Abstract:
The novel Mephisto by Klaus Mann published in 1936 has more often than not been interpreted as a roman à clef. This paper examines the reasons why the novel was interpreted as such by looking at the relationship between Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens on whose life the characterisation of the protagonist of the novel, Hendrik Höfgen, was based. The interpretation of the novel as a roman à clef had consequences for its publication record in Germany. Furthermore this paper critically assesses how and why critics reacted to the novel in a seemingly biased manner and what effect the reception of the novel had on Klaus Mann. In tracing these questions the main themes of the novel are discussed and compared to the film version by István Szabó of 1981. In outlining and evaluating the controversy surrounding Mann’s novel, the final section of the paper examines the reasons why the “Mephisto”-theme was met with such interest and enthusiasm in West Germany in the early 1980s.

Abstract:
Klaus Mann, the eldest son of Thomas Mann, was among the first emigrants to leave Germany after the Nazi takeover in 1933. From the vantage point of his early exile in Amsterdam, he looked back disapprovingly at German artists and intellectuals who appeared to thrive under Hitler's regime. Especially galling to him was the success of actor/director Gustaf Gründgens (1899–1963), his former brother-in-law:I visualize my ex-brother-in-law as the traitor par excellence, the macabre embodiment of corruption and cynicism. So intense was the facination of his shameful glory that I decided to portray Mephisto-Gründgens in a satirical novel. I thought it pertinent, indeed, necessary to expose and analyse the abject type of the treacherous intellectual who prostitutes his talent for the sake of some tawdry fame and transitory wealth.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Socrates, Oscar Wilde, Klaus Mann and many other men in history had one thing in common: they loved men. Some of them were lucky and could live a peaceful life regardless, since they either had the respective social standing or lived in societies where homosexuality was at least tolerated. Most others in history, however, were in a rather unfortunate position. To be gay was to be criminal. A conviction for homosexual conduct resulted in years in prison or worse: even today the death penalty can be imposed upon homosexuals in countries where the Shari'a, the Islamic Criminal Code, is interpreted and applied in a strict and conservative way.

Abstract:
This article explores the literature and film produced by the writers and filmmakers sent by the British and Americans to occupied Germany in the four years after the war. Although these figures were intended to help transform the mentality of the Germans, it is argued here that they had less effect on Germany than Germany had on them, and that the crucial (albeit unwitting) result of their visits to Germany was the creation of a genre of art here named ‘outsider rubble literature’ or Fremdentrümmerliteratur. This is a genre that asked, ultimately, what right the Allies had to judge Germany from outside when they were guilty too. It comprises a series of fundamentally ambivalent works of art that often manifest their ambivalence by juxtaposing the two forms of destruction experienced in Germany: the destruction of the bombed cities and the destruction wrought in the concentration camps. The article suggests that this genre of ‘outsider rubble literature’ includes Thomas Mann's great postwar novel Doktor Faustus, arguing that our understanding of this novel is increased if we read it alongside the postwar writing of Stephen Spender, Martha Gellhorn and Klaus Mann, and the postwar filmmaking of Billy Wilder.

Abstract:
Mann K, Rendl J, Busley R, Sailer B, Seybold S, Hoermann R, Sauerbruch T, Börner W. Systemic iodine absorption during endoscopic application of radiographic contrast agents for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography. Eur J Endocrinol 1994;130:498–501. ISSN 0804–4643 Hyperthyroidism induced by contrast agents is a major problem in patients with pre-existing thyroid disease, particularly in patients with functional thyroid autonomy. The present study was undertaken to evaluate whether contrast media applied during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP) may result in a significant increase of serum iodine levels and thus may be associated with the risk of iodine-induced hyperthyroidism. The courses of serum concentrations of total iodine and free iodide, as well as of urinary iodine excretion, were measured in 15 patients before and up to 21 days after ERCP. During ERCP, the non-ionic contrast medium iopamidol was instilled in amounts resulting in a total iodine load of 57.4 ± 22.8 mmol (7.3 ± 2.9 g). In all patients, ERCP resulted in a highly significant increase in serum levels of total iodine from 0.8±0.5 to 85.2 ± 116.9 μmol/l 4 h after application of the contrast agent. In parallel, serum iodide levels were raised from 0.06 ± 0.04 to 5.42 ± 6.09 μmol/l and urinary iodine excretion from 71.1 ± 35.7 μmol/mol creatinine to 621 620.9 ± 636 492.2 μmol/mol creatinine. Peak concentrations of serum iodine are well related to the total amount of iodine applied (p < 0.05). During follow-up, iodine levels returned to preexposure levels within 2–3 weeks. Levels of thyrotropin, free thyroxine, and free triiodothyronine remained unchanged during the follow-up period. In conclusion, endoscopic application of iodinated contrast agents during ERCP leads to significant increases of serum levels of total iodine and free iodide and of urinary iodine excretion. Therefore, patients with underlying thyroid disease may be at risk to develop iodine-induced hyperthyroidism. Klaus Mann, Dept. of Internal Medicine II. 1964, 1968, 1973, 1983, 1993, 1995: This essay examines key moments in the formation of Klaus Holzkamp's critical take on social science and psychology. The main target of Holzkamp's work is to craft concepts which enable an immanent interrogation of relations of power and social control sustained through the operations of social science and psychology. Understanding power and control as an immanent question means dealing with power and control as a practical question: critical social science draws its sole justification from its capacity to alter social science and the related social and political fields.

