Abstract:
Illumination of the manuscript is an integral part of the manuscritpt itself. Illumination of the manuscript can help readers understand the origin of the manuscripts as the characteristic and pattern of the motive of the manuscripts of each region is different from one to another, besides indeed the style and the subjectivity of the writer. One of the regions which has the manuscripts with various illumination is Cirebon, a border area between two poles of the two big cultures: Java and Sunda. The tradition of making manuscript illumination is developed in line with the tradition of the writing and rewriting the manuscripts. The illumination is made based on the contain of the text or the adjustment of the genre of the manuscript. This writing is discussing various types of the illumination and their functions in the manuscript and social-economic of Cirebon community.

Abstract:
Manuscript Syair Kupu-Kupu (hereinafter referred to as SKK) is one of the manuscripts that fall into the category of symbolic poetry. This manuscript stored at Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin with the Schoemann V 40 manuscript code. SKK has three version of texts. This manuscript does not have a colophon containing information about the manuscript. SKK manuscripts is included in the category of symbolic poetry because the contents of the SKK text are assumed to represent past events written using animal and plant symbols as character names. This characteristic of symbolic poetry described by GL Koster in his dissertation research. The research on the SKK manuscrips was carried out to determine the history of the emergence of symbolic poetry through the information contained in the text. The theories used in this research are codicology and textology theories. Codicological theory is used to describe the text. Textological theory is used to analyze the history of the SKK text and the reasons for the emergence of symbolic verses. The result of the research on the SKK manuscript was that the SKK manuscript was written at the request of a manuscript collector from Germany named Carl Schoemann while in the Dutch East Indies. In addition, the emergence of symbolic poetry in the Malay region is due to the concept in the Malay community to hide things that are considered taboo to be told. This is in accordance with the agreement of the first Malay king with his people in Malay History.

In the early nineteenth century, the antiquarian James Savage produced a print edition of John Winthrop's seventeenth-century manuscript journal. This transmedial reproduction illustrates the differing affordances of print and manuscript as vehicles for connecting to the past. Manuscripts offer a tangible link to long-dead people, but manuscripts' rarity encourages their sequestration in archives. In contrast, print editions make historical content more broadly accessible but provide a less direct material link to earlier eras. Print facsimiles of manuscript, such as the reproduction of Winthrop's handwriting included in Savage's edition, seek to embody the best of both media. But print facsimiles' promise of access to manuscript materiality elides their nature as temporal hybrids and their tendency to distort and damage their originals. The way that nineteenth-century antiquarians negotiated manuscript's and print's temporal affordances and juggled the competing prerogatives of past, present, and future makes those antiquarians useful models for understanding the stakes of digitization projects today.

AbstractThis essay sheds new light on the controversial fourteenth-century poet and compiler Lodewijk van Velthem. Specifically, the article considers the possible relationships between The Hague, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, MS 129 A 10, the manuscript containing the famous Lancelot Compilation, and Leiden, University Library, MS BPL 14 E, the only extant manuscript with Velthem's entire Fifth Part of the Spiegel historiael. A note written at the end of the manuscript in The Hague naming Velthem has been interpreted in different ways, either as a note of the manuscript's ownership, or as the attribution of the compilation to Velthem. Other scholars have considered Velthem the 'corrector' of the manuscript. The relatively low quality of these two manuscripts, as well as the types of annotations made in the margins of MS 129 A 10, however, can be explained when we consider both books as the poet's working copies, as manuscripts which formed part of Velthem's own literary archive.

Abstract:
Most surviving runic inscriptions from early medieval England were produced in an ecclesiastical context, and the influence of manuscript writing practices on the runic tradition can clearly be discerned. The manuscript record of runes or runica manuscripta that flourished particularly in the context of Anglo-Saxon missionary activity to the Continent has, however, usually been regarded as a late antiquarian development, largely detached from the epigraphical tradition. In this paper, I argue that not only did manuscript practice clearly influence epigraphy, but also that several uses of runes in manuscripts can be considered as extensions of the epigraphical tradition. Some runica manuscripta also seem to evoke pointedly the monumental tradition, including associations with permanence, public display, and memorialisation. Through the case studies of decorative uses of runes, scribal signatures, and textual interventions in runes, I argue that there is a relatively consistent association between the runic script and monumental epigraphy that can be transposed onto the manuscript page for particular effects, which rely on received knowledge of the epigraphical tradition long after the use of runes in monumental contexts had ended.

