experiment, divided into eighteen installments, the research was conducted over three years; each year the plots received six treatments with different proportions of SW with three repetitions each, applications were performed in triplicate with an interval of three months between each application. Seed harvest was done by hand during the entire production plan period from the first application of each year, the oil was extracted with solvent (ethanol), justified because it is cheaper, less toxic and less harmful to the environment, when compared to other organic solvents such as hexane. The acidity was determined by titration process with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at the end of each experimental cycle; further the composition was determined as the percentage of oils of fatty acids (FA) by gas chromatography. The results showed an inversely proportional reduction of acidity amount of SW applied during the three years analyzed; It was also observed a decrease in linolenic acid concentration due to the increase of the applied dose and in all cycles. Knowing FA unsaturated oils leave them more susceptible to oxidation, reduction FA that may be related to decreased acidity

Abstract:

This thesis has taken part as an experimental development within the Learning Ecology through Science with Global Outcomes project. It introduces the area of cross platform mobile application development and provides a possible solution for tackling the current fragmentation of mobile devices and platforms for data collection. During the process, a mobile data collection prototype was designed, implemented and deployed on Android, iOS and Windows Mango by using standards and web standards such as HTML5, CSS3, XForms and JavaScript. The deployed prototype was then tested with users in order to collect the necessary data to help answer the questions that were formulated. The results indicate an ease of use of the prototype in relation to cross platform development and also shows potential benefits such as less code and time. Cross platform development provides a way to counteract the current fragmentation between mobile platforms.

Abstract:
The knowledge of the water demand of a culture is essential for planning of new areas, as well as for the economic viability analysis of a culture in a specific region. The use of crops for alternative feedstock sources has been extensively studied in the last years. Among many, jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) has been highlighted for biodiesel production in the national and global scenarios. Water consumption by the jatropha is little known, which requires to be studied in order to increase the knowledge and provide reliable parameters for the irrigation practice. The objectives of this study were to determine the evapotranspiration (ET), evaporation (E), transpiration (T), crop coefficient (Kc), evaporation coefficient (Ke) and basal crop coefficient (Kcb) of jatropha in the formation phase irrigated by center pivot, drip and without irrigation in Piracicaba, SP. The experiment was conducted at Areão Farm of Escola Superior de Agricultura \"Luiz de Queiroz\" of USP during March 2012 to April 2013. The experiment included three treatments: center pivot irrigated, drip irrigated and dryland. The determination of ET was made by weighing lysimeters for each treatment, accounting the inputs and outputs of water in the lysimeter system. The determination of Kc was made by the ratio between ET and ETo (estimated from data collected at the automatic meteorological station of Areão Farm). The determination of E was made by microlysimeters and T was determined between the difference of ET and E. Ke and Kcb values were determined by the ratio of E and T by ETo, respectively. ET values varied, mainly, according to the irrigation method. It was observed superiority of ET values for the treatment irrigated by center pivot, followed by the treatment irrigated by drip and without irrigation. The average during the first year was 3.17, 2.82 and 2.82 mm day-1 for the treatment irrigated by center pivot, irrigated by drip irrigated and without irrigation, respectively. The same proportion of ET from irrigated treatments was observed in the values of Kc. In the period, the average of Kc was 0.69 and 0.63 for the treatments irrigated by center pivot and irrigated by drip. These higher rates of ET and Kc of the treatment irrigated by center pivot compared to the treatment irrigated by drip was due to the method of drip irrigation is more efficient in water use by plants in relation to the method irrigated by central pivot. In this method, the water application is made in a localized way, differently in relation to the center pivot method in which water is applied all over the soil surface. This makes E rates given by drip irrigation method lower than the center pivot irrigation method, decreasing its ET averages. In general, rates of E and Ke were higher compared T and Kcb values during the period analyzed. This was explained due the short plants stature and the soil was almost completely exposed to atmospheric variations, causing rates of E and Ke exceed from T and Kcb rates. The average of Ke and E were 1.85 mm day-1 and 1.03, respectively, and the average of T and Kcb were 0.4 mm day-1 and 0.2, respectively.

