Abstract:
Today in the digital age, with our advances in modern technology and communication, there are additional stressors for our military personnel and Veterans. Constant dangers exist both on and off the battlefield, unlike prior wars that had clearly-defined war zones. In addition, medical advances have assisted in saving the lives of many more gravely injured troops than ever previously possible. As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan come to an end, large numbers of service men and women are returning home with multiple injuries. This group of Veterans has significantly higher rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury than ever before reported. Although existing PTSD therapies have been found to be highly effective for many Veterans, there is a substantial minority unsatisfactorily treated. Mantram repetition, an innovative, complementary, evidence-based treatment, is proving to be successful for these new Veterans. When used regularly it helps with “road rage, impatience, anger, frustration, and being out of control.” A mantram is a brief, sacred word or phrase that embodies divine power or the greatest positive energy one can imagine (Easwaran, 2008a). Mantram repetition is a simple, quick, personal, portable, and private complementary practice that may be used as an adjunct to current treatments for PTSD. Growing research evidence supports mantram repetition's value for dissemination and adoption in the 21st century. This chapter summarizes Mantram Program research conducted from 2003 to 2014. It describes the health-related benefits of the Mantram Program in various populations. The current research focuses on benefits for managing psychological distress and promoting quality of life in Veterans. Future areas for research are suggested.

Abstract:
Background: Sattu is a traditional and well known functional food in India. It is consumed as a refreshing drink during summers. In Ayurveda, Sattu has been described as Saktu. According to classical texts of Ayurveda, Powder of roasted and dehusked Yava (barley) is known as Saktu. Liking and disliking for any food article depends on senses of consumer. For deciding the consumer’s choice toward the food products, sensory parameters followed by the nutritional properties are required to be considered. Aim and objectives: To standardize recipe of Sattu-Mantha and sensory evaluation of Sattu-Manha. Material and methods: In present study, sensory evaluation of Yava (Barley) Sattu prepared by two different methods has been carried out. Sattu was served in the form of Mantha. In this study scoring for different sensory parameters was done by using 9-point Hedonic scale (Lawless and Klein, 1991). Results and Conclusion: On the bases of scores given to different sensory parameters, Sattu-Mantha prepared by both the methods is accepted by assessors but Sattu-Mantha prepared by using sugar powder was much liked by assessors as compared to Sattu-Mantha prepared by using Jaggery powder.

Abstract:
At the commencement of this study all data on Manta rays were combined under the single species Manta birostris, and there was little information available on their ecology. Manta rays were frequently reported throughout the Maldives, and tourist manta-watching is an economically important activity in this region although no previous study of manta numbers or movements had been made. An individual identification method was developed based on the unique ventral marking pattern of each animal in order to record the identity and frequency of visit by mantas to the numerous cleaning and feeding areas. Information on sex, estimated size, and the markings pattern were collated in an Access database along with date/time and location of each animal sighting. Mantas were also observed and recorded photographically and on video being cleaned by cleaner fish and during feeding activity so that typical behaviours could be investigated. Analysis of the ID records and sightings data of over 1900 individually identified mantas has shown that the smaller reef-associated Manta alfredi is the predominant species in the Maldives. The majority of mantas (~74%) have been sighted only once, but this is probably due to a relatively low survey rate, with the remainder re-sighted between one and 34 times. Individual mantas which were re-sighted appeared confined to an atoll, visiting a number of cleaning stations around the atoll and migrating between east and west sides so as to be predominantly on the leeside to the prevailing monsoon. Only ~1% of mantas were reported in more than one different atoll with 270 km being the greatest distance between sites where an individual manta was reported, a range not previously recorded. A population study estimated populations of around 537 mantas in small atolls and 811 in large atolls. The population was ~65% female, and females were significantly larger than males. Reproductive periodicity appears low with only 26% of likely mature females ever being sighted pregnant over a 5 year period. Females which were reported pregnant produced offspring less frequently than every two years, on average. This low reproductive rate might put this small population at risk if local fishing practices changed. i The behaviour of mantas at cleaning stations was investigated as well as the identity and abundance of cleaner fish species. Feeding strategies are described and appear to show that feeding is a co-operative behaviour in mantas. These preliminary behavioural studies provide early insights into the ecology of this species.

Abstract:
The thesis paper Design takes place in our lives, naturally and sometimes invisibly, but how can we become alert to its impact on us? How can we as designers elaborate on our role in creating tools for people’s lives? A handmade metal wire toy I found in my parents’ house made me discover the world of mandalas; a Buddhistic symbol and a tool for spiritual enlightenment. Mandalas speak of the relation between us and the world and balance between body and mind. In my Master’s project, the act of playing is explored as a tool for altering perspectives on our physical environment. Inspired by the mandala, an alternative approach to functional form is visualized, connecting our bodies and minds in closer relation to a playful and imaginative state of being. By investigating our physical environment and encouraging interaction, new mantras for our everyday lives may be created. The design process Using the metal wire mandala as my starting point, I have explored spatial forms with possibilities in transformation. Different combinations of the same parts; half circles of bent metal wire which connected can move and therefore change the other shape of the construction, creates different kinds of space with more or less clear practical application. The ambition of this project has been to investigate the metal construction as foundation and frame for textile in and as architecture; building a whole space, as visual room dividers indoor or outdoor and as sun screen. The design is based on transformation and reuse of the same parts to build new forms. The textiles have been designed and produced with the metal construction as frame. The textiles are knitted with nylon thread, hand dyed and mounted onto the construction. The technique of partial knitting makes it possible to create the round shapes with an even elasticity in all directions, and an open centre for the next piece overlapping. When knitting, no waste material I generated since nothing is cut away after production. Using punch cards, patterns and structure is added to the surface. The need to create smaller spaces within a larger space is present in many places; indoors as well as out doors. The public environment in which we live, controls and shapes our lives. By creating more intimate sites, with the possibility for visual and mental rest, we can come closer one another and hold other types of conversations. This will create new patterns of behaviour; new mantras for everyday life. During the Konstfack Degree Exhibition 2013, I displayed one of the possible forms in full scale with textiles, along side a smaller size model of the same shape and one other possible shape with closer resemblance to the original wire toy. On site in the exhibition, visitors could meet and try the space in a real setting.<br>Thesis uppsats Formgivning sker i våra liv, naturligt och ibland osynligt, men hur kan vi bli uppmärksamma på dess inverkan på oss?

Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to various aspects of seismic attenuation in the Earth's mantle and the consequences on the mantle structure. The challenge is to better understand the attenuation mechanisms, as well as the measurements that can be done, in order to improve the published radial profiles of attenuation and in fine the interpretation of tomographic models.I focus on two examples of attenuation mechanisms, belonging to two kinds of attenuation: the intrinsic attenuation related to the absorption by the medium of a part of the seismic energy then irreversibly dissipated as heat, and the extrinsic attenuation related to the dispersion of the seismic energy by the medium. In the first case, I investigate the effect of phase transitions upon seismic attenuation. Applying the thermo-mechanical model developped by Ricard et al., 2012, to calculate the attenuation of seismic waves due to the phase transition only and comparing the obtained values to published measurements, I succeed in constraining the kinetics of a mantle phase transition. In the second case, I test the seismic anisotropy as a mechanism of extrinsic attenuation, the aim being to find a statistical distribution of anisotropy orientation and layer thicknesses that can reproduce the observed quasi-frequency independence of Q in seismology and laboratory experiments (Knopoff, 1964), and which is, today, only explained by an ad-hoc model (Liu, 1976).Finally, I was interested in measuring the seismic attenuation on real seismograms. After having tested the method of the instantaneous frequency (Ford et al., 2012), I applied it to seismic records sampling the mantle below Central America and Alaska. These measurements are then inverted for a radial profile of shear attenuation which reveals the existence of an attenuating zone in the lower mantle. I also show that these attenuation anomalies are likely to be of chemical origin

