In December 1499 the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili appeared in Venice under the imprint of Aldus Manutius, in an edition whose woodcuts and typography make it one of the masterpieces of Italian printing. The enigmatic dream recounted in the book describes Poliphilo's struggle to win his love and his final happy union with his beloved Polia. The study focuses on the group of architectural representations in the book. Free from a slavish attempt to illustrate, they follow the course of the love story within the framework of an inner visual logic. A second part analyzes the section of the Temple of V

Numerous links exist between manuscripts that belonged to the Paduan philosopher Nicola Leonico Tomeo and the editions published by Aldus Manutius and his heirs. This article investigates the case of MS Paris, BNF, Greek 2764. As is demonstrated by discreet markings made with dry point, MS 2764 provided the copy-text for the edition of the Orphic Lithica published by Gian Francesco d’Asola in 1517. It was also used for the first edition of Colluthus, prepared by Aldus Manutius in 1504. Contrary to what might be thought on the basis of both marginal branches and a dedication to a woman named Fo

AbstractEven though the first press in Paris was set up in 1469, in rooms owned by the Collège de la Sorbonne, it took some time before the University's cursus ordinarius was regularly set in print. One of the first concerted efforts to reconfigure textbooks using print was carried out by Wolfgang Hopyland Johann Higman, beginning in the late 1480s. Their press—and their collaboration with the circle of Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples—was taken up by the elder Henri Estienne and then Simon de Colines, who transformed the press into one of the most illustrious cases of the printing art in Europe, alo

The present paper examines the history, circulation and use of the earliest Greek books ever printed (1471-1488). In particular, it focuses on the publishing enterprises of Bonus Accursius in Milan, who issued the first complete set of books to learn Greek, and of Laonicus & Alexander, the first Greeks to actively engage with the art of printing, who operated out of Venice but clearly had a double readership in mind: Westerners and, for the first time, the Greek communities of Venice and elsewhere.

Abstract Aldus Manutius (c. 1450–1515), arguably the best-known Renaissance printer, was eager to offer the highest editorial and typographical standards in his editions. Not even Aldus, however, was immune to typographical errors and occasional disasters. This chapter provides a checklist of all known in-house corrections found in the first five years of his printed production (1495–1500), examining various approaches to deal with errors, and addressing the question of how typographical flaws help us understand early printing practices.
