Abstract:
A recent re-evaluation of the Noronhia species from the Guineo-Congolian forests resulted in a much more restricted circumscription of N. mannii. A part of the specimens excluded from N. mannii represents the two new species described here. Both new species, N. silvatica from Liberia, Ivory Coast and Ghana, and N. cameroonensis from Cameroon, have red fruits, while N. mannii has dark purplish fruits. Both new species are small trees or shrubs found in the undergrowth of evergreen forest.

Abstract:
Cephalotaxus mannii Hook.f. is one of 15 species of conifer in the Central Highlands. Cephalotaxus mannii is a scarce medicinal conifer endemic to the south central region of China and Vietnam. In Vietnam, although widely distributed species (Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Thua Thien Hue, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Lam Dong...) but is considered rare and vulnerable by the indiscriminately exploitation of people. In this study, 18 SSR markers were used to analyze the genetic diversity of 34 individuals C. mannii collected in Ta Nung and Hiep An of Lam Dong province. The results showed 12/18 polymorphic markers. Among 36 DNA amplified fragments, 24 were polymorphic (66.66%). Genetic diversity in Hiep An population (h = 0.269; I = 0.449 and PPB = 72.22%) was higher than that of Ta Nung (h = 0.433; I = 0.264 and PPB = 66.67%). The total level of molecular variance (AMOVA) among populations was 27.74% and among individuals within the populations was 72.26%. The average of gene flow value (Nm) of the species C. mannii populations was 3,310. Both Ta Nung and Hiep An populations had Wright’s inbreeding coefficient Fis <0 (- 0.244, - 0.052, respectively) and the private allele (Ap) (0.222, 0.333, respectively). A dendrogram constructed based on similarity matrix of 34 C. mannii samples divided into two main groups with their genetic similarity coefficient ranged from 65% (Cpm31 and Cpm32) to 100% (Cpm16 and Cpm17, Cpm21 and Cpm22). Molecular analysis results showed that C. mannii species should be protected at the population level.

Abstract:
A comparative foliar anatomical study of the invasive and non-invasive species of Dracaena in Obafemi Awolowo University Campus in Nigeria was carried out. A specific aim of the study was to determine the foliar and morphological traits in Dracaena mannii, which may be responsible for its invasive habit. The foliar anatomical traits were also used to describe the two studied Dracaena species. Fresh and matured leaves of D. mannii and D. arborea were collected and authenticated at the Herbarium of Obafemi Awolowo University (IFE). Quantitative and qualitative data were recorded for morphological traits, whereas scraping techniques were used to obtain the epidermal peels and photomicrographs of slides were taken for observing the anatomical traits. The presence of club-like glandular unicellular trichomes and papillose, high stomata index and frequency of epidermal cells per unit area strengthen the invasive habit of Dracaena mannii. The thin walls of the epidermal cells increase the intercellular flow of assimilates within D. mannii, which is also a notable invasive character.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe fruit of six species of Diospyros (Ebenaceae) provide food for eight species of diurnal primates in the Lopé Reserve, Gabon. Both succulent flesh and immature seeds are eaten but patterns of consumption vary among the primate species. Interactions between D. mannii, which has very large fruit (9 cm × 7 cm) and seeds (5 cm × 2 cm), and primates were observed in detail. D. mannii fruit are unusual, being covered by a dense mat of irritant hairs that are largely retained, but become looser on ripening, when fruit are abscissed. Primates do not eat immature seeds of this species but do predate on seeds of some other Diospyros species. Ripe flesh (and ripe seeds) of D. mannii are eaten by gorillas and chimpanzees but not by monkeys. Comparison of fruit characters and of feeding patterns of primates for the six Diospyros species suggests that large seeds are potentially vulnerable to high levels of predation but the presence of irritant hairs provides protection during fruit development. Abscission of ripe fruit (shown only by D. mannii) appears to afford additional protection from predation on ripe seeds by arboreal monkeys. These observations underline the complexity of plant-animal interactions in tropical forests and suggest that some fruit characters have evolved to reduce seed loss during maturation.

Abstract:
In this study, the radical scavenging capacity of Guiera senegalensis, Ipomoea asarifolia and Anisopus mannii were compared. The ascorbic acid equivalent of the stem bark (2.1 mM), leaves (2.05 mM) and root barks (1.89 mM) of Guiera senegalesis are much higher than any part of Ipomoea asarifolia or Anisopus manii. The stem bark, leaves and root bark of Guiera Senegalensis had IC50 of 15.4, 20.0 and 17.0 µL respectively, while corresponding parts of Ipomoea asarifolia showed IC50 of 50, 42 and 65 µL, respectively. These results suggest that Guiera senegalensis and Ipomoea asarifolia possess significant antioxidant capacities to warrant further detailed studies on the role of this property in their therapeutic effects.

