Mentre les alteracions cerebrals funcionals en el trastorn bipolar han estat àmpliament estudiades, els canvis que tenen lloc en les diferents fases de la malaltia i la recuperació estan menys documentats. El trastorn bipolar s’ha associat amb canvis cerebrals durant la realització de neuroimatge funcional, sobretot una reducció en l’activitat o hipoactivació en el còrtex prefrontal i d’altres regions corticals, i un augment d’activitat en estructures subcorticals com l’amígdala, hipocamp i ganglis de la base. Més recentment s’ha descobert que, a més d’aquesta sèrie de fallades a l’hora d’activar determinades regions, hi ha també un fracàs a desactivar l’àrea prefrontal medial, específicament en el node anterior de l’anomenada xarxa neuronal per defecte ( “default mode network” , DMN). En un primer estudi es van examinar les alteracions funcionals durant la realització d’una tasca de memòria de treball, en pacients amb episodi maníac versus controls sans. Per a això es van reclutar 29 pacients que complien criteris DSM-IV de trastorn bipolar tipus I, amb una puntuació de la Young Mania Rating Scale ≥18, aparellats amb 46 controls sans per edat, sexe i coeficient intel·lectual. A tots ells se’ls va realitzar RMN funcional amb el paradigma N-Back. El trastorno bipolar se ha asociado con cambios cerebrales durante la realización de neuroimagen funcional, sobre todo una reducción en la actividad o hipoactivación en el córtex prefrontal y de otras regiones corticales, y un aumento de actividad en estructuras subcorticales como la amígdala, hipocampo y ganglios de la base. With the presentation of the doctoral thesis per compendium of these 2 publications, the initial study is complemented with a longitudinal study that allows to compare functional alterations in different phases of the disease (episode of mania and remission). The globalization process has been providing new arrangements to identity issues on its role as a model to interpret the relations between the global and the local in current times. From this prospect, this project’s purpose approaches the construction of the rap made in Brazil as an artistic project of resistance to an hierarchical power and prestige system as well as a musical component integrated to the global flux of products, ideas and styles, therefore, as a cultural and marketable language. The project’s challenge is to study the dissemination of Brazilian National Rap in its variety of meanings: its social impact as lyrical politics about social interaction and day by day relations as a means of cultural context as a merchandise. This project’s goal is an effort to rebuild the symbolic system of meanings which is passed on by this message to the specific public, young consumers of this artistic and musical type, in São Paulo city, who are denomined and use to call themselves ‘manos’ and ‘boys’, trying to highlight the uniqueness behind this process. This project helps to set up supporting ideas towards a renovation of social issues as well as a reevaluation of current ideas on Brazilian youth.<br>Em tempos atuais o processo de globalização vem fornecendo novas configurações identitárias levando como modelo de análise na interpretação das relações entre o global/local. Partindo deste pressuposto, o objetivo desse projeto situa-se em abordar a construção do rap produzido no Brasil enquanto projeto artístico de resistência ao sistema hierárquico de poder e prestígio, como componente musical integrado no fluxo global de produtos, idéias, estilos, ou seja, enquanto linguagem cultural e consumível. Trata-se precisamente de estudar a disseminação do Rap Nacional (seu impacto social, no papel da política lírica de um discurso politizado em torno da interação social e da organização do cotidiano) enquanto meio de produção cultural, objeto de consumo imerso no contexto da cultura hip-hop. Diante disso, fica proposto para a presente pesquisa reconstruir o sistema de significações simbólicas que a mensagem produz, caracterizando pela capacidade de reflexão crítica à ordem social, articulada pelos jovens consumidores desse gênero artístico musical, na cidade de São Paulo, que são denominados por “manos” e por “boys”, tentando apanhar a singularidade que há por trás desse processo. O presente trabalho ajuda a estabelecer pontos de apoio para a renovação tanto das questões sociais numa reavaliação da visão conformista e atomizada, idéias correntes quando o assunto é juventude brasileira.

Because mobile devices are so accessible, they have spread everywhere and are used extensively by an immense portion of the population for various tasks. Mobile devices are no longer a means to just communicate with another person, you can use them to take pictures, scan documents, create a Wi-Fi hotspot, or just be entertained. E-Readers have been around for a while and implemented as a source of entertainment on many mobile platforms. However very few e-readers for Manga, which is a type of comic book, have been developed. Manga Feed, built on the Android platform, strives to help fill this void by providing a clean and simple to user interface for users to enjoy reading on the go. There are thousands of manga of various genres made available to users, offering entertainment to any individual interested in manga.

La higiene hospitalaria es uno de los aspectos fundamentales, en el control de infecciones. El medio ambiente hospitalario cumple un rol importante, en la trasmisión de enfermedades y se ha podido relacionar, en algunas oportunidades, como causa directa de infecciones en los pacientes y ha sido responsable de grandes brotes epidémicos. Las infecciones nosocomiales (IN) ocasionan en el mundo 1.400 muertos cada día y constituyen las complicaciones intrahospitalarias más frecuentes. Las manos de los trabajadores del equipo de salud son un vehículo muy importante para la trasmisión de microorganismos multi resistente y de infecciones hospitalarias. Las IN de pacientes causadas por las manos contaminadas del personal de la salud es una de las formas de diseminación de los agentes infecciosos más comunes. La higiene de las manos del personal en los centros de salud, es el procedimiento aséptico más importante en la prevención y control de enfermedades infecciosas. Es por eso que se debe considerar que todo lo que rodea al paciente debe gozar de una exhaustiva higiene para prevenir infecciones como principio fundamental. Ricerca delle origini del manga e delle sue influenze occidentali. Il manga inteso come arte contemporanea/ pop giapponese e i suoi rapporti con l'arte occidentale contemporanea e le sue influenze con l'arte occidentale moderna.