Manuscript AM 239 fol. is central for the so-called Helgafell-manuscripts, as it connects the group of some sixteen manuscripts and fragments to the Augustinian house of Helgafell on Snæfellsnes in west Iceland. The manuscript’s significance lies not only in the ownership note on fol. 1r, but also in the fact that it was used as an exemplar for two manuscripts, AM 653 a 4to (with JS fragm. 7) and SÁM 1. The codicological structure of the manuscript is complex and was recently described as a composite consisting of two late-fourteenth-century production units. This article revisits the codicology of AM 239 fol; it shows there are, in fact, three production units from that period and explores the ways in which these relate to one another. The genesis of the manuscript is important to keep in mind when discussing AM 239 fol. as exemplar, as it offers a possible explanation as to why only one of its texts was copied into SÁM 1.

This research is based on the case of the well-preserved collection of Gelumpai Manuscripts, which is estimated to be centuries old and believed to date back to the year 1300 C. The manuscripts serve as authentic evidence of Islamic civilization in Palembang at that time and can strengthen historical value through the collective memory of the nation. The study aimed to determine the manuscript’s supporting factors and the Gelumpai Manuscript preservation process. The research method used was qualitative with a case study approach. The research object was the Gelumpai Manuscript, which used the Ka Ga Nga script. Data was obtained through interviews, field observations, and related documentation studies. The results showed that several supporting factors for the preservation of this manuscript included adequate humidity, ideal light intensity, and effective protection against pests and pollution. This means that the South Sumatra Museum has implemented the appropriate standard. The museum carried out preservation by coating the manuscripts with white oil and periodically cleaning and checking the collection in the storage room. Furthermore, this museum held conservation support activities such as Museum Goes to School, Museum Goes to Village, and Collaboration Exhibitions, which were held to educate the public about the specialty of the Gelumpai Manuscript. So, the society will work together to maintain the existence of the collective memory contained in the manuscript.

Anders Toftgaard: Mapping a collection. What the catalogue records can tell us about Otto Thott’s manuscript collection and about manuscript cataloguing. This article deals with the manuscript collection of Count Otto Thott (1703-1785) and with manuscript cataloguing. Otto Thott was the single greatest private book collector in the history of Denmark and of inestimable importance for the Royal Danish Library, since he bequeathed his collection of manuscripts (4154 catalogue numbers) and books printed before 1531 (6059 catalogue numbers) to the Royal Library. In the manuscript collection, the inclusion of his collection marks the division between the Old Royal Collection (GKS) and the New Royal Collection (NKS). Many of the treasures in the rare books collection come from his library, and his definition of paleotypes (books printed before 1531) has (in the 20th c.) determined the definition of the collection of post-incunabula. Otto Thott did not write owners’ marks or notes in his books and he left very little archival material concerning the ways in which he created his library. Regrettably, the literary correspondence mentioned in his will has not survived. The article analyses a data set consisting of all catalogue records (in MARC format) concerning manuscripts from Otto Thott’s manuscript collection. These catalogue records in the library system derive from the catalogue made by Rasmus Nyerup (excluding oriental manuscripts) and published in 1795. When, towards the end of the 19th centrury, the alphabetical and the systematical catalogues of the collection of western manuscripts were produced, the entries in Nyerup’s catalogue were copied by hand without being revised. After the IT revolution, when the catalogue records of the systematical catalogue were transferred to a digital database of records, these records were copied once again without revision. It is shown what kind of errors from the catalogue of 1795 were still present in the on line catalogue in 2019. The quantitative analysis shows that the bulk of the manuscripts in Thott’s manuscript collection are manuscripts in Danish and German from Thott’s own century. The subject headings with most entries are Theology, History, History of Denmark, Danish Biography and Literature. As to provenances there is information concerning the manuscript’s provenance before the inclusion in Otto Thoot’s library in 17 % of the catalogue records. The analysis shows that Otto Thott’s manuscript collection was a universal collection with no specific preferences. The conclusion argues that it is necessary to get information from the various printed catalogs of the manuscript collection into the digital library system and that parts of Thott’s manuscript collection deserve revisiting and recataloguing. The Royal Danish Library’s manuscript collection might explore alternatives to the MARC-format for manuscript cataloguing. In a wider context, it is argued that Otto Thott’s library should be considered a knot in a network, and that data from the many book auction catalogues should be extracted and used for mapping the destinies of specific books and manuscripts.

Maimun Zubair is one of the manuscripts that discusses disasters. This manuscript is the most recent Indonesian literature about disaster that can be used to comprehend the COVID-19. This study using the hermeneutic methods to reveal the meaning of the COVID-19 based on the manuscript's perspective and its significance for religious life. The results of the study show that this manuscript does not only contain the concept of disaster, but also offers mitigations and solutions that can be applied in the case of COVID 19.

