Abstract:
Multi-robot path planning faces challenges such as conflict avoidance, collaboration, and dynamic environments. This paper proposes a multi-robot path planning algorithm that integrates the improved nutcracker optimization algorithm with the improved dynamic window approach. To address the nutcracker algorithm’s sensitivity to initial conditions and slow convergence, a population initialization strategy is introduced for more diverse initial populations. Additionally, a simplified path node strategy is also designed to shorten paths and reduce steering times. By incorporating a dynamic inertia weight factor , the balance between global exploration and local optimization is improved. To address the limitations of the dynamic window approach, which is unable to avoid dynamic obstacles instantly and is prone to falling into local optimal solutions, the target distance subfunction, the path evaluation subfunction and the deviation from danger zone subfunction are added to the evaluation function. Finally, the two algorithms were fused together and we conducted four experiments to validate the performance of the MANOA, IDWA, and MANOA-IDWA algorithms, as well as the application of MANOA-IDWA in multi-robot path planning. Results show that MANOA-IDWA significantly increases path planning success rates in dynamic environments, producing shorter and smoother paths, thus enhancing the safety and stability of multi-robot operations.

Abstract:
The Kaua‘i species Schiedea kauaiensis H. St. John was previously characterized by a geographical range including a number of Napali Coast valleys and the Limahuli, Wainiha, and Manoa valleys in the northern part of the island whereas the closely related S. perlmanii W. L. Wagner & Weller occurs in the Anahola area and on Ha‘upu on the windward (eastern) side of Kaua‘i. The primary characteristic distinguishing them is a subshrub habit for S. kauaiensis vs a vining habit in S. perlmanii. In several localities from northern Kaua‘i including Limahuli, Wainiha, and Manoa valleys, populations were known only from herbarium specimens but were included within S. kauaiensis in part because these localities were closest to the Napali Coast valleys, which encompasses the remainder of the range of the species. Recent field work resulting in discovery of new populations and cultivation of plants from Limahuli and Manoa has shown that plants from these three northern localities do not represent S. kauaiensis but rather fit with S. perlmanii. Two of the collections from this northern area are the types of S. wichmanii H. St. John and S. kauaiensis. Since these names were published earlier, we must adopt here the earliest name, S. kauaiensis, for the plants formerly known as S. perlmanii leaving the species from the Napali Coast valleys without a name and described here as a new species, S. napaliensis W. L. Wagner & Weller.

Fallon, Samuel. "Samson’s Ransom." Milton Studies 67, no. 1 (2025): 153–79. https://doi.org/10.5325/miltonstudies.67.1.0153.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Milton’s worldly, prosaic Manoa has won few admirers, and the ransom plot in Samson Agonistes often elicits puzzlement. This article situates Manoa in relation to the soteriological anxieties that Milton’s tragedy explores. Drawing on Freud’s psychoanalytic account of monotheism, this article suggests that Manoa’s presence clarifies the paternal substitution realized in Samson’s elevation by God, but also threatens to unsettle it. Whereas Yahweh chooses Samson, Manoa’s love is fundamentally choiceless—an expression of an absolute bond. Reading Samson against two other Judges tragedies—Buchanan’s and Vondel’s plays about Jephthah’s sacrifice—the article argues that Milton’s dramatic poem reveals both the allure of chosenness and its psychological impasses. Manoa’s unconditional love offers a release from the drama of election. But Samson’s tragedy is that he can only reject it: to accept a love that demands nothing, that needs no choice, would mean giving up his most cherished wish—the wish to be chosen.

Abstract:
This article examines the ways in which the Fijian authors Vanessa Griffen, Pio Manoa, and Subramani revised and reworked modernist texts in their construction of a local postcolonial literature. These writers were schooled in a colonial education system that was, by the 1950s and 60s, in ideological disarray, as the jingoistic, imperial texts of the English syllabus began to give way to the crisis and self-interrogation of literary modernism. The students who graduated from these classes went on to create a first wave of Fijian creative writing in English. As this article shows, Griffen, Manoa, and Subramani carried into their writing fragments and forms of the texts they had been required to learn by rote, and they refashioned these into new wholes. In their short stories and poems of the late 1960s and early 70s, these writers turned the literature of past imperial breakdown towards present and future needs, adapting fragmentary, perspectival and multivocal texts towards a postcolonial independence still riven by colonially introduced problems. Ultimately, we argue, the creation of this new literature denotes the failure of the education system to impress British superiority upon its colonial subjects, and the success of the subaltern in reclaiming the means of expression.