The aim of this Master’s thesis is to examine seven public librarians’ attitudes towards manga as a new kind of literature in public libraries. Manga is an art form, originally from Japan, but in recent years manga has become very popular in the Western societies. The main issue of this thesis is how the librarians’ look at manga and what they think about manga. In this thesis I also discuss to what extension the public libraries in this study have manga in their collections, what the librarians think that public libraries today should offer their visitors and what is important to discuss when the librarians purchase books and other new media to the library. In order to answer these questions I conducted interviews with seven public librarians in children and youth departments in five public libraries in the north of Sweden. This study shows that the librarians are positive in their attitudes towards manga. Their opinion is that the public libraries could offer manga, but they think that quality is very important and they will be sure about the top-quality in the manga they offer. The librarians’ main opinion is that their lack of knowledge in manga is a problem. In this thesis I use Herbert J. Gans theory about taste cultures and taste publics and my conclusion is that there is a relation between the librarians’ knowledge and to which taste culture they belong.<br>Uppsatsnivå: D

While it has been argued in the past that organisational (re-)production of (foreign) media texts leads to a loss of creative value and that the translation robs the originals of their artistic status, this thesis argues that media are socially constructed entities that carry a multitude of voices encoded in their content and format. It thus does not focus on translation of a media text, in which a translator, re-writer and editors are involved, in terms of a textual comparison but as a practice carried out as integral part of the process of production. So are a multitude of other internal (marketing, public relations and sales) and external (laws, audiences, business environment) factors and voices. The thesis thus employes notions of polysemy to reflect on the different aspects encoded within the medium due the different approaches and interest the various areas of localisation are bound by. It thus breaks down the workflow into three different localisation stages: divided stages, during which specialists focus on singular aspects of production; the recreation of context, both in terms of the physical medium itself and the placement of it in a larger meta text; and finally the active framing and placing of the product in the local marketplace. At the end this internal focus is juxtaposed with those of external stakeholders. This approach will be framed by using organisational localisation of manga in Germany and the USA as an examplar. Following a print medium through production allows the steps to become visible since every step is accompanied by a tangible object reflecting said stage.

Research suggests that there may be gender differences in the form and course of bipolar disorder (manic depression). Much research exists that explores the relationship between gender and depression in women. The aim of this study, therefore, was to explore women's subjective experiences of mania and to examine how conceptions of gender may have shaped those experiences. This study also considered the extent to which women's experiences of mania (and depression) accord with the concept of bipolar disorder. This study was concerned with the meaning of the women's experiences within the context of their social, economic and relational lives. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore seven women's accounts of mania (and depression) which were then analysed from a Critical Realist standpoint using a qualitative approach, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Despite moments of creativity and apparent empowerment, mania emerged as a complex and often frightening phenomenon. Six themes were identified. These were concerned with: autonomy and loss of control; maintaining a coherent sense of self; 'paranoia'; a need for explanations; loss; and contradictory responses to depression. It was notable, however, that no theme was identified which was explicitly concerned with gender. Traditional categorical diagnostic approaches failed adequately to describe the women's actual experiences. It is suggested their accounts of mania (and depression) might be better accommodated within a psychological understanding of mental distress that considers the meaning and function of unusual experiences and beliefs. The clinical and theoretical implications of these findings are discussed and further areas for research outlined.

It is apparent from the literature that the accounts and descriptions of 'bipolar disorder' fail to capture the difficulties described by those who experience manic depression. The gender differences in diagnosis, the accounts and experience of manic depression (and specifically mania), have not been sufficiently explored. Furthermore, the majority of the research has been quantitative, and research that has looked at the "personal knowledge" (Peyrot, McMurry & Hedges, 1987) of individuals experiencing manic depression has been sparse. Paveley (2006) considered women's experiences within the context of their social, economic and relational lives. Paveley identified six themes: a) autonomy and the loss of control; b) maintaining a coherent sense of self; c)'paranoia'; d) a need for explanations; e) loss; and f) contradictory responses to depression. The aim of this study therefore was to explore men's experiences of mania (and depression) and to examine how conceptions of gender may have influenced those experiences within the context of their social, economic and relational lives. This study also reflected the extent to which men's experiences of mania accord with the concept of bipolar disorder. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore six men's accounts of mania (and depression) which were then analysed from a critical realist position using a qualitative approach, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Mania emerged as a complex phenomenon with related benefits and difficulties. Why now? One theme was explicitly concerned with gender and how gender mediates and is impacted by mania. There was a compelling difference between the men's explicitly gendered accounts and the 'absence' of explicit gender reference in the women's accounts in Paveley's (2006) research. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed and further areas for research outlined.

This study is performed as an Archive, Library and museum master’s thesis in two years studies. The overall aim is to investigate and analyze what the term Manga means in a library and information science context. The concept of Manga has different meanings depending on whether we start from a Japanese or a Swedish context. Manga is integrated in the Japanese society while Manga often is associated with youth culture or a separate genre in Sweden. The first issue is to examine how the Manga literature lending statistics looks in Swedish public libraries in the years 2000-2011, which is illustrated through text and graphics. A dramatic increase in Manga literature lending statistics occurred 2004 which culminated in the year of 2009. From this statistics the study also investigates which genres are represented in the Swedish public libraries. This diversity of genres and subgenres in Manga literature is sharply reduced to a few genres in Swedish public libraries where romance, comedy, action, fantasy and adventure are dominant. The second question dealt with how to define and use the term Manga? I suggest that Manga can be sorted into the concepts of Manga Literature, Manga aesthetics and Manga culture with the intention of nuance and specify the subject areas content and discussion.The third issue in this examination is dealing with how Manga literature can conveniently be placed? What are the contextual components in Manga and how do they relate to each other?

A través de una plataforma virtual (web y app) busca captar la mayor cantidad de usuarios (donantes, individuos panameños tarjeta habientes) para fortalecer la captación de recursos monetarios de organizaciones de asistencia social (los clientes, que como pago por el servicio aportarán un porcentaje de los montos recaudados). Un 93% de las 99 organizaciones identificadas en Panamá declaran su interés en participar en este modelo de negocio. Por el lado de los usuarios, el 57% estaría dispuesto a donar desde una plataforma web y el 50% desde una plataforma app. Así, se logró estimar un tamaño de mercado para el año 2016 de $1,326,773.21, y un crecimiento anual del mismo de 2%. Se sabe además que actualmente un único competidor forma parte de él, aunque con una participación de tan solo el 0.4%. Panamá es un país con una economía bastante estable y de bajo riesgo para proyectos de inversión. Además de ello cuenta con una buena infraestructura tecnológica para la implementación de un proyecto de esta índole. Los valores de la empresa serán la Excelencia y la Solidaridad, y así ofrecer la transparencia y confianza necesaria para clientes y usuarios, y del mismo modo mantenerse sobre un claro objetivo, el cual es el bien común. The perspective is widened in Chapter 2 to consider the implications of archaeological evidence for the exploitation of the landscape prior to c. 500 AD, while charter evidence, place-names and Domesday are used to illumine the integrity of the estate prior to 1189. Chapter 3 examines the nature of the landscape and the implications of its wetland, giving a context for the analysis of demesne and people. Chapter 4 commences with an analysis of demesne inputs such as expenditure, labour and land, and outputs such as rents, perquisites and sales. An evaluation of productivity enables the diminishing significance of demesne cultivation to be measured against the increase in overall income, especially from rents. Among the factors behind this economic shift are poor yields, population growth and the demand for land. The ability to raise income from rents gives the lord a strong interest in enhancing his tenants' ability to produce that income. In Chapter 5 examination of landholdings indicates an increase in land supply in excess of population growth. Models of income based on the size of a ferdel are considered, leading to investigations into the significance of pastoral income for these and smaller holdings as well as the real size of tenancies. The demand for land is reflected by levels of entry fines and also in the large number of landless males, whose presence in the court rolls assists in a short demographic study, followed by a consideration of the opportunities for employment. A favourable impression is gained of the economy of the people of Brent, based, inter alia, on lay subsidies, the availability of land, minimal evidence for hardship and the significance of Brent's place in the wider economy of the Glastonbury barony. The concluding chapter deals with the nature of the partnership between lord and tenant, both of whom had a mutual interest in the sustainability of the estate, and by working in tandem enhanced their potency to improve their prosperity.

This is a study of why Japanese comics, so-called manga, in such a high degree make Swedish readers eager to write and draw comics themselves, and what didactic implications this might have for teachers working in Sweden. To answer this, the author has put together a focus group of Swedish artists influenced by manga, and also used a questionnaire at two Swedish art schools, where young artists are taught how to draw in a manga style. The results show that it is the compelling storytelling and the focus on the characters that enthral readers about Japanese comics, but that it is the seemingly simple style that makes the readers think they themselves can master it. The fact that the interest in both reading and creating manga, almost completely overlap with the so-called period of oppression (between the ages of 11 and 14) when most students lose interest in creating art, is something that could and should be used in the Swedish educational system.

Miles de jóvenes llegaron al recinto de Calle San Diego para ver y disfrutar de un espectáculo que va más allá de lo musical. El ambiente está colorido. Sobran banderas y lienzos; parece estadio de fútbol, pero es el Caupolicán. Fuerte suena esa música que, si bien a veces es monótona, enciende a cualquiera, independiente de su clase social, edad, localidad, nacionalidad o raza. Si se está dispuesto simplemente a pasarlo bien, sólo resta una cosa por hacer: bailar. “Con las manos bien arriba” es una radiografía al movimiento que los medios de comunicación han denominado “nueva cumbia chilena”. Indaga en los orígenes, en especial de las bandas precursoras y cómo éstas fueron creando una escena que partió como proyectos personales. Apropiación de espacios, empoderamiento, autogestión, colaboración, colectividad, extremo talento, convicción y ganas de ser aquellos que alguna vez miraron hacia arriba del escenario, fueron los ingredientes para que las bandas fueran forjando esta escena. Las letras de canciones, una mezcla de denuncias sociales y vivencias de todo tipo, más una fanaticada pocas veces vista en espectáculos masivos, fueron los complementos perfectos de este estilo musical que los chilenos llevábamos en la sangre, pero que carecía de renovación y sobre todo, rebeldía. En la voz de sus principales protagonistas, se construye un relato que aborda las más importantes aristas de un movimiento que hoy repleta los escenarios más importantes del país y que poco a poco va aumentando su presencia en destacados espectáculos de la escena musical, tanto nacional, como internacional.

Considerando-se os efeitos benéficos proporcionados pelo potássio (K) em culturas rentáveis e a falta de informações sobre o efeito deste macronutriente sobre no desenvolvimento da murcha de Ceratocystis, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a forma como as plantas de manga respondem fisiologicamente à infecção causada por C. fimbriata. Plantas foram cultivadas em vasos plásticos contendo 58 ou 240 mg de K dm -3 no substrato . Os sintomas da doença mostraram-se mais pronunciados nas plantas inoculadas e supridas com a menor dose de K, atingindo valores superiores para os índices de lesão URLL (comprimento relativo acima do ponto de inoculação) 79%, RLL (comprimento relativo da lesão) 48% e RFC (colonização radial pelo fungo) 40%, em comparação àquelas que receberam a dose mais elevada (240 mg de K dm -3 ). Como consequência, declínios substanciais na condutância estomática (g s ) em consonância com reduções na taxa de concentração interna e externa de CO 2 (C i /C a ) e ausência de alterações detectáveis nos parâmetros de fluorescência da clorofila a, sugerem que reduções na taxa fotossintética (A) destas plantas deram-se, pelo menos inicialmente, devido a limitações estomáticas. Altas concentrações de potássio, cálcio e manganês foram encontradas nos tecidos do caule das plantas inoculadas e supridas com a maior concentração de K, comportamento provavelmente relacionado ao desenvolvimento local de mecanismos de defesa. Os resultados do presente estudo sugerem que o suprimento de K favorece a resistência das plantas, pois as plantas que receberam a maior dose de K apresentaram menor severidade, levando consequentemente a um melhor desempenho fotossintético.<br>The mango wilt, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fimbriata, is one of the most important diseases affecting mango production. Considering the beneficial effects provided by the potassium (K) supply in other profitable crops and the lack of information on the effect of macronutrients in the development of the mango wilt, the present study aimed to evaluate how plants respond physiologically to the infection caused by C. fimbriata. Plants were grown in plastic pots containing 58 or 240 mg K dm -3 in the substrate. Disease symptoms were more pronounced in plants inoculated and supplied with the lower K rate, reaching higher values for the disease indices URLL (upward relative lesion length) 79%, RLL (relative lesion length) 48% and RFC (radial fungal colonization) 40% when compared to those supplied with the higher rate (240 mg de K dm -3 ). Consequently, substantial declines in stomatal conductance (g s ), in line with reductions in internal-to-ambient CO 2 concentration ratio (C i /C a ) and absence of detectable changes in the chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, suggest that the reduction on the net carbon assimilation rate (A) of those plants are, at least initially, due to stomatal limitations. High concentrations of potassium, calcium and manganese were found in the stem tissues of plants inoculated and supplied with the highest concentration of K, most likely involved in the local development of defense mechanisms which possibly hold a higher resistance against pathogen’s spread. In the modern era there is a big change in the way computer networks are conceived and the old version defined by hardware implementation is leaving space for a new one based upon software functions. This innovation is the Network Function Virtualization and indeed aims at easing the management of networks and reducing the costs of their maintenance by deploying Virtual Network Functions in standard general purpose servers. The transition to this solution involved the necessity to improve the performance of virtualization techniques and with the development of new solutions now it is possible to run multiple different functions in the same physical machine. This means that also the cloud computing benefits from this technology, having computing, storaging and networking resources all easily manageable and accessible due to their separation from the hardware underneath. Therefore it is important that while building this architecture the components are properly working and interacting together and that the virtualization techniques do not produce too much overhead compared to the performance of the hardware implementation. In this essay will be discussed the Network Function Virtualization and the Open Source MANO project, focusing on its descriptors architecture and functioning. To better demonstrate how to create network topologies through these files, some examples are created and analyzed.