Abstract:
Recently, there is an increasing interest in using physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) as a source of oil for biodiesel production. However, currently knowledge regarding its crop water requirement is scarce and constitutes one of the main gaps that limit its use as an agroenergy alternative. In addition, there is a general agreement that an increase in biodiesel production worldwide will bring additional pressure to water resources, what provokes to use water in agriculture in a more efficient way. So, this study had as objective to construct six direct weighing lysimeter that will be used to study the water use of physic nut conducted under sprinkler and drip irrigation, and without irrigation. These lysimeters were calibrated and tested for its sensibility to air temperature and wind. Furthermore, there was also compared the influence of using two different load cells on their quality. Two lysimeters were installed for each treatment, one using ALFA® load cells and other using HBM®. Each lysimeter was constituted by a steel tank with 1.955 m inner radius (12 m2) and 1.3 m of usable depth. They were encompassed by concrete walls, have a drainage system and were directly supported by three load cells. Both load cell models has a nominal capacity of 10,000 kg, with a lysimeter summed capacity of 30,000 kg. Lysimeters calibration procedure was done by adding and, after it, removing 1,000 kg of mass from then. Data were used to fit a linear regression model between the accumulated mass and the mean output value of the three load cells. For testing the sensibility to temperature, lysimeters mass were monitored till two consecutive days, under constant mass and with a barrier for protecting against wind interference. Data were compared to the temperature measured by the weather station and, also, by that measured by a datalogger and a thermohygrometer, which were installed inside the lysimeters pit. For testing to wind sensibility, there were constructed some trees prototypes using PVC pipes and raffia tarpaulin. One tree was installed on each lysimeter and, under constant mass, lysimeters mass were monitored during six consecutive days. Data were compared to the wind velocity, as measured by the weather station. All the six lysimeters constructed in this study presented adequate quality to be used for the determination of evapotranspiration on hourly and daily basis. For ALFA® lysimeters, the final measurement resolution was 0.0013 mm, being obtained with good precision, hysteresis, and low accuracy (standard error of 0.27 to 1.04 mm). HBM® lysimeters presented a final resolution of 0.00088 mm, good precision, few or no hysteresis, and high accuracy (standard error between 0.03 and 0.1 mm). All lysimeters proved to be not influenced by air temperature and wind on the determination of evapotranspiration, in spite of, in both, ALFA® and HBM® lysimeters, their measurement precision was linearly reduced with an increase in wind velocity.

OBJECTIVES To define and explain the phenomena of Cross-Media Narrative on a global scale, particularly those related to the Japanese entertainment industry and its main products: manga, anime and videogames. The relationship between these products and their diffusion through media in the form of media-mixes will be studied by means of different theoretical tools and their application to specific cases in the Japanese cultural industry. METHODOLOGY • Historical review of main studies about Transmedia Storytelling, Manga, Anime and Japanese Culture from different perspectives (Literature and genre Theories, political sociology, Art and Film Studies, etc.). • Case of study as an implementation of a theoretical framework MAIN RESULTS For the analysis of the macro-tale of Full Metal Alchemist Franchise (Square Enix, 2001-2011) a methodology has been developed founded on some central areas of analysis. • In the first of these the Cross-Media Narrative of the franchise has been characterized as a reticular centered architecture that follows the traditions of other franchises of Japanese manganime. In this way other characteristics of intertextuality of the macro-tale are analyzed, based on their relationship with shōnen and SF genres. • Next, the concept of “Deep Structures” has been used to define the elements as indispensable in the construction of “storyworlds”. In this sense, an unstructured vision has been adopted –eclectic if preferable– of the narrative. The narrative is not, therefore, a monolithic quality but a prototype for whose approximation we define different acts as possessor or no, of a certain “degree of narrativity”. • Once these qualities that we consider essential of narrative are defined, following the different theoretical frameworks and adapted to the context of the Japanese cross-media franchise, we have incorporated in our analysis other narrative tools with the purpose of relating the narrative product with a higher communication structure

Jatropha curcas L. is a plant native to America and belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. Currently it is gaining economical interest mainly because it is an oilseed crop with potential to produce biodiesel. However, presence of phorbol esters (a class of diterpenes) that are the major toxic constituents of the seeds, limits a better usage of the plant, by making the use of the residue, obtained after the oil extraction from the seeds, unfeasible for animal feed, due to its pro-carcinogenic activity and inflammatory action. Proteomic analysis of the plastids isolated from developing seeds of Jatropha is important because the synthesis of fatty acid as well as phorbol esters, the two most attractive compounds in the study of Jatropha curcas, occur in plastids. Proteomic analysis of this organelle is crucial to better understand and explore not only the biosynthetic pathway of these two compounds but other metabolic pathways , and addtionaly providing foundation for researchs that aimed to develope genotypes with more suitable characteristics for industrial applications. In this study, we performed a proteomic analysis of plastids isolated from the endosperm of developing Jatropha curcas seeds that were in the initial stage of deposition of protein and lipid reserves. Proteins extracted from the plastids were digested with trypsin, and the peptides were applied to an EASY-nano LC system coupled online to an ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap Velos mass spectrometer, and this led to the identification of 1103 proteins representing 804 protein groups, of which 923 were considered as true identifications, and this considerably expands the repertoire of J. curcas proteins identified so far. Of the identified proteins, only five are encoded in the plastid genome, and none of them are involved in photosynthesis, evidentiating the nonphotosynthetic nature of the isolated plastids. Homologues for 824 out of 923 identified proteins were present in three different plastids proteins databases i.e. PPDB, SUBA and PlProt, while homologues for 13 proteins were not found in any of these three databases but were marked as plastidial by at least one of the three prediction programs used (TargetP, ChloroP and PlantMPloc). Functional classification showed that proteins belonging to amino acids metabolism comprise the main functional class, followed by carbohydrate, energy, and lipid metabolisms. The small and large subunits of Rubisco were identified, and their presence in plastids is considered to be an adaptive feature counterbalancing for the loss of one-third of the carbon as CO2 as a result of the conversion of carbohydrate to oil through glycolysis. While several enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of several precursors of diterpenoids were identified, we were unable to identify any terpene synthase/cyclase, which suggests that the plastids isolated from the endosperm of developing seeds do not synthesize phorbol esters. In conclusion, this study provides insights into the major biosynthetic pathways and certain unique features of the plastids from the endosperm of developing seeds at the whole proteome level.

Abstract:
This study was conducted in the community of Yampupata, in the municipality of Copacabana, in the Manco Kapac province, La Paz, to an altitude of 3841 m.a.s.l, agricultural campaign 2003-2004. The purpose of the study was to determine and compare the fenological stages (germination, growth, leafing, and harvesting), hypocotyl yield (dry and fresh), classification of the hypocotyl (diameter, length, etc.), and the economical evaluation as well. The experiment set up was installed in the lower region of the community, dedicated to agriculture, performing all the aforementioned activities together for the period of a year. The experimental design was of Random blocking test, having three types of Maca (lepidium mevenni Walp.): yellow, purple, and cream , five levels of ovine manure ( 0.0, 2.5, 7.5, and 10.0 tn/ha), distributed in the four blocks, 15 treatments, 60 experimental units, with a planting density of 3 kg/ha, and a total area of 300 m². According to the results, it is recommended to plant the cream, and the yellow ecotype of Maca, due to their positive development under the conditions of the soil, and climate of the zone. The cream ecotype under the effect of 7.5 tn/ha of ovine manure (a3b3) had a yield of 8055.06 kg/ha in 238 days (8 months) , with a rentability index of 3.75. In comparison, the purple ecotype with a 0.0 tn/ha of ovine manure (a2b1) had a yield of 4319.55 kg/ha, and a rentability index of 1.74 in eight months. The cream ecotype with 7.5 tn/ha of ovine manure, presented the best behavior under local conditions (climate, soil, and handling), the yield and rentability index were superior to the other treatments; therefore, it is recommended to implement a production plan in the sector according to the results obtained from the study.

