Abstract:
The study provides a description of the phonological features projected in Manobo, which is spoken in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, as an effort to monitor the status and vitality of the language. In eliciting the segmental and suprasegmental features, the respondents translated the questionnaire, a pre-determined word list of Cebuano vocabularies and sentences, and it was documented through audio-recording. The transcribed words were rated through International Phonetic Alphabet symbols. For the suprasegmental features, those focused on length, stress, and intonation in statement form and in answering WH/Yes-No questions. The study identified a total of 42 phonemic units in the Manobo language’s phonetic code: nine (9) vocoids, four (4) vocoid chains, 15 contoids, and four (4) contoid-clusters, and 10 supra-segmental phonemes. Also, factors such as age somewhat affect their phonological features. Native speakers were observed borrowing words from the dominant languages –Bisaya, Tagalog, and English, clipping some of the native words and code-switching to other languages when speaking. Manobo language is still used in home and community; however, it is not being sustained in the formal institution. Finally, the paper echoes the call for future studies of Manobo morphophonemic features of various Manobo speakers.

The 1980 Census of the Philippines (National Census and Statistics Office 1983) shows a multi-ethnic population speaking various Austronesian languages of the West Indonesian branch, which are not mutally intelligible but are clearly related to each other under various sub-groupings. The clearest divisions are the Northern Group and the Central Group, with the Northern Group situated in Northern and Central Luzon, and the Central Group located in Central and Southern Luzon, the Visayas, and parts of Mindanao (Zorc 1984). Smaller groups may be found in Eastern Mindanao (Eastern Mindanao Group), Southern Mindanao and Sulu (Sama-Bajaw Group), the area around Lake Lanao (Danao language group), Central Mindanao (the Manobo Group), and the islands of Palawan (the Palawanese Group) (cf., Pallesen 1985).

Abstract:
This study looked into the meanings of objects used in peace ritual, how these objects communicate the intention of parties involved, and how the ritual constitutes ideology on peace among the Obo Manobo people. Particularly, it is a semiotic reading of the Obo Manobo’s ritual for peace which employed Halliday’s social and functional approach to language and Lemke’s semiotic thinking. The peace ritual is found to be a semiotic system that embodies the values, symbols, and ideas of the Obo Manobos as a group. It is a multimodal communicative event that comprises various integrating elements to language, thoughts, feelings and aspirations, dramatizes collective representations, encodes the culture of the Obo Manobos and, therefore, conveys ideologies on peace. As embedded in the ritual, the Obo Manobos believe that peace is consequential effect of how they observe customary laws of the tribe, and disregarding this will result to punishment and chaos.

Abstract:
The primary objective of this investigation is to scrutinize the utilization of the Indonesian language in outdoor media within Manado City, focusing on physical attributes, linguistic aspects, and the general application of the language in this specific context. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study centers its analysis on outdoor media installations situated in Manado, utilizing a sample size of 10 randomly selected images. The data collection process involves two main steps: firstly, gathering information on language usage in public spaces throughout Manado City, and subsequently, selecting ten data points that represent seven key aspects of Indonesian language prioritization. The findings of the study reveal two noteworthy outcomes: firstly, public space managers exhibit a preference for foreign languages over Indonesian in their language usage; and secondly, deviations from language rules are apparent, particularly in terms of spelling and word choice. The examination of Indonesian language use in outdoor media within Manado City indicates a presence of linguistic errors that defy established rules. Physically, there is a fusion of languages, comprising both Indonesian and foreign languages. While the language structure adheres to rules, imperfections persist in spelling and word selection. Despite these challenges, there is a positive trend in language typography, signaling an improvement in this specific aspect. In essence, the study underscores the existence of linguistic shortcomings in the public use of the Indonesian language in Manado City, encompassing discrepancies in language mixture, structural errors, and evolving typography practices

Obo-Manobo, one of the tribes in Mindanao Philippines, inhabiting some municipalities in the Province of North Cotabato, has ethnic or indigenous language which is not sufficiently analyzed and documented. To account varieties in language and to come up with the glossary of terms, the researcher used the Metalinguistic knowledge from the interviews, focus group discussions, observations and translation of the Swadesh Word List and from the lexical databases such as the word lists of Obo-Manobo accounted by the SIL. The study revealed distinct variations in the Obo-Manobo language from the culture bearers of Kidapawan City, Magpet and President Roxas in the Province of North Cotabato. Obo-Manobo has lexical varieties in the way they name and describe things, person, places, events and concepts (noun and adjectives); use the main verb, prepositions and conjunctions. These are all accounted in the glossary of terms – the output of this study.