La metafora è in grado se usata in maniere consapevole di modificare il nostro rapporto con la comunità e quello con noi stessi.

<p>Syfte: Huvudsyftet med denna magisteruppsats är att genom diskursanalys av manga och intervjua bibliotekarier för att ta reda på vad manga innehåller för diskurser och teman; och sedan ta reda på om de bibliotekarierna som köper in manga reflekterar över vad de köper in.</p><p>Metod: Två kvalitativa forskningsmetoder</p><p>Slutsats: Manga är japanska serier och det har blivit ett populärt medium hos många barn och ungdomar på senare år. Mina studier visar att manga innehåller många olika diskurser, bl.a. diskursen om manligt/kvinnligt och många av dessa diskurser är vanliga i vår kultur också. Bibliotekariernas syn på manga är positivt, deras syn på manga kunde inte kopplas ihop med deras kunskaper om mediet. Låntagarnas förslag var det som påverkade inköpen mest, men det som också påverkade var innehållet av könssterotyper.</p>

This thesis presents young British readers? engagement with manga regarding literary, aesthetic, social, and cultural dimensions. The study explores young readers? points of views of their reading preference ? manga. I investigated how children interpreted manga, with respect to the artistic techniques, the embedded ideologies, and the cultural elements therein. I also looked into children?s participation in manga fandom and its social meanings. This allowed me to explore what attracted British readers to this exotic text. This study involved 16 participants from two schools, aged between 10 and 15, with genders represented equally. The participants were grouped by gender in each school. Each group of students received three group interviews based on three manga that they were required to read in advance. Individual interviews with each student followed the group interviews, and all the students were asked to keep reading reflections. The findings show that the attraction of participants to manga includes at least five dimensions. First, manga is a visually rich text, which not only had great power in rendering vicarious experiences to the students, but also allowed the struggling students to grasp the meanings of the text better. Second, both the verbal and the visual storytelling were characterised as fragmentary, which inspired the students? imagination to join the creation of the story. Third, manga provided a temporary shelter where the participants could forget a stressful and frustrating reality. In addition, they felt that they gained renewed hope, refreshed energy, and insights to face potential challenges and difficulties in their lives. Fourth, the elements of Japaneseness and otherness made manga reading a rich experience of an exotic culture. Fifth, manga afforded collective pleasures in fan communities where the students could express their passion and gained a sense of identity.

However, only limited groups of materials are biologically acceptable to the human body as substituents or repairing agents of soft and hard tissues. Bioactive glasses have been studied and used as synthetic grafts in clinical cases for about 30 years, and some of them can interact perfectly with body tissues. Nevertheless, their use is still restricted due to their fragility and the limitation of commercially available forms such as powder, granules or rigid scaffolds. Therefore, a research for a process to obtain fibers and meshes is promising, as this new format could expand the spectrum of clinical use of this biomaterial. Thus, this project intended to acquire highly bioactive glass fibers and, therefore, to develop meshes that can be applied both in medical and dental surgical procedures. For that purpose, new bioactive vitreous compositions were studied and developed with the following characteristics: fast interaction with body fluids to promote rapid regeneration process, this property was analyzed in vitro using SBF-K9 solution, and also reduced tendency to devitrify during its processing as fibers, as the crystallization hinders or even prevents one to obtain the fibers, and affect their mechanical strength. Using differential scanning calorimetry analysis (DSC) the compositions more suited to the downdrawing process were selected and from them it was possible to obtain continuous fibers with uniform diameter using the fiber drawing machine located at the Laboratório de Materiais Vítreos (LaMaV - UFSCar).<br>Intensivos estudos têm sido realizados nas últimas duas décadas buscando a aplicação de biomateriais como enxertos sintéticos visando à reparação e manutenção de ossos, dentes e cartilagens danificados ou perdidos devido a traumas ou processos patológicos. No entanto, somente classes restritas de materiais são biologicamente aceitos pelo corpo humano como substituintes e/ou agentes reparadores dos tecidos moles e duros. Os vidros bioativos vêm sendo estudados e utilizados como enxertos sintéticos nestes casos clínicos a cerca de 30 anos, e alguns deles conseguem uma excelente interação com tecidos corpóreos. Entretanto, sua utilização ainda é restrita devido à sua fragilidade e também à limitação de suas formas disponibilizadas comercialmente, como pó, granulado ou scaffolds rígidos. Portanto, a busca de um processo para a formação de fibras e mantas se apresenta bastante promissora, já que este novo formato poderia expandir o espectro de utilização clínica deste biomaterial. Assim, este projeto teve como objetivo obter fibras de vidros altamente bioativas e, por conseguinte, desenvolver mantas que poderão ser aplicadas tanto em procedimentos cirúrgicos médicos quanto odontológicos. Para tanto, foram estudadas e desenvolvidas novas composições vítreas bioativas que possuem as seguintes características: rápida interação com os fluidos corpóreos para promoção acelerada do processo de regeneração, sendo esta característica analisada in vitro com solução de SBF-K9, mínima tendência de cristalização durante seu processamento em fibras, já que isto dificulta e até pode impedir a obtenção das mesmas e interferir na resistência mecânica do produto final. Por meio de ensaios de calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC) as composições mais adaptadas a esse processo foram selecionadas, e a partir destas foi possível obter fibras contínuas e de diâmetro controlado, visto que se utilizou o processo de downdrawing com a máquina de puxamento de fibras localizada no Laboratório de Materiais Vítreos (LaMaV - UFSCar).

We believed that knowledge organisation of manga and manhwa with homosexual (including lesbian) themes might be a challenge for Swedish public libraries. One of the reasons for this is that these themes in manga and manhwa usually occur in genres not directed towards an LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) audience. To see how Swedish public libraries treat such titles and why they treat them as they do, we examined a selection of public libraries, their collections, acquisitions, cataloguing and shelving of relevant titles. The theory used is mainly Grant Campbell’s binarisms, subject access to LGBTQ literature and critical analysis of knowledge organisation. Three methods were utilised: online directory searches, a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with librarians. We found a number of relevant titles. Among the selection criterions used, librarians mentioned acquisition requests and title reviews. Several libraries did not perform original cataloguing or did not use subject headings indicating homosexual themes. Some of the subject headings used to indicate such themes were manga terms, others were terms directed towards users seeking literature with homosexual themes. Shelving practises varied slightly, depending, among other things, on what librarians perceived to be the target audience. Some libraries displayed titles with homosexual themes during occasions such as pride festivals. Overall, the libraries we examined claimed not to give any special treatment to titles with homosexual themes. How much work the librarians put into facilitating searches for these titles varied by their personal interest and time available.

Para esta determinação, utilizou-se quatro amostras de polpa de manga: a integral, a peneirada, a centrifugada e a concentrada. A polpa integral (12,7 °Brix) foi produzida era laboratório e refinada em um despolpador de malha 1.8 mm. A polpa integral foi penetrada em uma malha 0.149 mm, centrifugada e concentrada até 30 °Brix. A caracterização da polpa foi feita determinando-se o teor de sólidos solúveis e insolúveis, umidade, cinzas, açúcares totais e redutores, pH, acidez total e pectina. A densidade foi medida por picnometria nas temperaturas de 10°C, 20°C 30°C. 40°C e 50°C. A difiisividade térmica foi medida acima do ponto de inicio de congelamento utilizando uma cápsula cilíndrica. O calor específico foi medido através de um Calorímetro Diferencial de Varredura (DSC) de -40°C a 40°C. e também com o auxílio do DSC foi possível determinar algumas propriedades associadas ao congelamento, como a temperatura de início e de pico de fusão, a entalpia de fusão e o conteúdo de água não congelada. Alguns modelos encontrados na literatura foram utilizados para o cálculo da densidade, da difusrvidade térmica, do calor específico e da condutividade térmica, e os valores obtidos foram comparados aos dados experimentais das propriedades termofísicas. Observou-se que os modelos utilizados podem predizer as propriedades termofísicas da polpa de manga<br>Abstract: The objective of this work was to identify the main thermophysical properties involved in the thermal processing of mango pulp (variety Tommy Atkins). Four different types of mango pulp were used in order to identify these properties: whole, screened, centrifuged and concentrated pulp. In order to obtain these four types of pulp, the whole pulp (12,7º Brix), obtained in the laboratory, was refined using a finisher with a 1.8 mm mesh,screened using a 0.149 mm mesh, centrifuged and concentrated to 30º Brix. The characterization of the pulp was effected by the determination of the soluble and insoluble solids in the pulp, moisture, ash, total and reducing sugar, pH, total acids and pectin. The density was determined using pycnometers at 10 °C, 20 °C, 30 WC, 40 °C and 50 °C The thermal diffusivity was determined above the freezing point using a cylindrical capsule. A Differential Scanning Calorimeter was used to determine the specific heat, in the range from -40 °C to 40 "C, and also properties such as the initial temperature of melting and melting point, enthalpy of melting and unfrozen water content of the pulp. Some of the thermophysical properties measured in this work, such as density, specific heat, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity were also calculated by some models found in the literature. Después de escuchar los debates políticos que han tenido lugar en las dos vueltas de estas elecciones, no resulta sorprendente comprobar que uno de los pocos temas donde existe prácticamente consenso es la urgente necesidad de ejecutar una profunda reforma educativa, de cuyos beneficios potenciales para el país somos conscientes una considerable mayoría de ciudadanos.

Fieldwork was conducted at Karu Tjiḻpi Tjuṯaku (Ten Mile Crrek Elders' Bush Camp) north of Coober Pedy.

Over the past two decades snorkelling or diving with manta rays has become a highly sought after experience for tourists worldwide. The Coral Bay manta ray interaction industry has experienced significant growth since its inception in the early 1990s, and concerns have been raised in recent years regarding disturbance to the manta ray population, and behavioural changes due to tourist interactions. This study was a preliminary assessment of the effect of tourism interactions on Manta alfredi behaviour in Coral Bay, Western Australia. In order to identify behavioural responses or changes, the natural behaviours exhibited by manta rays in the waters of Coral Bay were identified and described, and in doing so this study was the first to describe in detail four distinct foraging behaviours that are yet to be explained in the published literature. A total of 91 manta ray interactions were observed over a four month period to determine the frequency, form and influencing factors of short-term behavioural responses to three separate elements of the tourist interactions: the interaction with the swim group, the tour vessel and the attempt at capturing an identification photo. Behavioural responses were exhibited by manta rays during 34.1 % of interactions with swim groups (n = 91), 15.5 % of interactions with tour vessels (n = 98), and 48.1 % of manta rays exhibited a response to photo identification attempts (n = 77). Several factors were found to influence the occurrence of a behavioural response including the initial behavioural state and age class of the manta ray, the amount of surface splash, the approach strategy of the tour operator or photographer, the duration of the interaction and whether or not it was the manta ray’s first interaction that day. Forms of behavioural responses ranged from immediate avoidance responses to changes in behavioural state, including the termination of feeding behaviours and departure from cleaning stations. Such responses have the potential to lead to biologically significant impacts on the population, including declines in abundance and habitat displacement. Further study is necessary to confirm these links; however as the manta ray tourism industry continues to expand, precautionary management intervention is recommended. Responses to a tourist survey indicated high levels of visitor experience and education. A heightened perception of crowding with increasing group numbers was reported, however tourist perception of disturbance to manta rays during interactions was low. Analysis of general habitat usage identified Bateman Bay as a critical habitat for feeding, cleaning and courtship behaviour, and found that tourist interactions take place in these same critical habitat areas. Sighting demographics indicated that the majority of interactions were with resident female manta rays, further emphasising the need for management; these females are not only subjected to interactions throughout the entire year, they also are more dependent on critical habitat areas, and may be important breeding individuals within the population. The tour operators observed in this study voluntarily adhered to the Code of Conduct for Manta Ray Interactions designed to minimise disturbance to the manta ray population. These results therefore represent the level of short-term responses induced by compliant operators. The efficiency of the code of conduct in minimising disturbance to manta rays remains unknown, since the long-term implications of short-term behavioural changes are yet to be determined, as are the compliance levels of operators not observed in this study. Given this uncertainty, it is recommended that all operators be required to adopt a mandatory code of conduct to ensure consistency across the industry that can be monitored accordingly. On-going assessment of behavioural responses along with operator compliance, and monitoring of the manta ray population is also recommended.