Abstract:
Forestry and forest products research has entered into a robust research agenda focused on creating nano-sized particles and nanoproducts from wood. As wood-based materials can be sustainably produced, the potential of these renewable products could be limitless and include high-end compostable electronics, paint-on solar panels, and lightweight materials for airplanes and cars. Others warn about potential serious negative health and environmental consequences. Either way, wood-based nanomaterials could disrupt forestry as we know it. This article is a summary and analysis of a collaborative research project exploring the futures of wood-based nanomaterials within the context of the futures of forests and forest management within the United States. We start by describing the history of forestry through the lens of the U.S. Forest Service, then describe nanotechnology in general and wood-based nanocellulose specifically. Next, we outline the Manoa School alternative futures method, and how we used it to design and carry out a “complete futures of x” project. Following the Manoa School approach, we describe four alternative futures for forestry and forest management. We conclude with implications for the future of forestry, forests, and forest-based nanomaterials, as well as a discussion on the implementation of a complete “futures of x” project.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTHigh levels ofEscherichia coliwere frequently detected in tropical soils in Hawaii, which present important environmental sources ofE. colito water bodies. This study systematically examinedE. coliisolates from water and soil of several watersheds in Hawaii and observed high overall genotypic diversity (35.5% unique genotypes). In the Manoa watershed, fewer than 9.3% of the observedE. coligenotypes in water and 6.6% in soil were shared between different sampling sites, suggesting the lack of dominant fecal sources in the watershed. High temporal variability ofE. coligenotypes in soil was also observed, which suggests a dynamicE. colipopulation corresponding with the frequently observed high concentrations in tropical soils. WhenE. coligenotypes detected from the same sampling events were compared, limited sharing between the soil and water samples was observed in the majority of comparisons (73.5%). However, several comparisons reported up to 33.3% overlap ofE. coligenotypes between soil and water, illustrating the potential for soil-water interactions under favorable environmental conditions. In addition, genotype accumulation curves forE. colifrom water and soil indicated that the sampling efforts in the Manoa watershed could not exhaust the overall genotypic diversity. Comparisons ofE. coligenotypes from other watersheds on Oahu, Hawaii, identified no apparent grouping according to sampling locations. The results of the present study demonstrate the complexity of usingE. colias a fecal indicator bacterium in tropical watersheds and highlight the need to differentiate environmental sources ofE. colifrom fecal sources in water quality monitoring.

Abstract:
In this article the authors discuss on topics arising from globalization issues that should be included in public administration education. Globalization is a pervasive force for the foreseeable future, and both public administrators and public administration education must adapt and respond to that force. Factors assocated with globalization are having, and are likely to continue to have, profound effects on the public institutions. And the institutions will play a critial role in determining who benefits and who loses from globalization, both within nations and between them. How public institutions engage globalization issues will depend upon a number of factors, some of which are seemingly beyond anyone's control. One of the factors we can control is how we educate people in public roles. Paying careful attention to the content of public service education, as well as the more subtle but powerful proces issues associated with that education, can gave large public benefits.

Abstract:
A phenomenological stance is adopted in this inquiry into the concept of intelligence. The term intelligence is discussed as a uniquely Western concept that has been defined and refined, with significant implications for people in educational settings. A brief critical literature review includes discussion of some influential models of human thought and intelligence measurement and their application in school settings. Three practicing University of Hawaii at Manoa professors are engaged individually in reflective conversations, during which they discuss their notions of intelligence together with the researcher. From their shared conversations, meanings emerge which are expressed here in separate descriptive interpretations for each professor. The emergent understandings are intended to explore and illuminate some current conceptions of intelligence in an academic setting. From these descriptions educators and researchers may recognize relevant meanings for themselves regarding the improvement of the school learning situation.

Abstract:
The incidence of metabolic and chronic diseases including cancer, obesity, inflammation-related diseases sharply increased in the 21st century. Major underlying causes for these diseases are inflammation and oxidative stress. Accordingly, natural products and their bioactive components are obvious therapeutic agents for these diseases, given their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research in this area has been significantly expanded to include chemical identification of these compounds using advanced analytical techniques, determining their mechanism of action, food fortification and supplement development, and enhancing their bioavailability and bioactivity using nanotechnology. These timely topics were discussed at the 20th Frontier Scientists Workshop sponsored by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, held at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on 23 November 2019. Scientists from South Korea and the U.S. shared their recent research under the overarching theme of Bioactive Compounds, Nanoparticles, and Disease Prevention. This review summarizes presentations at the workshop to provide current knowledge of the role of natural products in the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases.

