Abstract:
The issue of race, identity, and multiculturalism are focal points in modern novels. K. S. Maniam, as an Indian-Malaysian as such, explains the same question again in his writings. There is a longing or rather a forlorn look at India as the Motherland of some of the Indians in Malaysia in the setting of K. S. Maniam’s stories. The novel does not provide a complete recovery of the original country; it is instead giving a deep insight into finding out a connection to the place one settles in. In a Far Country is a typical example of the modern chaotic world through which Maniam sheds light on it. The research aims to analyse the redefinition of identity and determining race. It is also to explore the choices between a native and nonnative value in a foreign land. Under the analysis, Homi Bahbah’s theory of hybridity is chosen for the study of the novel. It is a significant and difficult step at the same time to reinvent one’s identity through a hybrid culture or rather to be called “reinvented” when the final solution fails and instead “reinvention” shapes a new identity.

Abstract:
Malaysia is a multicultural and multi ethnic society in which national and ethnic identities are very critical and widely disputed issues. Accordingly, several Malaysian writers such as K.S. Maniam have addressed the issues in their literary productions. This paper intends to examine the dilemmas, agonies and desolations of Indian community in Malaysia which have been reflected in K.S. Maniam’s autobiographical novel The Return (1981). In the story, Maniam voices out the experiences of Indian minority in the troubled times of Malaysia and their struggle for assimilation and adaptation to the new land as well as their identity crisis. Central characters of the story, Ravi, Periathai and Naina as three different generations of Indian migrant in the landscape of Malaysia attempt to embrace the new land as their home and build their coherent or homogeneous Malaysian identity. This paper also explores Maniam’s protagonist’s (Ravi) identity conflicts and his endeavor to escape from his unsettled identity as an Indian Malaysian. Ravi seeks his identity in mastering English, the colonial language, yet this is the very point of his alienation as he finds out that all his preconceptions about language was false and illusionary.

Abstract:
Social advertising is a widely accepted means evoking the sense of responsibility in people and helping to deal realistically with the problems of social risk groups of people (narcotic and alcohol addiction, violence, etc.). Social advertising not only spotlights these problems and suggests ways of solving them, but also promotes help and tolerance for the members of the above mentioned social risk groups. The object of the social advertising on the preventive subject ‘Mania’ is polygraphic press: posters, booklets, pocket calendars and table calendars. Six urgent social problems are dealt with in this work: indifference, narcotic addiction, tobacco addiction, violence, compulsion and alcohol addiction because people unconsciously reject the denial. The moral should be made indirectly, allowing the consumer himself/herself to comprehend the negativity of the problem. Therefore, I use the associatives in my works allowing individuals to conceive the process of creation as the essential peculiarity of the individual’s life and social environment in respect to idealistic culture and society. Associatives give space for interpretations in connecting one’s knowledge with new information. The main hypotheses in the work are the following ones: preventive advertising is expected to have an effective informative influence using associative symbols in respect to action and place; the outlined stylistics of the prospect makes contrast with a sharp preventive subject. ... Paveley, Fiona. "Mania, meaning and gender : an exploratory study to investigate women's experiences of mania." Thesis, University of East London, 2006. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3829/.

Full text
Abstract:
Research suggests that there may be gender differences in the form and course of bipolar disorder (manic depression). Much research exists that explores the relationship between gender and depression in women. The aim of this study, therefore, was to explore women's subjective experiences of mania and to examine how conceptions of gender may have shaped those experiences. This study also considered the extent to which women's experiences of mania (and depression) accord with the concept of bipolar disorder. This study was concerned with the meaning of the women's experiences within the context of their social, economic and relational lives. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore seven women's accounts of mania (and depression) which were then analysed from a Critical Realist standpoint using a qualitative approach, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Despite moments of creativity and apparent empowerment, mania emerged as a complex and often frightening phenomenon. Six themes were identified. These were concerned with: autonomy and loss of control; maintaining a coherent sense of self; 'paranoia'; a need for explanations; loss; and contradictory responses to depression. It was notable, however, that no theme was identified which was explicitly concerned with gender. Traditional categorical diagnostic approaches failed adequately to describe the women's actual experiences. It is suggested their accounts of mania (and depression) might be better accommodated within a psychological understanding of mental distress that considers the meaning and function of unusual experiences and beliefs. The clinical and theoretical implications of these findings are discussed and further areas for research outlined.

Rishworth, Barbara. "Mania, meaning and gender : an exploratory study to investigate men's experiences of mania." Thesis, University of East London, 2009. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3737/.

Abstract:
It is apparent from the literature that the accounts and descriptions of 'bipolar disorder' fail to capture the difficulties described by those who experience manic depression. The gender differences in diagnosis, the accounts and experience of manic depression (and specifically mania), have not been sufficiently explored. Furthermore, the majority of the research has been quantitative, and research that has looked at the "personal knowledge" (Peyrot, McMurry & Hedges, 1987) of individuals experiencing manic depression has been sparse. Paveley (2006) considered women's experiences within the context of their social, economic and relational lives. Paveley identified six themes: a) autonomy and the loss of control; b) maintaining a coherent sense of self; c)'paranoia'; d) a need for explanations; e) loss; and f) contradictory responses to depression. The aim of this study therefore was to explore men's experiences of mania (and depression) and to examine how conceptions of gender may have influenced those experiences within the context of their social, economic and relational lives. This study also reflected the extent to which men's experiences of mania accord with the concept of bipolar disorder. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore six men's accounts of mania (and depression) which were then analysed from a critical realist position using a qualitative approach, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Mania emerged as a complex phenomenon with related benefits and difficulties. Five themes were identified: a) Sexuality, Maleness, Femaleness and Mania; b) How I experience, relate to and value mania; c) relationships and mania; d) identity, self and where am T in the experience and e) search for explanations; "Why me? Why now? One theme was explicitly concerned with gender and how gender mediates and is impacted by mania. There was a compelling difference between the men's explicitly gendered accounts and the 'absence' of explicit gender reference in the women's accounts in Paveley's (2006) research. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed and further areas for research outlined.

Bowden, Hannah Mary. "A phenomenological study of mania and depression." Thesis, Durham University, 2013. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/9456/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I develop a cohesive phenomenological account of mania and depression. Whilst phenomenological insights have been applied to a number of psychiatric disorders – most notably schizophrenia – mania, depression, and bipolar disorder have been neglected. In developing my account I challenge the common understanding of mania and depression as opposed. Through an examination of bodily and temporal experiences in mania and depression I unearth deeper structural commonalities. This allows for greater insight into the relationship between the two states and casts light on ‘mixed episodes’, where features of mania and depression co-occur. In my exploration of bodily experience I argue for an understanding of the depressed body as ‘corporealized’. I show how this helps us to understand common descriptions of the body and the world found in first person accounts. I challenge the intuitive distinction between the body as 'active and invisible' and 'inactive and conspicuous' by showing that the manic body is both conspicuous and active. I argue that we can enhance our understanding of this bodily experience through an appreciation of the associated temporal experience. Turning to the topic of time, I reveal the inadequacies of accounts that suggest that alterations in experiences of time in mania and depression are restricted to changes in temporal velocity. Using the Husserlian concepts of ‘retention’ and ‘protention’ I develop a new model of temporal experience in mania and depression, arguing that in addition to changes in temporal 'velocity' we also find changes in temporal structure. This account allows us to understand common experiences in mania, including feelings of grandiosity, a loss of reflection, and the active yet conspicuous body. Likewise, it casts light on experiences common in depression, including guilt, a perception of recovery as impossible, and feelings of separation from others.

Tétard, Stessy. "Mandat et famille. Contribution à l'étude du contrat de mandat." Thesis, Lyon 3, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015LYO30065.

Full text
Abstract:
The mandate is a tormented contract. Fixed in a broad definition and shot through an uncontrolled diversification, it is currently hard to determine what a mandate is. The family context is symptomatic of this identity crisis. The mandate is a tool which is particularly used by the members of the family, as it is suitable for organizing the family relationships, as well as for anticipating events, such as vulnerability or death, that may create some difficulties. As a contract, it is not excessively burdensome to implement, and it deals easily with the particular features of the context. If it is normally the result of the will of two persons, the principal and the agent, nevertheless, the family context revealed that the mandate could be imposed by a family member or an external authority, such as the law or the judge. The mandate is thus directly corrupted in its essential characteristics : its source (the will) or its effects (the representation). Those original phenomena test the mandate and prompt to rethink the notion. The particularities of the family context give it a very specific ring. Therefore, it is an appealing idea to create a singled out family mandate, in order to divest from an elusive legal definition, and to shape the notion using its various applications. However, such an approach would be damaging the contract, feeding the hyperspecialization to which it is subjected. That is why another course must be taken : the mandate must be redefined. Once given a clear and precise definition, the mandate will be able to fulfill itself in many areas, without suffering any distorsion. Rebuilt on solid criteria, allowing to sort out good classifications from usurpations, the mandate will be liberated from its current fungibility and from the numerous confusions which are now detrimental to its correct understanding