In this study I examine the representation of masculinity in the manga, Naruto.  The manga is about the orphan Naruto, who, together with other children goes to a ninja school. Boys and girls study and practice together, at first sight seemingly without emphasized gender differences. As the story continues, the gender differences are, however, quite obvious and to the boys advantage. I find the difference between Naruto and other popular culture ususally presented to pre-bubertal and teenage boys to be considerable. Whereas the domination of women and the message that you can get as far as you wish, are common in American and west produced popular culture as well as in Naruto, the difference lies in how the success is achieved. The men in Naruto reach their goals by allowing their feelings to be seen and expressed. They cry, love, comfort and hate, the feelings give the men strength  The loving is not sexualized, but expressedly aimed at friends, pupils and all of humankind, and the outcome is a wish to protect the loved ones. The hate on the other hand is considered as a one-way road, and Naruto’s power is his ability to make those who have given in to hate to see this. A cultural studies approach allows me to argue för seeing Naruto as part of what is constructing masculinity in Sweden today. The hegemonic masculinity in Naruto is confident, healthy and white. It differs from femininity by expressing it’s goals and by reaching victory in the battles it parttake. It is however also loving, caring, comforting and able to express sadness and loneliness as well as anger.

The aim of this thesis is to examine the origins and function of medieval Rothley, Leicestershire, its manorial holdings, its soke and its parish. Later maps and both later and earlier written sources were examined to elucidate these elements and answer the questions posed. Documents from a number of sources have been used, primarily from the Rothley Temple Manuscripts held in the Records Office for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, but also from printed volumes of documents from national archives. Evidence contained within these sources has been used to elucidate some of the anomalies found within the landscape, and to give an indication of the sequence of events which helped to form the fields and townships within the soke. Parochial documents have been used to attempt to establish the origins of Rothley parish, and the nature of the ministry of Rothley church as a Hundredal minster has been postulated and examined. The documentary evidence suggests that Rothley was a parish of some importance in the tenth century, and that this parish may have arisen in association with the formation of the Hundred of Goscote. The settlement of Rothley offers some insights into these postulated origins, and the chapels serve to exemplify the extent of the parochial, manorial and soke jurisdiction. Further evidence of the nature of Rothley soke as a royal jurisdiction are examined through the rights which the tenants negotiated with their superior lords. The special privileges which the tenants of the ancient demesne enjoyed were strengthened by their ability to work co-operatively to achieve favourable outcomes in manorial disputes. These relationships will be examined in the course of the thesis, and conclusions on their significance will be reached.

In this thesis I develop a cohesive phenomenological account of mania and depression. Whilst phenomenological insights have been applied to a number of psychiatric disorders – most notably schizophrenia – mania, depression, and bipolar disorder have been neglected. In developing my account I challenge the common understanding of mania and depression as opposed. Through an examination of bodily and temporal experiences in mania and depression I unearth deeper structural commonalities. This allows for greater insight into the relationship between the two states and casts light on ‘mixed episodes’, where features of mania and depression co-occur. In my exploration of bodily experience I argue for an understanding of the depressed body as ‘corporealized’. I show how this helps us to understand common descriptions of the body and the world found in first person accounts. I challenge the intuitive distinction between the body as 'active and invisible' and 'inactive and conspicuous' by showing that the manic body is both conspicuous and active. I argue that we can enhance our understanding of this bodily experience through an appreciation of the associated temporal experience. Turning to the topic of time, I reveal the inadequacies of accounts that suggest that alterations in experiences of time in mania and depression are restricted to changes in temporal velocity. Using the Husserlian concepts of ‘retention’ and ‘protention’ I develop a new model of temporal experience in mania and depression, arguing that in addition to changes in temporal 'velocity' we also find changes in temporal structure. This account allows us to understand common experiences in mania, including feelings of grandiosity, a loss of reflection, and the active yet conspicuous body. Likewise, it casts light on experiences common in depression, including guilt, a perception of recovery as impossible, and feelings of separation from others.

Utilizou-se um secador tubular em ciclo fechado e em pressão atmosférica com um leito fixo de sílica-gel instalado em série. Estudou-se o fenômeno de transferência de massa durante a secagem através do modelo de difusão de Fick, considerando duas diferentes hipóteses: (i) difusividade efetiva como uma função exponencial da umidade, implicando em uma solução numérica através do método explícito de diferenças finitas e (ii) difusividade efetiva constante, permitindo uma solução analítica. As curvas de secagem calculadas pelas equações resultantes destas duas soluções foram comparadas com os dados experimentais. A modelagem foi aplicada a uma geometria cilíndrico-oca (manta sem corte abdominal), com a superfície interna isolada do ambiente de secagem através de um filme plástico, moldado no formato de um tubo e introduzido na cavidade da manta (condição de contorno com parede impermeável). O ar soprado sobre a amostra apresentou velocidade de 1,05 m/s, sendo recirculado e desumidificado no leito de sílica-gel<br>Abstract: This work studied the drying of squid mande (Loligo brasiliensis), previously salted and smoked by liquid smoking (hickory extract), using a tubular dryer in closed cycle with a silica-gel fixed bed in series. The mass transfer phenomenon during drying was studied, based on the Fick's law. Two hypothesis were tested. In the first one, the effective diffusivity was taken as an exponential function of moisture, solved by the finite difference explicit method. The second hypothesis tested in this work supposed the effective diffusivity to be constant, which enabled an analytical solution to the problem. The drying curves ca1culated with the resulting equations of these two different solving procedures were compared with experimental data. The model was applied to a hollow cylinder geometry (round squid mande), with its internal surface isolated from the drying environrnent by a plastic film. The latter was given a tubular form and introduced inside the mande cavity (impervious wall boundary condition). The drying was carried out with a dry bulb temperature of 34,3± 1,0 °C inside the dryer and a wet bulb temperature of 15,7±1,7 °C (relative humidity of 9,1 ±3,9 %). <p> The purpose of this project was to develop and fund an intervention program that provides a psycho-educational and peer support group to Hispanic parents and siblings who have a child or a brother/sister on the autism spectrum disorder. The goal of the project is to provide education, resources, and peer support for Hispanic parents and siblings who are currently receiving behavior interventions, with the focus being on the mothers and siblings. Behavior Functions, Inc. was the agency selected as the focus of this project.</p><p> An extensive literature review was conducted to examine the need for implementation of this program. The knowledge gained through the literature assisted the grant writer in developing a grant that meets the needs of Hispanic parents and siblings of children on the spectrum. Submission and/or funding were not required for the successful completion of this project.</p>