Abstract:
Abstract ‘To live a double life’ The academic life of Paul Fredericq around 1900 In this article I analyse the diary of the historian Paul Fredericq following the concept of ‘academic life’, a term coined by Johan Huizinga and further explored by Klaas van Berkel. It calls for the study of the university that goes beyond the institutional, perceiving the university as a living community with multiple interactions with society. Personal documents such as the diary of Fredericq prove to be excellent sources to this informal, anthropological view on the university. The diary reveals how the ‘personal’ life and the ‘university’ life of Fredericq intertwined and how his research and teaching was mixed up with engagements in the Flemish Movement, liberal politics and cultural world. In his diary he spoke about a double life, namely this combination of being a scientist and being a public figure. To conclude, this article discusses Fredericq as a case of the responses and concerns of universities around 1900 to the growing extra-curricular activities of the academic community.

Abstract:
Klaus Mollenhauer (1928–1998) is one of the most important German theorists of education in the postwar era. Mollenhauer is often remembered in Germany today for his first book titled Education and Emancipation: Polemical Sketches, but he received international renown for his final monograph, Forgotten Connections: On Culture and Upbringing. Although Mollenhauer characterized Forgotten Connections as actually working to move towards a more “substantial conception of emancipation,” many of his followers and colleagues such as Kaufmann et al. saw it as nothing less than an act of “infidelity to those who had taken on his emancipatory pedagogy” ( Kaufmann et al., 1991 : 86). In the light of these differences in emphasis and interpretation, this paper provides an overview of Forgotten Connections that (following Wivestad and Saevi) sees it as presenting six main questions and themes—ranging from “Why do we have children” to “How can we respect and draw out a child’s inherent character?” However, in doing so, this paper simultaneously traces Mollenhauer’s own efforts to develop a more substantial concept of personal and political emancipation in this text.

Abstract:
Apocalyptic studies flourished in the 1970s and early 1980s. This interest probably had something to do with the social and political upheavals of the 1960s and their effects, but I won't go into that issue today. In 1970, Klaus Koch's bookRatlos vor der Apokalyptikwas published in Germany. In 1972 it appeared in English under a title more friendly to scholars:The Rediscovery of Apocalyptic. The subtitle, however, preserved the edginess of the original:A Polemical Work on a Neglected Area of Biblical Studies and Its Damaging Effects on Theology and Philosophy.1My favorite chapter is the one entitled “The Agonized Attempt to Save Jesus from Apocalyptic.” The main title of the English version, as well as the title of the chapter I just mentioned, unfortunately converted a respectable German noun into the substantive use of an adjective with a vague referent.

Bourke, Richard. "What is conservatism? History, ideology and party." European Journal of Political Theory 17, no. 4 (July 3, 2018): 449–75. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/1474885118782384.

Abstract:
Is there a political philosophy of conservatism? A history of the phenomenon written along sceptical lines casts doubt on the existence of a transhistorical doctrine, or even an enduring conservative outlook. The main typologies of conservatism uniformly trace its origins to opposition to the French Revolution. Accordingly, Edmund Burke is standardly singled out as the ‘father’ of this style of politics. Yet Burke was de facto an opposition Whig who devoted his career to assorted programmes of reform. In restoring Burke to his original milieu, the argument presented here takes issue with 20th-century accounts of conservative ideology developed by such figures as Karl Mannheim, Klaus Epstein and Samuel Huntington. It argues that the idea of a conservative tradition is best seen as a belated construction, and that the notion of a univocal philosophy of conservatism is basically misconceived.