Abstract:
Hawaii is unique in a variety of ways. One of these is the unusual ethnic mixture that makes up its population; under traditional definitions 76% of its population is “minority” and 24% is “White.” The performance of those of its high school students who go on to the University of Hawaii-Manoa on the SAT-Verbal is higher than the national mean, and on the SAT-Mathematical it is much higher. However, the correlation of SAT scores with first year grades has decreased to almost zero since 1982 among Hawaiian students (although among mainland students at UH it is the same as the national average). In this article we provide the facts for a mystery regarding the low and decreasing validity of the SAT at the University of Hawaii among students from Hawaiian secondary schools. Moreover, while we are unable to provide a complete solution, we do eliminate one onerous suspect and provide an evocative hint.

Abstract:
This paper presents the design exploration of a studio conducted at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The study began with the premise that high-rise housing in Honolulu is not a viable solution within such a unique natural and urban setting. Students have challenged the issue by testing and experimenting on a variety of distinct housing alternatives within the studio. The studio then introduced some pedagogical agenda of housing to students and required an analytical project that focused on the dwelling and its collective form to elucidate fundamentals of housing design. This study laid the groundwork of each student's design development throughout the project, upon completion a variety of different designs and solutions were proposed responded to distinct themes and problems. In this article, different types of housing prototypes and their distinctive clustering as a unique urban village as a whole are shown, and the final model of the studio as a collective form is presented. In conclusion, the pedagogical value of the design studio is discussed.

Abstract:
The National Center for the Study of Postsecondary Education Supports (NCSPES) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa-Center on Disability Studies (CDS) conducted a study that consisted of one survey distributed twice (the second distribution was two years after the first) to a national sample of approximately 1,600 Disability Support Coordinators working in postsecondary educational institutions. The survey focused on the types and frequency of educational supports, accommodations, and services offered to students with disabilities attending two- and four-year postsecondary institutions. This article reports on the findings from two sections of the survey: one, that asked the respondents to address their institutions capacity to offer assistive technology (AT) supports, accommodations, and services as needed by students with disabilities; and another that addressed the availability of distance learning access opportunities. A comparison of findings, over the two-year period, is presented and includes a significant increase in all types of AT supports, accommodations, and services other than AT evaluations; and an increase in the provision of distance learning access opportunities.

Abstract:
The nature and frequency of educational support provision in postsecondary education represents an area about which a critical need for information has emerged. In order to fulfill the need for research, the National Center for the Study of Post Secondary Educational Supports (NCSPES) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Center on Disability Studies (CDS) conducted a national survey that administered two surveys to a national sample of more than 1,500 disability support coordinators working in postsecondary education institutions. The surveys focused on the status of educational support provision for students with disabilities in postsecondary education [21]. Their goal was to assess the types and frequency of educational supports, accommodations, and services offered to students with disabilities attending two-and four-year postsecondary education institutions. The first survey was administered in 1999 with a follow-up survey in 2001. This article compares the two surveys in order to assess the present status and measure the development of the various support services. The paper presents and compares significant changes in specific support services in postsecondary education.

Abstract:
More and more college campuses are offering one or another form of “writing-intensive” classes across the curriculum. This study investigates what students perceive to be the effects of the writing-intensive requirement at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa where students are required to take five courses designated as writing-intensive. To identify the potential composite effects of taking three or more writing-intensive classes and to identify evidence of learning that may have resulted from these multiple experiences, we interviewed 82 randomly selected seniors. Using interview transcriptions, we developed a scheme for analysis of the data. These analyses revealed several areas of self-identified improvement associated with writing-intensive classes: writing skills, knowledge acquisition, and problem-solving abilities. Students also reported that they had become better writers through interaction with their professors during the writing process, although they also reported wanting to better understand the philosophy behind writingacross- the-curriculuma nd the purposes of specific assignments. These student-reported effects of writing-intensive classes support the notion that writing can play an important part in learning.

Abstract:
With the large-scale adoption of photovoltaic (PV) systems as a renewable energy source, accurate long-term forecasting benefits both utilities and customers. However, developing forecasting models is challenging due to the need for high-quality training data at fine time intervals, such as 15 and 30 min resolutions. While sensors can track necessary data, careful analysis is required, particularly for PV systems, due to weather-induced variability. Well-developed forecasting models could optimize resource scheduling, reduce costs, and support grid stability. This study demonstrates the feasibility of a day-ahead net load forecasting model for a mixed-use office building. The model was developed using multi-year campus load and PV data from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Preprocessing techniques were applied to clean and separate the data, followed by developing two decoupled models to forecast gross load demand and PV production. A weighted-average function was then incorporated to refine the final prediction. The results show that the model effectively captures day-ahead net load trends across different load shapes and weather conditions.
