Abstract:
AbstractRV Tauri stars are luminous population II Cepheids which show a characteristic light curve of alternating deep and shallow minima. There are 126 RV Tauri variables in our Galaxy. Using WISE [3.4]-[4.6], [12]-[22] diagram we show that Galactic RV Tauri stars show three main types of IR properties in their SEDs; disc-type, non-IR and uncertain, which does not show a clear characteristic in the SED. We also show that there is a strong correlation between disc-type SED and binarity (Gezer et al. 2015). RV Tauri stars were linked to post AGB stars in early studies (Jura 1986), however, recent studies show that their evolutionary nature is more complex than previously thought (Kamath & Van Winckel 2014, and Manick et al. 2018). In this study, we intentionally selected two RV Tauri stars, GK Car (disc-type) and GZ Nor (uncertain), with different IR characteristics to compare their chemical and photometric properties.

Abstract:
This study investigated overinclusive and overexclusive thinking in chronic and acute schizophrenics, manics and schizoaffective schizophrenics. Comparison groups were comprised of depressives, character disorders, and borderline patients. A concept formation task was developed which allowed for a separate analysis of association and accuracy errors. The major findings were: (a) acute and chronic schizophrenics did not differ from each other but did differ from comparison-control groups; (b) the manic pattern differed from all other groups showing severe overinclusion and minimal overexclusion; (c) schizoaffective schizophrenics shared qualities of both the schizophrenic and manic groups but were equivalent to neither.

Abstract:
To evaluate qualitative differences in the nature of thought disorder, the ‘cloze’ procedure and the Scale for the Assessment of Thought, Language and Communication were used to compare speech samples from schizophrenic, depressive, manic, schizo-affective and normal subjects at two different times. At the acute phase, thought-disordered subjects (schizophrenics, manics and schizo-affectives) were less communicable than non-thought-disordered subjects (depressives and normals). Communicability increased with remission of the more flagrant features of disturbance. Comparison of the thought-disordered diagnostic groups in the rate and pattern of remission of specific features of thought disorder indicated that factors reflecting goal-disrupted cognition distinguished the groups.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between adult mood disorders and childhood psychological trauma in a developing country. METHOD: Adults with and without mood disorders were assessed in a case-control study using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Assessment of childhood trauma included physical and sexual abuse, frequent exposure to violence, and parental loss. RESULTS: In two independent multivariate analyses, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, we found a higher odds ratio for frequent exposure to violence in the community (p = .037) and for physical abuse by parents or caregivers during childhood/adolescence (p = .012) in the group with mood disorders than in the control group. In secondary analyses splitting the mood disorder group in two subgroups (manic episode, and major depressive episodes/ dysthymia), only manic patients showed significantly higher rates of frequent exposure to violence in the community (p = 0.01) and physical abuse during childhood (p = 0.02) than did patients in the control group. In addition, maniac patients had significantly higher rates of sexual abuse than did controls (p = .03). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings document an association between violence during childhood and adult mood disorders, especially for manic patients, in a developing country.

Abstract:
153 patients with primary episode of bipolar affective disorder were divided to three groups: with prevalence of depressive symptomatology (44 men and 75 women), with prevalence of manic symptoms (15 men and 8 women) and with simultaneous presence of depressive and manic symptomatology or with rapid or severe manic symptoms (6 men and 5 women) and were examined using the Rey–Osterrieth test. It was found that they had impaired cognitive functioning whose structure and severity were related to the clinical type of the primary episode. In patients with depressive variant revealed approximately equal deterioration of test performance across all assessment vectors, while reproduction (immediate and delayed) observed synchronous deterioration of indicators, with the degree of deterioration of characteristics between copying and immediate and retarded reproduction. In the manic variant the performance of test is significantly different from the depressive variant. Patients with a manic variant showed the lowest indicators in the presence of individual elements of the figure, accuracy and diligence. At the same time, indicators for most estimation vectors are unstable, varying with immediate and delayed reproduction without some systematicity. Such features reflect on the cognitive functions of the maniac state with its acceleration of the speed of thinking, its chaos, instability of attention, difficulties of concentration and inability to productive activity. In patients with mixed episode, the Ray–Osterrieth test scores reflect complex contradictory tendencies of changes in the affective area, related to the rapid phase change and the presence of opposite affective manifestations. Quantitative values of indicators in patients of this group has an intermediate position between indicators of patients with depressive and manic variants. Common disorders inherent in patients of all groups were distortion of the integrity and symmetry of the figure, contamination of the elements of the figure and the omission of minor details. The differences in the structure and severity of cognitive impairment between men and women are not statistically significant.

