Abstract:
Multi-robot path planning faces challenges such as conflict avoidance, collaboration, and dynamic environments. This paper proposes a multi-robot path planning algorithm that integrates the improved nutcracker optimization algorithm with the improved dynamic window approach. To address the nutcracker algorithm’s sensitivity to initial conditions and slow convergence, a population initialization strategy is introduced for more diverse initial populations. Additionally, a simplified path node strategy is also designed to shorten paths and reduce steering times. By incorporating a dynamic inertia weight factor , the balance between global exploration and local optimization is improved. To address the limitations of the dynamic window approach, which is unable to avoid dynamic obstacles instantly and is prone to falling into local optimal solutions, the target distance subfunction, the path evaluation subfunction and the deviation from danger zone subfunction are added to the evaluation function. Finally, the two algorithms were fused together and we conducted four experiments to validate the performance of the MANOA, IDWA, and MANOA-IDWA algorithms, as well as the application of MANOA-IDWA in multi-robot path planning. Results show that MANOA-IDWA significantly increases path planning success rates in dynamic environments, producing shorter and smoother paths, thus enhancing the safety and stability of multi-robot operations.

Abstract:
The Kaua‘i species Schiedea kauaiensis H. St. John was previously characterized by a geographical range including a number of Napali Coast valleys and the Limahuli, Wainiha, and Manoa valleys in the northern part of the island whereas the closely related S. perlmanii W. L. Wagner & Weller occurs in the Anahola area and on Ha‘upu on the windward (eastern) side of Kaua‘i. The primary characteristic distinguishing them is a subshrub habit for S. kauaiensis vs a vining habit in S. perlmanii. In several localities from northern Kaua‘i including Limahuli, Wainiha, and Manoa valleys, populations were known only from herbarium specimens but were included within S. kauaiensis in part because these localities were closest to the Napali Coast valleys, which encompasses the remainder of the range of the species. Recent field work resulting in discovery of new populations and cultivation of plants from Limahuli and Manoa has shown that plants from these three northern localities do not represent S. kauaiensis but rather fit with S. perlmanii. Two of the collections from this northern area are the types of S. wichmanii H. St. John and S. kauaiensis. Since these names were published earlier, we must adopt here the earliest name, S. kauaiensis, for the plants formerly known as S. perlmanii leaving the species from the Napali Coast valleys without a name and described here as a new species, S. napaliensis W. L. Wagner & Weller.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Milton’s worldly, prosaic Manoa has won few admirers, and the ransom plot in Samson Agonistes often elicits puzzlement. This article situates Manoa in relation to the soteriological anxieties that Milton’s tragedy explores. Drawing on Freud’s psychoanalytic account of monotheism, this article suggests that Manoa’s presence clarifies the paternal substitution realized in Samson’s elevation by God, but also threatens to unsettle it. Whereas Yahweh chooses Samson, Manoa’s love is fundamentally choiceless—an expression of an absolute bond. Reading Samson against two other Judges tragedies—Buchanan’s and Vondel’s plays about Jephthah’s sacrifice—the article argues that Milton’s dramatic poem reveals both the allure of chosenness and its psychological impasses. Manoa’s unconditional love offers a release from the drama of election. But Samson’s tragedy is that he can only reject it: to accept a love that demands nothing, that needs no choice, would mean giving up his most cherished wish—the wish to be chosen.

Abstract:
Es disposa d’un primer article: Failure of de-activation in the medial frontal còrtex in mania: evidence for default mode network Dysfunction in the disorder. Bipolar disorder has been associated with brain changes during the performance of functional neuroimaging, especially a reduction in activity or hypoactivation in prefrontal cortex and other cortical regions, and an increase in activity in subcortical structures such as amygdala, hippocampus and ganglia from the base. In a first study, functional alterations were examined during carrying out a working memory task, in patients with maniac episode versus healthy controls. For this, 29 patients who met DSM-IV criteria of type I bipolar disorder were recruited, with a score of the Young Mania Rating Scale ≥18, matched with 46 healthy controls by age, sex and intellectual coefficient. All of them were performed functional RMN with the N-Back paradigm. Abstract:
The globalization process has been providing new arrangements to identity issues on its role as a model to interpret the relations between the global and the local in current times. From this prospect, this project’s purpose approaches the construction of the rap made in Brazil as an artistic project of resistance to an hierarchical power and prestige system as well as a musical component integrated to the global flux of products, ideas and styles, therefore, as a cultural and marketable language. The project’s challenge is to study the dissemination of Brazilian National Rap in its variety of meanings: its social impact as lyrical politics about social interaction and day by day relations as a means of cultural context as a merchandise. This project’s goal is an effort to rebuild the symbolic system of meanings which is passed on by this message to the specific public, young consumers of this artistic and musical type, in São Paulo city, who are denomined and use to call themselves ‘manos’ and ‘boys’, trying to highlight the uniqueness behind this process. This project helps to set up supporting ideas towards a renovation of social issues as well as a reevaluation of current ideas on Brazilian youth.<br>Em tempos atuais o processo de globalização vem fornecendo novas configurações identitárias levando como modelo de análise na interpretação das relações entre o global/local.

Master of Science<br>Department of Computer Science<br>Mitchell L. Neilsen<br>Mobile technology has advanced significantly in the last decade, devices have gotten smaller and much more powerful. Because mobile devices are so accessible, they have spread everywhere and are used extensively by an immense portion of the population for various tasks. Mobile devices are no longer a means to just communicate with another person, you can use them to take pictures, scan documents, create a Wi-Fi hotspot, or just be entertained. E-Readers have been around for a while and implemented as a source of entertainment on many mobile platforms. However very few e-readers for Manga, which is a type of comic book, have been developed. Manga Feed, built on the Android platform, strives to help fill this void by providing a clean and simple to user interface for users to enjoy reading on the go. There are thousands of manga of various genres made available to users, offering entertainment to any individual interested in manga.

Abstract:
Abstract:
The aim of this Master’s thesis is to examine seven public librarians’ attitudes towards manga as a new kind of literature in public libraries. Manga is an art form, originally from Japan, but in recent years manga has become very popular in the Western societies. The main issue of this thesis is how the librarians’ look at manga and what they think about manga. In this thesis I also discuss to what extension the public libraries in this study have manga in their collections, what the librarians think that public libraries today should offer their visitors and what is important to discuss when the librarians purchase books and other new media to the library. In order to answer these questions I conducted interviews with seven public librarians in children and youth departments in five public libraries in the north of Sweden. This study shows that the librarians are positive in their attitudes towards manga. Their opinion is that the public libraries could offer manga, but they think that quality is very important and they will be sure about the top-quality in the manga they offer. The librarians’ main opinion is that their lack of knowledge in manga is a problem. In this thesis I use Herbert J. Gans theory about taste cultures and taste publics and my conclusion is that there is a relation between the librarians’ knowledge and to which taste culture they belong.<br>Uppsatsnivå: D

Niehusmann, Silke. "Manga - lost in translation? : a study of American and German manga localisation." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2009. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28767/.

Full text
Abstract:
While it has been argued in the past that organisational (re-)production of (foreign) media texts leads to a loss of creative value and that the translation robs the originals of their artistic status, this thesis argues that media are socially constructed entities that carry a multitude of voices encoded in their content and format. It thus does not focus on translation of a media text, in which a translator, re-writer and editors are involved, in terms of a textual comparison but as a practice carried out as integral part of the process of production. So are a multitude of other internal (marketing, public relations and sales) and external (laws, audiences, business environment) factors and voices. The thesis thus employes notions of polysemy to reflect on the different aspects encoded within the medium due the different approaches and interest the various areas of localisation are bound by. It thus breaks down the workflow into three different localisation stages: divided stages, during which specialists focus on singular aspects of production; the recreation of context, both in terms of the physical medium itself and the placement of it in a larger meta text; and finally the active framing and placing of the product in the local marketplace. At the end this internal focus is juxtaposed with those of external stakeholders. This approach will be framed by using organisational localisation of manga in Germany and the USA as an examplar. Following a print medium through production allows the steps to become visible since every step is accompanied by a tangible object reflecting said stage.

Paveley, Fiona. "Mania, meaning and gender : an exploratory study to investigate women's experiences of mania." Thesis, University of East London, 2006. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3829/.

Full text
Abstract:
Research suggests that there may be gender differences in the form and course of bipolar disorder (manic depression). Much research exists that explores the relationship between gender and depression in women. The aim of this study, therefore, was to explore women's subjective experiences of mania and to examine how conceptions of gender may have shaped those experiences. This study also considered the extent to which women's experiences of mania (and depression) accord with the concept of bipolar disorder. This study was concerned with the meaning of the women's experiences within the context of their social, economic and relational lives. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore seven women's accounts of mania (and depression) which were then analysed from a Critical Realist standpoint using a qualitative approach, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Despite moments of creativity and apparent empowerment, mania emerged as a complex and often frightening phenomenon. Six themes were identified. These were concerned with: autonomy and loss of control; maintaining a coherent sense of self; 'paranoia'; a need for explanations; loss; and contradictory responses to depression. It was notable, however, that no theme was identified which was explicitly concerned with gender. Traditional categorical diagnostic approaches failed adequately to describe the women's actual experiences. It is suggested their accounts of mania (and depression) might be better accommodated within a psychological understanding of mental distress that considers the meaning and function of unusual experiences and beliefs. The clinical and theoretical implications of these findings are discussed and further areas for research outlined.