Abstract:
With the growing demand for alternative energy to meet the world, increasingly more clean and renewable sources are being used. In Brazil, the production of vegetable oils aimed at producing energy (biodiesel) is still incipient. Among the different species of oleaginous plants, jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) has emerged as a great alternative in providing raw material for biodiesel production. Information on this crop are still scarce, especially in Brazil where they recently started research. The need for local information also emphasizes the importance of research with Jatropha. Based on these needs, the aim of this experiment was to analyze the technical viability production of jatropha seedlings irrigated by subirrigation system and develop an automated system management. The irrigation control was carried out from the weight variation of the vials with the seedlings because of water loss through evapotranspiration. In the process of weight control were used load cells, which monitored the weight variation of a set of vials called the control group. The experimental design was the completely randomized with four replications. The treatments were four levels of depletion of the maximum water holding capacity (MCRA) presented by the substrate (T1=20%, T2=40%, T3=60% e T4=80% da MCRA). To quantify the effects of the treatments were evaluated weekly the following characteristics of seedlings: height and diameter of the stem, leaf number and leaf area, and the production of fresh and dry shoot and root. The results show that treatment 2 was what stood out among the others, producing higher quality seedlings with greater dry matter accumulation and increased water consumption.

Abstract:
Individuals interacting in an environment that exacerbates fear of crime and general distrust may face erosion of democratic values and perceive authoritarian policies as a solution to restore order. In Latin America historical widespread distrust in the government apparatus as well as fear of crime, have always been a topic of interest, not only for sociologists but also for political scientists and lawmakers. This study uses the LAPOP wave 2012 (Latin American Public Opinion) survey to assess Ecuadorians’ perceptions about trust in the government and fear of crime as predictors of support for authoritarian policies (mano dura). Logistic regressions show evidence that fear of crime acts as a better predictor than level of trust in the government for predicting the likelihood of supporting authoritarian policies. Overall, this study provides a hint of how Ecuadorians support for democratic principles may have weakened by fear of crime and lack of trust in the government apparatus.

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the feasibility of using the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) for pollination and yield increment in Jatropha curcas L. crops. Therefore, the floral biology and pollination process of J. curcas were studied as well as the foraging behavior and pollination efficiency of A. mellifera in this crop by the introduction of four colonies in a hectare. The work was carried out in a five years-old commercial plantation comprising 10ha, in the state of PiauÃ, (08Â32â19,0âS and 43Â56â19,7âW, 220 meters above sea level), Brazil, from March to July, 2009. Flowers were presented in protogynous inflorescences and the anthesis and most of pollen presentation took place mainly in the morning shift. Inflorescences last, in average, 20 days, with female flowers concentrating in the first third of the period and male flowers predominating in the second third, in a relation of 18.1:1 male/ female flower. Although this may favor xenogamy, the stigma receptivity lasts for, at least, five days ensuring the flower to reach the period of most pollen release in its own inflorescence, facilitating the occurrence of geitonogamy. Flowers pollinated up to four days after anthesis did not differ (p>0.05) in fruit setting to those pollinated in the first, second or third day after anthesis. Foraging by A. mellifera occurs throughout the day and peaks between 13h00min and 15h00min and is characteristic of nectar harvesting both in male and female flowers. Only one visit by A. mellifera to J. curcas flowers set 100% producing results similar (p>0,05) to those from manual xenogamy (96%), manual geitonogamy (94%) and open pollination (93%). However, only one visit by a bee was not enough to maximize the oil content per seed (213mg) in comparison to the open pollination and geitonogamy treatments (both 250mg). Besides that, it was possible to observe that geitonogamy led to greater oil production than xenogamy (237mg). It is concluded that A. mellifera is an efficient pollinator of this crop. The introduction of four honey bee colonies per hectare maximize oil production and produce the best results for all parameters studied. Furthermore, only one visit by the honey bee to J. curcas flowers was enough to prevent pollination deficit in this crop.