Abstract:
Awareness of the students in the pragmatics attached to language is crucial to communication success within classroom settings. Therefore, students might devise strategies to mitigate threats that can affect interlocutors’ engagement in communication. However, cultural and social factors can also influence how people communicate; hence, students from different backgrounds have nuances in the language used. This study is aimed at determining the politeness strategies utilized by Manobo students in their interaction in a classroom in a public school in Kidapawan City, Philippines. Using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategy framework, the findings reveal that the politeness strategies used by Manobo students in the classroom with their Manobo and non-Manobo teachers were positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on-record, and off record. On the other hand, the politeness strategies among Manobo students were positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald-on record. Hence, the Manobo students have different politeness strategies depending on their relationship with the interlocutors in the classroom interaction. Politeness is relevant and essential in education, such as classroom teaching and learning practice. With a deeper understanding of its role in the academe, there could be more significant ways of improving the learning atmosphere.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to assess the political life of the seven tribes of Bukidnon, namely, Bukidnon, Higaonon, Talaandig, Matigsalug, Tigwahanon, Umayamnon, and Manobo. The study utilized focus group discussion involving one tribal community of each tribe mostly located proximate to the poblacion. Interview of key informants, usually the village chief (datu or bae and members of the council) was employed to generate data on the ethno-political life of the tribes. A survey questionnaire was also used to gather quantifiable data. The findings of the study showed that the main functions of the datu are to maintain the customary laws and social order in the community and promote good relationships with other tribal communities; and to arbitrate internal conflicts. As datu, he should possess wisdom, knowledge of traditional lore and mythology, eloquence, skill in euphemistic language, fairness in judging or arbitrating disputes, and possession of some wealth and property which he willingly shares with the whole community. The indigenous tribes have centralized form of political structure and headed by either a datu or a bae except for the Manobos whose village chief is a timuay or sultan. Internally-caused conflicts are readily resolved by the datu who is highly revered by his villagers while externally-caused conflicts are harder to resolve. Murder and wife-stealing used to be the principal cause of conflict among tribal members. Currently, however, the conflict is already related to land ownership. Keywords: indigenous tribes, datu/bae (chieftain), autonomy, resolution, dictatorship, poverty

This study set out to find out how participants at The Bridge Education Manado felt about task-based learning (TBL) as a teaching strategy. The poll findings showed that participants generally agreed, highlighting their favorable opinions of TBL's efficiency in fostering student-centered and interesting language learning experiences that promotes a laid-back learning environment where learners' needs and interests are engaged. They acknowledged how language skills were included into TBL, highlighting how well it covered lesson retrieval and made it easier to remember earlier classes and resources as well as to improve language learning experiences and valued their significance and relevance to the actual world. These favorable opinions highlight the usefulness of TBL as a method of instruction that adheres to the fundamentals of communicative language learning and promotes successful language learning outcomes. It is clear from the survey results that TBL is well-liked by students at The Bridge Education Manado. These findings have effects on how the institution teaches languages. First and foremost, it is essential to keep supporting TBL as a pedagogical strategy and to offer ongoing assistance and chances for professional growth to teachers so they can use TBL techniques in the classroom. They would better comprehend TBL ideas, techniques, and material production as a result of this. Collaboration among educators can also encourage the sharing of creative TBL implementation ideas and best practices. Abstract:
The phenomenon of teaching English and Indonesian language, especially in North Sulawesi, as a second language overlaps, where some argue that teaching Indonesian language should come first so that children will not forget Indonesian language or, in other words, children will master their national language. In this study, the method used is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The sample used as respondents by the researcher is parents in North Sulawesi who have children who can speak English and Indonesian, in addition, to their mother tongue (Manado language/Regional language), and the respondents consisted of 10 parents. The researcher used questionnaires to gather parents' perceptions of whether the children should be taught English or Indonesian Language first. However, some people think teaching English is very important because mastering English as an international language is necessary. English is suitable for children as their second language, but teaching Indonesian language as the national language is also very important. Therefore teaching between these two languages must be balanced so that it does not only English that can be mastered by children or not only Indonesian language.

