Abstract:
A significant feature of the Manobo worldview is the fact that all supernatural beings, including the supreme being, are considered to be ghoul spirits with an insatiable lust for human flesh and blood. This ghoul spirit complex is almost certainly a major reason why this Manobo group seems reluctant to embrace biblical Christianity. Seen from this background, the Christian emphasis on the sacrifice of Christ and the symbolic partaking of flesh and blood in the Lord's Supper is abhorrent to many Manobo people. This article presents a taxonomy of Manobo blood sacrifice and offers some suggestions for Christian workers who are sharing the gospel with Manobo people in this area.

Abstract:
The study attempted to determine the perception of the Manobo tribe and their effect on their living and social conditions in Barangay Sta. Ines, San Luis Agusan del Sur. The descriptive method was used in this study describes the perception among the Manobo tribe on different aspects of life: their living and social conditions. This study was conducted in barangay Sta. Ines, san Luis Agusan Del Sur. There were only 195 of them who were taken as the respondents and the researcher used the standardized questionnaire which was taken from the book of Mendez and used by the previous researchers. Hence, no validation was needed. The random sampling design was used in this study in selecting the respondents. On the level of perception among the Manobo tribe, the Manobos agree on their belief in God as supported with the total average weighted mean ranging from 2.01 to 2.73 or agree. They strongly agree to get involved in social gathering as evidenced by the total weighted mean of 2.21 or agree. They strongly agree on good aspiration as evidenced by an average weighted mean of 2.71 or agree. They agree on the family practices as supported with the average weighted mean of 2.45 or agree. They strongly agree on a good family upbringing accompanied by an average weighted mean of 2.57 or strongly agree. They also strongly agree on how to treat visitors accompanied by an average weighted mean of 2.79 or strongly agree. On the living conditions, the Manobos rank 1 that they do not depend on their main source of income but they work hard to have additional income for their family needs. They also rank 1 that their house is made up of wood, Nipa and bamboos for the shelter of their family and the Manobo rank 1 that they usually used herbal for their natural medicine but they send the sick person to the hospital for the health of the family. On the social conditions, the Manobos strongly agree to establish a neighborhood relationship with an average weighted mean of 2.78 or strongly agree. They also agree to establish kinship relationship and community relationship as indicated with an average weighted mean of 2.84 and 2.78 or strongly agree respectively. On the effect of perception on different aspects of life, belief in God, social; gathering, family practices, family upbringing, and aspiration are the best predictors in the financial condition of Manobo. Aspiration, family practices, treating visitors, wedding practices and social gatherings are the best predictors in neighborhood relationships. Wedding practices, treating visitors, aspiration, family practices, social gathering, family upbringing and belief in God as the best predictors in kinship relationship Family upbringing, aspiration, and family practices are the best predictors in community relations.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article discusses the knowledge of indigenous people about forest care, interconnectivity and maintenance of their ecological resources as well as the challenges they face among the Matigsalug-Manobo people of Marilog District, Davao City, Philippines. The researchers utilized a descriptive research design through qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews, focus-group discussions and photo-video documentation. To extract the data, the necessary permits and ethical compliance were provided by the respective parties of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 11, the Local Government Unit of Marilog District and the Manobo-Matigsalug Tribal Council Incorporated. The data gathered were analyzed through thematic analysis focusing on the dominant themes from the respondents’ narratives. The results revealed that these people’s indigenous knowledge on biodiversity conservation has been challenged by changes in the natural landscape, forest deterioration and the unintended consequences of these such as cultural loss and economic well-being. Thus, this has led to major implications of how they conserve the forest and manage their ecological resources in the current times. This calls for building a sustainable and inclusive economic livelihood for the indigenous group and other stakeholders in the Marilog district. This is a vital step in order not to compromise their economic livelihood, to retain cultural practices and to maintain their rights to manage and sustain their ecological resources. Overall, the Matigsalug-Manobos are actively negotiating the cause and effects of these socio-economic factors and are able to devise ways to use the forest and its ecological resources for their survival.

Abstract:
The 1980 Census of the Philippines (National Census and Statistics Office 1983) shows a multi-ethnic population speaking various Austronesian languages of the West Indonesian branch, which are not mutally intelligible but are clearly related to each other under various sub-groupings. The clearest divisions are the Northern Group and the Central Group, with the Northern Group situated in Northern and Central Luzon, and the Central Group located in Central and Southern Luzon, the Visayas, and parts of Mindanao (Zorc 1984). Smaller groups may be found in Eastern Mindanao (Eastern Mindanao Group), Southern Mindanao and Sulu (Sama-Bajaw Group), the area around Lake Lanao (Danao language group), Central Mindanao (the Manobo Group), and the islands of Palawan (the Palawanese Group) (cf., Pallesen 1985).