Abstract:
(...)<br>Melting processes play a key role in the Earth’s evolution. In the early stages of theEarth's formation, large amounts of heat were released from (i) gravitational energy from coremantlesegregation, (ii) radiogenic decay and (iii) collisions with large-scale impactors (suchas the Moon-forming impact). This led to extensive mantle melting with eventual formation ofa magma ocean. Then, chemical segregation between the different terrestrial reservoirs resultedfrom the complex processes of mantle crystallization. These mechanisms were primarilycontrolled by thermal evolution of partially molten mantle. Partial melting however may stilloccurs today in different mantle regions. Evidences of low velocities zones (LVZ) in the uppermantle have been reported by different seismological and magneto-telluric studies, at a depthranging from 80 km down to the 410 km seismic discontinuity. The reduction in seismic wavevelocities reported is also consistent with the occurrence of partial melting. However, thismatter remains the source of a vivid debate. The experimental studies addressing melting of mantle materials show that the presentdaytemperature is not sufficient to induce melting of the bulk peridotitic or pyrolitic mantle,at all depths throughout upper mantle, transition zone and lower mantle. Melting can still arisein certain conditions, i.e. (i) in presence of significant amounts of volatile elements, such aswater or CO2, because it can decrease the melting temperature of silicate rocks by hundreds ofdegrees or (ii) for significant compositional changes, e.g. when the oceanic crust is subductedin the mantle. In this study, we performed melting experiment on a homogeneous glass withchondritic composition, a proxy for the primitive Earth’s mantle after core segregation. Weperformed in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and in situ impedance spectroscopymeasurements to detect the onset of melting during the experiments in a multi anvil apparatus,at pressures up to 25 GPa, in order to determine the solidus temperature of the primitive uppermantle. Our results show that previous studies overestimated the solidus by approximately 250K. The implication for a lower solidus are manifold. Firstly, partial melting could take place inthe mantle today at lower temperatures than previously believed, especially when volatileelements such as H are present. The variation of the solidus temperature as a function of watercontent was therefore calculated using the cryoscopic relation reported in previous studies. Ourresults show that 500-600 ppm of water are required to depress the solidus temperature enoughto cross the mantle geotherm at depths in which LVL are observed, which is compatible withthe reported maximum water storage capability of the upper mantle.Another major implication concerns the early state of the upper mantle. Mantletemperatures 200-300 K higher than today, as suggested from the composition of ancient nonarcbasalts and komatiites, would induce partial melting at depths from ~200 to ~400 km. Thus,a shell of partially molten material could have persisted in the upper mantle for long geologicaltimes. Such weak layer could have decoupled the convection in upper and lower part of themantle, possibly disabling the establishment of modern tectonic during the Archean. Then, upon secular mantle cooling, the final mantle crystallization at mid upper-mantle depths wouldhave drastically modified the mantle dynamics, inducing global mantle convection. In this work, the melting properties of the basaltic crust subducted in the lower mantleis also presented. Subduction of the oceanic lithosphere is thought to be a major responsiblefor mantle heterogeneities. At shallow depths, slabs undergo dehydration, which induces partialmelting of the mantle wedge and arc magmatism. (...)

Abstract:
Dans ce mémoire, nous présentons des modèles dynamiques préliminaires de cristallisation dans le cas univariant<br>Early in the history of terrestrial planet, heat of accreation, radioactive deacay and core-mantle segratation may have melted the silicate mantle significantly. Magma ocean evolution depends on both physical properties of materials at relevant P-T conditions and the complex dynamics of a convecting cristallizing mantle. Present deep Earth mantle structures might be direclty linked to the crystallization of a potential magma ocean. We propose a complete thermodynamic model of the solid-liquid equilibrium in the MgO-FeO-SiO2 system which allows to compute self-consistenltly crystallization sequence at deep mantle conditions. The present study shows that, at thermodynamic equilibrium, the first solids that crystallize in the deep mantle are lighter than the liquid as they are more Mg-rich. This further enriches the melt in iron and this residual melt becomes much denser than the solid phase. Both the anti-freeze effect of iron and its high density suggest a mantle crystallization scenario similar to that described in Labrosse et al. (2007) where the ULVZ are iron rich and very fusible remnants of a primordial basal magma ocean. In addition, we have developped a multiphase convection code accounting for solid-liquid phase change, compaction and fractionnal cristallization. This mechanical model is dedicated to the investigation of the effects of various temperature profile and solid liquid density cross-overs on the dynamics of a cristallizing mantle. In this thesis, we show preliminary models illustrating the effect of chemical density contrasts between melt and solid in the case of univariant crystallization