<p>The most Indonesian written manuscripts were written in the Netherlands language. These manuscripts could be accessed by one of the following catalogs: Juynboll Catalogue (1899), Ronkel Catalogues (1909), Riclefs and P. Voorhoeve Catalogue (1977) etc. Unfortunately, the Indonesian researchers have no way to utilize them. According to the international catalogs written in Indonesian and foreign languages, The Malay manuscripts found in Banda Aceh reached about 300 titles. After conducting preliminary research and direct observation to the individual and institutional collectors, it was found that the real numbers of them could reach to a thousand titles of manuscripts that still have separated in various local places. On behalf these facts, the research aims to rescue these manuscripts from a disappearing and extinction by conducting inventory that is predicted to be able to push the Indonesian researchers ahead to discovering their substantial contents that in opinion useful for human life. The output of the research is compiling catalog documents of 1000 titles of Malay manuscripts found in Banda Aceh.<br />The theory and method used in this research are the theory of the codicology and the method of the catalog of manuscripts register. The codicology is subfield studying all of the manuscript’s aspects in details such as the place of storing, the owner of the manuscript, the content of the manuscript, etc. Whereas the catalog of a manuscript register is describing all of systematically manuscript’s physical and objective aspect in details. The results of the research will be proposed to be the main gate for entering later philology works i.e. presenting and interpreting the text that in turn can be positioned as a manual directive in social and national life.</p>

The “Heishuicheng Manuscripts Collected in Russia” (俄藏黑水城文獻) Volume6 contains the Chinese manuscript Ф211V Ф288V Ф266V “Dasheng ruzang lu juan shang 大乘入藏錄卷上”, and its verso side preserves a number of Western Xia written manuscripts. The purpose of this paper is to study one of the manuscripts on the verso side, namely “Bazhong Cuzhong Fanduo” (八種粗重犯墮) which means “Eight Gross Transgressions”. Individual tantric classes have their own enumeration of precepts. Anuttara Yoga Tantra tradition abides by precepts such as the twenty-five uncontrived activities, samaya of the five Buddha families, the fourteen root downfalls, and the eight gross transgressions. Among them, the “Eight Gross Transgressions” manuscript, unique to Anuttara Yoga Tantra, is an important tantric material. Analysis of its content suggests that the manuscript “Bazhong Cuzhong Fanduo” belongs to the precepts of the Anuttara Yoga Tantra. The paper contains the manuscript’s full transcription as well as a comparison with the parallel text of ltung ba sbom po [Gross Transgressions] in Derge Tanjur and sDom-gSum rNam-Nges [Perfect Conduct: Ascertaining the Three Vows].

Abstract:
An effort to preserve and utilize manuscripts in this archipelago, especially religious manuscripts, is very important due to, at least, two reasons. Firstly, there has been abundant important information pertinent to religious phenomena in the manuscripts. Secondly, physical condition of the manuscripts has been increasingly fragile. Following the process of choosing the manuscript, the author has selected one of the manuscripts preserved in the State Museum of North Sumatra. This study employs the theory of philology, literature and history in analyzing the manuscript. Analyses are focused on the language used, the cultural background of the manuscript, and the social history of the region where it has been written. The findings of this study tell us that the manuscript, named Kashf al-Gharā’ib, is a classical Islamic manuscript which still has been well preserved at the State Museum of North Sumatra. It contains the scientific information of fiqh (Islamic law), especially discussing about the way of worshipping the God. The manuscript also consists of religious poems and problems of adab (ethics). Of the three topics discussed in this manuscript, I give considerable attention on worship and ethical issues.

As a note written directly by the copyist/owner of the manuscript outside the text of the manuscript, the colophon can serve as a source of information about the history of its manuscript. Not only that, colophons can also function as a source of past knowledge outside the manuscript’s tradition. This is as shown by the colophons contained in the Malay manuscripts collection of A.B. Cohen Stuart stored in the National Library of Indonesia. This research on colophon manuscripts was carried out using descriptive methods and philological work steps to analyze data sources in the form of colophons. The results of the analysis, it can be concluded that 38 Malay manuscripts from the collection of Cohen Stuart are estimated to have been collected during his duty as conservator at Bataviaasch Genootschap, Batavia (Jakarta) in 1862-1871. These manuscripts were copied and/or owned by as many as 22 copyists/owners who lived in 16 villages in Jakarta in the period 1863-1869, except for two manuscripts which are estimated to be dated to the 1840s. Most of the manuscripts were copied for commercial purposes, i.e. for rent or sale. In addition, this colophon analysis also reveals some of the history of the city of Jakarta in the 19th century, including the structure of government, the villages in Batavia, as well as the formation of the Betawi ethnicity and the livelihoods of its people.

This paper presents the manuscript collection of the Elči Ibrahim Pasha’s madrasa in Travnik. This collection contains 105 manuscript codices written in Arabic, Turkish and Persian. In the 1940s, the manuscript collection of this madrasa was transferred to the Gazi Husrev Bey library in Sarajevo, as part of a project that included the storage of manuscripts from all madrasas in Bosnia and Herzegovina in a suitable place. Nevertheless, even after that year, manuscripts continue to arrive in this library, so today it contains a solid manuscript collection. Although it was digitized in 2012 in the manuscript digitization project of the Bosnian manuscript collections by the Yunus Emre Institute, the catalogue of this manuscript collection has never been presented.

Historical evidence such as the ancient manuscripts that the author researched is not often found in this modern era. This is caused by a change in media carried out by legal or government officials so that the maintenance of these manuscripts is maintained and preserved. In this study, the author found one of the ancient manuscripts in Jorong Belubus, Limapuluh Kota Regency, where this manuscript already has several corruptions that have little chance of being used every day. This research aims to increase Islamic scientific knowledge and the existence of these ancient manuscripts can be further recorded and preserved so that they can be witnesses of Islamic civilization that occurred in that environment. This study focuses more on the characteristics of the manuscript as well as data related to the ancient manuscript, description of the manuscript, then analysis of the manuscript, why this manuscript exists, its purpose, why it is incomplete and the benefits of this book. This of course uses manuscript research methods (library research). The objectives or results of the manuscript research methodology can be the identity, condition and absence of the manuscript. The application and methodology of teirseibuit is the description of various physical aspects of a manuscript which include various characters or letters, various languages, and external characteristics of the manuscript. So several points can be produced in this research in the form of characteristics of mushafs that do not have colophon, have some corruption, use Usmani and Ilma'i rasm, but in this ancient manuscript it is more likely to use Imla'i rasm, and this manuscript will remain the main icon for the people. Naqsbandiyah order because Sheikh Mudo Abdul Qadim himself was a teacher as a great scholar, especially for the Naqsbandiyah order.

This research found 106 religious manuscript consist of seven owner of manuscripts spreading in Tidore Island and Maitara Island. Abstract This paper introduces a tool which offers scholars a new way to visualize the structure of manuscripts. The Structural Visualization of Manuscripts (or StruViMan) is a web-based application, developed as part of the Paratexts of the Greek Bible Project, a European Research Council project based in Munich. Drawing on the principles of structural codicology, StruViMan is able to translate the different stages of a manuscript’s development into a visual model based on the codex’s physical, historical layers and aims to facilitate the comparison of manuscripts. It can be used by any web-connected manuscript database from any cultural area and does not require the presence of electronic images. This presentation begins with a short survey of the principles underpinning the tool’s conception and development, followed by a demonstration of how manuscript data from both biblical and non-biblical Greek codices are transformed into interactive, customizable visualizations with varying display modes. We will also touch upon StruViMan’s technical aspects as an open-access web service, available to any software or database able to call its API using the correct parameters. We close with a preview of new features currently under development, including the ability to “reconstruct” a manuscript whose composite parts are presently in different repositories.

AbstractThe manuscripts of the Iranian Pahlavi Yasna contain two consecutive colophons, the second of which relates the story of how their common ancestor manuscript, which combines the Avestan text of the Yasna with its Pahlavi version, was created. It is argued that Rōstahm Dād-Ohrmazd produced the first Pahlavi Yasna manuscript by taking the Avestan text from one manuscript and the Pahlavi text of a manuscript by Farrbay Srōšayār. Furthermore, it is argued that Rōstahm Dād-Ohrmazd wrote this manuscript both for himself and for Mahayār Farroxzād, who was from the province of Bīšāpuhr. The manuscript of Rōstahm Dād-Ohrmazd was then copied by Māhwindād Narmāhān, who composed the second colophon. This article also discusses the first colophon as it appears in the Iranian Pahlavi Yasna manuscript T54, which differs from other manuscripts of this group as it includes a passage written by a scribe called Kāyūs. It is argued that T54 was produced by Kāyūs, who added this passage to its first colophon. Furthermore, variant readings of these two colophons in two manuscripts of the Iranian Pahlavi Yasna, which also include Kāyūs's passage, are discussed. Unlike T54, Kāyūs's passage forms a separate colophon in these two manuscripts. It is suggested the two colophons are corrected according to the mindset of their respective scribes.

Through the digitization of rare or special manuscripts, academics have researched the impact of digitization and its relationship with the physical manuscript itself. Past literature has focused on how the digital can complement the physical, the changing manuscript’s identity when its digitized, and past research around the quality of a digital surrogate. The importance of carefully considering the impact of the quality of a digitized manuscript is essential. However, every edition (physical or digital) changes in some way and moves further from the original, be it an issue with the digitization or pages being removed or altered in the physical manuscript. Though some scholars find that content may be lost when digitized, there can also be more information added by cataloguers. Ultimately, digital surrogates allow for wider access, but their quality must be considered and properly addressed in research. A researcher who is aware of and within their work clearly states the relationship between the digital surrogate and the physical manuscript will find that it is a great support for any researcher.

This manuscript was handwritten by the deputy king of the Ismahaayana Landak palace, namely King Pangeran Mangku Gusti Bujang (1899–1922). The method used is a qualitative method and this type of research is an analytical description, and considering the object of study is the Qur'anic Manuscript, the data collection is based on the facts found in the field. This study was conducted using a philological approach, focusing on two main topics. First, about the characteristics of the Qur'anic manuscripts. Second, how are the codicological aspects contained in the manuscript of the Al-Qur'an Ismahayana Landak manuscript. The conclusion of this article is that the use of rasm in the manuscript of the Qur'anic manuscripts contains two rules, namely the Ottoman (Utsmani) rasm and the imla'i rasm. While Scholia is divided into two, namely scholia to maqra and scholia to juz. This manuscript is proof that the copying process was carried out by handwriting and rote memorization. As proof that there are errors in the writing and placement of vowels. Furthermore, the use of this manuscript paper still uses cardboard from bark because each sheet of manuscript still feels wood grain and the binding is from bark, and there is a logo on one of the manuscript sheets which proves that the Qur'an is indeed from the Ismahayana Landak palace.

This article focuses on Quranic manuscripts that are believed to be attributed to Prince Diponegoro. This Quranic manuscript stored in Magelang and was brought by Prince Diponegoro during the Java War (1825-1830 AD), which he led. Previous researchers have studied Prince Diponegoro’as a religious figure, but no one has examined Quranic manuscripts that credited to his legacy. Through the Philology approach, this paper shows authentic Quranic manuscripts originating from the time of Prince Diponegoro's life. Illumination with Javanese floral style in the manuscript has similarities with the Quranic manuscript collection of the Pura Pakualaman museum with a watermark that shows paper production around 1823-1824 AD. The content of the manuscript strengthened the data on the use of Imla'i rasm, and reading symbols in the Manuscripts shows the characteristics of the development of Qur'anic science in the 19th century.

Shui manuscripts provide a historical testimony of the national identity and spirit of the Shui people. In response to the lack of a high-quality Shui manuscripts dataset, we collected Shui manuscript images in the Shui area and used various methods to enhance them. Through our efforts, we created a well-labeled and sizable Shui manuscripts dataset, named Shuishu_T, which is the largest of its kind. Then, we applied target detection technology for Shui manuscript characters recognition. Specifically, we compared the advantages and disadvantages of Faster R-CNN, you only look once (YOLO), and single shot multibox detector (SSD), and subsequently chose Faster R-CNN to detect and recognize Shui manuscript characters. We trained and tested 111 classes of Shui manuscript characters with Faster R-CNN and achieved an average recognition rate of 87.8%. Finally, we designed a WeChat applet that can be used to quickly identify Shui manuscript characters in images obtained by scanning Shui manuscripts with a mobile phone. This work provides a basis for realizing the recognition of characters in Shui manuscripts on mobile terminals. Our research enables the intangible cultural heritage of the Shui people to be preserved, promoted, and shared, which is of great significance for the conservation and inheritance of Shui manuscripts.

The concept of “Just Rule” historically served to shape a king’s image and bolster the monarchy’s structure, often emulated by courtiers seeking to be part of the inner circle and perpetuating the idea of a Just Ruler. Influenced by the king’s interests, figures like Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar (r. 1848-1896) fostered monarchic strength through praises and art, particularly in the Nasiri era. These illustrations, blending literature and visual art, became sought-after for adorning manuscripts and enhancing printed books during this period. This study examines Nasir al-Din Shah's portrayal in the One Thousand and One Nights manuscript (1852-1859), overseen by Abul-Hassan Ghaffari, Saniʿ al-Mulk (d. 1865). Characters resembling Nasir al-Din Shah appear throughout the manuscript. The study aims to analyze these images in relation to the manuscript’s content and their role in the discourse on portrait illustrations. Additionally, it explores how the idea of Just Rule was perpetuated by the patrons and artists involved in creating this manuscript.

Jāmiʿ at-Tawārīkh ‘Compendium of Chronicles’ is the Qādir ʿAli beg’s historical work written in 1602. The primary source of this work more likely did not reach our days. However, today two lists (St. Petersburg manuscript and Kazan manuscript), three fragments (a fragment from Kyshgary, a fragment from the first London manuscript, and a fragment from the second London manuscript), and two more manuscripts (Paris manuscript and Berlin manuscript) are known as related to the Qādir ʿAli beg’s ‘Compendium of Chronicles’, although the authorship of the last two manuscripts is questionable.The article analyses all currently known lists and fragments of Qādir ʿAli beg’s work. The study did not identify major textological discrepancies among the two lists and three fragments except for some minor differences in spelling. The two lists complement each other and most probably were copied from the same source. The fragments of the work do not carry any additional information from the one present in the lists; hence, they do not carry any textological value. However, the fragments are important evidence of the significance of Qādir ʿAli beg’s work. The location of London manuscripts is of particular interest, raising the question of the appearance of two fragments that are found in the ‘Compendium of Chronicles’ in Britain. A feature of the London manuscripts is the presence in the text of postscripts from the margins of the St. Petersburg manuscript, presented as a concordance of words.

Though the contents are very useful for today's life. The effort that needs to be done is to digitize the manuscript, while the original manuscript can be preserved by means of preservation. Digitization is not only to preserve the contents of the manuscript but also to maintain health and the environment. We managed to digitize four of the 14 manuscripts in the Lasem Mosque library. The potential of ancient manuscripts in Lasem still needs to be traced again considering that Lasem is an old city where an old pesantren was founded in Java.

This study aimed to determine preventive and curative ancient manuscript preservation policies and constraints in carrying out ancient manuscript preservation activities at the Pangeran Sumedang Foundation library. While this research tries to examine the preservation of ancient manuscripts, especially the ancient manuscripts of the Waruga Jagat book and the Sumedang chronicle book. The research approach used is a qualitative approach with a case study type. Based on the results of the research, it is known that the birth of an ancient manuscript preservation policy, especially the ancient manuscript of Kita Waruga Jagat and the Sumedang Chronicle book, is because these two ancient manuscripts have very important informational and historical values regarding the founding of the Sumedang Larang Kingdom. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the manuscript is hundreds of years old and its condition has started to deteriorate, so it is necessary to carry out preservation activities. This preservation activity is carried out using prevention and repair or through a transfer of media forms. Abstract In this article, we utilized large-scale statistical analysis and data visualization techniques of the greatest collection in the world of Hebrew manuscript metadata records to develop a new methodology for quantitative investigation of the palaeographic, geographic, and temporal characteristics of historical manuscripts. The study aims to explore whether and to what extent the script type of the manuscript and its changes over time can be used to automatically predict and complete missing geospatial data of the manuscripts. To this end, various ontological entities were used as features to train supervised machine-learning algorithms to predict the places of writing of manuscripts which were often absent in the catalogue records. The obtained results show that while the script type as an only feature might not be sufficient for prediction of the location of the manuscript’s writing, its combination with temporal data of the manuscript yielded about 80% accuracy. Eventually, our system was able to complete the missing places of writing for over 60% of the manuscripts in the corpus. Moreover, we found that through typical and marginal script types in different regions and their changes over time, it is possible to draw the migration map of the Jewish communities over the centuries. This reinforces the findings of historical research on Jewish migration patterns and communal formation. For example, the waves of immigration from Western Europe can be seen clearly from the second half of the 13th century, which continued until the 17th century and greatly increased the Eastern European Jewish community.

Manuscripts as cultural documents and literary references for other sciences must be made aware of their existence in the current millennium, as many manuscripts' contents remain unknown. One of them is Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA), which is revealed in the manuscript text of the Tatamba mantra and is used by the Baduy indigenous community to boost endurance and immunity. The Tatamba manuscript's significance to Baduy TOGA must be maximized in order to determine the kind, function, dose, processing technique, and therapy actions, as well as the usage of TOGA for health maintenance based on the Tatamba manuscript. Manuscripts are available in various regions in Indonesia, one of them in Palembang. Malay manuscripts are texts written in Malay which are generally Arabic-Malay (Jawi). The existence of this ancient manuscript located in vulnerable society will be damaged . The importance of biological knowledge to this text makes provision for society and government in an effort to keep the extinct. Objectives of the research are to know the form and type of destruction of manuscripts, factors causing damage, to identify the types of biota and insects that destroyed and also how to cope with the presence of insects and biota in Malay manuscript storage. The research with a descriptive quantitative approach. The sampling of insects and biota by hand collecting method. Identified insect use to morphometric technique. The results are found 11 species of insects from 5 orders and 6 families. Cause damage to manuscripts in Palembang include as physical and chemical factors. Manuscripts is the result of handwriting which contains various things such as thoughts, community culture, history of one's life journey and customs in the past. Religious texts are related to the spread of religion in Jember, such as there are Islamic boarding school texts for the spread of Islam and there are Bible texts for the spread of Christianity in Jember.. The research was conducted using a philological research method with a codicological approach. There are several steps in this research method. First, tracing the manuscripts obtained from the people who inherited the manuscripts. Second, an inventory of manuscripts is carried out by means of field studies, namely visiting directly the location where the manuscripts are stored by the community who is the owner or inheritor of the manuscripts. Third, preservation by caring for and maintaining the manuscript to prevent the loss of the information contained in the manuscript due to damage to the manuscript due to certain factors. The results of this study explain aspects of codicology, manuscript descriptions and efforts to save the findings of eight ancient manuscripts in Jember Regency. .

Abstract Although manuscript digitalization helps to safeguard old manuscripts, the challenges of old manuscripts’ preservation remain present. Old manuscripts are increasingly neglected and hard to access. This study aims to shed light on the preservation of manuscript contents as it is being done through various digitalization programs by a variety of national and international institutions in Indonesia. This study found that, paradoxically, the availability of many digital manuscripts does not enhance the study of their contents. Similarly, attention to the physical preservation of these manuscripts has also not seen a significant improvement. By using philological, codicological, and anthropological approaches, this study gives contribution to enhance the understanding on the needs of manuscript digitalization as an integral effort to preserve their contents and physical preservation.

The author re-examines the complete-works manuscripts of Machaut and the question of his role in their production, in light of recent art-historical and philological studies. The discussion proceeds in chronological order, and offers new details about each of the extant complete-works manuscripts, as well as about a few of the lost manuscripts. In addition, a new complete-works manuscript at the National Library of Wales is identified. The study charts Machaut's evolving view of manuscript organization, and speculates on the shape of Machaut's exemplar material and its effect on manuscript organization and the transmission of the works. The original index of manuscript A is found to be a document of primary importance that establishes a new departure in the organization of Machaut's manuscripts, prescribing an order to be followed by the scribe as the manuscript itself was copied. Finally, an examination of the transmission of the motet "Qui es promesses/Ha Fortune/Et non est" provides us with a caveat: even a tradition of music as rich as Machaut's could become corrupted at a very early point, working against Machaut's best efforts to insure the accurate transmission of his works.

Ancient manuscripts are artifacts that indicate high intellectual abilities in old civilizations. The content is very valuable as well as a means of communicating and expressing ideas that can provide information about civilization and past life. Javanese society is one of the communities who inherited ancient manuscripts. The manuscript is decorated with beautiful illuminations that signify the aesthetics of the creators. The illumination has a n implied value and becomes a trace of the cultural identity of the society. The values implied in the manuscript will be much more useful if it is disseminated to provide high moral understanding and insight. In addition, ancient manuscripts can be a source of inspiration for creation that can support efforts to perpetuate cultural heritage in the archipelago. This paper discusses the results of research originating from the transformation process of ancient manuscript illumination into batik. The research method used is descriptive qualitative by making batik motifs based on visual manuscript illumination supported by the results of interviews with ancient manuscript experts and batik experts. Thus, the results of manuscript comparisons can be known for their similarities and differences after analyzing and criticizing manuscripts, because they can compare by analyzing, reading carefully and relating to the opinions of several educational figures. Based on the results of the comparison of manuscripts carried out, the content of the discussion of the manuscript of La Ode Ismail Ahmad is more specific than the manuscript of Said Ahmad Suliaman. And the concept of teacher performance standards written by Said Ahmad Sulaiman is good to be applied in the education system. The teacher has a very important role in the study.

The Catalan translation of the Legenda Aurea by Jacobus de Voragine has been considered by Meyer and by Corominesas a version very close to its Latin model. However, a review of the preserved manuscripts allows us to note remarkabledifferences from the Latin model as well as among the Catalan manuscripts. In this work we take as a basis the manuscriptE (ms. N-III-5, Madrid, Real Biblioteca del Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial) to analyse structural, editorialand textual changes in the Catalan compilation: structural changes, such as those related to the arrangement of chapters;editorial changes, such as the deletion of extensive fragments in some chapters or the replacement of the version of achapter with another one other than that by Voragine; and textual changes, such as the variants that characterize the twobranches into which the translation evolves. These changes allow us to characterize the formation and the evolution of thiscompilation. We take as a point of reference manuscript E, representative of one of the two branches of the translation,in contrast with P (ms. Espagnol 44, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France), representative of the other. In E thereare important internal differences in the wording of each chapter and differences with respect to the other preservedmanuscripts. In some chapters, the wording of E is very different from that of P, with a less literal version of the Latin text,a wording that will serve as a model for the later print tradition. Editing this compilation based on manuscript E involvestaking into account the rest of the preserved manuscript evidence, as well as the Latin text, in addition to considering thechapters added in this manuscript.

This paper aims to find out the digital Malay manuscript as a source of studies in the field of Islamic education. Malay manuscript is one of the nation's documents written manually using Arabic-Malay characters and in Malay. This means that the Malay manuscript is a stroke of the local genius of the nation and is an intellectual icon of the people of his day. But along with advances in technology, the Malay manuscript also experienced development through this technology by means of digitalization. In terms of methodology, this paper is a study of historical and cultural heritage involving Malay manuscript, so this study uses descriptive qualitative methods that are linked to analysis and interpretation and finally focuses on content analysis. At the end of the study it was found that in addition to the Quran and Hadith which are the sources of Islamic education studies, it turns out that the digital Malay manuscript can be used as the next source, because the Malay manuscript is a legacy of cultural heritage that is loaded with noble values of life such as social, political, religious, educational, culture, economics, language, literature and so on. Therefore, digital Malay manuscript is an ICT-based innovation that can be used as a source of study of Islamic education. Digital Malay manuscripts are very easy to obtain because in various places where Malay manuscripts have been digitalized, scientists can use them. In addition, digital Malay manuscripts can be accessed through the internet with various sites.

The Karang Mindu manuscript is one of the ancient manuscripts originating from Kerinci, one of the collections of Bakhtiar Hanif, which we know that these ancient manuscripts are very important to protect, because they are relics of our ancestors that have high historical value. Not only that, from ancient manuscripts we can find out about the culture of the past about the illumination on the bamboo manuscript "Karang Mindu" collection of Bakhtiar Hanif Kerinci. The purpose of this article is to find out about the manuscript. Overall, the method used in this research is to use a qualitative method using a literature study, by collecting the main source from the EAP Library with documentation number EAP 117/63/1/15, besides that the author also collects sources from various previous studies, books, articles, journals, which are related to the research theme. The result of this research is the content of the manuscript text Karang Mindu explains about a poet whose love is unrequited, besides that there are also interesting illuminations such as Pucuk Rebung, and Keluk Paku. The manuscript motive also describes the life of ancient people who always utilized nature for their needs. Therefore, studying the illuminations in the manuscript helps to strengthen and maintain Kerinci's cultural heritage or local wisdom.

Two German libraries which hold collections of Oriental manuscripts again have enlarged their stock of Ethiopian manuscripts. The Berlin State Library: there is a dated Sǝnkǝssar representing the still living manuscript tradition. Without concrete dating (which exists) a cataloguer surely might come to a wrong judgment concerning the date of writing the manuscript, but the date is clear: 20th cent. The second manuscript is a gift from Professor Dr. Walter W. Müller (Marburg): the unbound parchment leaves contain chronicles in Amharic concerning the history of Ethiopia and Šäwa written in the second half of the 19th cent. Then a collection of Hymns (Sälam), a Psalter and a small manuscript containing a text which is used as protection of the soul either during funeral rites or – as it is the case here – as a separate text serving the daily protection of a human being. The second library: the University Library Tübingen with a long tradition of collecting Oriental and Ethiopic manuscripts as well, now has acquired two manuscripts: a dated Mäzmurä Dawit of the second half of the 19th cent. which also represents the manuscript tradition at its best and a parchment scroll containing prayers for protecting a female person, but in which the originally restricted purpose has been changed into a general protective function.

This study focused on the Qur’anic mushaf manuscript, the heritage collection of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, stored in the library of Tebuireng pesantren. In this Pesantren, there are many collections of manuscripts, but this Qur’anic manuscript is never discussed bythe researchers who scrutinize KH. Hasyim Asy’ari’s collection works. The present study had three stages, namely identification of manuscript, criticism of corrupt texts, and the form of scholia manuscript. The purposes of this study were to explain the identity of the manuscript and classify the corrupt and scholia forms that occurred in the Qur'anic manuscript at Tebuireng Pesantren.The method used was the criticism of the texts through the inventory of all faults that occurred in the copying based on the Qur'anic manuscript that had been in tashih. This study found out that (1) the manuscript of the Qur’anicmushaf, the heritage collection of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, had many mistakes in the process of copying. Frequent mistakes lied in punctuation errors, dots in letters, excess letters, or lack of letters; and (2) The Scholia manuscript form of the Qur’anicmushaf, the heritage of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, was used to give clarification on the mistakes that occurred in the texts.
