Full textUppfattningarna om omvårdnad är relaterat till vem som utför den och vem som tar emot den. Det är därför viktigt att belysa både patienters och sjuksköterskors olika uppfattningar för att få en helhetsbild. Syftet med studien var att belysa genusperspektiv på sjuksköterskans arbete med patienter. Metoden som använts var litteraturstudie. I resultatet ingår elva granskade artiklar, tio kvalitativa och en kvantitativ. Resultatet redovisas i två delar situationsberoende både kvinnliga och manliga patienter är att vid intim omvårdad känns det bättre med en kvinnlig sjuksköterska än en manlig sjuksköterska. Det finns även kulturella skillnader i olika länder om hur patienten uppfattar omvårdanden och om det är en manlig eller kvinnlig sjuksköterska som utför den. Omvårdnadskvalité påverkas inte av åldern eller kön på sjuksköterskan, dock spelar dessa faktorer roll på hur patienter och sjuksköterskor uppfattar omvårdnaden. Patientens preferens spelar roll på hur denne kommer uppfatta omvårdnaden. Manliga och kvinnliga sjuksköterskors uppfattning om omvårdnad var att den intima omvårdnaden utförd av manliga sjuksköterskor uppfattades som obekväm jämfört med intim omvårdnad utförd av kvinnliga sjuksköterskor. Det är viktigt att ha vetskap om de här uppfattningarna för att kunna bemöta patienten på ett bra sätt som sjuksköterska.

Full textSyftet med litteraturstudien var att ur ett genusperspektiv undersöka manliga sjuksköterskors upplevelser av sin yrkesroll. Arbetet skulle belysa den manliga sjuksköteskans interaktion med såväl patienter som kollegor. Metoden var litteraturstudie. En artikelsökning i databaser samt manuell sökning genomfördes. Sökningen var avsedd att omfatta såväl nationella som internationella artiklar från 2000 och framåt. Resultatet visade att det manliga perspektivet inte betonades i omvårdnadsundervisning och klinisk omvårdnad. Detta upplevdes redan i utbildningen och skapade oro angående den framtida yrkesrollen. Yrkestiteln sjuksköterska upplevdes vara ett problem för den manliga sjuksköterskan. De senaste decennierna har allmänhetens attityd gentemot den manliga sjuksköterskan inte nämnvärt förändrats. Intimomvårdnad upplevdes vara den känsligaste delen av den manliga sjuksköterskans yrkesroll. Detta kan ligga till grund för att den manliga sjuksköterskan söker sig bort från det kroppsnära arbetet inom vården. För att förstå den manliga sjuksköterskans upplevelser av sin yrkesroll så behövs ytterligare kvalitativ forskning på området. Sjuksköterskeprogrammets undervisning behöver anpassas mer för män och för att den manliga sjuksköterskan ska kunna utvecklas inom professionen behöver den allmänna attityden gentemot den manliga sjuksköterskan förändras.

Full textThrough their day to day work nurses meet people in need of care. Their tasks can vary between dressing wounds to administering a KAD. The tasks are all performed according to a specified manual and they are carried out in the same way for all patients. But are all patients the same and are all nurses the same? Only approximately 10 percent of the nurses in Sweden are men. The aim of this study was therefore to view the perceptions and experiences in the meeting between the male nurse and patient in intimate care situations. The questions at issue were defined to examine the male nurses’ perception of the meeting with the patient and also to examine the patients’ perception of the male nurse in intimate care situations. A literature review was carried out. The result showed a clear preference among female patients for a female nurse in intimate care situations. Male patients preferred a male nurse but there was also a significant amount of male patients that preferred a female nurse in intimate care situations. The review further revealed perceptions of the male nurse as gay and ideas about the male nurse making sexual advances that influenced the patients’ and the male nurses’ perception of the meeting.