Abstract:
The Dumut languages Mandobo, South Wambon and North Wambon are a subgroup of the Awyu-Dumut family. They form a dialect chain that represents stages of the development from clause conjoining with independent verb forms to clause chaining with dependent verb forms that express switch-reference. South Wambon represents the first stage in which there is coordination reduction of tense and subject person-number suffixes in thematic continuity conditions. This process created three verb types: fully finite verbs; semi-finite verbs and non-finite verbs. Coordination reduction leaves the coordinating conjunctions intact and this explains the presence of coordinators with all verb types, including dependent verbs. Coordination reduction creates verb forms that signal subject continuity but it does not create subject discontinuity forms and there is no switch-reference in South Wambon. However, the introduction of dependent subject continuity forms gives South Wambon speakers a choice in subject continuity conditions between dependent forms and independent verb forms. Since speakers prefer dependent forms under these conditions, a frequency pattern emerges that associates independent forms with subject discontinuity conditions and that sets the stage for the development of medial verb forms and switch-reference. North Wambon and Mandobo represent the second stage in which subject discontinuity forms develop. North Wambon transforms conjoined semi-finite independent verbs into two types of special medial verb forms that express switch-reference. In Mandobo any medially occurring independent verb form is reinterpreted as a Different Subject form. The two-stage hypothesis revives the coordination reduction theory of Haiman (1983a) as an explanation for the origin of (certain) switch-reference systems by viewing coordination reduction as an explanation of SS forms only. In this way, the two-stage theory overcomes the problems of limited applicability that Roberts (1997: 190) noted for the original theory of Haiman (1983a).

Abstract:
The practice of mother tongue in teaching kindergarten and primary levels are of great help to strengthen the foundation of early years of education in improving pupils’ basic learning skills. It is designed to implement learner-centered education from the beginning of the education ladder and this is apparent in a rising number of educational programs that utilize this approach. As such, little is known about how a national policy for MTB-MLE can be disseminated into contextualized local schools. To capture the breadth of conceptual and implementation issues, purposive sampling was used in this study to determine the teachers, tribal parents, and leader perspectives. Focus group discussion was done using transcript-based analysis to gather first-hand information. Findings derived and identified four main themes, namely (1) teachers’ unpreparedness of MTB-MLE implementation, (2) teachers’ difficulty in delivering MTB-MLE, (3) fear of Manobo Language endangerment, and (4) inadequacy of contextualized and indigenized IMs. Hence, it is commended that these issues must be addressed efficiently to shift the perspective of the teachers in using the Manobo Language in their school. The implementation needs better encouragement, support, and motivation for the teachers to embrace the challenges brought by MTB-MLE with an optimistic perspective to address certain gaps in its implementation.

Abstract:
This paper will prove the existence of colloquial Makassar Indonesian (CMI) by showing its syntactic characteristics based on the use of personal pronoun affixes. This is very interesting and important because in general colloquial Indonesian languages are spoken in other cities in Indonesia, for example Jakarta, Manado, Ambon, etc. is a subsystem of the Indonesian language (hereinafter abbreviated as IND), but CMI is really a subsystem or subvariant of the Makassar language (MAK), the mother tongue of the Makassarese people. Therefore, it is not easy for Makassar newcomers to master this CMI. To master it, they must first learn the basic rules of MAK syntax. The fundamental thing in this case is the change in language typology, namely CMI has been proven to have adopted the V-S-O (Verb-Subject-Object) typology of MAK. Meanwhile, IND has the S-V-O (Subject-Predicate-Object) typology. This happened because there was language contact between MAK and Malay (now IND), a language which became the forerunner to the birth of IND as the national language and the state language of the Republic of Indonesia. In this case, at first Makassar city residents tried to use Malay, but with MAK syntactic interference. Gradually this form of interference became the entry point for the borrowing of the MAK syntactic subsystem in the IND speeches of Makassar city residents. IND utterances with the characteristics of MAK syntax then become the characteristics of CMI, which has now reached the level of integration and convergence.

The observation was used to observe the speakers of Manado Malay in using polite speech in daily social activities, whereas an interview was used by the researcher to questioning the informant about the use of polite speech in social interaction. This technique is complemented with listening, proficient, and note-taking techniques. The researcher plays a role as a key instrument who collects and analyzes the data. The source of data is the native speakers of Manado Malay who do interact in various places. Three informants who master Manado Malay were chosen. Techniques of analyzing data consist of 1) data reduction, simplified data collection, 2) data presentation, simplified data presented, categorized based on form and meaning, 3) verification, the data that has been presented were checked once more to ensure the accuracy according to the expected data, 4) conclusions, answering the predetermined problem formulations. The results showed that the social dimension, especially the solidarity scale, is a consideration for Manado Malay speakers in realizing polite speech, as well as when to use informal variants and when to use formal ones. The relationship among speakers has made them create the appropriate language choices, but language ethics that embody politeness remain a consideration. In various social interactions, occupations, religious meetings, associations, and family interactions, it turns out that Manado Malay people realize the politeness of speaking by changing command sentences into declarative sentences and asking along with the use of a flat intonation when speaking. The consideration of solidarity is the reason they speak politely, in addition to the status and formality scale.

