Full textThe study of Manuel Córrego´s (1932) work is unplublished in academic fields. His romances, tales and plays talk frequently with Portuguese literature and history. The objective of this dissertation is to analyze one of his plays, O Casamento de D. Manuel I (2004), and establish inter textual relationships with his fictional paradigms, in other words, historical romances, such as, Crônica esquecida DEl Rei D. João II (1998), by Seomara da Veiga Ferreira and A Sala das Perguntas (1998), by Fernando Campos. This analysis was fundamentally based on Flávia Maria Corradin´s studies in her book Antônio José da Silva, o Judeu: textos versus (con)textos (1998). The analysis also includes the relation between the studied play and the referred historical period, in this case, D. Manuel I´s reign and the discoveries golden era, when Portugal became an overseas power and avant-garde in navigations. This dissertation shows the monarch´s mental representation build by some renowned historians and also by the king´s official chronicler, Damião de Góes, in Crônica do felicíssimo Rei D. Emmanuel, and confronts them with the profile created by the dramatist for his character. Damião de Góes is also an important character of the play and his creation in also discussed in this work. Through intertextual analysis, we can visualize what kind of relationship exists between the play and its paradigms, and also fictional and historical elements that helped the dramatist to compose his plot and create his characters, highlighting in his work the historical period and the reality that he wanted to represent, by his own ideological vision, that resulted in his awarded play.

Full textThe focus of this research project is to investigate the component features of eroticism and its nuances in Manuel Bandeira\'s work through a thematic-stylistic bias. Therefore, a diversity of poems were analysed, the ones in which nudity reaches its contemplative plateau; in which matter finiteness and spiritual transcendence converge; in which subject and object indulge without moderation in attractions and sexual impulse; in which ultimate compassion is introduced and, finally, poems in which sacred and libidinous are complementary. The analyses were not focused on one specific book by the poet; for the study of the variants of the erotic discourse in Bandeira, poems from divergent maturities, which are representative of a plural literary personality as the one from the poet.
Lago, Flavia Togni do. "Manuel Bandeira e Jules Laforgue: Dor, ironia." Universidade de São Paulo, 2012. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/8/8149/tde-26102012-123505/.
Full textThis study consists to present one reading of Manuel Bandeira and Jules Laforgue poems, with a specific objective: to estabilish a discussion on pain and irony in both poethical works. The main subject of this investigation intends to make a contribution on the bandeirian irony - in one hand -, related to some meaningfull elements of Laforgue\'s work - in another. As we can see, Bandeira was, indeed, not only a reader but also a great admiror of the french poet; and instead one can observe some artistic differences between them, these points of distance will help us understand the creative process of Bandeira\'s irony. First of all, the study recovers the death theme in the earliest poems of both authors. In consequence, we could verify that in Bandeira\'s earliest books this theme is permeated by an idea of overcoming and, in the opposite hand of Laforgue, here death emerges as the only way of reconciliation with the world. Thus, we shall consider that the irony in Laforgue\'s work is more cruel, it\'s apparently used as a defensive or liberator weapon towards his death desire, which is presented since his earliest verses. In Bandeira, instead, irony is directly related to death as an overcoming, i.e, his irony is residual, allowing him to laugh after all the pain of life learning experienced. After this initial findings, the image of the Pierrot emerges as a point of convergence between the two works, summarizing in one figure the most important themes studied in this research: pain and irony.

Full textManuel Joaquim Rebelo, merchant of Lisbon, wrote Political Economy, on 1795. In his work he addressed issues related to the functioning of the economy that should be understood on a single guiding principle. Rebelo developed theoretically themes such as the freedom of economic agents, labour division, composition of goods value, and the role of the market in the economy and the society. His work was published only in 1821, in the context of the General and Extraordinary Courts of the Portuguese Nation, when the debate on economics took the scene in order to equate the multiple realities that then comprised the Luso-Brazilian Empire. The work presented now, resume the analysis of Manuel Joaquim Rebelo bringing forward new information on the author that help us to understand his insertion into the Portuguese society, while evidencing his relation with the debate on political economy in Portugal in the late eighteenth century. His work, Political Economy is analysed highlighting its approximations, distances and advances in relation to the Portuguese economic thought in the period. Furthermore, to point out the roots of his thought, we relate his ideas with political economy authors as Adam Smith and António Genovesi. Finally, we compare Political Economy with the texts published on the same occasion in 1821, to inquire on the probable reasons that led to its publication at that time.

Full textCartas provincianas: correspondência entre Gilberto Freyre e Manuel Bandeira is a doctoral thesis whose main elements are an edition of the correspondence between Gilberto Freyre (1900-1987) and Manuel Bandeira (1886-1968) and a selection and edition of some texts of both writers. As a complement this work presents a study that aims not only to bring some aspects of the dialogue (in a broadly sense) between Freyre and Bandeira, but also to extend this discussion to their readings of the Brazilian modernization process in the first half of the twentieth century. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to expose unpublished material, carefully edited, as well as to study the intellectual and artistic debates in the Brazilian modernist arena.

Full textThis work begins with the introduction to the author, to his literary importance as well as to his historical context, and it has the purpose of analyzing Hevia Anicetos pathway, who is the autodiegetic narrator in the novel Hijo de Ladrón by Manuel Rojas. The novel revolves around the problems and the experiences lived by the socially marginalized classes, and also around the social and economic conflicts experienced by the proletariat in Chile from the end of the 19th Century to the beginning of the 20th Century. We will observe the Classic Bildungsroman, which is a discursive gender originated in Germany in the midst of the dissemination of bourgeois ideas from the end of the 18th Century. Our purpose here is to observe how Rojas book, which is inserted in a context kept away by time, space and socio-economic circumstances of the Bildungsroman paradigm, maintains content and viewpoint affinities in relation to the classical gender in question.