Abstract:
Dendrobium mannii and Dendrobium mirbelianum were rare and endangered orchid species. In vitro micro propagation could be used to conserve and proliferate these species. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of chitosan on proliferation of the protocorm-like-bodies (PLBs) of in vitro grown Dendrobium mannii and D. mirbelianum. Chitosan has been reported as an important component to promote orchid growth in vitro. In this study chitosan was included in the in-vitro media at the concentrations of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mg.L-1. The highest PLBs formation, clump diameter, and fresh weight on D. mannii were obtained from explants cultured on medium supplemented with 1 mg.L-1 chitosan. After 14 weeks of culture, fresh weight, clump diameter and average number of PLBs of D.mannii were 29.52 %, 33.00 % and 35.88% greater at chitosan (1 mg.L-1) compared to control media. D. mirbelianum treated with low chitosan concentrations (1 and 2 mg.L-1) had 65.71% more leaves than those without chitosan treatment. Chitosan, however, had an adverse effects on growth of both species at 4 mg.L-1. Medium contain 4 mg.L-1 chitosan induced PLBs proliferation of D.mannii, but inhibited PLBs proliferation of D.mirbelianum. These results suggested that chitosan had important roles in PLB proliferation and could be used for the propagation of D. mannii PLBs in vitro. Keywords: rare orchid species, in-vitro

The typification and taxonomy of Cephalotaxus mannii and C. griffithii are discussed. Based on the study of their morphological characters, taxonomic literature and specimens in different herbaria, we consider both the taxa as separate species not as synonyms of each other or of C. harringtonii. A key to all the species of Cephalotaxus is also provided for easy identification. During the study, it is found that, the name C. mannii was erroneous lectotypified. The errors are rectified by selecting proper lectotype.

Abstract:
Anonidium mannii is a plant of the Annonaceae genus which is used traditionally in Africa for the treatment of gonorrhoea, malaria, cancer, skin inflammation and dysentery. In this study we will evaluate antimalarial, antifungal, anti - tuberculosis, antibacterial activities and cytotoxicity of different fractions in order to provide a scientific rationale for the traditional use of Anonidium mannii as well as provide possible novel drugs in the treatment of multi drug resistant strains of parasites and bacteria. Extracts from dried leaves were obtained by using solvent extraction and different fractions obtained using column chromatography eluted with solvents of varying polarities to obtain a wide range of metabolites. The antimalarial activity of the various fractions and some pure compounds was evaluated using plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH) assay. Cytotoxicity was evaluated using HeLa cells while anti – tuberculosis assay was evaluated using the green fluorescent protein. Antibacterial activity of the extracts was evaluated using micro-dilution assay against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis) bacteria and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi) bacteria. Antifungal activity was evaluated against Candida albicans. The antimalarial assays yielded some fractions with promising IC50 values. The selected fractions yielded activities ranging between 0.73 μg/mL and 20.23 μg/mL. The fraction with the best activity was obtained from a hexane/ethyl acetate fraction. AM1C, a cholestane, showed the best activity from the pure metabolites that were screened. AM3C, stigmasterol, a pure compound gave the best antifungal activity with an MIC of 0.063 μg/mL. AM9C another pure compound (sterol) showed the best activity against S. typhi with a value of 0.031 μg/mL. AM2C a pure compound showed an activity of 0.063 μg/mL against E. faecalis. The best cytotoxicity was demonstrated by the fraction C2AM3P with a cell viability of 7.1 ± 0.2 % while AM1C had a viability of 20.2 ± 1.2 %. Several pure metabolites were isolated and four of these were positively identified as steroids. Of these steroids the structure of three novel metabolites from A. mannii was deduced. The study showed promising antibacterial, antifungal, anti – tuberculosis, antimalarial and anticancer activity of A. mannii. These results validate the use of A. manni against cancer, skin inflammation which is caused by fungus, malaria and bacterial diseases.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present report is based on the traineeship developed in the Hospital Veterinário do Restelo for six-month, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Luís Martins and co-supervision of Dr. Miguel Ramos. The report is divided in two parts. The first part consists of the statistical analysis of the clinical case series followed during the traineeship, and the second part is composed by a bibliographic review of the gallbladder mucocele condition, with the presentation of thirteen case reports. The gallbladder mucocele gained clinical relevance within the biliary diseases, possibly due to the rising number of diagnosed endocrine disorders, predisposing to hepatobilliary modifications responsible for the emergence of this pathology. It may assume diferente clinical presentations, varying from the absence of clinical signs to vomiting, acute abdomen, lethargy, anorexia, polyuria, polydipsia and jaundice. As mucocele may lead to gallbladder rupture, despite the possible medical approach it should be objecto of a resolutive surgical approach.

Abstract:
