Abstract:
Line Webtoon is one of the media used by South Korea in spreading Hallyu Wave. It has driven the views or opinions of the South Korean culture through manhwa (Korean Comic) called "Noblesse" in the application Line Webtoon using Comic Theory from Scott McCloud. The analysis of case studies on the Noblesse manhwa showed that opinions were presented and exhanged related to the characters, the messages being conveyed, and reader's expectations about in the manhwa. The readers' enthusiasm for this manhwa has made Noblesse one of the most favored manhwas. The implications of this research led to the intercultural communication associated with the comic elements in this manhwa.

Abstract:
When translating Korean literature, we often come across words and phrases that might not have a direct equivalent in the target language. One of the most difficult genres to translate is, in our opinion, the comic, or the manhwa. We try to offer illustrative examples of translation from the source language, which is Korean, into the target language, which is English, with emphasis on translating words and phrases that might pose problems, such as culture-bound words, names of places, and characters. We will also discuss other linguistic phenomena that are common to graphic novels, such as mots expresifs, onomatopoeia, charactonyms, also tackling issues regarding historical references, cultural references, behavior, and customs pertaining to the source, but also a target, social groups. The reason why we are focusing on translating manhwa2 is the fact that it has started to become more and more popular in other cultures/countries. We chose the manhwa called 신과 함께 (Along with the Gods), as it is one of the most popular of its kind, and it is one that intertwines Korean folklore, tradition, history, and mythical creatures with contemporaneity.

Abstract:
In comparison to Korea’s other cultural industries, manhwa 만화 has shown a lagged development. As a result, the Korean government has recently shown interest in this industry and begun to support it. However, the fundamental reasons for the lagged development of manhwa should be carefully scrutinized in order to make promotion policies and support more effective and thus to achieve further development and advancement of the manhwa industry. This article seeks to address this issue and argues that the core problem is derived from a negative view toward manhwa as it has been considered to be harmful to Korean society and, hence, not acknowledged as a part of culture. Therefore, this paper takes a historical approach to track down how this negative view formed and why it has prevailed in Korea. To this end, political and economic changes related to the manhwa industry are analyzed with a focus on production and consumption. The paper reveals that it was not only coercive public policies but also a lack of production capacity that induced a distorted view toward manhwa and caused the development of the industry to lag. Where business strategies have been adopted in an improved business environment, this has helped to enhance production to achieve better outcomes and change the view of consumers toward manhwa, resulting in an increase in consumption.

Abstract:
Manhwa as an authentic material is explored here as a source of extralinguistic information helping to form the background knowledge of Russian-speaking students while teaching the Korean language. At the same time, manhwa is a poly-code source consisting of text and visual components. Study of the relevant sources showed that due to their special structural organization and functionality, manhwa have a number of advantages for the effective assimilation of non-linguistic information by students. It is argued that students faster penetrate the extralinguistic information through the manhwa that promotes awareness of a specific situation of communication and understanding. It is shown that extralinguistic information is contained in a verbal component, such as the author's words in the frame, describing, for example, the place of communication or the mood of the characters. Also it may be contained in the characters' lines in the phylacter, when situationally and communicatively conditioned speech is clearly transmitted. It is stated that the association of the verbal component with specific communication conditions, that form the parameters of the communicative situation in Korean, is carried out at the expense of the visual component. At the same time, the image shows a manhwa character speaking Korean as a participant of communication, outwardly corresponding to his situational role, while emotional form of communication is transmitted through the body language. Characters are depicted in a certain body position, with a drawn facial expression indicating a certain emotional state, which is traditionally an important point in understanding what is happening in the Korean context. The author concludes that other paralinguistic means also convey emotionality in manhwa, namely: 1) caption, 2) phylacter form, 3) color and graphic phylacter filling, 4) sound effects, 5) background effects, 6) tone effects, 7) screen tone.

Abstract:
We believed that knowledge organisation of manga and manhwa with homosexual (including lesbian) themes might be a challenge for Swedish public libraries. One of the reasons for this is that these themes in manga and manhwa usually occur in genres not directed towards an LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) audience. To see how Swedish public libraries treat such titles and why they treat them as they do, we examined a selection of public libraries, their collections, acquisitions, cataloguing and shelving of relevant titles. The theory used is mainly Grant Campbell’s binarisms, subject access to LGBTQ literature and critical analysis of knowledge organisation. Three methods were utilised: online directory searches, a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with librarians. We found a number of relevant titles. Among the selection criterions used, librarians mentioned acquisition requests and title reviews. Several libraries did not perform original cataloguing or did not use subject headings indicating homosexual themes. Some of the subject headings used to indicate such themes were manga terms, others were terms directed towards users seeking literature with homosexual themes. Shelving practises varied slightly, depending, among other things, on what librarians perceived to be the target audience. Some libraries displayed titles with homosexual themes during occasions such as pride festivals. Overall, the libraries we examined claimed not to give any special treatment to titles with homosexual themes. How much work the librarians put into facilitating searches for these titles varied by their personal interest and time available.

Abstract:
Social advertising is a widely accepted means evoking the sense of responsibility in people and helping to deal realistically with the problems of social risk groups of people (narcotic and alcohol addiction, violence, etc.). Social advertising not only spotlights these problems and suggests ways of solving them, but also promotes help and tolerance for the members of the above mentioned social risk groups. The object of the social advertising on the preventive subject ‘Mania’ is polygraphic press: posters, booklets, pocket calendars and table calendars. Six urgent social problems are dealt with in this work: indifference, narcotic addiction, tobacco addiction, violence, compulsion and alcohol addiction because people unconsciously reject the denial. The moral should be made indirectly, allowing the consumer himself/herself to comprehend the negativity of the problem. Therefore, I use the associatives in my works allowing individuals to conceive the process of creation as the essential peculiarity of the individual’s life and social environment in respect to idealistic culture and society. Associatives give space for interpretations in connecting one’s knowledge with new information. The main hypotheses in the work are the following ones: preventive advertising is expected to have an effective informative influence using associative symbols in respect to action and place; the outlined stylistics of the prospect makes contrast with a sharp preventive subject. ...