Full textIn the Novel wrote by Manuel Puig (1932-1990) firstly published in 1969, we are able to find out literary conversations. These literary conversations are similar to spontaneous conversations in spite of the variety of colloquial oral registers. In their midst characteristics of a conversational text, we are able to figure out that there is a strategic of the face-saving view, in which the speakers exploit strategies that can not be treated their freedom of action or their self-steam, for these reason and with these abilities they can maintain the interaction balance in the conversation. Those are the main strategies of politeness which is the main goal of this dissertation. Our main goal is the analyse of politeness manifestation in the seven literary conversation selected by the novel Boquitas Pintadas. Therefore, based on the Theory of Perlocutionary Acts or Speech acts, in the Politeness studies and in concepts of the Conversation Analysis, we try out to analyze how the social distance between the participants of a conversation (orality), the Power between them, and the level of imposition of the speak acts influence the use of politeness in each of the seven literary dialogue studied. The results developed in this research can demonstrate that in those literary conversation analyzed was found three main varieties: Social Distance, Level of Imposition and Power. And among these varieties, the most important and significant strategy of politeness is the power relation found between the characters inside the conversations.

Full textThe proposal of this study is to analyse and interpret Manuel Bandeira´s poetic production, focusing on the dialogue entertained between the medieval and the modern poetry. Considering the analysis of certain poems of the Brazilian poet, we aim at eliciting the main ideas from the Middle Age that can be reinterpreted and reelaborated in Bandeira´s poetic works for instance: inacessibility of the loved person, total submission and subservience, and the humble and patient attitude of the troubadour towards the lady as well as the intention is to indicate the different approach to certain procedures, including senhal and the convention that prescribes that the identity of the beloved lady has to be maintained in secret, unveiled all this in the context of modernity and Modernism in Brazil.

Full textStarting from the novels Vidas secas by Graciliano Ramos (1938), Os flagelados do vento leste by Manuel Lopes (1959), and Famintos by Luís Romano (1962), we investigated the discursive strategies of the authors of the corpus, who dedicated their work to the socially less advantaged groups in their historical moment. We investigated the narrative perspectives of each author and the discursive strategies they selected to bring to light themes that went through the three pieces of prose fictions hunger, banditry, and oppression. We found in Josué de Castros work a rich research that allowed us to analyze hunger not only as a flagellum, but also as a social fact capable of more complex unfolding. The historian Eric Hobsbawm and the philosopher Louis Althusser founded our investigation of such unfoldings. We enphasize that our perspective has as horizon the comparatism of the solidarity suggested by the critic Benjamin Abdala Junior.

Full textIn a comparative perspective, between literature and society, this thesis analyzes space and speech in two Angolan narratives, Quem me dera ser onda (1982), by Manuel Rui, and Bom dia camaradas (2000), by Ondjaki. In chapter 1, I contextualise the time of the diegesis, examining the speech of characters, the narrator and the socialist lexicon, during the 80s. In chapter 2, the analysis focuses on the representation of spaces of city Luanda, in three instances: private, collective and public, in other words: house/home, buildings/apartment anda school; as well as its relations with the speech. In chapter 3, I demonstrate how space and speech are interconnected to the counterspeech (mujimbo). Inside this, I hope also demonstrate how the system of social contradictions suture the structure of the narratives.

Full textThe thesis presents a comparative study between the poetic work of the Mozambican Rui Knopfli (1932-1997) and that one of the Portuguese Manuel Alegre (1936-) from the concept of \"self writing\" (M. Foucault, 1983). It accompanies and reflects on the literary course of both authors, establishing relations with their experiences of public knowledge and their conceptions regarding literature, politics and homeland. In short, their poetic subjects, just like those historical subjects, are decentered in relation to any \"official\" discourse, whether the narrowest of the Academies and the Literary Criticism, or the broadest of the Portuguese Estado Novo and even that one of political groups opposed to it, including, in the case of the African writer, the one coming from the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (Frelimo). They are therefore \"displaced\" voices, from an I in inner exile. However, this sense is not restricted to the figurative: both in their objective reality, even in alternated moments, were marked by the exit, traumatic and for political reasons, from their original place, from their space, from their homeland; they did indeed know the physical exile and, likewise, transformed this experience into poetic matter. Throughout their journeys, always under the sign of displaced or decentralized, the poetry of both is equally active and full of paths and misfortunes quite close and if History and the sensitive world are gaining airs of disillusionment for those men, the poetic discourse shows that it can be beyond the means to denounce aesthetically the Portuguese dictatorship and colonization and the pain and suffering of those involved in the colonial / independence wars. Poetry is also the space, process and result for and of a reflection on the part of the being, constituting this discursivization like a \"self writing\". In addition, Poetry, which finally becomes the possible homeland, goes beyond the political-geographical limits of the territory where they are or would like to be and even and above all the limits of death, the ultimate exile of life, always on the look-out and that can be felt more and more as time goes by.

Full textThis study is intended to reflect about the literary understudied character, Manuel Pinheiro Chagas (1842-1895), portuguese writer considered by public opinion mainly as historical novelist. Choosing the historical novel as romance narrative, seems that Chagas tries to establish space with the realistic/naturalist novel, even after the Realism consolidation. Analyzing four of his novels, A virgem Guaraciaba (1865), A máscara Vermelha (1873) and its continuation O juramento da Duquesa (1873), and A descoberta da Índia. Contada por um marinheiro (1890), we could verify how the literary project from this author, that initiates itself with the history creation, starts to converge to a type of less romanticized realism, that he defines as romantic historical study.

Rio, Antonio Henrique Montero Del. "José de Alencar e Manuel de Jesús Galván: dois indianismos latino-americanos." Universidade de São Paulo, 2016. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/84/84131/tde-13092016-141451/.
Full textThis work is a joint study and comparison of novelists José Martiniano de Alencar, Brazilian, and Manuel de Jesús Galván, Dominican. The novels O guarani and Iracema, by Alencar, and Enriquillo, by Galván were analysed. The objective of the research was to demonstrate that the indianist work of the two novelists features in commom the establishment of a founding myth of nationality. In both, the proposed myth portrays the formation of Latin America as a fusion of Indigenous element and the Iberian element and the adherence to the values of Western civilization brought to America by the Europeans. The pillars supporting the building of Western civilization are the Greek science, the Christian religion and the Roman law. The plots of the novels are permeated with facts, concepts, characters and episodes that illustrate the initial project that was implemented by the Portuguese in Brazil and the Spanish in Hispaniola Island and other territories under their tutelage in the early days of colonization. This project included the transfer to America of the whole institutional framework that Spain and Portugal had. José de Alencar and Manuel de Jesús Galván are conservative, Catholic and faithful to the traditions. Their indianist novels extol the traditional bases on which are founded the Latin American societies, and refute the revolutionary tendencies that aim to undermine the time-honoured traditions of Western civilization. Revolutionary ideas that challenge the values of Western civilization are seen by novelists in question as something foreign to the institutional nature of the American countries. In this sense, the indianist work of José de Alencar and Manuel de Jesús Galván is distinguished by a deep patriotic feeling, to identify the true national values, exalting them and using them in the task of shaping literarily a founder myth of nationality. In the indianist novels by Alencar and Galván, the founding myth of nationality is a narrative centred on excellent characters, able to provide an example to the nation. This example is found in the nobility featuring those characters and to which they naturally belong to be members of a traditional elite that emerged spontaneously and by own merits. Exemplar is also the Christian faith of all the central characters and their respect for the precepts of religion. Also exemplary is the respect for natural law rules in the legal and institutional framework described by the novelists studied in their founding novels. It held even a confrontation with the current criticism of the novelists studied in order to reveal the misconceptions and the anachronism of the most widespread assessments about their works.
Paula, Julio Cesar Machado de. "Manuel Bandeira e a claridade: confluências literárias entre o modernismo brasileiro e o cabo-verdiano." Universidade de São Paulo, 2006. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/8/8156/tde-21082007-150507/.
Full textThis work analyzes the importance of Manuel Bandeira?s poetry, in the context of Brazilian literary Modernism, for the group of Cape Verdean authors responsible for the publication of Claridade magazine, especially in its first phase, in 1936 and 1937. Emphasis is given to some aspects that contributed to the literary confluence existent between these authors, such as the similarities of cultural formation, the quest for a Modernism that could function as a bridge between the literary heritage and the formal esthetic innovation, and the utopian nature of the literature. The intention is to contribute to a new reading of the Brazilian poet, stressing aspects that were relegated to the background, and, as a result, promoting a valorization of the Cape Verdean authors as agents in the vast system composed of all literatures written in the Portuguese language.

Full textThis paper provides an analytical reading of Manuel Bandeiras sixth poetry collection, entitled Lira dos cinqüentanos, which is marked by a strong regress to the traditional means of the poetic expression (as attested by the different texts composed in fixed form and the number of metrical and rhymed compositions, that constitute almost three quarters of the book). The intent here is to demonstrate that such gathering of texts of 1940s Poesias Completas (much remodeled four years later) can be seen, on grounds of its great stylistic variety (which, in spite of the weight of tradition, do not departs from aesthetical achievements of modernism, acknowledgeable in poems like Maçã and O Martelo, among others), as a synthesis of Manuel Bandeirass poetic itinerary. The reference in the title to the authors fiftieth elucidates the celebratory extent of his opus, which allows us to see the interlacement between life and work Estrela da vida inteira. For all that, Lira dos cinqüentanos constitutes, along with the two modernist books from 1930s, Libertinagem and Estrela da manhã, the more consistent part, concerning aesthetic quality, of Bandeiras lyric.
Full textThis essay studies the rhetorical-poetical invention of the epic poem Vila Rica, read as a composition that emulates the written custom of the greek, latim and modern epics, especially the Pharsalia of Lucan and the Henriade of Voltaire, bringing up to date, by the intermediacy of the thought of Francisco José Freire\'s precepts, filtered by the critical position of Voltaire, that depreciates the importance of many convenient rules to the decorum on the epic genus. The epic of Cláudio Manuel da Costa is understood as a practical exercise of poetry, guided by the teaching of a moral instruction and in favor of the admiration of a poetical delight, portrayed in the ideal attitude of the Portuguese military head as a representation of the mining lands pacification\'s history, producing a mythical heroic source for the mining country, searching the upholding of the memory in the posterity, following the example of the epic poetry portrayed in the Hispanic-colonial world, in the so called Siglo de oro, that represents the discovery and the pacification of colonies by Europeans, applying a sublime style in the re-invention of an action understood as heroic. When carrying through this movement, remaining unknown for a long time, and little divulged for centuries, the poem Vila Rica supports a critical history that is divided between praise and vituperation of the text, which represents the topos of utopian, taking into account that the portrayed landscape differs evidently from that one joined in the Arcadia and in the edges of the Mondego river, adjusted to the picture of the pattern locus amoenus, of the idyllic poetry of Theocritus. At the same time, it carries through turning the History into a myth, by the overlapping of various historical events, presented in the Fundamento Histórico, figured as topics of the death and of love, guiding and evidencing the estimation\'s character on the glory of the Portuguese kingdom\'s representatives\' actions in a hero carrying a perfecta eloquentia, against a belief in the natural law\'s domain on the State of Brazil\'s natives, re-inventing History in the aggregation of a recognized poetical glory, or to be invented in a hierarchic society that stages itself in a theater of images and speeches. It is abstained the subjectivity of a being in conflict with himself caused by the melancholy of the rocky landscape, searching the glory, further than tradition, demonstrating the moralistic catholic\'s honor in the Portuguese-Brazilian colonial\'s society, persistencing in the explanation of History.

Full textA paused pose - Antonio Manuel - Among the Brazilian contemporary artists of the 60s and 70s we believe that Antonio Manuel has been the one who has kept a profound mystery in his production. Even when he was banned, he managed to make his way and, little by little, take enough place to cause an inversion of representation, finding an erratic path that made him act dynamically. By taking the body as a gesture of freedom, he has expanded art. His way of thinking has turned into photography. When we say a pause, we want to emphasize the importance of the paused pose in the artists self portrait so as to justify the thesis that Antonio Manuel has also expanded contemporary art through photography. This enlargement of the creative act was due to the constant presence of photographic body images in his works, which, in a restless way, started this journey, enabling our statement that, today, photography has a meaning in the complex oh his series. In order to correct the reality so violently imposed by the military dictatorship, Antonio Manuel abandoned drawing over newspapers timidly to appropriated in pointing out the importance of this attitude and, for that purpose, we have developed some possibilities of comprehension. We have considered the strategies suggested by critics Mario Pedrosa and Frederico de Morais, as well as many other theorists we have studied, so as to make plausible the debate on the strategies of Brazilian contemporary art in the 60s and 70s at that time. The photography art of Antonio Manuel, particularly his photographic body images, has had an incredible resonance among the national and international art critic. However, it has not been exhibited as one of the few visual manifestations which knew how to be tuned with the different tendencies of photographic art in the last couple of decades. In order to confirm his conceptual importance, we have delimited his production between the years of 1967 and 1977. The structure of the chapters does not necessarily follow a chronological order, but rather the relationship between the creative act and the complex of series. We have highlighted the analysis oh his self portraits and portraits, as well as the film, where the art of disappearance by Jean Baudrillard supports the concept of photographic pause. A Paused Pose emphasizes the portrait, the disturbing objects and the alarming images which conceived the relationship between the artist and the world during a period of art crisis. However, the crisis of the subject in Antonio Manuel is challenging, for it has subverted the models and disarticulated the references by facing the work process with struggle and creativity. The spectator participant becomes an accomplice of this freedom.

Synchronic with the intention of approaching the text to its literary production of the period, comprising the literary speech that adresses directly the (Romantic Movement from the beginning of the XIX century) literary romance genre and the romanticism. The culture atmosphere of its time contributes to the writers production, without losing sight of his individuals characteristics. Diachronic in the sense of comprehending this literary work in the contemporary moment, therefore remaining meaningful nowadays, in the thematic and compositional aspects. Furthermore, the means for spreading that published the first version of the literary work, the journal (newspaper), will be part of the analysis.

Full textThe present Master\'s Dissertation proposes to analyze the text Informacion |1640|, written by the Portuguese polygraph Manuel de Faria e Sousa (1590-1649), from the Rhetorical and Poetic sources that guided its structuration as a defense genre. The sixteenth-century discourse proposed to the analysis is drafted subsequent to the sentence promulgated by the Mesa Pequena do Tribunal do Santo Ofício de Lisboa, which prohibits the circulation of the Comentarios aos Lusiadas, by the above-named scholar, since its publication in 1639. The substrate of accusatory action strongly disapproves of the allegories found in the censored book, which are constructed with a religious meaning based on the mythological plot of the heroic poem by Luís de Camões. Manuel de Faria justifies in Informacion the intricate mechanisms which lead to the proposed allegorical interpretation. Because we are dealing with an answer of a defendant to complaints brought by the book reviewer priests, it is worth bringing in Appendix the unpublished records of the Lisbon Inquisition (Ms.Port.5280.381* The Houghton Library, Harvard University), transcribed by us here, crucial to the understanding about the censorship imposed to the known book of Comments.

Full textManuel Pinheiro Chagas (1842-1895) was, in his time, an influential personality who took active part both in the field of literature and in politics. Moreover, he was the author of a multiform work with popular characteristics, read, in his time, with much interest and enthusiasm. Nevertheless, today, the literary erasure of this writer from the Portuguese canon is unquestionable, placed somewhere under the shadow of even second-rate writers. The central aim of this work is to show in Manuel Pinheiro Chagas\'s literary trajectory those facts which, in a decisive way, made him disappear from the canon. It will be shown that in these events Eça de Queirós plays a central role. He not only managed to erase Chagas\'s important participation as a politician, a critic, a historian, and a prose writer, but reduced the figure of his foe by immortalizing it in the satire-portrait of a conservative, reactionary patriot, under the code-name of \"Brigadier from the time of D. Maria II\".

Full textThe 19th century, marked by the uprise of the Portuguese burgeoisie, has also been distinguished by marriage arrangements, which became to prioritize the financial matters to the detriment of the blood values. Camilo Castelo Branco, like many other writers from that time, made a point of discoursing about this subject in his work. In the novels Aventuras de Basílio Fernandes Enxertado, Eusébio Macário and A corja, the author engenders characters who make use of opportunist strategies, in order to lure in the new wealthy , mostly through labor in Brazil. In these narratives, matrimonial union focuses on money rather than on the loving feeling, therefore becoming the outcome of calculation and interests. Also, in the mid 19th century, Manuel Antônio de Almeida would publish, in Brazil, Memórias de um sargento de milícias. There isnt, in the content of those books, any explicit reference between them, but the similarities of the themes that permeate them, allow us to develop a comparative work. Just like Camilo Castelo Brancos novels, in Brazilian narrative, the gainful marriage arises as a form of social mobility, where ascension through work was hampered by socioeconomic problems. Starting with the dialogue with the Spanish picaresque tradition, the Brazilian author also presents his characters falling back on dodgery to reach the right marriage that would enable them to become rich. This way, in the novels which were studied on this thesis, we notice a dialogue between the authors and the history of their own countries, because in the process of the narrative, while they follow the events that will end up in the weddings which were planned by the characters, the reader can notice some aspects of social structure from Brazil and Portugal in the 19th century, resulting in the structure of the literary work.

Full textThe purpose of this work intends to note comparativily Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias (1855), O Alienista (1882) and Vida e morte de M. J. Gonzaga de Sá (1919), with sights to also bring back the contribution of studious predecessors. Three studies supplying subsidies on what it can be of serious and comic regarding to the material of the true world, re-studied under the writers views who had used either the Court or the Republic as scene. Authors who, while configuring such personages, were fed by the expedients through which the texts, dialogue, in some way, itself: a mocking anecdote, which is clear in Almeida, agrees with the chronicle almost true, in the story of Machado. In spite of the laughs that ignite, they are possibly closer to the romance of Lima not only of the stylistic point of view. In the three cases, the plots constitute themselves through the pictures and trajectories of main characters, which more or less dislocated against the social conventions. In its time and way, Almeida, Machado and Lima had traced parallels between certain procedures of the personages and those of the non-fictional persons: some and others living to the base of veils. Literature disassembles the Brazilian stage, for entertainment and drama of the readers.

Full textThis dissertation has as its main research objective two symphonic works with soloists, the Two Sinfonias Concertantes by Manoel Jozé Gomes. The first one, the Sinfonia Concertante [ for two soloist violins and orchestra in B flat major] and the second, the Sinfonia Concertante [ for two soloist violins and orchestra in E flat major], both here atributed to Manuel José Gomes (1792-1868), kappellmeister of the São Carlos Mother Church ( later denominated Campinas). The symphoniess manuscripts, probably original autographs, are deposited at the Arts, Ciences and Litterature Center of Campinas, wich supports the Carlos Gomes Museum. To support the viability of the first perspective of understanding the poetry and style of those Two Sinfonias Concertantes, this dissertation also contains the first complete full score edition of the two orchestral works.

Full textThe essay publishes the translation supposedly made by Claúdio Manuel da Costa, the Luso- Brazilian poet (1729 - 1789), of Demofonte\'s opera libretto composed by the Italian poet Pietro Metastasio (1698-1782). It makes the paleographic and critic transcriptions of the existent apograph in Mariana Archdiocese\'s music archives. In the paleographic transcription, the text is exactly reproduced, in order to show to the reader the way it was written and the translator\'s interferences in the Italian original text. In the critic transcription, some corrections were made, in an attempt of establishing a definitive version. The essay makes some references about theatre and plays in 18th century Portugal, which, by their turn, had Spanish, Italian and French works as models. As an emulation of what was being played in Portugal, the theatric models were adopted in Vila Rica, the Minas Gerais captaincy capital, that lived the apogee of the gold exploitation until the first half of the 18th Century, becoming the center of political, economic and intellectual colonial power. Theatric representations were enjoyed by the literate people, in their acquaintanceship spaces, and also by other inhabitants in public spaces, when public parties and events were promoted.
Cunha, Wellington Soares da. "O poema Vila Rica e a historiografia colonial." Universidade de São Paulo, 2008. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/8/8149/tde-04072008-140844/.
Full textThis work offers a new approach to the epic poem Vila Rica, by Minas Geraisborn poet Cláudio Manoel da Costa (1729-1789). Written in 1773, it was not published during the life of the author who, disenchanted with the poor repercussion of his works in the Portuguese metropolis, did not consider it worth of publication, which would only occur posthumously in 1839. Nevertheless, Vila Rica is a very important document for the history of the country, since it offers a rather accurate representation of the foundation of the Minas capital, a city that in this context means the country itself. His epic poem is, above all, one of the few documents written in colonial times that focus on the analysis of the social, political and economical formation of the captaincy of Minas. Furthermore, the editions of Vila Rica are relatively rare and little instigate historiographic studies that aim at perceiving the work as a historical document. It is imperative then, to the historiography of the colonial texts, to define new reading approaches to this epic text, contributing to enrich the colonial historiography. For that we must analyze the essential parts that make up Vila Rica, from Carta Dedicatória (Dedicatory Letter) and the poem itself, through the historic study that substantiates it, very revealing of Cláudio\'s literary talent as a historian, Fundamento Histórico (Historic Foundation). A result from the poet\'s application to search through documents and gather accounts on Minas, Fundamento Histórico clearly evinces the concern to provide authority to the story it narrates through critical analysis and a discerning choice of sources. That way, the history account in Fundamento and the one utilized in the poem have distinct characteristics, which aim at specific objectives, which we will analyze. To study the way he utilizes History in these two discursive levels is an indispensable task to approach any consideration as to the poem\'s historiographical value. And this will be the main motive of the work. We will show the criteria used by the critics on the poet and his work, which always tended to the depreciation of the poem, to later demonstrate a new possible analysis, one committed to sketch the poem\'s historiographic value from its own constitution as a historical discourse. We will therefore cover two lines of analysis. First we will try to understand the poem as a product of its own time, defining its main levels of existence, from its creation through its circulation and reading. From that we will proceed to the next one, committed to understanding the plans applied to the epic that could define it as a historical text, thus revaluating the work. We will also discuss the conscience, always present in Cláudio Manuel da Costa\'s work, that he belonged to a new land, which led to the affirmation of his nationalist feelings and the motivation for the Inconfidência (Disloyalty) made by the romantic critics. Finally, we will see the bases that direct this presumed patriotism, from an analysis of the poetic principles utilized by the author, aiming at perceiving how much this patriotism should be understood as a psychological and individual expression of a passion for his country or as a mere application of an argument for composition.

Full textThe aims and objectives of this essay are to analyze themes referring to native-americans - such as nudity, war and anthropophagy in Manuel da Nóbrega\'s \"Diálogo da conversão do gentio\" and in Jean de Léry\'s \"Histoire d\'un Voyage faict en la terre du Bresil\". To this purpose, it uses as reference the medieval iconographical patterns present in the 16th century\'s imagery, as well as values attributed to commonly used lexicon when referring to natives - indian, barbarian, cannibal, savage, negro. In order to analyze both Nóbrega\'s and Léry\'s texts, the following study endeavors to set these texts within the political-theological discussion to which they are tied and to approach them from a rhetorical perspective, taking into account that both points of view are essential when understanding exactly how the Brazilian native is hereby depicted.

Full textThis thesis aims to analyze and problematize the poetry of Joaquim Manuel Magalhães (JMM), comparing it punctually with his critical and translational production in order to discuss the topic of the verse \"to return to the real, to this disenchantment\". The poet published this proposal in 1981, first as an essay, later reformulated as a poem, becoming mandatory for the production of the poet-critic, as well as fundamental for the most varied interpretations of his poems. The analysis of his work passes, initially, by the poem \"Principle\", poetic synthesis of Magalhães. Then, we analyze the poems published before 1981 that may have prepared the declaration of \"to return to the real\", in order to analyze the poems immediately after the year 1981, investigating traits that point to dialogues or departures, the more mature and recognized period of Magalhãess work. Lastly, we discuss his most current developments, notably the replacement of the work proposed in 2010, when there is a wide change of perspective, waving to new contours of his poetic writing, different from the poetic itinerary constructed from 1974 to 2010. The interest of this thesis, therefore, is to understand this movement of the work, resorting to the irradiations that the idea of to return of the real bases.

Full textBased on the narratives of fiction Galo cantou na baía (Rooster crowed at the bay) (1936), of Manuel Lopez, and Um ladrão (A thief) (1939), of Graciliano Ramos, we attempted to investigate the discursive strategies of the authors of our corpus, trying a mobilization in the benefit of the people living in extreme deprivation situation, taking the literature as a strong tool to promote urgent debates on that historical moment, characterized by the oppression of dictatorial regimes. Being so, the narrative perspective is one of the central points of this/our work. In confluence with the social share portrayed in the stories, it seemed crucial the debate on hunger and its effects on the human body, which turned out to direct our work.We find in the work of Josué de Castro a rich research capable of conducting our analysis, leading us from the starving condition of the characters to their deployment: the condition of a debut criminal. We also sought to analyze the ideological patterns which influenced the consciousness of that period of the History, getting from Louis Althusser subsidies for such analysis.

Full textThis work aims to explore the relationships between two works produced in Portuguese and somehow linked to the political engagement tendency of modernist literature: Angústia by Graciliano Ramos, and Voz de prisão by Manuel Ferreira. Between the comparative links is the hypothesis that, in both books, are exposed and explored the existing tensions between hegemonic speeches and \"underground speeches\". This discursive clash - cultural, aesthetic, ideologic - will be thought as romanesque invoice and also through the participation and/or intervention of the figure of the scholar, to which, in different ways, has relevance in the works in question.

Full textThe objective of this paper is to study the genre \'letters\' in their specificity \'letters between writers\' presented in a unified, chronological corpus and demonstrate that it registers brands of orality, particularly attenuation markers, creating a courteous epistolographic speech of Mario de Andrade and Manuel Bandeira and his interlocutor Alphonsus Guimaraens Filho. We elected as a corpus 6 letters from Mário de Andrade and Manuel Bandeira and 19 sent to Alphonsus Guimaraens Filho during the period of 1940 to 1944 and edited in the book Itinerários. A descriptive and historical study of the genre letters is made, verifying that the form/composition of the genre did not suffered any modifications since the beginning of the year 200 AD to the present day. We positioned the letters between the scripturality/orality poles, evidencing the hybrid condition of the genre and the texts under analysis. The letters were produced graphically and conceptually written, however, they present orality marks. We verified that the epistolographic history between the authors was long lasting and it reached its goal, contributing to the aesthetic enhancement of Alphonsus Guimaraens Filho. It can be added that such success is given by the presence of verbal courtesy in the letters especially through the markers of attenuation. Such marks modalized the statement, decreasing the strength of face threatening acts. In conclusion, it is highlighted the valuable input of Mário de Andrade and Manuel Bandeiras letters regarding the literaly achievements. The thesis contributes to linguistic studies, once proven that despite being renowned writers, Mário de Andrade and Manuel Bandeira proved to be respectful and courteous towards the young writer Alphonsus Guimaraens Son, succeeding at keeping the same distance interaction.

Full textThe theme of our study is the Brazilian divulgation activity undertaken by the diplomat and historian Manuel de Oliveira Lima. The activity was most intensively carried out between 1908 and 1912, a period corresponding to that in which the diplomat held the position of Minister Plenipotentiary of the Legation of Brazil in Brussels, Belgium. These were lectures in Academies and Universities and articles for literary magazines, in which Oliveira Lima dealt with the historical formation of Brazilian nationality and undertake literary critiques about Brazilian writers, in order to disseminate such subjects abroad - more precisely in some European capitals. Throughout the study, we effort to understand the meaning of this activity. This led us to articulate our understanding that the disclosure was related to the positions of Oliveira Lima in the face of the intellectual discussions around the issue of Brazilian nationality and to a Brazilian foreign policy defended and executed by the diplomat regarding the issues of Brazil\'s insertion in the World.

Full textThis dissertation aims to introduce the work Excerptos de Filosofia Taoista by Manuel da Silva Mendes, whom is considered to be the first Portuguese to study and disseminate the Chinese Taoist tradition in Macau. Based on the concepts that translation is a re-creation or a reinvention, which were presented by Haroldo de Campos in his work Da transcriação poética e semiótica da operação tradutora, 2011, four poems of the work in question will be analyzed in order to demonstrate that they are adaptations of the classic books of Chinese thoughts stretchs 道德經 Dào Dé Jīng, by 老子 Lăozĭ, and 南華經 Nán Huá Jīng, by 莊子 Zhuāngzĭ. To this end, a comparative analysis will be made between the original stretchs in classical Chinese and the English translations by the Scottish sinologist James Legge, translator with whom Silva Mendes dialogues. The analysis will also serve to show the similarities and differences between the poetic versions of the Portuguese author and the originals, most part written in prose.

Full textThe objective of this work is to analyze the fiction of Camilo Castelo Branco and Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, very popular writers in Portugal and Brazil, respectively, among the 1840s and 1880s, a period in which they published their expressive productions, which include novels, short stories, poems and plays, that were somehow obliterated by literary historiography throughout the 20th century. In order to cover a significant part of their fictional productions, works that, at first, could represent the major subgenres of 19th century novel were selected: the sentimental novels Amor de Perdição and A Moreninha; the travel narratives Vinte Horas de Liteira and A Carteira de Meu Tio; the fantastic narratives O Esqueleto and A Luneta Mágica; the historical novels O Demônio do Ouro and As Mulheres de Mantilha; and the (pre-)naturalist novels O Senhor Ministro and As Vítimas-Algozes. From the reading of these works, it is possible to deduce converging aspects between these authors, as the subversion of novelistic conventions, the break of reading expectations and the deviation from the recurring thematic and the narrative procedures most commonly used in the 19th century. Thus, the study starts from the hypothesis that, because they were protagonists of the rise of the novel in Portugal and Brazil, peripheries of capitalism in the expression used by Roberto Schwarz , countries that also shared the same language and a common cultural background, these writers shared, in some ways, similar socio-cultural contexts. On one hand, in order to serve the consumer market, they needed to maintain ties with the literature in vogue, on the other they sought to distance themselves from it, in a movement of attraction and repulsion by the novelistic models.

Full textLonging is a signifier that condenses semantic layers which come close to the meanings of melancholy and nostalgia, but distinguishes itself (from them) by constituting the human perception of time fugacity and their aspirations for eternity. Such dimensions relate most of the time to the lack of and the wish to turn present childhood images, the memory of dear friends, of the loved ones and of the distant place of origin. Present in the Portuguese lyric poem since the records of medieval troubadours chants, longing was associated with all aesthetic literary movements, becoming a prevailing topic of the Brazilian lyric poem, firstly in an incipient way during the Colonial Period, and then more intensely from the Romantic Movement on. The following work has opted for the perspective of the longing for the place of origin, aiming to distinguish the similarities and dissimilarities of its meanings between the Portuguese matrices and the Brazilian lyric poem. In order to do so, at first a survey was done to identify the etymologies of the word, as well as remarks about possible psychological backgrounds. Next, it was made a diachronic compilation of the topic, starting with the lyric of Portuguese poets, which indicates the predominance of collective poetic subjects who long for a grandiose homeland, a pathos based upon mythical narrative and historical records. By means of a modernist perspective, the meanings of the longing for the place of origin were sought within a Brazilian utterance, in which the works of three distinctive poets of that period were chosen: Evocação do Recife, Recife and Vou-me embora pra Pasárgada, by Manuel Bandeira; Ilha do Governador, Saudades do Brasil em Portugal and Pátria Minha, by Vinicius de Moraes; and Tristeresina, A Rua and Três da Madrugada, by Torquato Neto. In these works, it will be observed to what extent the meaning of longing is close to or distant from the Portuguese semant ics. Whenever they prove to be distant from the Portuguese matrix, they are recognizable by their ludic accents, by the emphasis on the intimacy of the poetic subjects and by the predominance of a colloquial syntax. By way of conclusion, it has been highlighted the relevance of this topic for the lyric poem: longing constitutes an index that points out to the search of the subject for themselves, so that by writing about beloved places of origin, the poet establishes poetic subjects in order to make them present.