Abstract:
The value of color preference as a diagnostic sign was examined by comparing the data of manics, schizophrenics, and normal controls. The rank-order of preference for 8 color cards (blue, green, red, yellow, purple, brown, black, and grey) was determined for a group of 14 bipolar patients (diagnosed by DSM‐III- R) all of which currently showed manic symptoms and who also fulfilled the ICD-9 criteria for affective psychosis. The same data were obtained from 20 ICD-9 schizophrenics and from 29 normal controls (factory workers and psychiatric nurses). The analyses of variance showed no significant differences (p .05) between the 3 groups with respect to preference for any of the 8 colors. Clinicians are cautioned against the use of Luescher's Color Test as a diagnostic tool.

Abstract:
There is paucity of computed tomography (CT) studies from developing countries, where schizophrenia is said to have more favourable outcome and present predominantly with positive symptoms. We highlight the densitometric analysis of frontal and parietal areas, assessed by tracing of regions of interest on the slice that passes through the foramen of Monro and the pineal gland. The relationships of the density values with clinical and CT measures were investigated. Fifty schizophrenics, 14 manic and 41 normal subjects were compared. The schizophrenics were assessed with Andreasen’s scale for negative symptoms, and outcome was based on the social and clinical condition in the past year. There were no significant differences in mean ages and brain slice area across the groups. In analysis of variance, schizophrenics and manics had significantly higher frontal density than normals. Schizophrenics had significantly higher parietal density than manics and normals (p< 0.001). Parietal density was significantly higher than frontal density, for schizophrenics and normals (p< 0.001). For the patients, density values were not significantly correlated with linear CT measures of atrophy (e.g. ventricle: brain area ratio) and duration of illness. Density values were not significantly associated with outcome, presence of negative symptoms, and visual ratings of cortical sulci and central atrophy. Our findings indicate that schizophrenia in developing countries is also associated with non-specific brain abnormalities.

Perry, Chris, John Buhrman, Casey Pirnstill, and John McIntire. "ATD Biodynamics During Lateral Impact for USAF Neck Injury Criteria." Safety 5, no. 4 (2019): 71. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/safety5040071.

Full text
Abstract:
Research was conducted involving a series of lateral impact tests on a horizontal sled facility by scientists at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The purpose of the research was to conduct an assessment of the biodynamic response of an anthropomorphic test device (ATD) to support the development of AFRL neck injury criteria. Impacts were completed using a 50th male Hybrid III aerospace ATD due to this ATD being used by the USAF to qualify and evaluate ejection systems. A test matrix was developed to assess ATD response as a function of various seat configurations which were an approximation of the seat configurations used by the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) for previously conducted lateral impact tests of PMHS subjects (post-mortem human subjects). The specially fabricated seat configurations were a rigid seat fixture with a 5-point harness and a padded rigid seat with a 3-point harness. The input acceleration pulses were trapezoidal in shape and varied in peak magnitude from 8.5 to 17 G. The rigid and padded seat configurations both generated fairly linear ATD responses across the input acceleration range. The ATD’s response with the padded seat and the 3-point restraint was greater than the ATD’s response with the rigid seat and the 5-point restraint with the upper neck. The My torque showed the greatest increase from the rigid seat configuration to the padded seat configuration. This highlights the importance of a proper restraint and the importance of controlling the motion of the torso since it could reduce the loads and torques of the unrestrained head and neck, resulting in a lower probability of injury. The lateral impact program with the ATD provided critical impact data to fill data gaps that support the development of the ATD-to-human transfer functions for AFRL’s Multi-Axial Neck Injury Criteria (MANIC) for lateral impact or MANICy calculation. The program also highlighted gaps in human and PMHS head response data in identical lateral impact configurations that would not only improve the current MANICy transfer function but would allow the investigation of the efficacy of using the 6F-MANICy to replace the current MANICy.

Bennett, Charles B. "Independence of Mania and Depression across 4 Years in Bipolar Disorder." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2019. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1505184/.

Abstract:
If mania and depression are part of the same pathological processes, one would predict that episodes of one prospectively increase the odds of episodes of the other. The aim of the present study was to test this hypothesis. For comparison purposes, their relationship was contrasted to the relationship between mania and periods of psychosis. Exploratory analyses also tested the degree to which episodes of each occur with greater frequency over time (i.e., kindling). Participants for the present study came from the Suffolk County Mental Health Project (N = 628), a study of first-admission patients with psychosis. Of these participants, 144 met diagnostic criteria for bipolar I disorder and were analyzed for the current study. Results indicated that mania in a given month predicted depression the following month, even after controlling for other symptoms. The reverse, however, was not the case. Mania and psychosis, in contrast, were found to be robust predictors of one another from month to month. Effects were not due to treatment or demographic differences. These findings provide evidence that mania and depression are weakly related. In contrast, mania and psychosis are more closely linked. Findings are consistent with suggestions that psychiatric nosology regroup mania more closely with thought disorders rather than with internalizing or depressive ones. They also alert clinicians to the strong, longitudinal persistence and comorbidity among these syndromes.

Jacobs, Emma Anne. "Living with manic experiences : an interpretative phenomenological analysis." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/4541.