Abstract:
Spiders are naturally occurring predators of insects in agroecosystems. The use of broad spectrum pesticides in agriculture is likely to disrupted spider communities and have a negative impact on their role as biocontrollers. The overall abundance, the species richness, diversity and guild structure of spiders in tropical mango orchards in central Queensland were investigated in this study. Experiments were performed to assess the potential of spiders as natural predators to pest insects in mango orchards. The effects of pesticides on the spider communities were assessed to establish the extent to which the communities were disrupted and the extent of recovery from this type of disturbance. The short term (acute) and long term (chronic) effects were investigated. The spiders in unsprayed mango orchards were relatively high in abundance, species richness and species diversity. Spiders were present in significant numbers at all sampling times, both day and at night, and during all seasons. The results suggest that spiders do not capture large numbers of prey. However spider exhibit a diversity of capturing techniques so that they capture a variety of insects. The most common guild was the orb-weavers. The spider abundance and diversity four days after spraying with methidathion suggested that recovery of spider after disruption such as the use of pesticides' occurs quickly. Presumably this recovery occurs due to spiders moving into the orchard from surrounding bush land. The long term use of pesticide does appear to disrupt the community and as evidenced by decreases in the abundance, species richness and diversity of spiders. While it is unlikely that pesticide usage will be eliminated in most commercial mango orchards, this study demonstrates that spiders are potentially important biocontrollers and that they are adversely affected by pesticide use. In the longer term, it will be desirable to develop IPM strategies to minimise pesticide use and maximise the role of spiders as biocontrollers. Such strategies will depend on studies such as this one and extensions of it.

Abstract:
Precision management of the mango crop can be aided by quantitative measures of indices relevant to fruit maturation and measurement of the fruit load per tree. Such measures address fruit quantity and quality, respectively. Mango fruit DM at harvest is an index of ripened fruit eating quality of ripened fruit, and DM is also useful in assessment of the stage of maturation of the fruit. This thesis considered the robustness of NIR spectroscopy based DM models for use with fruit from different harvest events and of five cultivars (Calypso™, Honey Gold, Keitt, Kensington Pride and R2E2), from two distinct growing regions (Northern Territory and Queensland, over two seasons). Individual cultivar calibrations achieved cross validation statistics of Rcv2 = 0.85-0.93; RMSECV = 0.61-0.96% DM, while a combined cultivar (global) model had satisfactory statistics of Rcv2 = 0.84; RMSECV = 0.99% DM.