Abstract:
This ethnographic study describes the intersection between politics and education, and between discourses and practice pertaining to indigeneity among the Manobo of Tagpalico in a highland area of the Philippines. The analysis reveals the interrogation of my own personal values as I came to understand what are held to be important values by the Manobo. For example, my idealistic perceptions of indigenous leaders were challenged by what I came to appreciate about their leadership skills relative to strategic and situated participation in the context of complex relations with various outsiders. This study further explains how adults and children actively engage in social processes through which they negotiate what counts among them as significant, appropriate knowledge and learning. It discusses how global discourses of education, literacy, and indigenous peoples are spoken about in ideal terms, but enacted differently in local practice. Salient in understanding this study is an appreciation of how the role of learning in practice (Lave and Wenger, 1991) plays an important part in situated participation of actors in the educational enterprise. Against a background of local understanding about what it is important to know about – principally farming and other economic activities - and international discourses of indigeneity, schooling, literacy and development, children, parents, leaders, teachers, and nuns have appropriated and negotiated their notions of being ‘educated’ and ‘indigenous’ within a social space that is the school setting. As the Manobo explore what it means to be ‘educated’ in a politically volatile environment, they also learn to use their understanding of what it means to be ‘indigenous’ in order to negotiate their positionalities relative to external groups like the nuns, teachers, anthropologists, the military, guerrillas, and other non-Manobo groups. This study argues that learning to become educated transforms understanding of what it is to be a more valued person in the community, which altogether translates into significant differences in the children’s sense of self or personhood. Children are allowed to negotiate their social position within the family and the community through education but at the same time it also creates new forms of ‘inequality’ and ‘social separation’ (Froerer, 2011:695). For example, emerging forms of social differentiation in Tagpalico are evident in the processes through which more female members are becoming educated, bringing in a greater contribution to the family’s economic resources and thereby, developing a sense of choice about their lives as ‘individuals’ in charge, to a certain extent, over their own destinies.

Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to make visible how Christians within a minority people in the southern Philippines view the Bible conceptually as a source of spiritual authority and also how they read and interpret the Bible, both privately and within the context of community worship. Reading and studying the Bible is now universally practised by people from multitudes of cultures, a reality that has naturally engendered a great deal of interest on the part of scholars. The resultant scholarship however, has been preoccupied with the findings of the professional researcher, and little has been published which reveals how “ordinary indigenous readers” view the Bible and/or how they interpret it. Using qualitative data gathered by this author among Manobo Christians living in the hills of central Mindanao, this thesis will endeavour to redress this imbalance and provide access to the voices of ordinary Manobo readers. The thesis also makes an important contribution to the Bible’s place within Philippine Christianity. Despite the expanding readership of the Bible within the Philippines almost no research has focused on how the Bible is actually interpreted by ordinary readers. The thesis will major on the appropriation of the Bible by Christians from within the Manobo Bible Church Association of Mindanao, an association of churches born out of the church planting efforts of missionaries belonging to the Overseas Missionary Fellowship. At the centre of the thesis is an encounter between conservative evangelical missionaries and the unique culture and cosmology of the Manobo. The central argument is that the missionaries’ prototypically, evangelical doctrine of Scripture was appropriated and reconfigured by Manobo Christians in ways that reveal the persistent ability of elements of their own cosmology, and customary law, to exert influence upon their localisation of Christianity. In particular, the thesis focuses on how the localisation process has led to innovations by the Manobo on what is meant by the Bible as “spiritual authority” and to reinterpretations of significant theological themes within the evangelical gospel message. At the same time the thesis also outlines how adoption of the Christian Scriptures has redefined the position that indigenous sources of authority, such as spirit priest and village chief, now occupy within Manobo Christian communities.

Abstract:

Made available in DSpace on 2013-07-15T23:07:07Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 231709.pdf: 857899 bytes, checksum: 7fe0494c2c45ddc809e77e46525cb9ef (MD5)
This study has as purpose to analyse the process of accomplishment of the Acampamento Manoel Alves Ribeiro wich happened in 2002, in the city of Palhoça, next to the metropolitan region of Florianópolis, dealing with the way of life and the work in the outskirts of the big cities which caused the occupation of the land in the city and after it the building of the Acampamento. A group of families from a shantytown called Frei Damião, in the cities of São José and Brajarú, in Palhoça, organized with the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) to settle on BR-101. Without work, suffering with the violence and the weak perspective of future in their lifes, these families wanted to search a better possibility for them and to escape from the misery in which they lived. To accomplish this research it was used a great survey of books and documents, beyond interviews with the representatives of the main organizations that help and organize the Acampamento including MST´s leaders, popular movements and urban unions. This experience, to MST, was new and had many problems from all kinds which the Movimento was not prepared to face in his history of fighting against the difficulties to organize workers that lived in the cities during a long time. Moreover, the Acampamento Manoel Alves Ribeiro reveals the big poverty (big poor areas) that exist in' the great metropolitan region of Florianópolis, and MST as a social movement present itself as a possibility to organize the unemployed workers.

Abstract:
The program is organized in a series of volumes that are interconnected, and that can function independently or jointly, a feature that gives the building a great versatility of use. The use of the self-compacting concrete (sprayed from the lower parts of the walls and roofs) to configure the walls has allowed to make them compact and homogeneous and has also allowed to resolve, with a single material, both the enclosure and the structure of the whole complex.

Abstract:
