Abstract:
“The article deals with the changes which the concept of literature underwent in 16th century France. The late medieval concept of poetry as fabula, allegorical fiction, is replaced in the middle of the century (by T. Sébillet, J. Peletier du Mans, Ronsard) by the Platonic idea of an innate divine gift. The idea of poetry-philosophy describing all possible phenomena of the universe henceforth serves as a prerequisite for the creation of works perfect from a formal point of view. The idea of the relation between poetry and rhetoric as well as the models to be imitated by the poet changes. Lists of canonical authors turn into a poetic topos as early as the late Middle Ages, but under the influence of Pleiades’ theories there is an increased interest in the figure of the “great author”, a symbol of national language and poetry, whose emergence means the achievement of the national culture of the Golden Age. Lists, however, are transformed at the end of the century into the first attempts to describe the totality of French literature (Lacroix du Maine and A. Duverdier’s “Libraries of France”) and its history (a work on ancient poets by C. Fauchet and Book VII of E. Pasquier’s “Inquiries into France”). In the Renaissance disputes and polemics becomes more visible the outlines of both the literary canon, which was embodied in the 17th century, and the historical approach to literature.

Abstract:
This chapter proposes that the print shop emerges in the sixteenth century as a key site for the production of literary criticism. Of particular interest is the figure of the printer’s corrector, an expert in error and artisan of precision whose task is to discover and amend faults before a text goes into print. Taking as an exemplary case the French poet, literary critic, and orthographic reformer Jacques Peletier du Mans (1517–1582/3)—who maintained close relationships with his printers and was employed as a corrector in the workshop of Jean de Tournes in Lyon—the chapter examines how the practice of correction and the mechanical ethos of printing inform early meta-poetic work in France, including Peletier’s seminal translation of Horace’s Ars poetica and his own Art Poëtiquɇ of 1555.

Abstract:
This chapter traces a poetics of emergent meaning in sözlü Roman oyun havası from static iconicity drawn from çingene references in kanto songs through musicians’ creative incorporation of improvised poetic mani and shouted hocali forms. While expressing communal reactions to specifically Roman experiences, the inclusion of patricularistic references from mani and hocali inscribed revised social distinctions along gendered, generational, class, and status lines. Through musical analysis and observations of musicians creating new songs, I demonstrate how musicians drew on keriz-style improvisations to expand melodic repertoires for song settings in response to the increased demand for new and relevant dance tunes. Commercial circulation and copyrighting of these songs also increased tensions between artists themselves and studio heads, thus reshaped community-based practices of borrowing and performing. The chapter ends with narrations of three performance events to illustrate the dynamic relationship between an ongoing metaphoricity of sound to a mimesis of enlarged presence and pluralized identities.

Abstract:
The introduction demonstrates the continuing popularity of Tasso’s troubled life and epic poem in England up to the late nineteenth century via a fictional conversation in George Eliot’s final novel. It then gives an overview of knowledge of Tasso’s works and life in England by the end of the sixteenth century, using John Eliot’s translated comments in his Ortho-epia Gallica (1593) as a starting point. The final part of the introduction considers Milton’s knowledge of Tasso’s apparent madness in the mid-seventeenth century, probably acquired from his first-hand acquaintance with the great Italian poet’s last patron and earliest biographer, Giovanni Battista Manso.

Abstract:
This essay examines the role of the place of the ‘encyclopaedia’, or circle of learning, in writing on poetics by humanist authors from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, from Italy and France and in neo-Latin and the vernacular. It explores two questions: what is the relationship between Renaissance appropriations of the encyclopaedia as an ideal and contemporary views on how poetic competence is achieved? And how does the place of the encyclopaedia interact with other poetic commonplaces in circulation in pan-European Renaissance culture? Comparative analysis of occurrences, overt and implicit, of the commonplace in writing by Joachim Du Bellay, Cristoforo Landino, Marco Girolamo Vida, and Jacques Peletier Du Mans reveals that the circle of learning is an important touchstone for positions taken in longstanding debates that see Neoplatonic and Horatian approaches to poetics variously opposed, appropriated, and reconciled.
