Full textThe Risālat al-Tuffāḥa, also known under the Latin title of Liber de Pomo, is a dialogue inspired by Plato's Phaedo, which features a dying Aristotle who manages to stay alive by smelling the scent of an apple. The philosopher answers his disciples' questions, as they are eager to learn the ultimate meaning of his teaching. He urges them to not fear death and to choose philosophy, the only path that leads to salvation. Nowadays forgotten, this text was however amongst the most popular works during the Middle Age. Famous in its Arabic version as early as the tenth century, it was then translated into Persian, Hebrew and Latin. It played a major role in the building of the medieval image of the philosopher. Its origin is however rather obscure: giving the settings that it presents, it has been suggested that this might be the translation of an ancient Greek work. Despite this hypothesis, the starting point of every research about the origin of this text still has to be the study of the Arabic version, as it is the text that has been used for the later translations. But this had, until now, never been thoroughly studied. Hence this work, that contains a critical edition of the Arabic text, a translation in French and a study that attempts to answer the question of the origins of this work and explores its rich Arabo-Persian reception

Full textThe zodiac has been known since ancient times but it was the Greek astronomers of the Hellenistic period who determined forms after the mythological figures and animals. The zodiac iconography inherited by the 8th and 9th century arabic-persian astronomers was largely inspired by ancient traditions. They subsequently updated it. Indeed, the iconography of the zodiac constellations had its codifier: the astronomer Abd al-rahman al-suff, then in the service of the buyid prince Adud al-dawla, who wrote “the book of the fixed stars”. The purpose of this iconography was mainly didactic, allowing constellations in the sky to be identified, hence a number of features characterizing the figures in all the copies made until the 19th century. A second type of zodiac appeared in the manuscripts starting in the 13th century: the astrological zodiac, which had a radically different purpose. The astrological zodiac was then used by astrologers to elaborate horoscopes but was often found in late 12th century east Anatolia or Persian metallic objects. Like the manuscripts as of the 14th century, these objects offer two types of iconography: - the first shows the signs conjugated with the planets in their various forms of associations, the most frequent being the planet associated to its house sign. - the second, frequently seen in miniatures starting in the 14th century, offers a new zodiac, purged so to speak, in which only some of the signs are perfectly associated to their planet: these are mixed series. We have underlined the major role of a focal point from which, we believe, a good part of the arabic-persian astrological zodiac may have originated: the city of Harran, in east turkey, whose inhabitants worshiped stars until the 9th century. The practice of the cult survived until the city was destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century. It was at this time that this so distinctive iconography of the planets and the zodiac started appearing and spreading. The zodiac is not restricted to the two areas of astronomy and astrology. It also extends to other forms, among which the pictorial and mystical conception of heavens symbolized by the bearers of the divine throne. Full textThe manuscript 1880 from The Escorial Library has not passed unacknowledged by the specialists in Aljamiado manuscripts (manuscripts written in old Spanish with Arabic characters), thanks to beauty of the colourful pages, a good state of preservation and most of all, its texts in verse, it was able to attract their attention. Nevertheless, this manuscript had hitherto been the object of partial studies. The aim of this thesis is to study in depth this peculiar manuscript, offering a new perspective on the Muslim population that lived under Christian ruling in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. First and foremost we demonstrate that its attribution to the Morisco period was erroneous and founded upon historiographical prejudice as well as reading mistakes. On the miscellany, we went upstream the Arabicsources and their Aljamiado versions to delimit those of our manuscript and elucidate the course of transmission ; then, we demonstrate that the ensemble contains ritual texts intended to be read by the imām to the Muslim congregation in Ágreda. Lastly, a new editing of the miscellany of Ágreda is proposed, together with plentiful review materials. Summarising, this historic and pragmatic approach to the manuscript allows to cast a fresh light onto the authors of aljamiado manuscripts and shed some on the mindset and cultural practices of a religious minority that was nonetheless well established in the society by the end of the Middle Ages

Full textOur thesis consists in two volumes ; the first one deals with the iconographic study and the analysis of text/image relationships in the arabic hippiatric manuscripts Khalīl Āghā 8 and Fatīh 3608/3609. The first one entitled kitāb al-baïtara of Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Ahnaf is stored at Dār al-kutub in Cairo and is dated of 1209. The second one of the same title as the first one is neither signed nor dated. It is kept in the Libary of the Süleymaniye in Istanbul. We have attempted to study these two manuscripts, so richly decorated, to discover what are the characteristics that link them together and what aspects separate them and also whether they are from the same author or not. In the second volume of this thesis, we transcribed the copy of the Cairo manuscript on computer to make it more readable and we have then translated it to French in order to make it accessible to non-Arabic researchers

Full textThe object of our work is the critical edition, the French translation and the mathematical analysis of the Liber mensurationum of Abu Bakr, of the Liber Saydi Abuothmi, of the Liber Aderameti and of the De superficierum divisionibus liber of Mulhammad al-Baghdadï. These four texts of the Arabian tradition are about two chapters of practical geometry : the measurement and the division of figures. The measurement has for object the determination of unknown quantities (lengths, areas, volumes) from quantities data. The division of figures consists in dividing a geometric figures in several parts according to properties and constraints fixed a priori. Our work takes in account sorne previous mathematical traditions - mesopotamian one, Greek and Latin of the late Antiquity - describing their activities of measurement and division of figures. We complete this description with a presentation of the practices of the muslim Orient and Occident. Thus, we put in evidence sorne characteristic elements of the practices of the Muslim west. These would suggest the existence of a tradition of the measurement and the division of figures to this region. Finally, the corpus that we present is a vector of the diffusion of the practices of geometry of the Arabian tradition in the Latin world. Indeed, the four texts are arabo-Latin translations that seem have been achieved in Andalus around the 12th century. Their analyses allow us to study an aspect of the appropriation of the Arabian science by the Latin

Full textThe indexing of handwritten scanned documents poses the problem of lines segmentation, if it fails, disabling the following steps of words extraction and recognition. In addition, the ancient Arabic documents contain annotations in the margins, often composed of lines obliquely oriented. The detection of these lines is important as the rest and is a major challenge for the indexing of these documents. Thus, the segmentation described in this thesis involves the extraction of multi-oriented lines. For this problem, the bibliography has only rudimentary techniques based essentially on the projection of the document image along one direction, which be failed in the case of multi-oriented documents. Given this lack, we have proposed an adaptive approach that first locates the different orientation zones, then based on each local orientation to extract the lines. During my thesis, i particularly invested on the following points : - Applying an automatic paving using the active contour model (snake). - Preparation the signal of the projection profile by removing all pixels that are not needed in the orientation estimation. Then, implementation of all energy distributions of Cohen's class on the projection profile to find the best distribution that gives the orientation. - Applying some extension rules to find the oriented zones. - Extraction of lines by using an connected components follow-up algorithm. - Separation of overlapped and touched lines using the morphology of Arabic terminal letters

Full textArab and Islamic bindings offer a very large variety of patterns throughout the Middle Ages. The period from 13th to the 15th century is undoubtedly a golden age regarding the beauty of their ornement and decoration.If during a long time circular and geometric profiles dominated the bindings decoration, the Mongol conquests from the 13th century have contributed to the diffusion of almoond profile from Persia to the Mamluk and Ottoman's bindings. It was widely used by Persian bookbinders whose art has certainly experienced an artistic influence from China. Persian artists have worn the almond shape at its highest degree of aesthetic refinement. The almond profile only appeared into the Mamluk binder's repertoire until the end of the 15th century and commonly used from the second half of 15th century. It is also from this period that it appears on the Ottoman bindings with lobed profiles usually filled with beautiful arabesques and floral ornamentoften on gilded background. In the late 15th century appears the technique of pressure moulding, that involved the pressing of the leather with large stamps. This technique quickly spread and replace almond shape using small stamps. The aesthetic influence of the almond profile was such that it were introduced into the Italian bookbinder's repertoire by the middle of the 15th century. This study presents the developments and dissemination of the almond profile made with small stamps from the 13th to the 15th century on the basis of a sample of ninety two bindings

