Abstract:
The Community of a Shared Future for Mankind seeks to mitigate the world’s current challenges, and to create a more sustainable future through better global governance. Some of the philosophical arguments of the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind, and its foundations, which this article traces, are grounded in the philosophical teachings of Confucius and Mencius. The five pillars of Confucianism are benevolence (Ren), righteousness (Yi), propriety (Li), wisdom (Zhi) and fidelity (Xin). The five pillars have their equivalents in the philosophy of the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind: benevolence has its equivalents in multilateral and bilateral agreements; righteousness shows justice; propriety’s equivalents are international standards and regulations; wisdom is the problem-solving dialogues; and trustworthiness is equated to international organizations that safeguard global integrity. The Confucian principle of harmony is congruent with the objective of the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind, of creating a world of harmony, peace and cooperation. The Golden Rule has been observed in the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind, through its insistence on reciprocal bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Mencius’ philosophical contribution to the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind is in his theory of human nature, where humaneness is seen as developmental—as would be the community built by the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind. Mencius’ principle of governance is congruent with the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind’s insistence on responsible governance. These congruences and similarities, between the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind and the philosophies of Confucius and Mencius, point to the foundations for the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind.

Abstract:
Since the early ages, mankind has always been in search of a comfortable, convenient, safe and pleasant environment to live. Mankind’s quite different endeavors and intellectual progresses throughout the historical process have been related to the reason and continuity of his existence. Man’s endeavor to leave various traces in the environments he has been and his creativity have been effective in the formation of cultures and civilizations. This also denotes art.All environments that harbor men stand for their environment. The house, neighborhood, district, village, city, country, office, outdoor or indoor spaces where he dwells are considered the basic constituents of the environment that encircle mankind. All of these constituents have always been interwoven and in contact with cultural textures, aesthetics and art.The fact that the origin of cultures are cities also makes one think about the fact that mankind lives in this environment formed together by such cultural accumulation and the nature. This is because cultures spring from cities, live in cities and spread their influence from one city to another. In this study, the environment where mankind lives is analyzed in terms of meeting aesthetical expectations. With this study conducted on the basis of literature, it is intended to call attention to the subject of designing environments suited to the aesthetical needs and expectations of mankind.
Keywords: Visual environment, audio environment, aesthetics.

Abstract:

“Money is controlled by a market; I trust the government has control. I do not think you are right, of course the government has the control and they would not do like this, it cannot be true that my savings is not real, I work hard for them! But just stop it I just do not want to make these kinds of questions to myself; I just need a house, go traveling and have some fun, I do not want to go around and worrying”.(Anonym comment)

This comment by a person with university degree in business and middle manager at one of the larger Swedish companies, when discussing the thesis you are about to read, without the person having reading it in advance, actually seems representative for the overall knowledge about what is really going on in the financial system today and the willingness of people question it. The knowledge you will obtain and the result you will experience after finished your reading is challenges of basic “taken for granted assumptions” of businessmen, academics or people in general within the society today, for the purpose of understanding the system and its role in society. You will experience a unique critical presentation of the financial system today, and also discover that this knowledge about the financial system is not a knowledge the majority should possess, even one of the important principles of the system might be just that the majority do not possess this knowledge.

The financial system, when the time of writing, suffer from large global problems. This thesis is examining the foundation of the system, such as the concept of money, and the forces and principles within the system. The research goes from how the system has developed historically to how it is constructed and maneuvered today. Money is described as trading tools which value is only an illusion of value for persons in the society. The financial system is further broken down into three different subsystems in order to understand the term financial system. From the perspective of the three subsystems the financial system is described as a deceiving system fooling the participants that they possess value in forms of bank notes and coins. Further the thesis shifts the focus to how the system looks today by categorizing actors and tools in the system, how state authorities is trying to maneuver the system and create a network model of the Swedish financial system, the conclusion became that no one can escape the system and do not have a chance not to enter the system, the chapter also reveals how no one really has the power to control and influence the system. Finally the thesis provides foundations for the reader to make his own opinion if the gambling within the system has been taken to long, if the financial system could be labeled as a pyramid scheme, if the system has provided more benefits than drawbacks to society and finally some speculation in consequences if the system would crash and speculation of how historians in the future would describe the present version of the financial system. But before starting reading, think about the message from the director Alan Alda:

“Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won’t come in”

(Citation: Alan Alda, Quoteland, n.d)

Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to explore to what extent, if any, has the principle of the common heritage of mankind been implemented in the practice of states and in what areas. With that objective in mind, various fields of international law are critically canvassed, including the Antarctic Treaty, the Outer Space Treaty and the U.N. Convention on the law of the Sea, plus such international organizations as the European Space Agency and INMARSAT, all with the view to finding the best model for the application of the principle of the Common Heritage of Mankind to Outer Space. The thesis recommends the establishment of a special outer space organization as the best way to satisfy the needs of the developing countries and their expectations.