Rishworth, Barbara. "Mania, meaning and gender : an exploratory study to investigate men's experiences of mania." Thesis, University of East London, 2009. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3737/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is apparent from the literature that the accounts and descriptions of 'bipolar disorder' fail to capture the difficulties described by those who experience manic depression. The gender differences in diagnosis, the accounts and experience of manic depression (and specifically mania), have not been sufficiently explored. Furthermore, the majority of the research has been quantitative, and research that has looked at the "personal knowledge" (Peyrot, McMurry & Hedges, 1987) of individuals experiencing manic depression has been sparse. Paveley (2006) considered women's experiences within the context of their social, economic and relational lives. Paveley identified six themes: a) autonomy and the loss of control; b) maintaining a coherent sense of self; c)'paranoia'; d) a need for explanations; e) loss; and f) contradictory responses to depression. The aim of this study therefore was to explore men's experiences of mania (and depression) and to examine how conceptions of gender may have influenced those experiences within the context of their social, economic and relational lives. This study also reflected the extent to which men's experiences of mania accord with the concept of bipolar disorder. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore six men's accounts of mania (and depression) which were then analysed from a critical realist position using a qualitative approach, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Mania emerged as a complex phenomenon with related benefits and difficulties. Five themes were identified: a) Sexuality, Maleness, Femaleness and Mania; b) How I experience, relate to and value mania; c) relationships and mania; d) identity, self and where am T in the experience and e) search for explanations; "Why me? Why now? One theme was explicitly concerned with gender and how gender mediates and is impacted by mania. There was a compelling difference between the men's explicitly gendered accounts and the 'absence' of explicit gender reference in the women's accounts in Paveley's (2006) research. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed and further areas for research outlined.

Abstract:
This study is performed as an Archive, Library and museum master’s thesis in two years studies. The overall aim is to investigate and analyze what the term Manga means in a library and information science context. The concept of Manga has different meanings depending on whether we start from a Japanese or a Swedish context. Manga is integrated in the Japanese society while Manga often is associated with youth culture or a separate genre in Sweden. The first issue is to examine how the Manga literature lending statistics looks in Swedish public libraries in the years 2000-2011, which is illustrated through text and graphics. A dramatic increase in Manga literature lending statistics occurred 2004 which culminated in the year of 2009. From this statistics the study also investigates which genres are represented in the Swedish public libraries. This diversity of genres and subgenres in Manga literature is sharply reduced to a few genres in Swedish public libraries where romance, comedy, action, fantasy and adventure are dominant. The second question dealt with how to define and use the term Manga? I suggest that Manga can be sorted into the concepts of Manga Literature, Manga aesthetics and Manga culture with the intention of nuance and specify the subject areas content and discussion. The third issue in this examination is dealing with how Manga literature can conveniently be placed? What are the contextual components in Manga and how do they relate to each other?

Abstract:
Wave energy conversion as a means for small scale energy production is approaching commercial viability. This paper presents the undergoing development of a wave energy conversion device at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The device is a three part point absorber with two buoys, one floating and absorbing incoming waves; the other maintaining tension on the third mechanism, the submerged power-take-off unit. This design is discussed as three concept configurations for WEC construction. The analytical solution is developed, and the buoys response is computed due to a selected and analyzed sea-state.

Among the many challenges presented by COVID-19, requirements for sheltering-in-place and social distancing continue to prompt new approaches to community engagement. In the summer of 2020, the University of Hawai’i Community Design Center (UHCDC) conducted two community engagement exercises for two very different projects. The first engaged the University of Hawai’i at Manoa community around the re-envisioning of Varney Circle, a historic campus focal point. The second engaged the rural Wahiawā Town community around the redevelopment of the Wahiawā Civic Center. Both engagement processes reached out to communities of approximately 20,000 people, however, the contrast in constituencies and contexts for engagement shaped distinct approaches and takeaways.

Abstract:
In 2016, the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Architecture established the University of Hawaii Community Design Center (UHCDC), working in close collaboration with a state legislator to meet the needs of the state government. This unique governmental alignment introduced a novel form of community design that opened up new academic and extramural space for the school and university, taking the form of a top-down public sector practice as distinct from its more common, bottom-up public interest alternative. This paper presents the results of three years of continuous dialogue with the state legislature and over $2 million in contracts with state agencies, by reflecting on the transformative effects of public sector practice on design pedagogy. This reflection follows three case study courses: an undergraduate basic design studio; an undergraduate concentration design studio; and an advanced professional practice course, all required within Hawaii’s undergraduate and graduate curricula. Each case study lists learning, teaching, and long term benefits that flowed from each public sector partnership, focusing on the potential of this model to strengthen and enrich professional education. The evolution of these courses maps the transition from working on projects to working on systems, also a move toward applying equitable academic and design rigor to marginalized project typologies—e.g. utility buildings, infrastructure, renovation, and repair and maintenance. In addition, UHCDC’s contract work represents an expanded field of practice, including social science research, service and strategy design, community engagement, information design, engineering, and development studies, demonstrating the broader disciplinary demands of the public sector. More importantly, the significant dividends from this three year-old public sector practice identifies an opportunity area for architectural education and practice—design in government.

Abstract:
