Abstract:

CUNHA, A. R.; MARTINS, D. CLIMATIC CLASSIFICATION FOR THE DISTRICTS OF BOTUCATU AND SÃO MANUEL, SP 2 ABSTRACT Climatic classification defines the geographical limits of different climate types all over the world, and it is considered essential to study similar areas. This work updates the climatic classification of the municipal districts of Botucatu and of São Manuel, State of Sao Paulo, where the experimental farms of the Schools of Agronomical Sciences - UNESP, Campus of Botucatu, State of São Paulo, are located. Köppen’s and Thornthwaite’s methods were used for the air temperature and precipitation data in a 36-year period (from 1971 to 2006). For both municipal districts of Botucatu and São Manuel, the climate was characterized as being Cfa, hot climate with rains in the summer and drought in the winter, and the average temperature in the hottest month is above 22 ºC. According to Thornthwaite’s classification, there was a small difference due to the humidity index, characterized as B2rB'3a' (humid climate with small hydro deficiency - April, July and August, with annual potential evapotranspiration of 945.15 mm and concentration of the potential evapotranspiration in the summer of 33%) in the district of Botucatu, and as B1rB'3a' (humid climate with small hidric deficiency - April, July and August, with annual potential evapotranspiration of994.21 mm and concentration of the potential evapotranspiration in the summer of 33%)in the district of São Manuel. KEY WORDS: air temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, Köppen method, Thornthwaite method.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, one of the pivotal figures of the Portuguese Modernist movement, studied painting and began his work in Paris where he arrived at the age of 19. Interestingly, Amadeo cemented strong friendships with some physicians from his time. The first was Manuel Laranjeiro, physician, poet and essayist, who has been a major influence on his choice of studying visual arts. In 1909, the painter met the dermatologist Paul Alexander and later Dr. Martins, who diagnosed him with a dermatosis, which led the painter to have to interrupt his work. Described as an eczema, which affected his face and hands, probably an allergic contact dermatitis to paints or other products that did not become clarified, with the artist’s early death at age of 30 by pneumonic fever. Occupational diseases affect the practice of many professions and artists, including painters, who constitute an important risk group. Contact with several components of paints and solvents are associated with the contact sensitization. However, allergens responsible for allergic contact dermatitis change over the time according to the usage trends and products´ composition.

Abstract:
The history of the literary reception of Thomas More's Utopia in Portugal has been a tale of omissions, censorships and deferred translations that highlight a flaw within the Portuguese cultural system. Indeed, it is somewhat ironic that such a representative work of both Western literature and thought, historically associated with the opening of the world's geographical horizons, and which ascribed to a Portuguese sailor, Raphael Hythloday, the discovery of an ideal place, was first translated into Portuguese only in the second half of the twentieth century. However, the first decade of the twenty-first century seems to bode a more auspicious literary fortune for More's Utopia within the Portuguese literary idiom: not only has an edition of More's work finally been translated from the original Latin, but also two novels were published in 2004, A lenda de Martim Regos, by Pedro Canais, and Rafael, by Manuel Alegre. In the context of both books' plots, they rewrite the complex traits of the character of the Portuguese sailor and discoverer of the ideal island. The same reinvention of the character of Raphael had already been attempted, in 1998, by José V. de Pina Martins in his long dialogic Morean narrative, Utopia III. In this essay, I will focus both on the documental sources related to Portuguese culture that are at the root of More's Utopia and on some relevant aspects of the reception of the character of Raphael Hythloday within the aforementioned novels.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In 1750, Martin Folkes became the only individual who was President of both the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries of London, and he contributed to efforts to unite both organizations. Although he failed, illness forcing him to resign both offices, this chapter outlines the book’s analysis of the ensuing disciplinary boundaries between the two organizations in the early Georgian era in the context of Folkes’s life and letters. While it is normally assumed that natural philosophy and antiquarianism are disciplines that were fast becoming disconnected in this period, this work will reconsider these assumptions. The Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries were nearly reunited for good reason. Both societies incorporated techniques and affinities from antiquarianism—natural history and landscape—and the ‘new science’—engineering principles, measurement, and empiricism. Using Folkes’s life and letters, this biography will examine the disciplinary boundaries between the humanities and sciences in early Georgian Britain and reassess the extent to which the separation of these ‘two cultures’ developed in this era. It will also consider to what extent Folkes continued the Newtonian programme in mathematics, optics, and astronomy on the Continent. In this manner, the work will refine its definition of Newtonianism and its scope in the early eighteenth century, elucidating and reclaiming the vibrant research programme that Folkes promoted in the period of English science least well understood between the age of Francis Bacon and the present.

Chapter seven delineates Folkes role as Royal Society President from 1741 to 1752, analyzing to what extent Folkes’s large number of far-flung social contacts engendered scientific creativity in the Royal Society, challenging the long-standing, mistaken impression among scholars that the organization was in decline in the eighteenth century. The chapters also demonstrates to what extent Folkes participated in discoveries in studies of zoophytes and biological vitalism with Abraham Trembley. In this manner, we thus reclaim the vibrant research programme that Folkes promoted in the Royal Society.

This chapter examines contemporary academic and popular media conceptualizations of masculinity in relation to ‘hardness’. It stages this through a close reading of a recent documentary called ‘Hard Men’, which focuses on working-class masculinity. It then examines recent claims of connections between MMA practice and fascist ideologies. The chapter ultimately argues that an analysis of the formation or invention of political identities is a crucial task for media, cultural, and martial arts studies—a task that requires attention not just to local, physical, embodied, or ‘concrete’ contexts and practices ‘proper’, but that also involves analyses that take seriously the places and functions of transnational media culture, and the ways that subjects and objects of discourse and of study across all manner of media, medium, and cultural text and context are portrayed.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the personae, or “masks,” implicit in Martin Luther King, Jr.’s strategies of style by which he communicated his purposes for America. These roles he accepted and played with absolute fidelity. For example, when speaking prophetically, no unseemly aside, unmeant gesture, or hint of backstage behavior ever detracted from his role or diminished the high ground he had chosen for himself. Like a Greek actor, he moved across the stage speaking his lines with a passion appropriate to his mask. He never broke character. What sociologist Erving Goffman calls the “front,” which is a performer’s setting, appearance, and manner, remained in King utterly consistent.

In this chapter, Garnett and Hughes focus on the role of big data in accessing information from public inquiries. Looking at the Chelsea Manning court martial in the US and the Leveson Inquiry in the UK, they argue that the manner in which information pertaining to inquiries is made public is, at best, unsatisfactory. They propose a variety of means to make this information more accessible and hence more transparent to the public through employing big data techniques.

Abstract:
This chapter analyses the diversity of themes which Martial ‘epigrammatizes’ in his portrayal of Baiae and Campania, giving prominence to epigrams on wine, its use and abuse (1.18), and scandalous, tragic, and miraculous narratives, dramatized, occasionally, with literary or historical allusion and intertext. As he praises or mocks the country estates surrounding Baiae, Martial explores contemporary issues and compliments personal friends. A cycle of seven poems devoted to Silius and his Punica begins by comparing their disparate genres, inviting the poet-politician to surrender himself to the cultural temptations of Baiae, in the manner of his own Hannibal seduced by the music and sympotic delights of Capua (4.14). The wit, scope, and density of Martial’s literary allusions within this cycle extends beyond Silius himself to his cult of Virgil’s tomb in a witty cluster of epigrams from Book 11 where the theme of poetic emulation takes on a priapic slant.
