In ball sports, athletes are taught to keep their eyes on the ball to catch or hit it successfully. This intuitive field experience has already been studied in the laboratory, indicating that tracking a moving object with smooth pursuit eye movements enhances our ability to predict the object’s trajectory in time and space. Similarly, intercepting a moving object critically relies on motion prediction. Here we assessed the functional significance of eye movements for manual interceptions. When bi-lateral movements of differing difficulty are performed as rapidly as possible the "easier" of the two limbs slows down and is attracted to the temporal structure of the more difficult movement. Simultaneous movements are expected to be severely compromised in Parkinson's Disease (PD). In this thesis I investigate how people adapt manual aiming in novel visual-motor environments and how different adaptation processes (implicit/explicit) depend on feedback type, and existing internal models (action experience). When the target of a reaching movement is displaced suddenly, people update their movement to take account of the jump, correcting their trajectory online to end the movement at the new target location. The Remote Distractor Effect (RDE) is a robust phenomenon where a saccade to a lateralised target is delayed by the appearance of a distractor in the contralateral hemifield (Walker, Kentridge, & Findlay, 1995). This research examines some design features that may increase noticeability, readership and recall of warnings within the text of product ownerâs manuals. Variables manipulated were warning saliency (e.g., low or high saliency), the physical placement of warnings in text (e.g., embedded versus separate), and text-directed cueing (e.g., low versus high salient cueing) in a fractional factorial design.