Connor, A. "The spiritual brotherhood of mankind : religion in the novels of Hall Caine." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2017. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3009465/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sir Thomas Henry Hall Caine was a best-selling novelist active between 1885 and 1923. His novels were noted for their melodramatic plots, often involving love triangles, with affairs, adultery, extra-marital sex and infanticide. Several of his books sold more than a million copies, and most were adapted for the stage and screen, often by Caine himself, who was also a prolific dramatist. In addition, Caine worked as a journalist and enjoyed a brief political career. Despite his massive commercial success the novels are little read nowadays. Contemporary literary critics dismissed his plots as overly sensational and formulaic and there has been little subsequent in-depth commentary on his novels. However, Caine should not be disregarded as a purely commercial writer of limited ability. He was a deeply religious man with extensive scriptural knowledge, who frequently drew inspiration for his novels from the Bible and viewed fiction as a vehicle for moral and religious instruction. He also used the novels to express his personal beliefs and to engage in specific religious debates. Caine had family connections to the Isle of Man where he eventually settled permanently, and a highly significant archive of largely unexplored material is held at the Manx Museum. Investigation of this resource has enabled a detailed critical appraisal of Caine’s approach to religion in his novels. Each chapter of this thesis considers Caine’s relationship to either a Christian denomination or major religion. The first chapter examines Nonconformity as a powerful formative influence on Caine’s religiosity and on his view of fiction. In the second and third chapters, which deal with the Anglican Church and Roman Catholicism respectively, Caine confronts several religious issues of great interest to his contemporaries and with some relevance again in the twenty-first century. The final two chapters consider Caine’s belief in the fundamental unity of all religions by examining his relationship with the Jewish and Islamic faiths. Taken as a whole, this thesis reclaims Caine for a new readership and reminds us of the powerful role popular novels and drama once had in religious debate, and arguably still have. Caine is not always a likeable figure, certainly not a straightforward one, but he is a striking character and, as such, deserves the consideration offered throughout this work.

Penney, Jordan. "'The quiet of mankind' : authority, spirit, and enthusiasm in England, 1660-1714." Thesis, University of York, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1166/.

Full text
Abstract:
'Enthusiasm' was a term widely used in early modern England as a pejorative to designate individuals who believed themselves to have direct communication with God. For historians the term has typically been examined as currency in polemical clashes. But this study will approach the subject from a much wider angle by investigating the tensions, in religion and politics, that the controversy over enthusiasm actually signified. It will do so by applying a framework consisting of three parts - authority, spirit, enthusiasm - and suggest that, between 1660 and 1714, one part cannot be understood without reference to the other two. As a study of ideas traced in printed literature and manuscripts, it will proceed by elucidating the various conceptions of piety that were carefully devised to meet two purposes. One, satisfying the basic obligations of Christianity, which entailed some measure of personal engagement with the holy spirit without seeming to be enthusiastic; and two, satisfying the obligations of political and ecclesiastical authority. Whereas the Anglican 'testimony of spirit' attested to the imperceptible influence of the holy spirit on one's virtue and tranquillity of mind, more radical Protestants felt it sensibly on the body, or clearly upon the emotions or thoughts, where it might even dictate divine orders, literally and directly. This study will consequently demonstrate the complexities of inward piety and the role it played in arguments for and against English institutions, how these points are related, and how attitudes to each of these varied along political and religious lines. Additionally it will illustrate their relevance for understanding contemporary attitudes to ecclesiology, conscience, spiritual substance, rational religion, the self, the will, resistance, prophecy, millenarianism, and tradition.

Nelson, Jeffrey O. "A map of mankind : Edmund Burke's image of America in an enlightened Atlantic context." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30566.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis re-evaluates Edmund Burke’s (1730-1797) image of America by focusing on the place of colonial America in his early thought and pre-parliamentary writings. In so doing, it considers Burke’s relationship to the humanist tradition, offers an appraisal of Burke’s historicism, and seeks to describe the nature of his place within the Age of Enlightenment. Burke’s interest in the British North American colonies emerged well before his rise to prominence as a Member of Parliament in the mid-1760s. Behind Burke’s later partisan speeches was a capacious understanding of America as a European frontier with a colonial experience that also included the Spanish and the French, native inhabitants and imported slaves. His early writings are an important example of the manner in which eighteenth-century thinkers perceived that in heretofore unknown peoples and civilisations there existed an opportunity for historic comparison, as well as for working out the complex implications of particularity and universality. They suggest a way in which “the reception of America”, according to David Armitage, by figures like Burke can help us to see “what uses America had within earlier intellectual projects and to what extent America shaped their distinctive features”. This thesis is foremost an attempt to explore the ways in which America provided the young Burke with material that enlarged his mental horizons and fashioned his distinctive historical and political thought. Finally, the thesis seeks to make scholarly contributions to studies on the place of America in the European consciousness and to the concept of Atlantic History.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine J.G. Ballard’s The Drowned World to investigate how the relationship between humans and nature affects humanity, and whether humanity is indestructible. By performing an eco-critical reading of The Drowned World, the protagonist’s actions and choices on his journey are examined, as well as how they affect his partner, comrades and nature. In this process, the result was that a complete lack of conscious humanity is impossible as the basic human instincts linger. Furthermore, this essay provides didactical approaches to teaching this novel in an upper-secondary school classroom as well as insight into the many aspects of the novel, which are comparable to modern day society on terms of politics, globalism and environmentalism.

