Abstract:
In the Soviet time, libraries only preserved the names of private and, occasionally, institutional collections. Standalone manuscripts or small sets of manuscripts would become part of the collections in national languages. The information concerning the origins of new arrivals was not considered valuable enough to keep record of. Such was the case of Fond 182 of the Manuscript Department of the Russian National Library, commonly referred to as the Schneerson Library. Close examination of the content, handwriting, binding, stickers and owners’ inscription may allow us to identify some of the manuscript’s former owners. Thus, the collection contains not only the manuscripts of the Schneerson family proper, but also those belonging to Zelig Persits, Yaakov Maze, Benyamin Epstein, Bentsion Ettlinger, and the Karaite national library “Karay Bitikligi”, as well as the materials – mostly fragments – that should have been ascribed to the Günzburg Collection and some “trophy” manuscripts that were brought over to the USSR after the WWII and due to the lack of qualified scholars, wound up in Fond 182.

Toftgaard, Anders. "Landkort over en samling. Hvad katalogposterne kan fortælle om Otto Thotts håndskriftsamling – og om katalogisering." Fund og Forskning i Det Kongelige Biblioteks Samlinger 58 (March 9, 2019): 129. http://dx.doi.org/10.7146/fof.v58i0.125301.

Abstract:
Anders Toftgaard: Mapping a collection. What the catalogue records can tell us about Otto Thott’s manuscript collection and about manuscript cataloguing. This article deals with the manuscript collection of Count Otto Thott (1703-1785) and with manuscript cataloguing. Otto Thott was the single greatest private book collector in the history of Denmark and of inestimable importance for the Royal Danish Library, since he bequeathed his collection of manuscripts (4154 catalogue numbers) and books printed before 1531 (6059 catalogue numbers) to the Royal Library. In the manuscript collection, the inclusion of his collection marks the division between the Old Royal Collection (GKS) and the New Royal Collection (NKS). Many of the treasures in the rare books collection come from his library, and his definition of paleotypes (books printed before 1531) has (in the 20th c.) determined the definition of the collection of post-incunabula. Otto Thott did not write owners’ marks or notes in his books and he left very little archival material concerning the ways in which he created his library. Regrettably, the literary correspondence mentioned in his will has not survived. The article analyses a data set consisting of all catalogue records (in MARC format) concerning manuscripts from Otto Thott’s manuscript collection. These catalogue records in the library system derive from the catalogue made by Rasmus Nyerup (excluding oriental manuscripts) and published in 1795. When, towards the end of the 19th centrury, the alphabetical and the systematical catalogues of the collection of western manuscripts were produced, the entries in Nyerup’s catalogue were copied by hand without being revised. After the IT revolution, when the catalogue records of the systematical catalogue were transferred to a digital database of records, these records were copied once again without revision. It is shown what kind of errors from the catalogue of 1795 were still present in the on line catalogue in 2019. The quantitative analysis shows that the bulk of the manuscripts in Thott’s manuscript collection are manuscripts in Danish and German from Thott’s own century. The subject headings with most entries are Theology, History, History of Denmark, Danish Biography and Literature. As to provenances there is information concerning the manuscript’s provenance before the inclusion in Otto Thoot’s library in 17 % of the catalogue records. The analysis shows that Otto Thott’s manuscript collection was a universal collection with no specific preferences. The conclusion argues that it is necessary to get information from the various printed catalogs of the manuscript collection into the digital library system and that parts of Thott’s manuscript collection deserve revisiting and recataloguing. The Royal Danish Library’s manuscript collection might explore alternatives to the MARC-format for manuscript cataloguing. In a wider context, it is argued that Otto Thott’s library should be considered a knot in a network, and that data from the many book auction catalogues should be extracted and used for mapping the destinies of specific books and manuscripts.

Abstract:
The author of the article investigates the problems of cataloging and curatorship in the British Chagatai Manuscript Library. It starts with a brief overview of some of the previous work done to catalog manuscripts, and then an overview of how these collections compare to those of other institutions in Western Europe. In doing so, the author provides examples of chagatai manuscripts in the British Library from each region in which the language was used, delving deeper into the origin of the objects and the reasons why they could be found by the British Museum and the British library. They also end with reflections on how the composition of the collections signifies British interest in Turkic cultural production, and how we can go beyond this to create a more holistic view of Chaghatay literature and textual culture