A manga destaca-se como uma fruta de alto valor comercial. Sua sazonalidade favorece a industrialização visando melhor aproveitamento e diminuição das perdas de produção. O objetivo desse trabalho foi a comparar o tempo de vida útil da polpa de manga Ubá orgânica, pasteurizada, com a polpa de manga Ubá orgânica, congelada, através da qualidade nutritiva, sensorial e microbiológica. Foram adquiridos 2100 kg de manga da variedade Ubá orgânica certificada, proveniente da Zona da Mata do Estado de Minas Gerais, safra 2004/2005. Para o processamento, as mangas foram divididas em três lotes: no primeiro e no segundo, a polpa passou por uma pasteurização, em que foram testados os binômios (tempo/temperatura) de 75 ºC por 8,7 min e 80 ºC por 4,6 min. O terceiro lote foi destinado à produção de polpa submetida somente ao congelamento. As polpas foram acondicionadas em dois tipos de embalagens uma metalizada e outra transparente, resultando em seis tratamentos. As alterações nas características físico-químicas, nutritivas, microbiológica e na coloração foram avaliadas por seis meses. Os resultados observados no presente trabalho permitiram concluir que em referência a qualidade nutricional o método de conservação mais eficiente foi a pasteurização com o binômio de 75ºC/ 8,7 min. Diante dos resultados obtidos, chegou-se às seguintes conclusões: o método de conservação mais eficiente para garantir o qualidade nutricional foi a pasteurização com o binômio de 75 ºC por 8,7 min e a embalagem a mais eficiente foi a metalizada; os três métodos de conservação foram eficazes em relação a qualidade físico-química, onde os valores de pH e sólidos solúveis totais permaneceram dentro dos limites estabelecidos pela legislação para polpa de manga, independente do tipo de embalagem; a polpa congelada foi a que apresentou menor alteração de cor, independente do tipo de embalagem; a eficiência do congelamento e dos dois binômios de pasteurização (75 ºC por 8,7 min e 80 ºC por 4,6 min) para a garantia da estabilidade microbiológica do produto foi apurada; a atividade enzimática decorrente da não inativação pelo congelamento lento exerceu maior efeito sobre o teor de ácido ascórbico do que a pasteurização. O efeito do congelamento rápido, visando aumentar a preservação do ácido ascórbico, pode ser testado por causa da alta degradação da vitamina C na polpa congelada. Em geral, pode-se concluir que a polpa congelada, no final de seis meses de armazenamento, estava em melhor estado de conservação e que a embalagem metalizada foi a mais eficiente._________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: The mango stands out as a fruit of high commercial value. Its seasonability favors the industrialization seeking better use and decrease of the production losses. The objective of this work was to compare the time of useful life of the organic Ubá mango pulp, pasteurized, with the organic Ubá mango pulp, frozen, through the quality nutritious, sensorial and microbiological. 2100 kg of mango of the certified organic Ubá variety were acquired, originating from Zona da Mata of the State of Minas Gerais , crop 2004/2005. To the processing, the mangos were divided in three lots: in the first and in the second, the pulp went by a pasteurization, where the binomials (time/temperature) of 75 ºC per 8,7 min and 80 ºC per 4,6 min were tested. The third lot was destined to the pulp production only submitted to the freezing. The pulps were conditioned in two types of packing: a metallic one and a transparent one, resulting in six treatments. The alterations in the physical-chemistries characteristics, nutritious, microbiological and in the coloration were appraised for six months. The results observed in this work allowed to conclude that in reference the nutritional quality, the most efficient method of conservation was the pasteurization with the binomial of 75ºC / 8,7 min. Before the obtained results, it was reached the following conclusions: the most efficient method of conservation to guarantee the nutritional quality was the pasteurization with the binomial of 75 ºC per 8,7 min and the most efficient packing was the metallic one; the three conservation methods were effective in relation to physical-chemistry quality, where the pH values and total soluble solids stayed inside of the established limits for the legislation for mango pulp, independent of the packing type; the frozen pulp was the one that presented smaller color alteration, independent of the packing type; the efficiency of the freezing and of the two pasteurization binomials (75 ºC per 8,7 min and 80 ºC per 4,6 min) for the warranty of the microbiological stability of the product was checked; the enzymatic activity due to the non inactivation for the slow freezing, exercised larger effect on the tenor of ascorbic acid than the pasteurization. The effect of the fast freezing, seeking to increase the preservation of the ascorbic acid, can be tested because of the high degradation of the vitamin C in the frozen pulp. In general, it can be concluded that the frozen pulp, at the end of six months of storage, was in better conservation state and that the metallic packing was the most efficient.