Full textBackground: Previous research shows that female patients may feel uncomfortable when nursing is performed by male nurses. Probable explanations for this are the male nurse's special position as a minority in health care. Furthermore, the role of caring for and nurturing has not always been an attribute commonly ascribed to men. Purpose: Therefore, this study aims to identify how male nurses and nursing students experience the practice of nursing measures when the patient is a woman. Method: The present study has been designed as a literature review based on 11 articles with a qualitative approach that were analyzed based on the method of metasynthesis. Result: During the analysis, four themes could be identified: "Intimate care", "Touch", "Religious and cultural barriers", "Strategies". Conclusion: The mapping shows that male nurses encounter problems due to their gender. Problems that in turn cause anxiety and stress in different nursing situations which can have a direct impact on the care they provide to patients of the opposite sex. Furthermore, it can affect which specialization the male nurse chooses after completing the education.

Full textBackground: Violence against women is a social problem that is described as a globalpublic health problem. The last 10 years the number of complaints regarding violence againstwomen in Sweden has increased by 30 percent. Violence against women includes physical,psychological and sexual violence. The violence has consequences for the woman who isexposed and it also means large costs for the society. Violence against women by current orformer male partner is often more violent and repeated to a greater degree than violence bywomen or in same-sex relationships. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses' experience of the encounter with thewoman who has been subjected to violence by current or former male partners. Method: This literature review was made in accordance with Friberg's method. The basis ofthe result was 11 scientific studies that highlight nurses' experience of the encounter with thewoman who has been subjected to violence by current or former partners. The studiesretrieved from PubMed and CINAHL complete. The studies were analyzed and resulted inthemes and subthemes. Results: The literature review resulted in four themes: Emotional meetings, Nurse's role,Factors that affecting the care and Organization. Subthemes to Emotional meetings: Nursesemotions and Strategies to manage the emotions. Subthemes to Nurse's role: Psychosocialcare and Medical care. Subthemes to Factors that affecting the care: Time access andworkload, Nurse´s attitude, Willingness to ask about violence. Subthemes to Organization:Guidelines, Education and Cooperation. Discussion: The result has been discussed in relation to Katie Eriksson caritative theorythat aims to relieve suffering. It has also been compared to the Swedish Work Environmentand the World Health Organization recommendations. Furthermore, the result of nurse'sexperience has been discussed in relation to studies that highlight abused women's experienceof the encounter with the nurse.

Full textEn intervjustudie har genomförts på en palliativ avdelning på ett sjukhus i södra Stockholm och bygger på sex semistrukturerade kvalitativa intervjuer med manliga sjuksköterskor. Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur manliga sjuksköterskor upplever sitt arbete, manligt och kvinnligt på arbetsplatsen och hur de upplever att omgivningen ser på deras yrkesval, i detta fall på en palliativ avdelning. Under studiens gång fann jag det svårt att hitta forskning om genus i palliativ vård, varken svensk eller utländsk forskning verkar ha uppmärksammat detta område.
Teorier och tidigare forskning om genus, manliga sjuksköterskor och genus i yrken har legat som grund och diskuteras tillsammans med resultatet.
Tidigare forskning visar att manliga sjuksköterskor ofta hamnar inom vården av en slump eller brist på andra arbeten. De dras till delar av vården där det händer mycket och är "actionfyllt" såsom ambulansen och akutvården. Det sker en uppdelning i arbetssysslor mellan de manliga och kvinnliga sjuksköterskorna där kvinnorna står för omvårdnad och männen för den tekniska kunskapen. Resultatet av min studie visar att intervjupersonerna aktivt valt sitt yrke och hade inget intresse att studera vidare till t.ex. läkare. Den avdelning som undersöktes upplevde sig själva jämställda i sitt arbetssätt där både män och kvinnor utförde både omvårdande och tekniskt inriktade arbetsuppgifter. Respondenterna tyckte att sjuksköterskeyrket var perfekt då det innehöll både ansvar och mycket patientkontakt och denna studie visar att de manliga sjuksköterskorna tvärtemot aktivt sökt sig till omsorgsvård på grund av att de vill arbeta mer långsiktigt och vårdande med patienterna. Relationer mellan patienter, anhöriga och kollegor stod i fokus. I studien uppkommer det att det finns inslag i deras arbetsbeskrivning som de anser vara positivt i bemärkelse att det är självständigt arbete såsom t.ex. hemsjukvård. Vidare upplever respondenterna att omgivningen tycker det är naturligt att de arbetar som sjuksköterskor och att det snarare är inriktningen på vården som är svår för omgivningen att prata om. Respondenterna känner sig trygga i sin egen manlighet och i sin yrkesroll och har inga problem att titulera sig som sjuksköterskor.