Abstract:
The management of any supply chain rests on knowledge of stock inventory. For crops, this need involves forecast of harvest timing and volume. This thesis focusses on the use of machine vision to improve forecast of harvest volume and Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in context of harvest timing for the Australian mango industry, with attention to issues involved in scaling up machine vision detection of fruit in images to estimation of fruit load of orchards and the issue of calibration robustness for NIRS models. A machine vision system was utilized to estimate fruit load up to six weeks before harvest on fifty four orchards over two seasons. High repeatability was achieved in night-time imaging using a multi-view machine vision method. Yield estimations were made of multiple orchards via: (i) human count of fruit load on ~5% of trees (FARM), (ii) human count of 18 trees randomly selected within three NDVI stratifications (CAL), (iii) multi-view counts (MV-Raw) and (iv) multi-view corrected for occluded fruit using manual counts of CAL trees (MV-CAL). Across the nine orchards for which results for all methods were available, the FARM, CAL, MV-Raw and MV-CAL methods achieved an average percentage error on packhouse counts of 26, 13, 11 and 17 %, with SD of 4, 11, 8 and 11 %, respectively, in the 2019-20 season. Greater error in load estimation occurred in the 2020-21 season due to the time-spread of flowering. However, canopy architecture impacted performance, with reasonable estimates achieved on hedge, single leader, and conventional systems (3.4, 5.0, and 8.2 average percentage error, respectively) while fruit load of trellised orchards was over-estimated. The potential for agronomic interventions to shift fruit load from top of canopy to side of canopy was therefore explored, with the aim of improving fruit visibility from the inter-row and improving harvest efficiency. Upper canopy panicles were removed by pruning in two seasons. In both seasons the proportion of fruit detected by machine vision was significantly increased by the pruning treatment compared to the control (1.51 c.f. 1.19 and 1.56 c.f. 0.88; for 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons respectively). Fruit were also shifted to the outer canopy as assessed in terms of camera to fruit distances measured using a Time of Flight camera in the 2020/21 season (2238 c.f. 2411 µ distance fruit to camera [mm] for treatment and control row respectively). In another approach, upper canopy vegetative growth was removed at intervals before the floral induction period, preventing formation of upper canopy floral panicles but without decrease in fruit load per tree (control = 61.5; treatments = 59.5 - 74.2 fruit/tree). Short wave near infrared spectroscopy based on Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) models has found use in non-invasive assessment of Dry Matter Content (DMC, % fresh weight) of mango fruit. A data set of 4,675 samples acquired across multiple seasons, cultivars and growing regions was assembled for use in training, with harvest populations used as cross-validation groups and data of the fourth season reserved as an independent test set. The fruit physiological stage had the greatest impact on PLSR model performance, compared to cultivar, year or growing region, as estimated using a ‘variable importance metric’. The use of a global ANN model (0.89 %) gave prediction results comparable to specific (cultivar or physiological stage) PLSR models (RMSEP on DMC decreased from 1.01 to 0.88 %). A companion study compared ANN, Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), Local Optimized by Variance Regression (LOVR), Local Partial Least use Squares Regression (LPLS), Local PLS Scores (LPLS-S) and Memory Based Learner (MBL) and two commercially available cloud-based chemometric packages. All of these models gave a better result than a global PLSR model. The best result (lowest RMSEP) was achieved with an ensemble of ANN, GPR and LPLS-S, with the best individual model result achieved by LOVR, with RMSEP of 0.839 % and 0.881 %, respectively, compared to the global PLSR result of 1.014 %. The data set was made public and has been used in multiple publications by other authors, with introduction of deep learning (convolution neural network) models, although direct comparison to the models of this thesis was not possible due to differences in outlier removal. The ANN model was recommended as satisfactory in all categories (model size, prediction speed, model build speed, and prediction statistics) and insensitive to tuning. This ANN model was adopted across handheld spectrometers used in the Australian mango industry in the 2020/21 season.

Abstract:
A machine vision based system is proposed to replace the current in-orchard manual estimates of mango fruit yield, to inform harvest resourcing and marketing. The state-of-the-art in fruit detection was reviewed, highlighting the recent move from traditional image segmentation methods to convolution neural network (CNN) based deep learning methods. An experimental comparison of several deep learning based object detection frameworks (single shot detectors versus two-staged detectors) and several standard CNN architectures was undertaken for detection of mango panicles and fruit in tree images. The machine vision system used images of individual trees captured during night time from a moving platform mounted with a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver and a LED panel floodlight. YOLO, a single shot object detection framework, was re-designed and named as MangoYOLO. MangoYOLO outperformed existing state-of-the-art deep learning object detection frameworks in terms of fruit detection time and accuracy and was robust in use across different cultivars and cameras. MangoYOLO achieved F1 score of 0.968 and average precision of 0.983 and required just 70 ms per image (2048 × 2048 pixel) and 4417 MB memory. The annotated image dataset was made publicly available. Approaches were trialled to relate the fruit counts from tree images to the actual harvest count at an individual tree level. Machine vision based estimates of fruit load ranged between -11% to +14% of packhouse fruit counts. However, estimation of fruit yield (t/ha) requires estimation of fruit size as well as fruit number. A fruit sizing app for smart phones was developed as an affordable in-field solution. The solution was based on segmentation of the fruit in image using colour features and estimation of the camera to fruit perimeter distance based on use of fruit allometrics. For mango fruit, RMSEs of 5.3 and 3.7 mm were achieved on length and width measurements under controlled lighting, and RMSEs of 5.5 and 4.6 mm were obtained in-field under ambient lighting. Further, estimation of harvest timing can be informed by assessment of the spread of flowering. Deep learning object detection methods were deployed for assessment of the number and development stage of mango panicles, on tree. Methods to deal with different orientations of flower panicles in tree images were implemented. An R2 >0.8 was achieved between machine vision count of panicles on images and in-field human count per tree. Similarly, mean average precision of 69.1% was achieved for classification of panicle stages. These machine vision systems form a foundation for estimation of crop load and harvest timing, and for automated harvesting.