The article deals with the results of archeographic studies, carried out by the Institute of history, archeology and ethnography of DSC RAS in 2017-2018.The introductory part covers methods of an archeographic work in examining manuscripts: each manuscript is described in detail, according to the description plan approved by the Institute’s Department of Oriental Studies, and includes positions that give a detailed description of a descriptive unit under study and which forms the basis of archeographic research. The main body reviews archeographic studies in 2017 in 4 regions of Dagestan, where manuscripts were discovered: 3 new manuscript collections in Akushinsky district, 2 collections in Levashinsky district, 2 collections in Kayakentsky district, 10 collections in Karabudakhentsky one – overall 17 collections, including manuscripts and a large number of old-printed books.Among the arabographic materials, there are findings in following branches of medieval Arabic science: Quran and Quran disciplines, Quran commentaries, tajwid (the art of reading Quran), Arabic grammar, rhetoric, lexicography, fiqh, dogmatics, al-sira, poetics, propaedeutics, hadith, logics, astronomy.Among Turkic materials, the most interesting one is the arabographic manuscript “Derbend-nameh” with texts, mainly on history, in the Kumyk language. The total number of manuscripts and old-printed books found and studied in 2017 is more than 300 units. They date from the 15th to the 19th centuries. In 2018, the nature and focus of archeographic research changed: the task was set to narrow the gap between field and traditional archaeography. In this regard, archeographic research in that year was directed, along with searching and collecting of material, mainly for research, preparation for publication and publication of manuscript collections – in particular, of two private manuscript collections of the Keleb region of the Shamil district of the Republic of Dagestan: the collection of Gitinmagomedov Usman-Hadji from the village of Hinda and the collection of Hasanov Karimula from Somoda village..

AbstractThis article contributes to the established scholarship on Sir William Jones (d.1794) by providing a detailed overview and analysis of the Arabic and Persian manuscript collection that Jones acquired both before arriving in India in 1784, and during his time living in Kolkata. 118 manuscripts in Arabic, Persian and Urdu and 69 Sanskrit manuscripts, as well as nine Chinese manuscripts, were transferred to the Royal Society library by Jones in 1792. These were then transferred to the India Office Library in 1876 and are currently housed in the British Library. As well as an in-depth survey of these manuscripts, this article provides important information on the manuscripts which remained in the Jones's possession after 1792 and which were sold, along with the rest of Lady Jones's (d.1829) library, at auction in 1831 after her death. Within this overview of the Arabic and Persian manuscript collections, there will be a sustained focus on the methods of acquiring manuscripts and Jones's curatorial management of his library.

Abstract:
The manuscripts have been proof of the existence of knowledgeable civilization society. They disseminated knowledge through writings and each writer can be used until now. Various aspects can be learned from the manuscript including codicological aspects, philological as well as textual studies. This study focuses on Madrasah al-Ahmadiah al-Islamiah located in Narathiwat, Thailand, a madrasah that serves as a center for collecting and restoring manuscripts. Hence, this study is carried out in accordance with two main objectives: 1) to study the background of the Madrasah al-Ahmadiah al-Islamiah as a center for manuscripts’ collection, and 2) to identify the collection of manuscripts and areas of knowledge. This article also discusses the process of collecting manuscripts. A qualitative approach has been conducted in order to collect the data that consists of conducting interviews and analyzing related documents. The findings of this study focus on only 70 copies of Quran manuscripts of various sizes that have been conserved. In addition, the collection of manuscripts other than the Quran can be divided into 15 fields of knowledge. Furthermore, there are 2 forms of the material collected in this center: writing forms and artifacts. The study is expected to provide exposure to the conservation of the Malay Archipelago’s manuscripts as well as uplifting the institutions involved.

Abstract:
Two German libraries which hold collections of Oriental manuscripts again have enlarged their stock of Ethiopian manuscripts. The Berlin State Library: there is a dated Sǝnkǝssar representing the still living manuscript tradition. Without concrete dating (which exists) a cataloguer surely might come to a wrong judgment concerning the date of writing the manuscript, but the date is clear: 20th cent. The second manuscript is a gift from Professor Dr. Walter W. Müller (Marburg): the unbound parchment leaves contain chronicles in Amharic concerning the history of Ethiopia and Šäwa written in the second half of the 19th cent. Then a collection of Hymns (Sälam), a Psalter and a small manuscript containing a text which is used as protection of the soul either during funeral rites or – as it is the case here – as a separate text serving the daily protection of a human being. The second library: the University Library Tübingen with a long tradition of collecting Oriental and Ethiopic manuscripts as well, now has acquired two manuscripts: a dated Mäzmurä Dawit of the second half of the 19th cent. which also represents the manuscript tradition at its best and a parchment scroll containing prayers for protecting a female person, but in which the originally restricted purpose has been changed into a general protective function.

McGuire, Nancy Ross. "The Dornie Manuscripts." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.288358.

Full text
Abstract:
The notebooks and papers of Captain Alexander Matheson (c. 1833-1897), a shipowner from Dornie, Kintail, are commonly referred to as the Dornie Manuscripts.  The bulk of the collection consists of Gaelic verse and song taken down from the oral recitation of old people in Wester Ross, and composed, for the most-part, by poets native to that area. The main aim of this thesis is to present a representative selection of Gaelic verse from Alexander Matheson’s collection.  Sixteen texts have been selected for full editorial treatment, ten of which are not known from any other written source.  These texts are presented in a standardised Gaelic orthography, in chronological order, together with appropriate notes and references.  Also included are relevant indexes, appendices, and a glossary. A substantial part of the thesis consists of transcripts of all the Gaelic verse from the Dornie Manuscripts, with cross-references to other versions and appropriate notes.  An index of the poets featured in the collection is included. The introduction to the thesis contains a brief biography of the collector, a description of non-verse material in the manuscripts, and an account of previous work based on the Dornie Manuscripts.

Usick, Patricia Hilary. "William John Banke's collection of drawings and manuscripts relating to Ancient Nubia." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1998. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317809/.

Full text
Abstract:
The portfolio of fifteen-hundred drawings made by the wealthy and brilliant William John Bankes (1786-1855) and his artists, travelling and working in Egypt and Nubia between 1815 and 1822, constitutes an important early scholarly record. Of particular interest are sites and monuments in Nubia and the Sudan, many of which are now destroyed, damaged, or have been moved due to the creation of Lake Nasser. Together with Henry Salt, Henry William Beechey, L-M-A. Linant de Bellefonds, and Alessandro Ricci, Bankes produced plans, views, descriptions, and, above all, remarkably accurate copies of reliefs and inscriptions. This mass of information was never arranged and published. A catalogue raisonné of the Nubian drawings covers the sites running between Dabod and Naqa, including Gebel Barkal, Meroë, and Musawwarat; many virtually unknown at that time. The catalogue provides the data for an assessment of the archaeological and epigraphic significance of the record. In addition, the unsigned drawings can now be attributed to individual artists on stylistic criteria, and, using unpublished journals and correspondence, the two journeys of 1815 and 1818-9 can be reconstructed. Many previously unrecognised drawings can now be identified, and sections of texts of particular interest recorded on the drawings have been hand-copied in an appendix. Bankes' role as a pioneer in the field of Egyptology, and his contribution to the study of decipherment are also examined.

Du, Toit Elizabeth. "The music editions in the Scott Collection of the Music Library of the University of Stellenbosch before and up to 1800, excluding church music : an annotated catalogue with some notes on printers and publishers." Abstract:
Thesis (MMus)--Stellenbosch University, 1993.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis can be summarised under the following headings: Unlocking the Scott Collection to the music world The University of Stellenbosch is in the possession of the valuable Scott Collection, as was bought from the estate of Gerrit Wessels, the beneficiary of Commander Michael Scott. The latter emigrated to South Africa because of health reasons, where he played a valuable role in the music circles of Cape Town. Music editions, manuscripts, gramophone records, and writings on music form about 20% of the Scott Collection. Providing music editions with RISM numbers and the international implication thereof The research had to determine whether editions could be listed in the RISM. This international inventory of first and early music editions lists all known and existing editions before and up to the year 1800. There are editions in the Scott Collection for example, which are some of the only few first edition copies in the world, A detailed description of the RISM and its activities are discussed in detail in Chapter 2. Creating an user-friendly catalogue for the US Music Library It was considered a great matter of importance to create an user-friendly catalogue for research purposes. The editions discussed in this thesis are therefore presented in table-form. Introducing further research possibilities Through the survey done on the applicable music editions, it was discovered that 111 editions in the Scott Collections could be listed in the RISM. Seeing that no editions harboured in South Africa are listed in the RISM at present, this matter are naturally of international importance. This also creates opportunities for further research and international publications. Conservation of old paper It became evident during the course of the research survey that the University of Stellenbosch was unaware of the monetary and international historical value of the music editions in the Scott Collection. The collection is in danger of perishing, as it is not preserved according to international standards of conserving old paper. It is also not adequately protected from fire and theft hazards. This matter and some suggestions to improve the situation, were brought under the attention of the university authorities (see Chapter 9).

Abstract:
Spanish
Ph.D.
The purpose of this dissertation is to produce a critical edition of Álvaro de Luna's 15th century manuscript, Libro de las claras e virtuosas mugeres. This Castilian text is a compilation of biographies of good and virtuous women similar to that of the widely studied De claris mulieribus by Giovanni Boccaccio. Scholars however, have neglected Luna's version for various reasons that are discussed within this dissertation. Libro de las claras e virtuosas mugeres is a significant work because it complements other texts within the genre of defense literature and provides a good argument against the misogynistic texts in the debate on women in the Middle Ages. Within this dissertation, the Introduction serves to orient the reader through the debate on women in 15th century Castile and to contextualize the Libro de las claras e virtuosas mugeres within it. Through the discussion of the debate on women in medieval Iberia, we will show how Luna's work is a necessary, but forgotten element. Also pertinent is the notorious past of don Álvaro, and how this has negatively impacted the reception of his work. This dissertation also compiles all critical studies and editions currently in print and discusses their merits. Finally in the Introduction, we explain how we took into account Bernard Cerquiglini's concept of variance and John Dagenais' theory that in order to come close to the medieval reading of the text, it is necessary to replicate the manuscripts, not to modernize them. Thus, we produced transcriptions that were as close to the original texts as possible, rather than attempting to correct or modernize them. In order to produce the critical edition necessary for a proper study of the Libro de las claras e virtuosas mugeres, this dissertation contains two transcriptions of the two oldest extant manuscripts: ms. B (2654) and ms. S (207). Within ms. B we also provide a critical apparatus, which shows the lexical and orthographical differences between the two. Additionally for the benefit of the reader, we provide four Appendices: the missing chapter of the Queen of Sheba (not included in ms. B), a list of all the women Luna included in his work, and facsimilar samples of both manuscripts. It is our desire to promote a renewed interest in this forgotten, yet extremely important 15th century Castilian manuscript.

This work is in focus on the collection of the manuscripts linked to the short stories â The Letterâ and âThe Dogâ, both belonging to the book They say the dogs see things, 1st and 2nd editions, in order to undestand the itinerary of the writting of the author from Ceara, Moreira Campos. For this purpose, we have based this work on the fundamentals of Genetic Criticism theory, a new current of research in the field of the arts, that is aimed at demonstrating the process of the artistic creation, making use of inferencies about the used procedures starting from the marks left by the author in the way of his creation. This study is structured on: presentation, five chapters, conclusion, attacheds and bibliographic references. In the first chapter, we described the origin of AMEC of UFC, because it is the source of our research, giving priority to Moreira Camposâ collection. We classified his documents and related his first results. In the second chapter, we presented a synthesis about Moreira Camposâ life and work: Personal and literary specifities. In the third chapter, we gave na account of trajectory of Genetic Criticism, her precursors, her origin in France and in Brazil, based on Almuth Gresillonâs view, the methodology idealized by Pierre- Marc de Biasi and readings enriched by brazilian researchers and foreignâs works, always refered in footnote. In the fourth chapter, we analyzed the corpus: its complexibility and particularity. We gave details of our work object, in other words, of the collection of integratings documents in the genetic dossiers of the short stories âThe Letterâ and âThe Dogâ, attached for us until the present moment: describing the origin of each version (support, writting instrument, phisical conditions). In the fifth chapter, we specified the criteria to the analyzis of our study object; compared the versions of each short stories, its various stages of elaboration, including those constants in editions revised by the author; indicated the variants between the compared versions, analyzing them in order to verify the procedures used by Moreira Camposin his production; and we developed hypotheses about his process of creation, starting from the marks of his campaingn about the text. In conclusion, we commented on our inferencies about the wings of Moreira Camposâ writting based on stylistic informations of the author and on theorical presupposings of Genetic Criticism. We perceived some recurring pratices of writting and rewritting that can allow unique characteristics of strategies used by the author in his literary creation, like adaptation of texts to news prototypes of language, the approuch of the fictional language and the search for the synthesis.

Abstract:
In the face of budget challenges, organizational strategy changes, and the new open access (OA) policy, the Pennsylvania State University Libraries (PSUL) are reevaluating negotiations and collections of ‘big deal’ journal packages. While a growing number of libraries are considering cancelling subscriptions to ‘big deals’, PSUL has been taking a careful approach in containing cost and making sure that faculty and students have access to resources that they need. Current efforts include: renegotiating ‘big deals’; cancelling low value titles in title-by-title agreements; obtaining single agreements for the entire Penn State; promoting green OA for future subscription negotiation purposes; and renegotiating OA related licensing terms. To achieve greater efficiency of acquisitions workflows and increase university-wide purchasing power, reallocation of the collection budget will be discussed in the near future. Auto deposit of accepted manuscripts from any Penn State author into ScholarSphere, Penn State’s institutional repository, as well as exploration of other OA models are also under consideration.

Abstract:
The functions of the biblical Slavic-Russian apocrypha in manuscript collections depend on their perception by the ancient Russian scribes and the literary context of the manuscript. Cognitive, interpretative, magical, historical functions are associated with different genre forms, both book and folk. Particularly considered is the «apocryphal riddle» of two brothers from the manuscript of the XVIth century Stockholm Royal Library and manuscripts of the XVIIIth century collections of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg).