Full textThis thesis tends to comprehend in which ways the poet and regal teacher Manuel Inácio da Silva Alvarenga (1749-1814) can be considered a representative of the Enlightment in Portuguese America. Silva Alvarenga, studying Canonic Law at Coimbra University between 1768 and 1776, experimented the period of the reformation of the university, projected by the Marquis of Pombal. After his return to Brazil, he became Rhetoric regal teacher at Rio de Janeiro, in 1782. He was the most active member of the Sociedade Literária do Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1786. In 1794, he went to prison, accompanied by other members of the Sociedade, accused of promoting the circulation of French ideas and conspiracy against the royal power and the catholic religion. Considering his academic background, his trajetory after his return to Brazil, the aspects of his poetic writings and the constitution of his private library one of the most important of the colonial period , the work tends to appraise in which ways Silva Alvarenga can be considered as a representative of the Enlightment in Portuguese America, aiming to understand which tendencies of the Enlightment can be seen in his trajetory.

Full textThis research finds its justification in the spirit of the opening towards the modern foreign languages in the European Union. As, since January 2007, Romania has entered this big family, the teaching of modern foreign languages has become, more than ever, a priority. In this research we were interested in : - the place of the Romance languages and of the English language in the Romanian education system of today ; - the way in which the current official documents (school curricula, national curricula, school textbooks) of the Ministry of Education and Research of Romania integrates a new framework of the European Council, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) ; - the current school textbooks of the Romance languages (French, Italian, Spanish) and of English ; - the pedagogical activity in the teaching of various foreign languages. Nowadays, the ways of learning and teaching are numerous, but our analysis followsthe theoretical framework of CEFR, with the purpose of helping teachers, students and the authors of courses coordinate their efforts to enhance the quality of the teaching process. Our research opens the way for a deeper reflection as to the efficiency of the methods used today in the field of teaching foreign languages in high school. The modern Didactics tries to answer the requests of the society, proposing multiple strategies and adapted to form the students. The experience of the tradition associated with the capacity of innovation sets the new landmarks of school for a multicultural society. If the Romanian educational system wants to keep pace with the modernity, will have to continue the steps already made observing and applying the CEFR rules, to secure that the teachers are formed and are given the means to integrate this modernity in the actual teaching and practice in schools

Full textThis work through the establishment of the sources used on the paper titled Memória Histórica da Capitania de São Paulo, seeks to analyze the textual transformation in the passage from one text to another. The Memória Histórica, of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu, higher official of the Secretariat of the Province of São Paulo, is an eighteenth century manuscript deposited in the Archive of the State of São Paulo, composed mainly of texts of the eighteenth century texts written by historians, as Pedro Taques de Almeida Paes Leme Leme História da Capitania de São Vicente; Notícia Histórica da Expulsão dos Jesuítas do Colégio de São Paulo e Nobiliarquia Paulistana Histórica e Genealógica and Frei Gaspar da Madre de Deus Memórias para a História da Capitania de São Vicente. Despite the confirmation of the full reproduction of many sections and paragraphs of such works, the manuscript is not configured as a literal copy of his sources, since Manuel Cardoso intentionally intervened in the texts which served as a model for the construction of his Memória, implementing to this end, a series of changes that gave rise to a new text. In the early twentieth century, after the acquisition of this works by the State Archives, historians as Capistrano de Abreu and, especially, Afonso dEscragnolle Taunay, raised the question of its authenticity, supported by the notions of authorship and intellectual property. As a consequence, Memória Histórica was judged as a case of plagiarism, without, however, a discussion on the motivation and purpose of textual appropriation, the relationship of that text with their sources and without consideration for writing and copying practices during the period when they were constructed, being held. So, based essentially on theoretical and methodological principles, such as Critical Sources, Philology and Textual Criticism, this research focuses on the examination and collation of the sources from Memória Histórica, and it searches to establish the categorization of filtering mechanisms for these sources, so that it is possible to reveal which variants of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu in the writing process of his work and to what extent was his was intentional intervention.

Full textThe aim of this work is to establish the link between adventure novel translation, in the 1930s, and its production context, going beyond the text and its aesthetic value. Translations involve a dynamic relationship between several frameworks of cultural practices. These relationships show that the works do not take place in a vacuum, and cannot be dissociated from their production and reception contexts. The use of entertaining literature to make the corpus of this study is in accordance to the acceptance of new themes by cultural history and shows its value in the enrichment of historiographical discourse. Starting from the hypothesis that, in prose, reception conditions, and the historical moment are more decisive factors to the resulting translation, and the literary genre imposes constraints that tend to limit the copyright and creative character of the activity, this study analyzed three translations of the Tarzan series, published by Companhia Editora Nacional, during the first decade of 1930: O tesouro de Tarzan, translated by Manuel Bandeira, Tarzan, o terrível, by Monteiro Lobato and Tarzan, o rei da jângal, by Godofredo Rangel. The comparison of these works heads the discussion about how the translator negotiates the constraints imposed by the genre, and by the context, and to what extent the voice of the translators is heard. Cultural history and translations studies, primarily, the polysystem theory of Itamar Even-Zohar and the descriptive approach to translation of Gideon Toury, in addition to discussions on the presence of a translators voice proposed by Mona Baker and Theo Hermans, make up the theoretical framework of this study. The strategies and resources used in the selected translations supported in paratexts and in the word of the agents involved in the production and promotion processes of the book, is considered in order to build a continuum between these translations and their environment.