Abstract:
The issues of the relationship between the sexes have always worried mankind, but their relevance increases at crucial moments in history. The October Revolution of 1917 radically changed Russian society, changes affected all spheres of society, including personal relationships, the position of women and men has changed. The study analyzes gender relations in utopian projects of post-revolutionary Russia, during the construction of a new society. The purpose of this study is to analyze significant, from our point of view, utopian projects of this period. Philosophical and methodological analysis, a phenomenological approach, as well as a descriptive method were used to study the problem. The analysis of the problem revealed the main trends in utopian projects of the post-revolutionary period on the problem of gender, identified a variety of approaches to its solution and identified two main directions: the first direction is represented by the Marxist concept with its variations, the second direction followed the path of liberation of women and men, providing them with full equality and the realization of all opportunities.

Abstract:
Today, we are more likely to speak and write about the more progressive destruction of land biosphere as a result of irrational economic activities of mankind – the replacement of traditional natural ecosystems by anthropogenic systems (techno-, urban- and agro-systems), discuss the harmonization of the interaction of society and nature, talk about growing socio-political tension and instability on the planet. However, it is not just about understanding the effects of environmental civilization, but also awareness of the psychological and socioeconomic consequences of the brutal destruction of the biosphere, finding ways and means of solving the tasks associated with the ecological crisis, which has already entered the geopolitical level – during the last years there is carried out an intensive research on the effects of the crisis in the biosphere on the system of national interests and state security. The war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine is causing serious environmental damage to the Ukrainian state. Combat operations spoil the air, pollute water bodies, destroy forests and unique ecosystems, destroy crops and, in the long run, can cause colossal damage to the ecosystem of the whole Eastern Europe, and shorten the lives of Ukrainians. Key words: biosphere, ecosystem, evolution, ecology, civilization, the Russian-Ukrainian war, safety, problem, ecology.

Abstract:
This study traces the evolution of the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations on liberalising trade in Environmental Goods and Services (EGS). It explores the challenges and opportunities faced by Commonwealth small states and countries in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) in participating in EGS discussions. Small states and SSA countries have been primarily absent from the multilateral discussions on EGS for reasons that include insufficient trade-related interests in environmental goods. Notwithstanding, these countries should partake in these discussions especially amid the changing economic and trading landscape of the 21st century and concomitant changes in the environment. International trade is not as it was in 2001 when these negotiations began and likewise environmental concerns like climate change now pose an existential threat to mankind. The study begins by mapping the progression of the EGS negotiations at the WTO including attempts at establishing a plurilateral environment goods agreement. Thereafter, the paper analyses the trade-related interests of Commonwealth small states and SSA countries in EGS. The challenges and opportunities they face in participating in negotiations on liberalising trade in EGS are then highlighted. The paper concludes by identifying the priorities that these countries might consider should they decide to participate in the WTO EGS discussions.

Eshed, Yuval, and John Bowman. Harnessing Fine Scale Tuning of Endogenous Plant Regulatory Processes for Manipulation of Organ Growth. United States Department of Agriculture, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2005.7696519.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Background and objectives: Manipulation of plant organ growth is one of the primary reasons for the success of mankind allowing increasing amounts of food for human and livestock consumption. In contrast with the successful selection for desirable growth characteristics using plant breeding, transgenic manipulations with single genes has met limited success. While breeding is based on accumulation of many small alterations of growth, usually arise from slight changes in expression patterns, transgenic manipulations are primarily based on drastic, non-specific up-regulation or knock down of genes that can exert different effects during different stages of development. To successfully harness transgenic manipulation to attain desirable plant growth traits we require the tools to subtly regulate the temporal and spatial activity of plant growth genes. Polar morphology along the adaxial/abaxial axis characterizes lateral organs of all plants. Juxtaposition of two cell types along this axis is a prerequisite of laminar growth induction. In the study summarized here, we addressed the following questions: Can we identify and harness components of the organ polarity establishment pathway for prolonged growth? Can we identify specific regulatory sequences allowing spatial and temporal manipulation in various stages of organ development? Can we identify genes associated with YABBY-induced growth alterations? Major conclusions and implications: We showed that regulated expression, both spatially and temporally of either organ polarity factors such as the YABBY genes, or the organ maturation program such as the CIN-TCPs can stimulate substantial growth of leaves and floral organs. Promoters for such fine manipulation could be identified by comparison of non-coding sequences of KAN1, where a highly conserved domain was found within the second intron, or by examination of multiple 5” regions of genes showing transient expression along leaf ontogeny. These promoters illustrate the context dependent action of any gene we examined thus far, and facilitate fine tuning of the complex growth process. Implications, both scientific and agricultural. The present study was carried out on the model organism Arabidopsis, and the broad application of its findings were tested in the tomato crop. We learned that all central regulators of organ polarity are functionally conserved, probably in all flowering plants. Thus, with minor modifications, the rules and mechanisms outlined in this work are likely to be general.