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

My essay focuses on the correspondences sent to the Gonzaga of Mantua and received and preserved in the Mantuan chancery during the 14th century. The broad range of correspondences gathered in the Mantuan archives covers almost all the north and central Italy, from Tuscany to the Val d’Adige, from Genoa to Venice. Its quantity and variety open the gate to a most needed investigation of the epistolary forms of political and diplomatic communication in the 14th century, therefore fostering a better understanding of this crucial period, squeezed between the better known communal Duecento and princely Quattrocento.

Abstract:
The Javanese mantra, is a communicative act, and a spiritual dialogue. During the mantra ritual, the shaman Orang Pinter and supplicant receiving the intervention select become equal agents, as they intervene for change in the cultural and spiritual disposition of the supplicant. But in this paper. The presentation discusses ethnographic work over 10 years during which over 1500 mantras were documented throughout central to east Java, Indonesia, To effect the documentation process, I engaged with a range of communities and individuals throughout Java, that is, Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya, Alas Purwo, Salatiga, Bali, and other localities, Spiritual interventions were witnessed, and we suggest religious affiliation tells only part of the story. Drawing on frameworks of symbolic interactionism, and phenomenological nominalism, the synopsis discusses how a poetic discourse analysis of mantras can describe a system employed by these shamans and the supplicants to discursively facilitate the spiritual process, by altering the dissociative state of the supplicant. The talk concludes by presenting a model for the mantra in Java, and possibly in other global regions. Within this model, several overlapping processes mediate the drawing on cultural symbolisms, and overlap in strategic designs, to to effect change in the supplicant. The paper draws on work by Rebecca Seligman, who has conducted similar ethnographic and theoretical work in the South American context.

Abstract:
The heritage of Yogyakarta and other urban centres throughout Java, Indonesia, is such that their religions have become highly syncretic (Geertz). Here, animism, Hindu roots, and Islam, have been mixed to fashion modern spiritual practices. One of these is the Japa Mantra, a type of prayer used as a spell as white (and sometimes black) magic. The practitioners of the Japa mantra employ Javanese poetics to shape its poetics, in the belief that these mantras are magical and convey the will of deities and other spirits, who empathie with people and whose will allows these spiritual requests to amterialize. This paper presents an early stage in describing the symbolisms and poetics of the Japa Mantra, through the documenting of several hundred practitioners, priests, and others, in Yogyakarta and other urban centres. The analaysis of the poetics of the Japa Mantra practiced by these communities draws on symbolic anthropology, and describes junctures between spiritual speech communities and symbolic representations of a modern Java guided by a sustained heritage, in the face of an institutionalized Islam.

Abstract:
This paper evaluates how new information influences families applica- tions and assignment outcomes in elementary school choice settings. Specifi- cally, using a multi-country RCT based in Tacna, Peru and Manta, Ecuador, we examine the effect of providing personalized information on schooling alternatives and placement risk. We find that applicants who received feed- back on placement risk and a suggestion of new schools add more schools to their applications and were more likely to include recommended schools than other alternatives available. Interestingly, the project implemented in Manta, Ecuador had only marginal effects for all outcomes. The main differ- ence across implementations was the inclusion of outreach and information provision through an additional WhatsApp “warning” in Peru, which was not realized in Ecuador. A lower school density seems to have also been a contributing factor to the results observed in the Ecuadorian context.