Full textThe present dissertation deals with the episode of the two fake translation of arabic manuscripts published in palermo, sicily, at the end of the wviiith century: the codice diplomatico di sicilia (1789-1792) and the libro del consiglio d'egitto (179). They were presented as faithful and literal translation of some unique documents for the reconstruction of the origins of the sicilian nation during the arabic and normand dominations. In reality, they were nothing but the literary invention of the maltese chapelain giuseppe vella. From this specific episode a reflexion upon several questions opens up: the presence of other cultures and languages, as well as the relation between linguistic and political strategies within sicilian society at the end of the century; the role of tanslation seen from an historical as well as theoretical perspective; the european debate on the authenticity of the two fake translations; their political implications; the fictionalisation fo the forgery, its metamorphosis into parody; the relation between history, literature and imposture analysed through sciascia's historical novel ii consiglio d'egitto (1963); the notion itself of imposture is put into question altogether with the opposition between truth and falsehood usually employed in order to explain this phenomenon

Full textAl-Asbāb wa-l-ʿalāmāt "The causes and symptoms" by Nağīb al-Dīn al-Samarqandī (d.619 / 1222), is a medical treatise which made its author famous. However despite the fact that in 1935 it was acclaimed by science historian Max Meyerhof as a book that "should be published", it never made it to print. This work, the object of this thesis, is a critical edition of a complete version of the treatise.The redaction of this vade mecum was based by the author on three sources, particularly the "Canon" of Avicenna. He therefore respected the medical tradition of the time, which classified diseases on the one hand by pathologies specific to each organ of the body, and on the other hand by non-specific conditions (which we could qualify as general) affecting the entire body such as fevers. He also examined cosmetology and poisons, skin diseases, wounds, fractures and dislocations in a spirit of completeness. For every disease described, the author included its associated symptoms, advocatingtreatments based on simple or compound remedies.We edited the Arabic text while strictly observing the spelling and grammar of the original manuscript.This book, rich in technical terms specific to the field of anatomy and pathology, has allowed us to establish several glossaries that represent the first detailed classification of medieval Arabic medical vocabulary in French.Our aim, in this text edition, is to contribute to enrich the corpus of medical texts and in particular that of the thirteenth century and to counter the accepted ideas claiming that this era was a historical period of decline, if not the beginning of a cultural and scientific sclerosis in the Arab world

Full textThe production of belletristic copies encountered an important development in the city of Shiraz in Iran between 1467 and 1503. Is it possible to determine characteristics of this production? Are differences visible with manuscripts made in other centres, such as Tabriz and Herat? By examining a corpus of sixty dated manuscripts, this study aims to analyse the physical components of the Shiraz codex (paper, layout and ruling, binding…) as well as decorations (illuminations and illustrations) in order to identify specificities.The book craftsmen inherited their skills and the styles they use from the former Timurid period. They specialized in a mass production of neatly copied items, always adorned with illuminations, and often illustrated. The present research underlines the interactions between this manuscript production and the historical events in Shiraz, in a time when the governorate of Turkmen generals replaced the rule of the prince. The transfer of production from the court atelier to private workshops echoes this change of power. At the same time profound visual changes distinguish the book production, notably a peculiar writing style of nasta‘lîq, only used by Shiraz copyists, as well as stereotyped forms of illuminations and various “commercial” styles of paintings.As a result, a strong visual identity characterises the Chiraz manuscripts. As they were exported to various parts of the Persianate sphere, they had a strong impact on local productions, notably in the Ottoman realm. Furthermore, the same artisans families in Shiraz ensured the permanency of Aq Qoyyunlu models in the first third of the 16th century under the Safavid dynasty

Full textThis dissertation is a translation and a historical study of the fath ash-shakur fi ma'rifat a'yan 'ulama' at-takrur ("the key given by god for making known the noteworthy scholars of takrur"), a biographical anthology of the leading muslim scholars of the west african region of takrur (current-day mauritania and mali). Written by muhammad b. Abu bakr as-siddiq al-burtuli al-walati (1727 or 1728-1805), the fath contains 209 biographies of leading intellectuals of takrur, who lived between the 16th and the beginning of the 19th century. In my analysis of the fath, i have presented the author, the manuscripts used, the geographical scope, and the historical context. I have extracted important themes relating to: social life, different roles of scholars in the takruri society, islamic teaching, takruri teachers, fundamental books for islamic teaching, and relationship teacher-disciple. In sum, this study shows how this region was important for its cultural weight and its role which which rested in the fact that it constituted a human and cultural link between the maghrib and subsaharan west africa