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation into the cross-cultural appropriation of manga and anime by fans in Australia. I investigate the way in which fans embark on ‘identity’ projects through manga and anime to construct a space where issues of gender politics, identity and culture are explored. I argue that a key reason why many Western fans and scholars perceive manga and anime as ‘different’ is its ‘Japaneseness’. The two key problems addressed throughout the thesis are : how can we analyse the significance of the Japanese origins and context of manga and anime, and would the ‘identity projects’ that fans construct be possible without an appreciation of manga and anime’s 'Japaneseness?.' These questions are explored in terms of a number of key forms within manga and anime including cyberpunk, bishonen(beautiful boys), otaku(fans) and anime forms that have had their ‘Japaneseness’ softened. I discuss the way in which these manga and anime forms offer different spaces for fans, scholars and cultural industries to contest, rework and reiterate the cultural value of manga and anime.

Nowadays, in addition to manga-based anime, the live-action version is becoming a trend. Manga, being remediated to different media modality, provides rich choices for the audience. This study aims to explore cross-media participation behavior and interpretation, and the effect of entry point by focusing on “manga audiences.” Taking into account the media modality and the entry point, the motivations of manga audiences consuming manga or adaptations are re-experiencing what they have known and exploring more details of the story world. The findings also indicate that the perception of intermediality/intertextuality affects audiences’ interpretation of manga and adaptations, and their pleasures. Moreover, through the implementation of the actual viewing behavior, this study finds out that the first viewing medium (the entry point) will become the reference point for other texts. The finding also subverts the idea of manga as the main, adaptation as the supplement.

This thesis examines the image of Victorian female maids and seamstresses represented in Japanese neo-Victorian manga and fiction, with special references to shokunin (しょくにん; 職人; professional craftsmen) in Japanese culture and neo-Victorianism. The core texts studied are Kaoru Mori (森薰)’s Emma (2006) and Yuko Aoki (青木佑子)’s Victorian Rose Tailor (2010). The characters of neo-Victorian needlewomen and housemaids, I argue, deserve scholarly attention and can be treated in ways that differ from those kawaii maids in mainstream Japanese ACGN (Anime, Comics, Games, Novels) or simply beautiful passive housewives and “interactive personal robots” from the perspective of certain Western post-feminists. Instead, I see them as hybridized cultural icons that retain the conventional characteristics of Victorian working women, while simultaneously containing the essence of the Japanese “shokunin spirit.” Contesting previous scholars’ readings, the thesis demonstrates that the hybridized representations of Victorian female workers in Emma and Victorian Rose Tailor exemplify the ways in which Japanese neo-Victorian works ingeniously embed the Japanese shokunin spirit into the Western settings of Victorian England and further reflect the shared mentality of class fluidity in different contexts. In addition, the seemingly “Cinderella-esque” romance that these neo-Victorian shokunin encounter also revisits the cross-class Victorian romance between lower working-class females and middle or upper-class employers, and disrupts the dichotomies between “Angel in the House” and “New Woman” in nineteenth-century England.
