Abstract:
By 1926 Manitoba had a population one-third that of Minnesota, and yet the bank resources it accumulated to that year represented only one-tenth that of Minnesota banks. What can explain the much higher generation of banking resources in Minnesota and Minneapolis as compared with a much lower generation of resources in Manitoba and Winnipeg? A study of the number of branches in Manitoba and the level of cheque clearances in Winnipeg reveal that these branches were as vigorous as the number of unit banks and cheque clearances in Minnesota. However, by comparing the growth of Minneapolis industries with those in Winnipeg, it becomes apparent that Winnipeggers did not, as Minneapolis entrepreneurs did, develop the specialized manufacturing for export, the consequent company head offices, and the transportation services necessary to generate endogenous capital resources. Rather Winnipeg branches were the result of a banking system transported from Montreal and Toronto which, at the same time, it supplied financial resources for Manitobans, also served the goals of its Central Canadian directors and shareholders, and therefore, proceeded to integrate Winnipeg commercial resources into this central urban network. The Minneapolis industrial entrepreneurs, by contrast, established banks which generated their own financial resources and banking procedures. This meant that the Minneapolis bank owners were determined to shape the investment and growth of their metropolitan region. In Winnipeg, however, the branches served their Montreal and Toronto owners who were determined to encase Winnipeg businesses firmly within that Central Canadian urban system.

Abstract:
AbstractThe contact toxicities of 11 insecticides were determined with a Potter spray tower using adults of crucifer flea beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) collected from three locations over a 3-year period. Flea beetles collected from an experimental farm at London, Ontario, where no insecticides had been used, were compared with those from canola-growing areas near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg, Manitoba. Lindane, in a seed dressing, is widely used in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba whereas carbofuran, as in-furrow granules, has been more heavily used in Manitoba than in Saskatchewan. The flea beetles from Winnipeg were significantly less susceptible to all three carbamates tested (carbofuran, carbaryl, oxamyl) than those from Saskatoon or London. Both the Winnipeg and Saskatoon flea beetles were significantly less susceptible to methamidophos than the London population but not to the other organophosphates, the organochlorine (endosulfan), or the pyrethroids that were tested. These differences may indicate resistance in the Manitoba population, but this low level would not affect the efficacy of the currently recommended insecticides. The results emphasize the need to develop control strategies that will minimize the chances that the level of resistance will increase.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective: Specialized health services such as blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) are based in large urban centres. A previous study suggested that rural patients may have inferior outcomes after BMT. We hypothesized that rural Manitobans have reduced access to BMT and higher mortality rates after BMT than urban Manitobans. Methods: This population-based historical cohort study was based in Manitoba, Canada, a province of 1.2 million people that is served by a single, publicly funded BMT program. We utilized data from both the Manitoba BMT Program and the provincial Cancer Registry. Consecutive adult Manitobans who underwent BMT at Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg between 01/1990 and 12/2006 were assessed. We analyzed distance of residence from the BMT centre, disease and BMT characteristics, and calculated overall survival (OS). Secondly, to measure access to BMT, we evaluated all patients with newly diagnosed Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) during this same period. We compared the proportion of rural and urban Manitobans diagnosed with HL to those who received a BMT for HL. Results: 464 Manitobans underwent BMT (179 rural, 285 urban). Rural Manitobans had inferior 5 year OS (45% vs. 37%, p<0.05). A gradient was apparent; patients who lived < 20 km from the BMT centre had superior 5 year OS, while those furthest away (>200km) had the poorest OS (p<0.05). In a univariate Cox regression model, rural patients had a mortality ratio of 1.18 (p <0.05), and those living 200km or more from Winnipeg had a mortality ratio of 1.40 (p = NS). When adjusted for gender, age at BMT, year of BMT, and graft type, distance from HSC was not a significant predictor of mortality. Only period of BMT and graft type were significant predictors. A relative survival analysis was also conducted. This model included only those variables available in population data (age at BMT, gender, distance from Winnipeg, year of BMT). In univariate analysis, rural patients had an excess mortality ratio of 1.35 (p <0.05), and those living more than 200 km from Winnipeg had had an excess mortality ratio of 1.52 (p = NS). However, in the adjusted relative survival analysis, distance from Winnipeg was not a significant predictor. Again, period of BMT was a significant predictor. 432 Manitobans were diagnosed with HL. 182 (42%) were rural, and 250 (58%) were urban. This was similar to 2006 Canadian census data for Manitoba, (54% urban). In contrast, 69% of patients undergoing transplant for HL were urban. Conclusions: Previous research has suggested that rural patients undergoing BMT have a higher risk of death. Using population-based data from a Canadian province, we were unable to demonstrate this finding. Both the Cox regression model and the relative survival analysis demonstrated non-significant associations between location and mortality after controlling for other variables. This may be due to relatively small number of patients residing 200 or more km from Winnipeg in our study. However, the non-significant relationship may also be due to more comprehensive long-term follow-up of patients within the BMT program. Lastly, there may be under-utilization of BMT in rural populations; this is an area that deserves further study.