Abstract:
This paper explores phrase-length-related alternations in the association of tones to positions in metrical structure in two melodic constructions of Spanish. An imitation-and-completion task eliciting (a) the low–falling–rising contour and (b) the circumflex contour on intonation phrases (IPs) of one, two, and three prosodic words revealed that, although the focus structure and pragmatic context is constant across conditions, phrases containing one prosodic word differ in their nuclear (i.e. final) pitch accents and edge tones from phrases containing more than one prosodic word. For contour (a), short intonation phrases (e.g. [Manolo]IP) were produced with a low accent followed by a high edge tone (L* H% in ToBI notation), whereas longer phrases (e.g. [El hermano de la amiga de Manolo]IP‘Manolo's friend's brother’) had a low accent on the first stressed syllable, a rising accent on the last stressed syllable, and a low edge tone (L* L+H* L%). For contour (b), short phrases were produced with a high–rise (L+H* ¡H%), whereas longer phrases were produced with an initial accentual rise followed by an upstepped rise–fall (L+H* ¡H* L%). These findings imply that the common practice of describing the structure of intonation contours as consisting of a constant nuclear pitch accent and following edge tone is not adequate for modeling Spanish intonation. To capture the observed melodic alternations, we argue for clearer separation between tones and metrical structure, whereby intonational tones do not necessarily have an intrinsic culminative or delimitative function (i.e. as pitch accents or as edge tones). Instead, this function results from melody-specific principles of tonal–metrical association.

Abstract:
The rapid development of technology has increased the demand for information technology-based learning media, which is becoming increasingly necessary. E-Learning, also known as information technology-based learning media, is changing how education is delivered from a traditional to a digital format. At this time, the world is being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is causing restrictions on activities and gatherings and causing difficulties in lectures. Electronic learning, the most widely used learning medium by all groups, is seen as a solution to keep the learning going in higher education, from primary to post-secondary levels of education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of E-Learning as a learning medium in the Indonesian language education department of universities following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis to implement Indonesian language education learning by taking samples from lecturers who teach Indonesian courses at the Manado State Islamic Institute and Manado State Christian Institute. According to the study's findings, using information technology as a medium of learning in Indonesian language education courses through e-learning is beneficial, particularly in light of the country's ban on face-to-face instruction. Then, the university should continue to develop e-learning to improve the ease and quality of the teaching and learning process, increase student learning effectiveness, and broaden its reach.

Abstract:
This study is conducted to analyse the masculinity in Jorge Gutierrezs The Book of Life. The study is also conducted to discuss the variety of masculine characteristics within The Book of Life. The film takes place in a little Mexican town called San Angel where the protagonist, Manolo Sanchez, must choose between his family heritage to become the next Sanchez bullfighter or to become himself in his own image. The main objectives of this study are to explore the characters environmental structure, to distinguish the different characteristics of masculinity between them, and to relate masculinity with bullfighting in The Book of Life. This study uses gender and film approach. Gender approach is used particularly on masculinity since it is the primary discussion in this thesis while film approach is used to aid the researcher to determine where the masculinity is shown in The Book of Life. The method of this research is conducted through film and script analysis. Specific shots and lines from the script are analysed then discussed with the theories regarding masculinity and film. The result shows that Manolos masculine characteristics predominantly lies on Male Sex Role Strain, homosexual masculinity, and imposed environment. Meanwhile, Joaquin and Carlos shares the same masculine characteristics; they dominate the Male Sex Role Identity in all four themes and have the same hegemonic masculinity. Though their environment is nothing alike, Joaquins selected environment and Carloss constructed environment proved to be more masculine than Manolo. From these, the relations between the masculine characteristics particularly on Plecks Male Sex Role Identity and bullfighting shows that the various mise-en-scne displays the facial expressions of Manolo and Carlos frequently on scenes where the activity of bullfighting occurred. The framing language is dominated between MS (Medium Shot) and ECU (Extreme Close-Up) shot. Lastly, the continuity editing in The Book of Life is more dominant in the 180o Rule and Shot/Reverse Shot. Keywords: masculinity, gender study, film study

Abstract:
This study aims at investigating and portraying learners’ engagement with language in the learning process. It further shares the influence of the engagement upon the success of language acquisition. This study is methodologically qualitative. The semi-structured interview is implemented based upon the attempts to elaborate seven main questions and several follow-up questions. The respondents are from Manado, North Sulawesi. They are learners whose score above 500 in TOEFL ITP or equivalence to IELTS above 6.0 as the qualification of successful English language learners. They took the test in different institutions such as the Golden Gate and the British Council. The data are then analyzed and interpreted in triangulation. The research findings showed that the engagement has shaped the success of the learners’ language acquisition. The engagement comes in the forms of emotional, behavioral and cognitive ones. Such engagements take place from the silent period to communicative competence period of acquisition. It is further found out that to ensure the success of language acquisition, the three models of engagement have to be persistently and consistently practiced and developed.
