Abstract:
The publication of the diaries of Thomas Mann has led to increased scholarly interest in this writer as a private man. The writer's son, Klaus, has also attracted increasing attention in recent years. Much of this attention has emanated from biased standpoints, however, such as psychological, gay studies or political. This study is the first examination dedicated to the literary relationship between father and son. It seeks to maintain an unbiased view, concentrating on the writings and avoiding unfounded speculation. Chapter 1 provides an in-depth examination of existing studies, setting this thesis in its context. Chapter 2 then undertakes to analyse the early writings of Klaus, in comparison with writings by Thomas, demonstrating the existence of a dialogue-inliterature in these writings. The third chapter provides a detailed comparison of the diaries of father and son. Chapter 4 conducts an examination of the political undertakings and stance of both figures, and questions some of the standard conclusions, for example regarding the political development of Klaus. Fresh findings are imparted, for example on the Decision affair. Chapter 5 examines later writings, focusing primarily on Klaus' Alexander (1929), and demonstrating the continuity of themes in the author's writings. A hitherto unexplored source for one of Thomas' literary figures is also considered. The final chapter compares Thomas' Doktor Faustus with his son's earlier Mephisto and other writings, with ground-breaking results. This chapter also demonstrates that important sources for Thomas' novel have not been acknowledged. The idea of a father exerting an influence on the writings and approach of his son is not a surprising one. A less expected outcome of such an examination is that of the influence of a son on the approach and writings of his father. Given the status of Thomas Mann, in contrast to that of his son, such an outcome would be even more unexpected. This examination has, nevertheless, dared to pose the question as to whether such an influence could be possible. It is hoped that the results of this examination will constitute a significant advancement on previous scholarship of these two writers.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is the study of the innermost personality of Klaus Mann and of the relation which exists in him between the writer and the man. After reading the novel "Symphonie pathétique" according to our method, which bases on the psychocritique and the psychoanalytical theory, we have carried out our investigation of Klaus Mann’s works, searching for the constituent parts of his "private myth". Klaus Mann’s heroes are neurotic homosexuals who look for an identification in creation or political action and a personal justification in religion. This search for identification is seldom successful and we notice regressive behaviours, and even suicides. The confrontation with the author’s biography and the study of relationships between the members of the family, clearly shows a non-resolution of the Oedipus conflict, the impressions of which are to be found in all the works of the author. As a conclusion, we draw a psychological portrait of Klaus Mann, which results from our study of the novels, autobiographies, letters and diaries of the author and the contributions of the family psychonanalysis

Abstract:
This study developed from an initial interest in the literature of the German exiles in which canon Klaus Mann's work between 1933 and 1945 figured prominently. This in turn evoked a curiosity toward this still relatively unknown son of Thomas Mann, intensified not least by the pathos of a life characterised by early promise, fame and prominence that ended in obscurity, despair and suicide. Yet these aspects of Klaus Mann's life appeared to have been overlooked by British scholars and with them the early and later years of Mann's career. The years of Mann's exile have been well documented and researched and place Mann's fiction of this time within the canon of Exilliteratur. Those texts which went before, however, have received only scant attention. Yet it is precisely in the novels and essays from the Weimar Republic that Mann developed and refined the techniques and themes that would define his later works. To overlook them is to suggest that the decisive moment of exile represented a caesura in Mann's career, thus masking the underlying continuity within Mann's oeuvre. For this reason, this study concentrates primarily on the early years of Mann's career, on the period from 1924 to 1933, to illustrate the progression and development within his work that would culminate in the novels of his exile. While Mann's prose dictates the approach I have taken, this is not exclusively 'literary' to the exclusion of all other concerns and potential external influences on his work. It assesses the complementary characteristics of Mann's fiction and his essayistic prose, much of which has only become readily available in the last five years, against the context of their creation during the Weimar Republic. In consequence, this work embraces the cultural, political and social context of this age, embracing its contradictory nature where progression and experimentation battled against the endemic regression and reaction of the Republic's institutions. However, it does not intend to provide a detailed discussion of the complexities that underlie this period of German history. For this I refer the reader to the body of research which deals specifically with this topic.

Fournier, Mat. Paris 8, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA084149.

Full text
Abstract:
This work questions notions of identity and subjectivity while building on Deleuzian geophilosophy, queer theory, and transgender studies. Gender, I argue, is an assemblage, that is, a stable yet contingent construction, built of heterogeneous elements. Queer, then, means the disruption of those assemblages, not in the form of stable identities, but obliquely, as « lines of flight », diagonals or points where the assemblage gets ruptured. While queer temporality has been, in the past years, explored by a wide range of scholarly works, I focus here on spatiality. Questions of border zones and orientation (as conceptualized by Sara Ahmed), as well as Deleuzian concepts such as thresholds of transition, planes of consistencies, or milieus and cartography, are particularly relevant to queer critique. To explore this geophilosophy of gender, I look mainly into the works of three authors writing in the heavily polarized political background of the thirties, with Europe, and particularly Berlin, as the center of gravity of a shifting world. Klaus Mann (1906-1949), Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942), and Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986), share the particularity of being uncloseted gays, which, according to Sedgwick's Epistemology of the Closet, places them in an atypical enunciative situation amongst Modernists. Their writing seems most of the time to operate in an undefined and fluid space between fiction and autobiography, as if their problematic condition of speech prevented them from adhering to any specific genre. Because they didn’t belong to the gender assemblages of their time, they created their own spaces, navigating across not only gender assemblages, but also escaping their social class or their citizenship

Arnold, Hannah. ""A minor Atlantic Goethe" : W.H. Auden's Germanic bias." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:061fdedc-d1f0-4cb0-a4a1-59b4b27d7ef3.