Abstract:
This study compared tonsillectomy rates for Manitoba children across geographic regions and over time. Shortly after the publication of clinical guidelines for tonsillectomy, provincial rates of this procedure dropped by over 25% between 1994/95 and 1996/97. By 1998/99, rates for non-Winnipeg children had increased to pre-guideline levels, whereas the rates for Winnipeg children remained lower. Significant regional variation existed in all years examined, suggesting that quality of care remains an issue for this procedure.

The University of Winnipeg is a bustling campus situated in Winnipeg’s downtown. Within the space of one city block, some eight thousand students pursue degrees, diplomas and certificate programs in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Education. Most courses lead to the three or four-year B.A. or B.Sc. or the four-year Honours degree; the five-year integrated B.Ed./B.A. or B.Sc. program combining academic and professional courses is increasingly popular. Master’s programs are offered by the Faculty of Theology and a small number of Joint Master’s programs is available in conjunction with the University’s sister institution, the University of Manitoba. Although there is no department of Medieval Studies as such or an interdisciplinary program, several departments do offer courses that introduce undergraduate students to the field.

Abstract:
Groundwater from the Carbonate Rock Aquifer is extensively used for cooling purposes in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This paper examines the factors affecting the magnitude and timing of temperature increases at production wells in groundwater-source cooling applications through numerical modeling and observations at a case study site. Generic simulations carried out using typical hydrogeologic parameters for the Carbonate Rock Aquifer suggested that temperature increases of a few degrees occur at a typical production well only a few years after the start of operation in a given system. Spacing of the wells and pumping rates were found to have a greater affect than material properties in a homogeneous aquifer. A case study of a thermal doublet in the Winnipeg area indicated, however, that heterogeneities are capable of causing a departure from the predicted temperatures of the generic models. The case study showed that it is possible to make reasonable predictions of the behaviour of the subsurface temperature field during thermal development of the Carbonate Rock Aquifer. Temperature records of the length used in this study will not be available in new developments, however, and efforts must be made to conduct more extensive field investigations to ensure that designs can properly account for geologic conditions.Key words: geothermal energy, fractured rock, Carbonate Rock Aquifer, Winnipeg, Manitoba, injection, heat flow.

Abstract:
Gibberella zeae (anamorph Fusarium graminearum) causes Fusarium head blight, one of the most important diseases of cereals in the Canadian prairies for the last decade. In 2002, 60 isolates of G. zeae were collected and single spored from naturally infected spikes of wheat from Carman and Winnipeg in Manitoba. These isolates were compared using vegetative compatibility analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based sequence related amplified polymorphisms (SRAP). Sixteen vegetative compatibility groups (VCG) were found among the 50 isolates tested. Five VCGs were found in the two locations, five in Carman and six in Winnipeg. Eight SRAP primer pairs amplified 90 polymorphic DNA fragments from 60 isolates and identified 59 distinct haplotypes. Among seven pairs of isolates, each pair from a distinct spike, four had isolates with different VCGs and six comprised different SRAP haplotypes. Principal component analysis and UPGMA separated the dataset into two main groups, each with isolates from both locations. The analysis of molecular variance also revealed that 75 and 20% of the variance was associated with differences among individual isolates and varieties sampled, respectively. Geographic location was not a significant source of variation at P = 0.05 and accounted for only 4% of total variance. A low correlation between VCG and SRAP marker data was detected. This study showed that, although genetic diversity is high among G. zeae isolates, Carman and Winnipeg collections have a similar genetic makeup and are likely part of the same population. The significant proportion of variance accounted by the variety compared with the geographic origin of isolates suggests that seedborne inoculum might have contributed to the genetic diversity within the G. zeae collection under study.