Full textThe purpose of this qualitative interview study was to examine the work situation of today for theswedish male nurses, with a focus on touch and strategies for intimate care work. Nine male nurseson staff at a University Hospital in Uppsala, were interviewed.The informants said they all felt well recieved among their female colleagues and that they feltcomfortable in their workplaces. The fact that they were men in a female-dominated profession didnot affect them in any significant way, either behaviorally or in how they were treated. Theinformants saw all duties as a natural part of the role, a role they all felt safe in. To explain thepurpose of intimate procedures and how they were implemented and to, in potentially problematiccases, ask if the patient would rather have a female nurse were the single most common strategies.Sensitivity to patient preference and mood were also seen as important.This study provides a very positive image of nursing as open-minded and equally, where thedifferences between the sexes is an asset rather than a burden. Having nurses of both sexes wasconsidered by the informants as something that strengthened the patient's autonomy and wellbeing.However, the nurse's sex is not an issue in most cases, and the differences are of minor importancefor professional practice.

Full textMän är en minoritet i sjuksköterskeyrket. Att som man arbeta inom vården leder till komplexa situationer. Manliga sjuksköterskor beskriver att de känner sig utanför, har svårt att tänka sig att åldras i yrket och känner att deras sexualitet ifrågasätts. Studiens syfte var att beskriva manliga sjuksköterskor och sjuksköterskestudenters upplevelser av att vara man i vården. Metoden som användes var litteraturstudie. I resultatet ingår tio granskade artiklar, en kvantitativ och nio kvalitativa. Resultatet redovisas i sju teman: upplevelser av att lära sig bli sjuksköterska, att möta allmänhetens reaktioner, upplevelser av krav på att vårda ”såsom kvinnor gör”, ensam man i kvinnornas värld, ”män för med sig manlighet till vården”, sexualisering av manliga sjuksköterskor och deras beröring, ”män knuffas framåt av sina kvinnliga kollegor”. Männen upplevde att utbildningen inte förberedde dem för problem kring könsroller. Misstron mot manliga sjuksköterskor upplevdes som frustrerade. Att vara annorlunda ger männen mer uppmärksamhet, något som upplevs både som positivt och negativt. Bilden av män som starka och tekniskt kunniga påverkar deras arbetsuppgifter. Beröring är laddat och undviks eftersom det skulle kunna leda till anklagelser om övergrepp. Manliga sjuksköterskor upplever att de inte förväntas arbeta kvar som sjuksköterskor, utan uppmuntras av kollegor att gå vidare till ledarskapsställning.

Full textBackground Preconceptions against health care workers is a phenomenon in health care, especially against male nurses, who are a minority within the nursing profession. Previous research has focused on specific problematic situations that arise in the profession for male nurses, society's view of male nurses and the fact that male nurses are privileged in the workgroup. Literature often mentions various preconceptions about male nurses, despite the lack of research focusing on male nurses' own experiences of prejudice against them. Purpose The purpose of this study is to shed light on the preconceptions that male nurses are experiences towards themselves. Method Literature review in the form of a descriptive meta-synthesis. Results Male nurses experience several preconceptions which are presented in four key concepts: "not accepted as nurses", "muscles, lift assistance and technical skills", "are assumed to be gay" and "are assumed to have sexual intentions towards patients". Conclusion Experienced preconceptions can affect male nurses' view of themselves and the professional role, meeting the patient and nursing care. These preconceptions can create conflicts and grievances in the workplace which can disrupt the nurse-patient relationship. Clinical Significance By shedding light on the preconceptions that male nurses are experiencing measures can be taken to reduce the ones that affect nursing work negatively.