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to bring to light the unknown figure of Ahmad al-Rabbât al-Halabî, a Syrian bookseller, who lived between the second half of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, to catalog and present his manuscripts and to investigate the users « readers » of this cultural archive: it can provide concrete answers to questions raised in the Arabic literature, the creation and circulation of texts. The research led to identify about 240 volumes, scattered around the world, from the initial library of al-Rabbât. The margins of these manuscripts contain a large number of reading certificates written by many generations of readers.The work on the manuscript sources also presented an opportunity to create a database of the copyists, the owners and the readers of manuscripts, and to determine the role played by Western travelers and consular agents in the production and the history of the manuscripts

Full textUntil recently the Sub-Saharan manuscripts have been inaccessible and thus include many major works in numerous fields. This thesis deals with two such works in the qreq of lexicography and grammar, namly: Iḍā’at al-Uḍmūs wa Riyāḍat al-Nufūs min Isṭilāḥ Ṣāḥib al-Qāmūs d’Aḥmed b. ‘Abd al-‘Azīz b. al-Rashīd al-Sijlmāsi, al-Mālikī (1761), which is also a commentary on the methodology of the book al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ; and al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ ; et de : Shifā’ al-Ṣudūr fī Ḥalli alfāẓ al-Shudhūr de Muḥammad b. ‘Abd al-Mun‘im Schams al-Din al-Jawjarī al-Shāfi’ al-Miṣrī (1484) which is also a commentary, dealing with the famous book of grammar by Ibn Hishām: Shudhūr al-Dhahab.This treatment of these manuscripts involved the making a scientific edition to provide a ready to read text, with the provion of vocalization, punctuation, critical apparatus and typography with the purpose not giving an image of these manuscripts, but to transforming them into a book.This thesis has scrutinized the variations between three copies of the book: Iḍā'at al-Uḍmūs and two copies of the book Shifā’ al-Ṣudūr in order to restore the texts; it has mentioned the errors encounred, traced the sources and made comments to clarify some passages by referring to a varied and plentiful bibliography

Full textThis work is a critical edition and a French translation of a part extracted from the Mir’at al-zamân fi tawârikh al-a‘yan (Mirror of the time in the histories of notabilities) of Sibt Ibn al-Gawzi (d. 654/1257). The author was a famous preacher of Iraqi origin and lived the major part of his life in Syria during the Crusades' times. His work is a universal history going back to the Creation down to the author’s death. The edited part deals with the years 412 to 434 / 1021-1043, corresponding in the history of Iraq to the reigns of Musharrif al-Dawla and Galal al-Dawla, two emirs of the Buyid dynasty who rule the country between 945 and 1055. It also contains information about other parts of the Arabic and Islamic world of that time: Ghazna, Egypt, Syria, Iran, and Upper-Mesopotamia. The edition and the French translation are preceded by an up to date biography of the author and a wide study about the Mir’at al-zamân’s manuscripts. The original version of Sibt Ibn al-Gawzi’s work indeed didn’t come down to us and the manuscripts only usually reproduce different abridged versions whose authors are still mostly unknown to us. Our edition provides for this part of the work the two extent abridged versions, one short which has already been edited but in an incomplete way and had to be revised, and one long which is here edited for the first time

Full textThis dissertation examines the paintings of one of the most important manuscripts of the Persianate book tradition: a copy of the Bustân of Sa‘di, executed in the Timurid court of Herât, ca. 894 H./1488. It argues that these paintings embody a shift in the understanding of painting from a device of representation to an object of performance. In the three chapters of the dissertation, I analyze several new characteristics that appear in the paintings of the Bustân. First, the painting becomes filled with elements that are not related to the text copied in the book (chapter I). Second, the monuments depicted are inscribed with poetic verses emphasizing the admiration of the viewer towards the paintings (chapter II). Lastly, the visual information becomes extremely miniaturized. The most meticulous details appear to be minute linear motifs. This emphasis on the line accords with the presence of the signature of the painter Behzâd, embedded in each composition (chapter III).All of these elements shift the attention of the viewer from the content represented in the paintings to the artistic process that led to their creation. By contrasting the paintings with the historical scenarios of their reception, this dissertation sheds light on a hitherto unnoticed aspect of late 9th/15th century Persian painting, one which foreshadows the development of art historiographical writings: the paintings signed “Behzâd” are conceived not only as representational devices, but also as objects of performance, that the painter uses to inscribe his gesture, and whose contemplation causes the viewer to elaborate discourses and fictions on the artist