Full text
Abstract:
Although psychological research into manic experiences is increasing, it remains an underresearched phenomenon. In particular, there is a dearth of qualitative research exploring these experiences in a clinical sample of people diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. This study examined six participants’ experiences of mania using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Through semi-structured interviews, the participants provided detailed accounts of how they made sense of and experienced their manic states. Three master themes were described: “A mixed relationship with mania,” “A separate and controlled self”, and “The struggle to be different.” The first master theme explored the participants’ mixed and ambivalent relationship with their manic experiences. These were viewed as both alluring and dangerous, but overall the perceived costs had outweighed the benefits, for all but one of the participants. Most participants described losses in relation to giving up their manic experiences, as well as losses related to the destructive consequences of their episodes. The second master theme examined perceptions of mania as a separate, uncontrollable phenomenon, over which they had little influence. It was hypothesised that these explanations served to relieve these participants from underlying negative emotions, such as guilt, regret, shame and selfstigma. The third master theme described how manic experiences had represented struggles to be different. These included a struggle against society; a struggle to experience a preferred self; and a struggle to access very unique experiences or abilities. A number of issues were discussed in relation to the above themes. These included positive and conflicting appraisals of high moods; loss; entrapment and helplessness; ambivalence; negative moral emotions and a preferred manic identity. A range of therapeutic approaches were suggested as potentially helpful for some of these issues. These included Motivational Interviewing, Narrative, Constructivist and Compassion therapies. Additionally, the findings of the study provided support for existing therapies for Bipolar Disorder; particularly Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal & Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT).

Abstract:
It is predominantly composed of Late Archaean granite-greenstone terrains representing the eastern extension of the Zimbabwe craton. The Manica greenstone belt is dominated by an EW trending series of ultramafic/mafic metavolcanics (Macequece formation) unconformably overlain by a clastic metasedimentary sequence (M’Beza – Vengo formation). Despite the lack of precise geochronological data, lithostratigraphic correlations suggest that the Macequece formation may correspond to the Bulawayan Group (3.5-2.7 Ga) and the M’Beza – Vengo formation to the Shamvaian Group (2.65- 2.6 Ga). In the Manica area, the plutonic association is represented by large batholiths of granitoid rocks bordering the greenstone belt (external plutons) and several stocks within the belt (internal plutons) with ages ranging between 2.7 e 2.6 Ga. On the basis of their mineralogical and geochemical characteristics, the Manica granitoids have been subdivided into two main groups: (a) the tonalite-granodiorite-trondjemite – TTG - series and (b) the K-rich monzogranite suite. The samples studied in this thesis are all located in intrusive bodies belonging to the TTG series according to the available geological maps. However, some of these samples show affinities with the group of K-rich granitoids and have therefore been treated separately. The geochemical signature of the TTG suite is consistent with an origin by partial melting of subducted oceanic crust with amphibolitic composition, leaving behind a residue of garnet, amphibole and Ti oxides. This was possible only because the geothermal gradient prevailing in the Archaean was significantly higher than that existing in recent subduction environments. For the genesis of the K-rich granitoids, two alternative scenarios can be envisaged: (a) fractional crystallization from TTG magmas or (b) partial melting of Archaean continental crust.

Abstract:
Social advertising is a widely accepted means evoking the sense of responsibility in people and helping to deal realistically with the problems of social risk groups of people (narcotic and alcohol addiction, violence, etc.). Social advertising not only spotlights these problems and suggests ways of solving them, but also promotes help and tolerance for the members of the above mentioned social risk groups. The object of the social advertising on the preventive subject ‘Mania’ is polygraphic press: posters, booklets, pocket calendars and table calendars. Six urgent social problems are dealt with in this work: indifference, narcotic addiction, tobacco addiction, violence, compulsion and alcohol addiction because people unconsciously reject the denial. The moral should be made indirectly, allowing the consumer himself/herself to comprehend the negativity of the problem. Therefore, I use the associatives in my works allowing individuals to conceive the process of creation as the essential peculiarity of the individual’s life and social environment in respect to idealistic culture and society. Associatives give space for interpretations in connecting one’s knowledge with new information. The main hypotheses in the work are the following ones: preventive advertising is expected to have an effective informative influence using associative symbols in respect to action and place; the outlined stylistics of the prospect makes contrast with a sharp preventive subject. ... Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This brief outlines findings on how the 54.6 km South Commuter Railway (SCR) to be built between Metro Manila and Laguna province in the Philippines is expected to improve access to jobs. A quantitative analysis estimates that residents of cities and municipalities with an SCR station will be able to reach an average of 300,000 extra jobs within a 1-hour commute—an increase of 15.3% in the south and 8.5% in Metro Manila. This could lead to better labor market matching, higher income for workers and more job opportunities for low-income households. The study contributes to efforts to quantify the wider economic benefits of infrastructure projects, especially efficient urban transport systems.