Full textLack of touch can lead to illness. Physical touch between staff and patient may be a prerequisite for a professional and optimal care. An in- depth in the subject from a nursing- and gender perspective can help to improve the care of the patient. Touch can often be culturally determined by the rules. These rules may differ considerably in different groups of people. Who is allowed to touch whom, where on the body touch may occur can be both regulated and taboo. This C- essay is a literature study designed to shed light on male and female nurses experiences when they psychical touch patients in health care. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach. Eight scientific articles that illustrate male and female nurses experiences when they touch patients in care were analyzed using content analysis. In the analysis of the study was the VIPS- model four key concepts used: Well-being, Integrity, Prevention and Security to represent the analyzed articles content. In the result of this study it appears that both men and women felt that touch can be an expression of caring and well-being. No significant difference was found between men and women in their perceptions of the importance of integrity in relation to touch. Men developed strategies as a preventive measure to protect themselves against false accusations in relation to touch. Women felt that the knowledge of touch are formed in the family. Male nurses felt unsafe compared with female nurses who felt confident when they touched patients. From the result of this study can conclusion be drawn that there is a difference between male and female nurses experience when they touch patients.

Bakgrund: Män har arbetat med omvårdnadsrelaterade uppgifter sedan lång tid tillbaka, i mitten på 1800-talet blev uppgifterna en profession. År 1957 blev sjuksköterskan legitimerad, samma år fick män söka utbildningen utan dispens.
Syfte: Att belysa den manliga sjuksköterskans genusrelaterade problem i förhållande till patienter och kollegor.
Metod: Litteraturöversikten baserades på åtta artiklar, som analyserades med innehållsanalys efter granskning av vetenskaplig kvalité.
Resultat: Manliga sjuksköterskor upplever att problem kan uppstå i samband med områdena kommunikation och intim omvårdnad.
Diskussion: Då manliga sjuksköterskor befinner sig i en värld där kvinnliga normer sedan lång tid råder är det av stor vikt att kommunikation sker på ett sådant sätt att alla berörda förstår vad som har sagts. Manliga sjuksköterskor upplevde rädsla för att bli anklagade för otillbörliga handlingar i samband med intim omvårdnad, vilket har resulterat olika strategier för att lösa detta.
Slutsats: Den manliga sjuksköterskan möts av en värld där kvinnliga normer råder. Utifrån antagandet att män och kvinnor handlar och tänker olika i skilda situationer är det av stor vikt att både manliga och kvinnliga sjuksköterskor är medvetna om detta för att inte patient- och personalsäkerheten skall äventyras.

To obtain answers, questions about nursing as meaning and how they experienced the process of growing in their role, were asked. The study has a qualitative research approach and was carried out through interviews with four male, professional nurses on fulltime-care-wards. After analysing the material the results were presented in three themes: The essence of nursing, The process of growing in the role as a nurse and finally, Gender. Nursing was seen upon, as a collection of all tasks that nurses have. They had all noticed that they had grown in their role. They had not experienced any differences in male versus female nurses in the essence of nursing. They thought it was individual, but that there could be a difference.

Full textBackground: Nightingale’s idea of caring as a call for women is a milestone in the nursing profession. Men had before Nightingale had a significant role in caring but today male nurses only represent approximately 10 percent of registered nurses in Sweden. Eriksson describes in her theory that fundamentally man is a caregiver and the importance of a caring relationship. However there are experiences among patients that male nurses are not suitable for caring and that they prefer care from a female nurse. Connells theory about masculinity as connected to the male body generates an image of the man as strong, insensitive and aggressive. Aim: To describe male nurses’ experiences of caring. Method: A descriptive literature review drawn from 10 qualitative research articles. Results: Three themes emerged through the analysis; Attitude of caring, touching and intimate care and masculinity and caring. Male nurses often had to develop special strategies for example in establishing a caring relationship. The caring relationship and caring could be difficult for male nurses and the importance of being adaptable was therefore emphasized. Touching was described as delicate and many described the importance of being careful to avoid misunderstandings. Conclusion: Male nurses need to be careful and able to adapt both in caring for male and female patients. Male nurses have to think before they take action to a greater extent than female nurses.

