Abstract:
Language provides us with a powerful tool to articulate and express ourselves! Understanding and harnessing the expressions of natural language can open the doors to a vast array of creative applications. In this work we explore one such application - natural language based image editing. We propose a novel framework to go from free-form natural language commands to performing fine-grained image edits. Recent progress in the field of deep learning has motivated solving most tasks using end-to-end deep convolutional frameworks. Such methods have shown to be very successful even achieving super-

In this study, the manipulations of history and language in the dystopias of &ldquo
Nineteen Eighty-Four&rdquo
by George Orwell, &ldquo
We&rdquo
by Yevgeni Zamyatin and &ldquo
Brave New World&rdquo
by Aldous Huxley are examined. The principal aim of this investigation is to demonstrate that in these imaginary societies absolute stability is achieved through the manipulations of these two domains. The thesis argues that if the domains of history and language are not taken under control, they are to provide the subjects with the standard of comparisons which would enable them t

Abstract:
The question arises in the analysis of foreign policy decision making regarding how consensus or approval by the public is attained for policies. Some authors have suggested that consensus is obtained through the manipulation of opinion by decision makers. One case often cited as an example of manipulation is the 1947 announcement of the Truman Doctrine. In determining the validity of these arguments a review was conducted of the language of the doctrine and the interpretations of newspaper columnists. In addition, a review of personal documents of the decision makers was conducted to determin

Ma, Weixi. "THE DRAG LANGUAGE." UKnowledge, 2016. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/cs_etds/41.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the Drag language. Drag is a general purpose, gradually typed, lexically scoped, and multi-paradigm pro- gramming language. The essence of Drag is to build the abstract syntax trees of the programs directly and interactively. Our work includes the language specification and a prototype program. The language specification focuses on the syntax, the semantic model, and the type system. The prototype consists of an interactive editor and a compiler that targets several plat- forms, among which we focus on the LLVM platform in this thesis.

Abstract:
Despite the great diversity of Tanith Lee's work - from science fiction short stories to epic historical novels - certain underlying themes and references consistently appear. This thesis examines Lee's applications of such themes and subtexts, arguing that her work is primarily Gothic regardless of which other genre coventions she uses. By offering a detailed assessment of her fairy tale retellings, this study demonstrates the prevalence of the themes, images and effects that have come to define the Gothic. Lee has developed several subversive narrative strategies that enable her to explore t

Abstract:
This study describes a series of case studies on topic management patterns of five children (ages 5 to 10 years) with language impairment. The children participated in semi-structured topic tasks that assessed conversational abilities on topics that were verbally introduced and topics that were introduced both verbally and with an object. Although there was considerable variability among participants, the children generally responded to most introductions by acknowledging and maintaining the topic. With the exception of one child, however, the children in this study demonstrated immature topic