Abstract:

Abstract:
The map area lies about 40 km northwest of Baffinland's iron mine. Dykes of unit mAnA3 within unit mAnA2 suggest that unit mAnA2 predates unit mAnA3. Unit nAMqf, basal Mary River Group unit, includes regolith material from units mAnA2 and mAnA3. Unit mAnAm may include some dykes of unit nAMb. The Mary River Group was deposited in a volcanic-arc environment, yielding zircon U-Pb ages mostly in the range of 2.88 to 2.72 Ga. Iron-formation (unit nAMi) is approximately 276 m thick locally, with oxide facies (unit nAMio) being most abundant. The quartzite triangle west of 'Iron lake' (unofficial name) may be a small horst. The main east-west-trending synclinal fold, including the area around 'Iron lake' and the no. 4 ore deposit, is upright, nearly isoclinal, and plunges mostly easterly at both ends with small scale anticlines and synclines in the middle. Magnetite constitutes about 75% of high-grade iron deposits in the north limb, whereas hematite predominates in south-limb deposits. K-Ar and Rb-Sr ages indicate middle Paleoproterozoic overprinting. Central Borden Fault Zone was active at ca. 1.27 Ga and during or after Ordovician time. Note: please be aware that the information contained in CGM 408 is based on legacy data from the 1960-1990s and that it has been superseded by regional-scale information contained in CGM 403.

Keil, Karen, Trudy Estes, Joseph Kreitinger, et al. Environmental evaluation and management of dredged material for beneficial use : a regional beneficial use testing manual for the Great Lakes. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/45024.

Full text
Abstract:
The Environmental Evaluation and Management of Dredged Material for Beneficial Use: A Regional Beneficial Use Testing Manual for the Great Lakes (a.k.a. Great Lakes Beneficial Use Testing Manual) is a resource document providing technical guidance for evaluating the suitability of dredged sediment for beneficial use in aquatic and terrestrial environments in the Great Lakes region. The procedures in this manual are based on the Environmental Laboratory extensive research, working with US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Great Lakes districts, state resource agencies, and local stakeholders seeking to develop dredged material beneficial use alternatives consistent with regional needs and goals. This manual is the first guidance document developed by USACE for evaluating the environmental suitability of dredged material specifically for beneficial use placements. It provides a tiered framework for evaluating the environmental suitability of aquatic and upland beneficial uses consistent with the Inland Testing Manual and the Upland Testing Manual. This manual is intended to serve as a regional platform to increase collaborative problem-solving and endorse a common understanding of the scientific and institutional practices for evaluating dredged material for any beneficial use. Dredged sediment may be managed as a valuable resource, with great potential to create economic, environmental, and social benefits.

Niazi, Fawad. CPT-Based Geotechnical Design Manual, Volume 1: CPT Interpretation—Estimation of Soil Properties. Purdue University, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317346.

Full text
Abstract:
This manual provides guidance on how to use the cone penetration test (CPT) for site investigation and foundation design. The manual has been organized into three volumes. Volume 1 covers the execution of CPT-based site investigations and presents a comprehensive literature review of CPT-based soil behavior type (SBT) charts and estimation of soil variables from CPT results. Volume 2 covers the methods and equations needed for CPT data interpretation and foundation design in different soil types, while Volume 3 includes several example problems (based on instrumented case histories) with detailed, step-by-step calculations to demonstrate the application of the design methods. The methods included in the manual are current, reliable, and demonstrably the best available for Indiana geology based on extensive CPT research carried out during the past two decades. The design of shallow and pile foundations in the manual is based on the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) framework. The manual also indicates areas of low reliability and limited knowledge, which can be used as indicators for future research.