Abstract:
To assess the impact of COVID-19 on local food systems and livelihoods, a total of 115 small-scale farming households (102 male- and 13 female headed) were interviewed from five communities (Lilanda, Luang (Mankanda), Masansa, Nshinso and Miloso (Tazara Corridor) surrounding the Mkushi Farm Block in the Central Province of Zambia between 30 September and 6 November 2020. The respondents were selected as a random sample, targeting 20-25 households per community or village. The small-scale farmers in these areas benefit from linkages with commercial farmers in the block.

Hillestad, Torgeir Martin. The Metapsychology of Evil: Main Theoretical Perspectives Causes, Consequences and Critique. University of Stavanger, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.31265/usps.224.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this text or dissertation is to throw some basic light on a fundamental problem concerning manhood, namely the question of evil, its main sources, dynamics and importance for human attitudes and behaviour. The perspective behind the analysis itself is that of psychology. Somebody, or many, may feel at bit nervous by the word “evil” itself. It may very well be seen as too connected to religion, myth and even superstition. Yet those who are motivated to lose oneself in the subject retain a deep interest in human destructiveness, malevolence and hate, significant themes pointing at threatening prospects for mankind. The text is organized or divided into four main ordinary chapters, the three first of them organized or divided into continuous and numbered sections. A crucial point or question is of cause how to define evil itself. It can of cause be done both intentional, instrumental and by consequence. Other theorists however have stated that the concept of evil exclusively rests on a myth originated in the Judean-Christian conception of Satan and ultimate evil. This last argument presupposes evil itself as non-existent in the real rational world. It seems however a fact that most people attach certain basic meaning to the concept, mainly that it represents ultimately bad and terrible actions and behaviour directed toward common people for the purpose of bringing upon them ultimate pain and suffer. However, there is no room for essentialism here, meaning that we simply can look “inside” some original matter to get to know what it “really” is. Rather, a phenomenon gets its identity from the constituted meaning operating within a certain human communities and contexts loaded with intentionality and inter-subjective meaning. As mentioned above, the concept of evil can be interpreted both instrumental and intentional, the first being the broadest of them. Here evil stands for behaviour and human deeds having terrifying or fatal consequences for subjects and people or in general, regardless of the intentions behind. The intentional interpretation however, links the concept to certain predispositions, characteristics and even strong motives in subjects, groups and sometimes political systems and nations. I will keep in mind and clear the way for both these perspectives for the discussion in prospect. This essay represents a psychological perspective on evil, but makes it clear that a more or less complete account of such a psychological view also should include a thorough understanding or integration of some basic social and even biological assumptions. However, I consider a social psychological position of significant importance, especially because in my opinion it represents some sort of coordination of knowledge and theoretical perspectives inherent in the subject or problem itself, the main task here being to integrate perspectives of a psychological as well as social and biological kind. Since humans are essential social creatures, the way itself to present knowledge concerning the human condition, must be social of some sort and kind, however not referring to some kind of reductionism where social models of explanation possess or holds monopoly. Social and social psychological perspectives itself represents parts of the whole matter regarding understanding and explanation of human evil. The fact that humans present, or has to represent themselves as humans among other humans, means that basically a social language is required both to explain and describe human manners and ways of being. This then truly represents its own way or, more correctly, level or standard of explanation, which makes social psychology some sort of significant, though not sufficient. More substantial, the vision itself of integrating different ontological and theoretical levels and objects of science for the purpose of manifesting or make real a full-fledged psychological perspective on evil, should be considered or characterized a meta-psychological perspective. The text is partially constructed as a review of existing theories and theorists concerning the matter of evil and logically associated themes such as violence, mass murder, genocide, antisocial behaviour in general, aggression, hate and cruelty. However, the demands of making a theoretical distinction between these themes, although connected, is stressed. Above all, an integral perspective combining different scientific disciplines is aimed at.