Abstract:
AbstractGeneral properties of the Canadian English vowel space are derived from an experimental-acoustic study of vowel production underway in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Comparing the preliminary Winnipeg results with similar data from General American English confirms previously described generalizations for Canadian English: the merger of low-back vowels, the relative retraction of /æ/, and the relative advancement of /u/ and /Ʊ/. However, a similar comparison of the Winnipeg sample with comparable Southern California data disputes the accuracy of the claim that Canadian Shift (Clarke et al. 1995) is a feature of ‘general’ Canadian and Californian English. An acoustic analysis uncovers subtle phonetic distinctions that make possible a more precise characterization of Canadian Raising: rather than only adjusting the height of the nucleus, Winnipeg speakers produce a directional shift in both the nucleus and offglide of the diphthongs /aɪ, aƱ/; this process applies to all three diphthongs (including /oɪ/).

Preston and Westwood (1981) reported on the distribution of Thymelicus lineola (Ochsenheimer) in Manitoba. They suggested that the species arrived here about 1970 by way of northwestern Ontario. At that time the population in central Winnipeg was the most western known in the Prairie region and they suggested that the spread of the species might be impeded by the arid nature of the Great Plains to the west. Klassen et al. (1989) noted that specimens subsequently had been taken 70 km west of Winnipeg at Rathwell(49°39'N; 98°33'W) near the western edge of the Red River Valley soils on the eastern edge of the Prairie. In 1986 Preston and McKillop collected the European Skipper at Eriksdale (50°52'N; 98°06'W) 100 km to the northwest of Winnipeg in the marginal lands of the interlake region (Klassen et al. 1989).

Abstract:
AbstractIn a universally-insured health care system, closing hospital beds inevitably becomes a hot political issue and the media often become the vehicle for debate and pressure from special interest groups. This study uses data from a representative sample of Manitoba older persons, interviewed before and again one year after the substantial downsizing of the hospital sector in Winnipeg. We compare the responses of Winnipeg residents with those of non-Winnipeg residents to questions about their opinion regarding the overall quality of health care and access to hospital care. Also compared were the responses to the same questions by older persons who were hospitalized before the first interview, those hospitalized before the second interview and those who were not hospitalized. Despite experiencing no bed closures outside Winnipeg, the opinions about the overall quality of care among both non-Winnipeggers and Winnipeggers were less favourable after the Winnipeg downsizing and the accompanying negative publicity. However, the opinions about quality and access among those who were actually hospitalized when most of the beds were being closed were significantly more favourable than among those hospitalized before the bed closures or not hospitalized at all.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the determinants of pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) infection in Canada among low-income, inner city populations. To inform future influenza planning, the seroprevalence of pH1N1 antibodies among inner city clinic attendees in Winnipeg (Manitoba) according to sociodemographic and risk factor characteristics were estimated and vaccination rates were explored.METHODS: Adults presenting to three inner city community clinics in Winnipeg from October 2009 to December 2009 were recruited as study participants (n=458). A questionnaire was administered to collect demographic, risk factor and symptom information, and a venous blood sample was collected for hemagglutination inhibition assay testing to detect the presence of antibodies against pH1N1.RESULTS: Approximately one-half (53%) of the study participants reported an annual household income of <$10,000/year, and 65% identified as Aboriginal. pH1N1 positivity was 5.7% among those enrolled early in the study and 15.5% among those enrolled later in the study. Positivity was higher among participants who were female, Aboriginal and in contact with children ≤5 years of age. The overall pH1N1 vaccination rate was 28%.DISCUSSION: pH1N1 positivity was high among low-income adults accessing clinics in Winnipeg’s inner city compared with the general population. Of further concern were the low rates of uptake of both seasonal and pH1N1 influenza vaccinations. When planning for future influenza outbreaks, it is important to incorporate strategies for the prevention, control, and care of influenza among low-income and inner city adults.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As part of the University of Manitoba Libraries Outreach Services, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) Virtual Library provides library services to hospitals, health centres, community health agencies, and personal care homes throughout the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. All services of the WRHA Virtual Library, including the collection, are entirely virtual, though staff are physically located in the University’s health library. In March 2020, shortly after the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, libraries around the world started closing their doors and staff were required to work from home. The virtual infrastructure of our services and collections required no changes in how our patrons accessed the Virtual Library and a smooth transition was expected, but the sudden shift to working from home revealed gaps. This article discusses the unique experience of the WRHA Virtual Library transitioning to a completely virtual environment, the previous reliance on the University’s physical infrastructure, and the inequities identified between librarians and library technicians.

Abstract:
AbstractPuparia of Delia radicum collected in late autumn at Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie (Manitoba), St-Jean-sur-Richelieu (Quebec), London (Ontario), and St. John’s (Newfoundland) were parasitized mainly by Aleochara bilineata (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) and Trybliographa rapae (Westwood) (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). At Winnipeg, St-Jean, and St. John’s parasitism by A. bilineata was high (<94%) and by T. rapae was low (<3%). At London, both parasitoids attacked less than 14% of the host puparia. At Winnipeg, host population density was related to parasitism by A. bilineata and to the temperature and rainfall during June and July. Parasitism by A. bilineata may be related to cumulative degree-days over 5°C during June and July at Winnipeg and during June and September at London. In Canada, the parasitoid complex is not effectively stabilizing host population density. The introduction of additional parasitoid species should be considered.

Abstract:
While criminologists have made the case that a “punitive turn,” spurred on by penal populism, is being witnessed in several Western countries, some have argued that Canada is the exception to this trend. But recent developments in Winnipeg, Manitoba suggest that a made-in-America crime control strategy—zero-tolerance policing—has been imported into the Winnipeg context to combat the pressing problems of drugs, gangs, and violence in inner-city communities. Can this development be interpreted as evidence of a punitive turn? Has penal populism found its way into a Canadian jurisdiction? Drawing on interviews with inner-city residents, businesspeople, and community workers, we show that people in Winnipeg’s inner city have a sophisticated understanding of the causes of social problems in their neighbourhoods and a very clear vision of what they believe the role of police in the inner city should be: one in which the police work with the community as part of a wider effort of community mobilization. These findings do not support the view that Winnipeg is a Canadian exception to the punitive turn. Rather, they suggest the presence of community resistance to aggressive “get tough” strategies of crime control, and of the potential to fashion radically different solutions to the complex problems confronting inner-city communities.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Orbital cellulitis is a serious, vision-threatening infection.OBJECTIVE: To review the epidemiology and clinical data of pediatric orbital cellulitis in Manitoba.METHODS: A 12-year retrospective review was conducted of all children (younger than 18 years of age) with orbital cellulitis admitted to Manitoba’s only tertiary pediatric centre. Admission rates for orbital cellulitis were compared over three distinct time periods, based on licensure and funding levels of the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) in Manitoba.RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients with orbital cellulitis were identified. Of these, 11% were of Aboriginal ethnicity in contrast with 30% to 40% of children who were admitted for other respiratory illnesses. Subperiosteal abscesses occurred in 31.5%. Only eight patients (21%) required surgery. Follow-up imaging after presentation usually did not indicate a need for subsequent surgical drainage. The mean number of orbital cellulitis cases per 1000 admissions for the following periods – before PCV7 licensure, after licensure and before full provincial funding, and after licensure and full funding – were 0.39, 0.53 and 0.90, respectively. No significant difference was noted among any of the periods as PCV7 coverage increased.CONCLUSIONS: The rate of subperiosteal abscesses was lower than other reports. This may be due to the median age at presentation. In contrast to admissions for most other respiratory infections at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Aboriginal ethnicity was uncommon. Surprisingly, rates of admissions for orbital cellulitis appeared to show an increasing trend with increasing access to PCV7 in Manitoba, although overall the number of cases was very small. Studies into the changing microbiology of orbital cellulitis and sinusitis are warranted.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) bowel colonization in hospitalized patients in Manitoba who had stool specimens collected forClostridium difficiletoxin and/or culture testing.DESIGN: Two tertiary care and five community hospitals in Winnipeg and three rural Manitoba community hospitals participated in this study. From January 1 to December 31, 1997 stool specimens, one per patient, submitted to hospital microbiology laboratories forC difficiletoxin and/or culture testing were screened for VRE on colistin-nalidixic acid-vancomycin (6 g/mL) (CNAV) agar plates. The study was divided into six, eight-week intervals. Stool specimens received in the first two weeks of each eight week interval were screened for VRE.MAIN RESULTS A total of 1408 stool specimens were submitted over the 48-week study period. Sixty-seven (4.8%) patients with VRE colonization of their lower gastrointestinal tract were identified. Three of the 67 (4.5%) VRE isolates wereEnterococcus faecium, with the remaining 64 (95.5%) wereEnterococcus gallinarum. The three vancomycin-resistantE faecium(VREF) (from two different Winnipeg hospitals) demonstrated the vanA genotype, and were resistant to vancomycin, teicoplanin and ampicillin. All three VREF isolates also demonstrated high level resistance to both gentamicin and streptomycin but were susceptible to quinuprisitin/dalfopristin and LY333328.CONCLUSION: VRE colonization in hospitalized patients in Manitoba is infrequent and most commonly due toE gallinarum. The prevalence of VREF colonization in the patients studied was 0.2% (three of 1408).

Abstract:
Lake Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada), the world’s 12th largest lake by area, is host to yearly cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) dominated by Aphanizomenon and Dolichospermum. cHABs in Lake Winnipeg are primarily a result of eutrophication but may be exacerbated by the recent introduction of dreissenid mussels. Through multiple methods to monitor the potential for toxin production in Lake Winnipeg in conjunction with environmental measures, this study defined the baseline composition of a Lake Winnipeg cHAB to measure potential changes because of dreissenid colonization. Surface water samples were collected in 2013 from 23 sites during summer and from 18 sites in fall. Genetic data and mass spectrometry cyanotoxin profiles identified microcystins (MC) as the most abundant cyanotoxin across all stations, with MC concentrations highest in the north basin. In the fall, mcyA genes were sequenced to determine which species had the potential to produce MCs, and 12 of the 18 sites were a mix of both Planktothrix and Microcystis. Current blooms in Lake Winnipeg produce low levels of MCs, but the capacity to produce cyanotoxins is widespread across both basins. If dreissenid mussels continue to colonize Lake Winnipeg, a shift in physicochemical properties of the lake because of faster water column clearance rates may yield more toxic blooms potentially dominated by microcystin producers.

Abstract:
Our study documents and analyzes the absence of genetic diversity and structure of the Mapleleaf (Quadrula quadrula (Rafinesque, 1820)) (Bivalvia: Unionidae) mussel in the Lake Winnipeg, Assiniboine River, and Red River drainages (Manitoba, Canada). Previous studies have revealed patterns of genetic diversity and structure in the Mississippi and Ohio river drainages, as well as in the Laurentian Great Lakes drainage. Genotypes from six variable microsatellite loci showed that the Q. quadrula population in Manitoba was significantly differentiated from the population in the Great Lakes drainage (Ontario, Canada), supporting the existence of two Designatable Units in Canada. Conversely, there was no evidence of genetic structure within the sampled range of Q. quadrula in Manitoba. The lack of genetic structure in Q. quadrula across its distribution in Manitoba reflected its post-glacial history and use of a vagile host and necessitates that efforts should be made to ensure connectivity and maintain gene flow across the region. Given that the evidence suggests that Manitoba Q. quadrula belong to a single genetic population, movement of hatchery-propagated juvenile Q. quadrula, adult Q. quadrula, or glochidia-carrying host catfish sourced from any location in Manitoba could be used to augment declining populations or at-risk locations in Manitoba.
