Abstract Manipuri women are much adulated and glorified by various sections of society. The media also report their active participation in economic, civil and political life. This however represents only a slice of their lives. The larger picture that is woven around their private lives, which play out in a multitude of ways to define their place in society is invariably lost in this glorification. This paper traces the emergence of women, their participation in public life, and their glorification, to the epoch-making NupiLaan movement that took place in 1939. This event is observed t

Exploring the realms of suffering of the marginalized ones is the forte of Mahasweta Devi’s writings. Associating her socio-political activism, Devi’s works portray the concept of the gendered subaltern, which implies the extreme subalternation of women based on gender and nationality, caste or class. Many of her influential writings have asserted the perspective of women, alienated from the patriarchal pole. Moreover, she has mainly concentrated on the abject suffering of the tribal women, for whom oppression has become a common fate in the orthodox patriarchal society. What is in

The atroci-ty, which has been meted out on the people of Manipur because of this Act, is a profound violation of human rights. Rape, mindless killings, kidnapping, fake encounters have been normalised by virtue of this Act. The youths have been badly affected due to the conflict emerging out of this Act which treats people in Manipur as ‘objects’ against the imagined boundaries of the Indian nation-state for sec

In this essay, I explore Manipur-based women’s group called Meira Paibi as a postcolonial counterpublic. I suggest that when we use the lens offered by counterpublic studies and postcolonial studies, we can trace activism that delivers a sharp critique on the politics of a democracy. The current research on Meira Paibi’s activism has specifically focused on their naked protest of 2004 and their peacebuilding activities in the northeast region in India. While scholarship on the Meira Paibi offers critiques on their activism in the face of human rights violations and the postcolonial condition o

Abstract The Meitei society in Manipur is steeped in traditions and cultural mores. While some are extremely enriching, some are dubiously challenging or serve to undermine the agency of a woman. These exercise immense social control over the society and lay the context as well as define and confine hierarchical gender relations. Hence, a reflexive understanding of this complex relationship is vital towards understanding gender dynamics in this small but very vibrant society. Abstract Hailed as an “Iche” (elder sister), Irom Sharmila is the subject of many genres—poetry, songs, documentary films, and artwork. This chapter looks at the activist-poet’s collection Fragrance of Peace (2010) to examine the paradoxical way her body is seen as a site of resistance, her naming and identification through the kin term “sister,” and her status within Manipuri literature. It is significant that Irom is a rarely anthologized poet. Her work cannot be found in any anthologies on the literature of Northeast India, while, ironically, writings about her activism abound. Night interruption treatments effectively delayed flowering and increased biomass and steviol glycoside concentrations, with 20-minute light exposure yielding the highest improvements.