No. of bitstreams: 1 280383.pdf: 419981 bytes, checksum: 811df75715ebd9cf7d4456a609c2f17a (MD5)<br>Realizou-se um estudo de diferentes tecnologias de desidratação e o desenvolvimento de um método alternativo de secagem por ciclos de aquecimento-pulso de vácuo (CAPV) para a obtenção de manga desidratada com qualidade superior. Para isso, investigou-se a desidratação osmótica (DO) como pré-tratamento à secagem. As condições de processo usadas durante a DO foram solução osmótica a 65oBrix, a 30oC, e razão mássica de fruta:solução de 1:30. A transferência de massa durante a DO foi caracterizada pela determinação dos parâmetros relativos à perda de massa (PM), perda de água (PA) e ganho de sólidos (GS). A partir dos resultados obtidos, o tempo de processo selecionado foi de 5 horas, onde o valor de PA foi de 58%, o GS foi de 10,16% e a PM foi de 45%. Para o mesmo tempo, o valores da atividade de água (aw) e da umidade (Ubs) foram, respectivamente, de 0,916 e 1,27g de água/g de sólidos secos. A partir disto, confirmou-se a necessidade de um processo de secagem complementar para a preservação do produto final. Assim, estudou-se a secagem convectiva (SC) e a secagem por CAPV das amostras pré-tratadas por DO e das amostras sem pré-tratamento. Durante a SC, em estufa com circulação forçada de ar a 60oC, observou-se que em 16 horas de processo a Ubs das amostras pré-tratadas foi de 0,22g de água/g de sólidos secos e a aw foi de 0,462, enquanto que as amostras sem pré-tratamento apresentaram valores de Ubs 0,02 g de água/g de sólidos secos e de aw de 0,358. Além disso, as amostras ao final da SC apresentaram estrutura colapsada, verificada tanto na microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), quanto pelo comportamento da curva de força-deformação nos ensaios mecânicos de perfuração. A secagem por CAPV consistiu no acondicionamento das amostras em uma grade e na alocação desta dentro de uma câmara encamisada. As amostras foram aquecidas até 60oC e a câmara foi fechada e pressurizada. Após 5 minutos de vácuo, a pressão do sistema foi restabelecida e as amostras foram aquecidas novamente, para aplicação de um novo ciclo de secagem. O cálculo do número de pulsos de vácuo aplicados na fruta foi determinado através da massa de água evaporada em cada ciclo, conforme a equação: mevap=(mamostraCp×T)/Hvaporização. Amostras secas a partir de frutas in natura apresentaram, após 12 ciclos, Ubs =0,09 g de água/g sólidos secos, e aw = 0,359, enquanto para as amostras pré-tratadas que sofreram 10 ciclos, estes valores foram: Ubs =0,14g de água/g de sólidos secos e aw=0,375. Amostras de manga comerciais liofilizadas foram também avaliadas e apresentaram valores de Ubs =0,08g de água/g de sólidos secos e aw =0,325, valores próximos dos valores observados para amostras secas por CAPV. Além de possibilitar a obtenção de produtos com baixos teores de umidade e atividade de água ao final da secagem, as frutas secas por CAPV apresentaram textura crocante, evidenciada pelas curvas irregulares obtidas nos ensaios mecânicos. Através das análises de MEVs foram verificadas a formação da matriz porosa e a semelhança da estrutura das amostras secas por CAPV com as amostras comerciais liofilizadas. Deste modo, este trabalho apresenta resultados que podem ser de grande utilidade para o aproveitamento industrial e agregação de valor às mangas.<br>Different technologies of dehydration were compared to an alternative dry method, which consisted in the application of successive cycles of heating-and-puffing (multi-puff-drying, MPD) to obtain high quality dried mangoes. Osmotic dehydration (OD) was investigated as a pre-treatment to drying. The OD process conditions used were sucrose at a concentration of 65oBrix under 30oC with a solution:sample mass relation of 30:1. The mass transport was characterized by the determination of sample mass loss (ML) water loss (WL) and sugar gain (SG). At 5 h after the beginning of the processing, it was observed 58% of WL, 45% of ML and 10% of SG of the sample. At same evaluation time, the values of water activity (aw) and moisture content (Wdb) was 0.916 and 1.27 g water/g dry solids, respectively. The results from the OD pre-treaments confirmed the need of a complementary drying process to preserve mangoes. Therefore, it was carried out a study comparing convective drying (CD) and MPD processes of pretreated and non-pretreated mango samples. The CD treatment consisted in to dry the sample at 60oC in a forced air drier for 16 h. The Wdb of mango sample was 0.22 g water/g dry solids for pretreated and 0.02 g water/g dry solids non-pretreated, respectively. The aw were 0.462 and 0.358 for pretreatment and non-treatment samples, respectively. Moreover, samples at the end of CD have showed a compact structure, which was verified by the analysis of sample images with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by the behavior of Strain-force curves from mechanical measurements of puncturing tests. The MPD drying consisted of storing the samples in a grid and then allocated it inside a jacketed container. The samples were heated up to 60oC, then samples were maintained under vacuum during 5 min, which consisted in a cycle. The number of cycles were estimated by considering that the flash evaporation was a isenthalpic process, i.e., mevap= (msampleCp×T)/Hvaporization. Dried samples from fresh mango showed, after 12 cycles Wdb = 0.09 g water/g dry solids, and aw = 0.359, while pre-treated samples after 10 cycles of MPD showed of 0.14 g water/g dry solids and aw of 0.375. Commercial dried mangoes by freeze-drying process Wdb of 0.08g water/g dry solids and aw values of 0.325, which were similar to the observed values of dried samples under MPD. In addition, MPD resulted in a final product with low moisture content and water activity in the end of drying process with crispy texture confirmed by strain-force curves. The analysis of images with SEM, it was verified the similar formation of a porous matrix on the sample surface between MPD samples and commercial freeze-dried samples. Thus, the presented results showed that MPD has potential industrial use and may add value to dry mango products.

The text consists of five separate essays that interconnect with each other as rhizomes. Each essay is based on different artists or authors that have influenced my creative decisions. By interpreting their works, I reveal different problems and aspects that are essential in my own artistic practice. Michelangelo Antonioni films, Silvia Baechli drawing, Witold Gombrowicz novel "Cosmos", Alain Robbe-Grillet fiction and Alain Resnais film "Last year at Marienbad" are considered in separate essays. The final essay analyses one of my paintings.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>MANA (Map Aware, Non-uniform, Automata) is an agent-based, time-stepped, stochastic mission-level modeling environment developed by the New Zealand Defense Technology Agency (DTA). While the MANA user manual goes into detail about setting up a scenario and navigating the user interface, it does not discuss some of the underlying mathematical procedures and algorithms resulting in many individuals utilizing MANA to analyze military operations without necessarily understanding how the results are achieved. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the mathematical formulas that MANA utilizes in an effort to aid in creating a more informed understanding of results reached by MANA. This work is intended as a supplement to the current MANA user manual. We will investigate how manipulating the parameters of the squads’ influence behavior on the battlefield. The format will follow a militarily oriented thought process of shoot, move and communicate, investigating mathematically how results are reached within the model. At the conclusion, there will be recommendations as to follow-up work.