Full textEn mängd forskning har gjorts kring kvinnors hinder att nå chefspositioner och vilka fördomar kvinnliga chefer möter. Många studier visar att fördomar bottnar i bristande överensstämmelse mellan den kvinnliga könsrollen och ledarskapsrollen. Syftet med studien (n = 683) var att undersöka attityder till ledarskap och jämföra hur män och kvinnor inom två könssegregerade yrkesgrupper, sjuksköterskor och poliser, attribuerar manliga respektive kvinnliga egenskaper till ledaregenskaper. Hypoteserna baserades bland annat
på social identitetsteori. Resultatet visade att bägge yrkesgrupper förknippade framgångsrikt ledarskap med både kvinnliga och manliga egenskaper. Dock var sjuksköterskors skattning av kvinnliga egenskaper kontra ledaregenskaper högre än deras skattning av manliga egenskaper i förhållande till ledaregenskaper. Signifikant högre grad av fördomsbenägenhet gentemot kvinnliga ledare kunde påvisas bland poliserna.
It has been shown that barriers and prejudice’s impede women’s progress to managerial levels. Studies show that prejudice’s derives from perceived sextyping of the managerial role. The aim of the present (n = 683) study was to examine attitudes towards leadership and compare how men and women within two gender segregated occupational groups, nurses and polices, attributes male and female characteristics to successful management. The hypotheses were based on social identity theory. Results revealed that both occupational groups associate successful management with both male and female characteristics. However, nurses’ valuation of female characteristics counter managerial characteristics was higher than their valuation of male characteristics versus managerial characteristics. A significant higher level of prejudice towards female leaders was found among polices.

The aim of this study is to examine whether there are gender related circumstances that effects male patients experience of care. Theoretical framework for the study is Madeleine Leiningers Transcultural nursing and foremost her sunrise model that inspired the authors both regarding the manufacturing of the questionnaire, analyses and interpretation of the material. The method is an empirical study that handles sixteen questioner answers from an oncholgical clinic in Skåne. Despite reduction and a small population some nuances and spectra about male patients experience of care, have been able to descry. The result answers however doubtfully if gender related relations between female nurse and male patient exists. Several ideas have on the other hand emerged in this study that entice to further research.

Full textSyftet med studien var att undersöka sjuksköterskors upplevelser av vilken betydelse genus har i skapandet av en yrkesidentitet. Ett så kallat snöbollsurval användes för att hitta lämpliga informanter. Intervjuer genomfördes på fyra manliga och fyra kvinnliga sjuksköterskor. Vid analysen framkom sex kategorier, Yrkesvalet, Avsaknad av manliga förebilder, Yrkestitel, Heteronormativa ideal, Synen på manliga sjuksköterskors inträde i yrket samt Innebörden av omvårdnad. Resultatet visade att idealbilden av en sjuksköterska fortfarande ses som en vårdande, moderlig och omhändertagande kvinna, vilket sågs som den gemensamma förklaringen till varför fler kvinnor än män väljer att utbilda sig till sjuksköterskor. Detta medför att manliga sjuksköterskor har färre förebilder inom yrket och därmed andra förutsättningar att forma en yrkesidentitet. Informanterna upplevde skillnader i förväntningar på kvinnliga respektive manliga sjuksköterskor samt olika föreställningar om hur en sjuksköterska ska vara beroende på kön. I fråga om status och lön delade informanterna åsikten om att fler män inom yrket skulle vara gynnande.
The aim of this study was to explore nurse’s experiences on what significance gender has in creating a professional identity. Snowball sampling was used to find appropriate informants. Interviews were executed on four male and four female nurses. From the analysis six categories emerged, Choice of profession, Lack of male role models, Working title, Heteronormativity as an ideal, the View on male nurse’s entry into the profession and the Meaning of nursing care. The result demonstrated that the ideal of a nurse is still perceived as a caring, maternal and tending woman. This was seen as the common explanation to why there are more women then men who choose to study to become a nurse. This results in male nurses having fewer role models within the profession thus different conditions when it comes to forming a professional identity. The informants experienced differences in expectations on female and male nurses and also different ides on what a nurse should be like depending on gender. In the matter of status and reward there was an agreement among the informants that more men within the profession would be beneficial.

Full textBackground: After Florence Nightingale established the modern nursing profession as a female occupation, men disappeared from nursing until the middle 20th century. The foundation for caring science is the Caritas motive, intra-human love, which can be displayed through grooming, playing and teaching. There are deeply rooted norms in society controlling what is masculine and what is feminine. These norms complicate the roles for men in female dominated professions, e.g. males within nursing. Aim: To enlighten how male nurses identify themselves within their professional roles through a gender perspective. Method: The method used is a literature overview on 11 qualitative and peer reviewed articles, published within the last 13 years. Two frames were applied to identify common findings. Results: Men choose nursing because they wanted to help others and obtain a stable career. The participants reported that caring for others was a part of being a decent human being. It was also reported that male nurses have a fear of being accused of inappropriate touching from both male and female patients. Study participants were more restrictive in their touch than their female colleagues. They reported feeling unwanted because of their physical gender and that they did more physically demanding labor than their colleagues. Conclusion and clinical impact: Male nurses do identify themselves as nurses, but patients and colleagues do not always agree. This study illuminates some flaws during nursing education and encourages change in stereotyping men within the nursing profession.

Six interviews were carried out, two in each of the above mentioned specialities. The findings indicated specific factors of choice. Full textGender roles in society influence the choices of men and women regarding working area in healthcare. According to statistics from the Health and Human Services Department of Sweden, (Socialstyrelsen) men tend to mainly specialize in emergency care and psychiatry, while some other specialization areas have a shortage of men. Patients who wish to be tended to by a male nurse can not get this fulfilled everywhere. The aim of this study was to describe why male nurses most commonly choose to work in psychiatric wards and emergency rooms. The method, which has been used, is a qualitative interview study using a descriptive design, which later was analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The informants were chosen using purpose selection and consisted of four nurses within the field of psychiatry, and an additional four that worked in emergency rooms, distributed on one hospital in northern Sweden, and one in the central part of the country. In the result the reasons for the choice regarding work place of the male nurses were that at the emergency rooms and psychiatric wards, the possibility of making a difference for the patient and also having time for him/her was great, which made the nurses feel that they could be of good use for the patient, and also felt needed. In the work place it was considered that the nurses had good potential for professional development. The working environment was perceived as satisfactory in relation to independence, variation and working place. The participants considered that their field of work offered an interesting work place and providing enjoyable work tasks. The conclusion drawn in this study, showed that among male nurses within the fields of psychiatry and emergency care, found an attraction to their work because the work is perceived as interesting, independent, varying, providing good opportunities for further professional development, and where the nurse gets to feel as if he is doing a good job. The nurses had a negatory conception regarding somatic care, since they thought that it did not meet these important key factors.

Full textBackground: Nursing has traditionally been predominantly staffed by women and the work title itself has had a female connotation. When men to a larger degree enter nursing, new situations arise which didn’t before when the patients only had female staff to take into consideration. Aim: To investigate and describe the experience of nurses who are male in their care and treatment of women patients in intimate care situations in a hospital setting, as we as the emotional experience of the women clients of having been cared for by nurses who are male. Method: The study was carried out as a literature review through searches in databases containing nursing sciences. Both qualitative and quantitative review templates were used to carry out the quality review. A proven method for content analysis was used to find common themes in the articles, which eventually formed the basis for the result. Result: The study found that male nurses often were afraid of being accused of improprieties by the female patients. In order to avoid misunderstandings, male nurses used different strategies in order to be able to perform intimate care. Conversations of an intimate nature were seen as an equally sensitive matter to the male nurses. From a patient perspective it was discovered that younger female patients preferred to be cared for by nurses of the same gender, while older female patients did not specify the same preference. Intimate touch was something that could evoke strong feelings in the female patient.