Abstract:
This thesis is an account of the poet and critic W.H. Auden's relations with Germany and Germans over the course of his life (1907-1973), presented through a selection of influences that have received little critical attention in the corpus of secondary literature to date. While these connections and influences are manifold and sometimes disparate, they can serve as a prism to tell Auden's life-story from a particular, relatively unexplored angle and to illuminate his work. The thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter One discusses Auden’s engagement with German literature before 1928, his reasons for spending nine months in Weimar Berlin 1928-29, and the formative influence of this experience on his life and work. Chapter Two explores Auden's relationship with his 'in-laws', the famous family of Nobel Prize winning author Thomas Mann, and Auden's choice of an international life-style. Chapter Three discusses various other, later German influences on Auden: his visit to Germany with the US Army and its traces in The Age of Anxiety; issues concerning the German translation of this text; his Ford Foundation residence in isolated West Berlin; and his intellectual friendship with Hannah Arendt. Introduction and Conclusion embed these three specific chapters, deliberating the topic more abstractly. A number of appendices bring together a wide range of unpublished sources – and their translations into English, if the original is composed in German. Translations of all German appendix material can be found in the appendix itself.

Paris 3, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999PA030044.

Abstract:
The german intellectuals who emigrated after 1933 have published many texts in which they comment upon the attitude of those intellectuals who stayed in germany. In these texts, they try at first to impse the gesture of breaking off with them as a norm, as the gesture one has to make in order to belong to the community of the emigres. They turn to a more psitive vision as they try to build a volksfront, in which the intellectuals in germany are supposed to play a role too. It is under the influence of the communists , who in their strategy of unificating the antifascists plead for a reconciliation, that the emigres use less the excluding text model. Some emigres, like heinrich mann and thomas mann, who have never uttered any univocal exclusion, serve as models. The reintegration of the intellectuals who stayed in germany in the community of the "real" intellectuals and of the opponents of nazism takes place in the context of the discussion about the "other germany"; at this point they are considered no more as "renegades" but as members of the "inner emigration", which allows the emigres to refutate the thesis of an identity between hitler and germany. These texts show that the emigration has her own discurse, which is internal and strongly ideological ; they also show the limits of the politisation of the noncommunist emigres, whose discurse keeps within the cultural field. The excluding and normative character of these texts show the influence of the nazi discurse, as the emigres, on judging upon the intellectuals in germany, use the same categories as the nazis, but invert them. There seems to be a contamination, mainly in the form of the discurse. Between the "counter-discurse" of the emigres and the discurse they oppose to

Inksetter, Hamish. "Perceptions of Evil: A Comparison of Moral Perspectives in Nazi Propaganda and Anti-Nazi Literature." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31917.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how the concept of evil was understood by opposing German perspectives during the era of National Socialist rule (1933-1945). The rise of Nazism in Germany marked a period of massive political upheaval wherein the National Socialist government encouraged the masses to view the world in terms of a great struggle between forces of good and evil. This was the central theme of their propaganda, which zealously encouraged racialist beliefs in the popular consciousness, and was based on assumptions of German superiority and Jewish evil. Despite Hitler's apparent success in creating an obedient nation, a significant number of Germans opposed his rule, amongst whom a small group of writers expressed their discontent through creative fiction. Through a comparison of the worldviews communicated through political propaganda and anti-Nazi literature, it is revealed that the crux of the divide between their opposing perspectives hinged on the meaning of evil. Since evil is a concept with many meanings, this thesis approaches the subject thematically. The comparison begins by focusing on the perception of evil as an all-corrupting force that had taken hold of Germany, followed by an exploration of how power and brutality were understood, ending with a comparison of views on how the struggle between good and evil took place on both a social and individual level. In addition to demonstrating the subjectivity of moral perspective during a tumultuous period of the recent past, this research reveals how the struggle against Nazism existed as a conflict of ideas. Moreover, the comparison of cultural sources (including Nazi art, visual propaganda, written texts such as Mein Kampf, and anti-Nazi creative fiction) demonstrates the value of art as a tool for conducting historical enquiry. Since the legacy of the Third Reich continues to directly influence modern perceptions of evil, exploring how evil was understood according to contemporary Germans – from both pro and anti-Nazi perspectives – is of particular historical interest.

Javůrková, Lenka. "Srovnání dvou českých překladů románu Mephisto od Klause Manna." Master's thesis, 2018. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-388768.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on comparing two Czech translations of Klaus Mann's novel Mephisto. The first translation was issued in 1937, the second translation in 1962 and later re-issued in 1984, 1986, 2000, 2004 a 2008. After an introduction summarizing the author's life and the novel's troubled fate after World War II, the focus shifts to the selected Czech translation and their background. The attention is paid to their respective translators and first publishing houses. Subsequently, the translations are subjected to a descriptive analysis. Inspired by Katharina Reiß, we include both extra- and intra-linguistic phenomena, also using categories first introduced by Czechoslovak translation scholars Jiří Levý and Anton Popovič. The approaches of both Mephisto translators are not only compared, but also contextualized within the translation methods framework and its development in Czechoslovakia, especially the so-called Otokar Fischer's school. After presenting a selection of translation scholars' views on ageing translations, we debate if the analyzed translations are obsolete or not. Lastly, we take into account possible other (extra-linguistic/pragmatic) reasons for the publishing disproportion between the selected translations. Key words: Klaus Mann, Mephisto, comparing translations, translation...