Abstract:
The appearance of AIDS in the first half of the 1980s brings back to surface the discussion of the illness and guilt binarism. According to the imaginary of that age, the stain stamped on the seropositive body loses its pathological caracter as a virulent action caused by the HIV, replaced by another stain, covering not only the skin of the infected but, principally, the accusing eyes of those who see reality stained by prejudice. In order to treat this imaginary glaucoma, I will analyze the metaphor of the stain in the three plays that make part of my research: Angels in America (1990) by Tony Kushner, The man and the skin lesion (1997) by Caio Fernando Abreu and The Purple stain (1988) by Plinio Marcos. It aims at showing how the stain becomes an appropriate object/sign used by the three playwrights in the representation of the seropositive; and to reflect on stage the blurring of reality, through its imprecise meaning without a delimited frontier. In The Man and the skin lesion, for example, one of the characters, in order to free himself from the vision of a stain stamped on his body, develops a sort of esquizofrenic behavior: he creates a sorrounded fictitious world, provoking his isolation from reality, so that he can inhabit on his solitude island. In Angels in America, Prior Walters skin lesion body causes much more fear to his partner Louis than to the protagonist himself. While Louis tries to escape from the emblematic imagery of guilt, Prior transforms himself not into someone marked to die, but as a chosen one, a new elect, who challenges the Angel asking for more life. And finally The Purple stain presents the metaphor of the stain in a more realistic and fatalistic way: female prisoners are not only physically imprisoned, but mentally, without the possibilities of imaginary escapisms

This research was carried out from 2008 to 2010, in the master s degree course in Education of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas. The aim of this paper is to study the actions of a History teacher while experiencing with his students as a proposal for teaching History the Virtual/Fiction Experience (EFV) through the game Age of Empires II. It is tried to make evident how this teacher subject of this research plans, develops, and reflects about the practice of teaching Medieval History through the game mentioned. It is considered that there is, in electronic games (as in the game mentioned), the evidence of the possibility of performance in a historical time and space simulated through informatics which is called here as Virtual/Fiction Experience. The concepts in which this study is based are the following: Dispositive (Agambem, 2009); Game (Huizinga, 2000 and Caillois, 1990); Experience (Larrosa, 2002); Fiction (Flusser, 2007) and Virtual (Deleuze, 1988 and Lévy, 2007). The research is also based on the following writings: Alves (2005), which focus on the importance of electronic games in education; Libâneo (1999) and Demo (2004), whose writings are about the relevance of teacher s role in a world bombed by information, among others. Lüdke and André (1986) guided the choice of a qualitative methodological approach. During this phase of the investigation, it was proposed to the subject of this research the realization of planning and developing stages of History classes through the use of the game Age of Empires II and, subsequently, a reflection about this experience. The activities were planned through the game, nevertheless, before the students having contact with it, the teacher developed a class where it was privileged, theoretically, the subject to be taught in following classes. It has been collected the data through meetings, semi-structured interviews and observations of the classes. The results found have shown that the interviewee enjoyed the activity and gave his best to put into practice his planning, demonstrating that EFV works as a proposal of History teaching. The interviewee also noticed a change in the student s behavior when facing his approach and states that this motivates him to continue using the EFV in his practices. It has been observed that, by adopting the EFV, the teacher includes the students as actors in the historical time that the game portraits, making possible for them to face another way of relation with History.

Stember, Nick. "The Shanghai Manhua Society : a history of early Chinese cartoonists, 1918-1938." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/56226.

Full text
Abstract:
Towards the end of the 19th century, the first illustrated pictorials began to appear in China. Satirical cartoons found their way into Chinese newspapers and magazines over the following decades, as print technology gradually improved. By the 1910s illustrated pictorials began to proliferate, along with the first examples of humor magazines, a trend which would continue through the 1920s. By the early 1930s, China had over two dozen magazines dedicated to satirical comics, or manhua, as they came to be known. This study looks at the Manhua Society, a group of semi-professional cartoonists whose members were active in Shanghai from roughly 1918 to 1938. By pooling their resources and working under a common banner, the Manhua Society members were not only able to find employment, but also to step into the role of publishers themselves, financed by day jobs in advertising and education. This study reconstructs the history of the society using oral histories, academic studies, and primary source materials (translating many previously unavailable in English). It focuses on eight key members of the Manhua Society: Ye Qianyu, Ji Xiaobo, Ding Song, Zhang Guangyu, Lu Shaofei, Wang Dunqing, Huang Wennong, and Hu Xuguang. These men saw their careers transformed by a series of escalating military conflicts: the May 4 Movement of 1919, the Zhili-Anhui War of 1920, the first Zhili-Fengtian War of 1922, the Jiangsu-Zhejiang War and second Zhili-Fengtian War of 1924, the May 30 Movement of 1925, the Northern Expedition of 1926-1928, including the Shanghai Massacre of 1927, and the first Japanese invasions of Shanghai in 1932 and 1937. Their stories show how the history of Chinese comics was shaped by individuals, as well as organizations. Although this industry was crippled by the Japanese invasion of Shanghai in 1937, the same cartoonists would go on to work in the propaganda offices of World War II, the Chinese Civil War, and the Cold War. In tracing the origins of the Manhua Society, therefore, I argue that it influenced not only the development of cartooning and comics in the Republican era, but also the visual culture of the PRC.

Abstract:
