Abstract:
The article focuses on Mate Zorić’s scientific production dedicated to Manzoni and to the reception of The Betrothed among Croatian writers and readership. His critical interest is due to Manzoni’s close ties to Marko Kažotić and Niccolò Tommaseo, writers amply studied by Zorić since the 1950s. A third reason of his critical interest, discussed in this article, is Manzoni’s popularity among the Croatian readership through the translations of his works. The merit of Zorić is not only that of having identified the first attempt at translating Manzoni’s masterpiece in the archives of the National and University Library in Zagreb, but also of having applied the results of the studies of Croatian and Comparative Literature to the studied material. Attributing (along with the literary critic Emil Štampar) the translation published in 1875-1876 to the Croatian writer and translator Josip Eugen Tomić, Zorić also illustrates “the echoes of Manzoni” in the formation and flourishing of the Croatian historical novel. Mate Zorić’s work continues to stimulate further research on the subject from the perspectives of Comparative Literature and Translation Studies.

Abstract:
The article contributes to the rediscovery of the depth and complexity of Manzoni's thought, which too often has been reduced to an uncritical expression of Catholicism. Narrating the plague that struck Milan in 1630 in The Betrothed and the History of the Column of Infamy Manzoni reveals political, social, and cultural mechanisms remarkably similar to ours while struggling with the Coronavirus pandemic. The essay analyzes the apparatuses of contagion, the crucial importance of language, the devices of alienation favoring the loss of the sense of objectivity during the 1628 plague, and the pandemic of our time. For Manzoni, the recovery of reality in its bare complexity is possible, to a certain extent, by referring to the two fundamental lines of his thought. On the one hand, the philosophical irony with deep roots in Friedrich Schlegel, European Romanticism, and the reaction to Kantian philosophy. Romantic irony triggers the ethics of writing that runs through Manzoni's novel. On the other hand is the religious direction that Manzoni finds expressed in the Gospels, human conscience, and the idea of “eternal justice”. It emerges in crucial moments of the novel and its appendix, in what Emmanuel Levinas called the “epiphany of the face” which is considered in intersection with Paul Ricoeur's idea of “oneself as another”. Manzoni sees all the problems inherent in both reason and religion. In trying to keep them united, he participates in the most advanced Romantic view of religion and politics, what Frederick Beiser has defined as “one of the most creative and interesting attempts in the history of philosophy to surmount the classical dilemma between humanism and religion.”

La presente tesi di dottorato è il primo studio complessivo sui rapporti di Alessandro Manzoni con la cultura anglosassone, considerati nelle due direzioni: da una parte, le possibili influenze della letteratura inglese sulle sue opere, dall’altra la fortuna dell’autore in Gran Bretagna e negli Stati Uniti nell’Ottocento. Manzoni, infatti, non fu complessivamente incompreso o ignorato nei paesi anglosassoni, come ritenevano alcuni studiosi. Al contrario: personaggi importanti del mondo letterario e culturale apprezzavano e citavano le sue opere, e le numerose traduzioni, recensioni, antologie e libri sull’Italia testimoniano che questo autore era noto tra il pubblico colto. Tra gli episodi più importanti della fortuna di Manzoni nell’Inghilterra vittoriana si possono ricordare: due recensioni di Mary Shelley, influenzata dalla prospettiva risorgimentale (che era in realtà ambivalente verso Manzoni); e un romanzo della scrittrice Charlotte Yonge, legata al movimento di Oxford, che apprezzava particolarmente "I promessi sposi" per i valori cristiani. Negli Stati Uniti, i pregi del romanzo erano riconosciuti da intellettuali attenti alla cultura italiana contemporanea, come Emerson e Margaret Fuller.
This dissertation is the first overall study on Alessandro Manzoni’s relationship with the English-speaking world, considered along both lines: possible influences from English literature on Manzoni’s works, and Manzoni’s reception in Great Britain and the United States in the XIXth century. Manzoni was not ignored or misunderstood in those countries, as some critics believed. On the contrary, distinguished men and women from the literary and cultural world read, liked and quoted his works. Indeed, the great number of translations, reviews, anthologies and books on Italy dealing with Manzoni testifies that the Italian author was well-known among the educated reading public. Two important episodes of Manzoni’s reception in Victorian England can be mentioned: two reviews by Mary Shelley, who was influenced by the issues of the Italian Risorgimento (not totally sympathetic with Manzoni); a novel by Charlotte Yonge, the novelist of the Oxford movement, who admired Manzoni’s "Promessi sposi" for its Christian values. In the United States, the merits of Manzoni’s work were acknowledged by Emerson and Margaret Fuller, who showed interest and consideration for the contemporary Italian culture.

La première partie aborde huit dimensions de l’œuvre du compositeur dans une perspective analytique (matériau, temps, dynamique, timbre, forme, figures sonores, espace et texte). Dans la deuxième partie, où figure une étude de Per Massimiliano Robespierre (1974) et de Doktor Faustus (1988), sont présentés les principaux axes de sa poétique : l’engagement et l’innovation. La dernière partie conceptualise la notion de matiérisme en tant que fondement de sa praxis compositionnelle. À ce propos, Atomtod (1964), sa troisième œuvre pour le théâtre musical, a été analysée. Des documents inédits, dont des esquisses de ses œuvres et une correspondance avec Luigi Nono, ont été commentés tout au long de la thèse. Les annexes incluent un catalogue chronologique et thématique des œuvres du compositeur, une édition critique bilingue des textes mis en musique, la traduction de son dernier livre (Parole per musica) et une discographie
This thesis, which consists of three parts, represents an introduction to Giacomo Manzoni’s (Milan, 1932) musical ideas. First part deals with eight dimensions of his work from an analytical point of view (material, time, dynamics, timbre, form, sound shapes, space and text). In the second part, which contains an analysis of Per Massimiliano Robespierre (1974) and Doktor Faustus (1988), two main axes of his poetics were examined: commitment and innovation. Last part conceptualizes the notion of materialism in his poetics, as it constitutes the basis of his musical praxis. To this end, Atomtod (1964), his third work for the stage, was analysed. Unpublished documents, like sketches of his works and a correspondence with Luigi Nono, were commented throughout the thesis. Appendices include a chronological and thematic catalogue of his works, a bilingual critical edition of the texts which he set to music, a French translation of his last book (Parole per musica) and a discography

Si indaga in questo lavoro il rapporto dello scrittore siciliano con tre autori ottocenteschi: Manzoni, Belli e Verga. Sono tre autori diversi tra loro e con i quali il racalmutese instaura rapporti differenti per natura, forme, temi e conseguenti presenze nelle sue opere. Per questo, le vie percorse attraverso i testi dello scrittore novecentesco in cerca dei tre maestri sono state diverse. La ricerca svolta presenta una sua coerente unitarietà di impostazione dovuta al prevalere dell'interesse di Sciascia per il dato morale nel fare letteratura. Se infatti il problema centrale della giustizia e di una vita umana e civile è sicuramente dei primi due autori, rappresenta anche il punto di vista imprescindibile dal quale lo scrittore novecentesco guarda a Verga.

Abstract:
Piero Manzoni (1933-1963) is one of the best-known and under-theorized artists in all of postwar Europe. His body of work includes a range of practices from monochrome painting to readymade objects, from participatory sculpture to designs for architecture. More than simply innovative in its form and media, however, Manzoni's practice articulates a politics of the body and of the self that departs radically from the belief systems at stake in the work of his contemporaries in both Europe and America. If other postwar artists still claimed access to transcendence, to nature, or to autonomous subjectivity, Manzoni responds with works that reveal the body and the self as material and discursive effects of power relations.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to unfold the concept of the ‘degree zero art’ as an artistic and cultural project as manifested in the practices of two very different artists, Milan-based Piero Manzoni (Soncino 1933- Milan 1963) and Rio-born Hélio Oiticica (Rio de Janeiro 1937-1980), during the second half of the twentieth century. Despite the clear contrasts between their works and their very different cultural formations, the thesis focuses on these artists in order to show how their practices align around the challenge to aesthetic categories, stylistic labels and political frameworks employed by much recent critical literature. In order to discuss intellectual and critical structures developed to narrate varieties of North American conceptual practices, this thesis proposes a new interpretative frame: a ‘degree zero aesthetics’, creating a transnational dialogue between the work of Manzoni and Oiticica. Borrowing from the understanding of zero proposed by the German Zero group at the beginning of the sixties, I argue that the idea of zero denotes a fresh start and constructive will; it therefore explains the process of erasing and rebuilding from scratch that has characterised the post-war generation. Alongside the process of construing an aesthetic around the notion of ‘zero’, this thesis aims to deconstruct popular sites of discourse around the tropes of ‘participation’ and ‘politics’, critically readdressing the historiography surrounding these themes. Lastly, this project attempts to discuss the literature on both artists, who have become paradigmatic of certain key movements and moments in Latin American and European art respectively, and in recent elaborations of global art histories.

Lo studio dimostra come l’influenza di Antonio Rosmini abbia portato Alessandro Manzoni ad una profonda conoscenza della metafisica dell’800. A partire dal Carteggio fra i due studiosi, si evince che il senso profondo del “fare filosofia” è di tipo ermeneutico. Nella prima parte, si tratteggia l’intenso rapporto di amicizia che li accompagna per tutta la loro vita, fino alla composizione da parte di Alessandro Manzoni del Dialogo dell’invenzione, nel quale si nota la profonda devozione filosofica al Roveretano, maestro spirituale di Manzoni. Nella seconda parte, l’attenzione si concentra sulla Teosofia, e particolarmente nel IV libro, nel quale Rosmini sviscera la nozione di idea, tema anche del Dialogo. La parte terza si occupa invece dei sistemi fallaci, che hanno ecceduto o sottovalutato la questione metafisica, per passare poi nella quarta ed ultima parte alla considerazione dell’utilità e della giustizia, temi importantissimi per entrambi i grandi letterati.

Il lavoro nasce come prosecuzione del saggio del Professor Langella "Manzoni poeta teologo". Consta di tre parti: una iniziale rassegna critica fa quasi da pretesto per trovare assetto e convergenza metodologica. Il secondo capitolo ripercorre due grandi questioni biografiche manzoniane (conversione e giansenismo). Il terzo capitolo, eminentemente stilistico, contiene anche una riflessione sul valore della similitudine in Manzoni. Schedate in appendice tutte le similitudini del "Fermo e Lucia" e dei "Promessi Sposi".
Dr. Raffaella’s Battaglini’s work was born as an ideal completion of Professor Langella's essay "Manzoni poeta teologo". The present essay is evidently threefold: the critical review at the beginning functions almost as a way - we might even say a pretext – to find the right methodological approach for the entire work. The biographical overview is focused on the knots of Manzoni’s conversion on one hand, and of his Jansenism on the other. A sort of status quaestionis of Manzoni’s Jansenism is presented in the Second Chapter. The final stylistic analysis – which was initially supposed to appear at the beginning of the essay – has undoubtedly great qualities and reveals Dr. Raffaella Battaglini’s talent. The monographic study of the simile summarizes and revives many of the remarks (Trompeo, Petrocchi, Cerisola, Raimondi can be quoted among others) that the critical corpus about Manzoni has often pointed out but not always fully developped. The approach to the text is easy without being ingenuous, the remarks are always thoughtful, the prose is fluent and lively. The final appendix about simile, patiently composed, happily fulfills a literary whole contemplari et aliis contemplata tradere.

Abstract:
Manzai is a type of traditional stand-up comedy in Japan. In most cases of manzai acts, two performers, a fool (Boke) and a straight man (Tsukkomi), trade jokes at a high speed. Most of the jokes revolve around mutual misunderstandings, double-talk, puns and other gags. In the last two decades, manzai has become very popular thanks to two contests, M-1 Grand Prix and THE MANZAI. Both contests reward the best manzai duo for that year. M-1 Grand Prix was held between from 2001 to 2010 and from 2015 to the present, whereas THE MANZAI was from 2011 to 2014. In the final stage of the contests, several manzai duos, who won the proceeding phases of preliminary rounds, perform manzai on stage, and a panel of judges rates their manzai acts, then the best manzai duo is decided. In 2021, the number of the contestants increased to over 6,000 duos, and now, an iconic comedian and active manzai performers are criticizing the styles and techniques in recent manzai acts. In the present study, 249 manzai acts performed by the finalists on the stage of the M-1 Grand Prix and THE MANZAI were investigated to clarify how manzai styles have changed in the last two decades. Numbers in the factors of styles and types of Tsukkomi, styles and types of Boke, and structure of manzai were counted for each year, and a 19 x 174 cross-tabulation table was constructed. Then, this table was analyzed using correspondence analysis and cluster analysis. The results of the correspondence analysis showed a two-dimensional solution with the cumulative contribution ration of 36 %. The results of the cluster analysis on this two-dimensional plane showed that the manzai acts were divided into three periods, the early period of M-1 Grand Prix, the period of THE MANZAI and the late period of M-1 Grand Prix. The results also showed that the manzai acts tended to use skits and Tsukkomi developed the plots, in the early period of M-1 Grand Prix. Then, both Tsukkomi and Boke gradually came to use various skillful techniques, and the number of manzai acts increased where the Boke develops the plot. In this way, it was clarified how the styles of manzai changed and the variation of the style and types increased in the last two decades.

Originally, City is an enormous and intricate system. However, Cerdá simplified the complicated system into a basic unit, the Manzana, which is the unique code belonging to Barcelona found by Cerdá and based on his analysis to the history of the city, life of its citizens, and some other cases. Being at the core of Barcelona Eixample plan, it gradually formulates the enormous city system of Barcelona and thus paves the way for its future development. Starting with the rules of Invariability, Simplicity and Changeability, the three principles in Yi, this thesis regards the Manzana as a Yin-Yang body, with Yin and Yang power complementing and coexisting with each other. By restoring the codes hidden behind the 550 Manzanas in Barcelona, the thesis tries to explore the common ground between the physical space of the city and the binary life of the people living in it.

La actividad de producción y exportación de fruta de pepita (manzana y pera) ha sido históricamente una actividad de relevancia entre las economías regionales de la Argentina. Sin embargo, en el último tiempo este sector ha enfrentado diversos desafíos que han afectado su competitividad. En este artículo documentamos y analizamos, sin embargo, casos de empresas que, en distintas etapas de la cadena de valor, en productos frescos e industrializados, han desarrollado estrategias de diferenciación, innovación y customización a las demandas del mercado externo lo que les ha permitido competir exitosamente en el mercado externo. Los casos analizados son tres empresas en diferentes segmentos de la cadena de valor las cuales están vinculadas entre ellas a través de la cadena de suministros. La firma Patagonian Fruits Trade es una firma exportadora de gran porte líder en el mercado de fruta fresca (manzana, pera y kiwi), Fénix es una empresa mediana líder mundial en la exportación de puré de fruta y la empresa Pura Frutta es una empresa start-up joven en el mercado de jugos que está creciendo en un mercado de nicho en expansión. Los diferentes segmentos de la cadena fueron analizados de manera articulada y con una visión de conjunto entendiendo que es clave conocer las retroalimentaciones que existen a lo largo de la actividad para agregar valor y ganar en competitividad exportadora. Asimismo, la selección de un conjunto heterogéneo de casos de estudio en términos de tamaño, capacidades e historia es de gran utilidad para conocer posibles trayectorias de internacionalización accesibles para firmas diversas.

This paper analyzes the causes, effects and policy alternatives associated with the recent international food price crisis in the Andean region. Additionally, the document makes a first approach to the policy options utilized to confront the crisis, discussing the mix of policies and their potential effectiveness, using a qualitative methodology based in part on schemes proposed in Manzano and Stein (2008), and Malarín (2008). A final section underscores various messages common to the countries of the region. Specifically, the report concludes that this crisis offers a great opportunity for transforming its uncertainties and costs into a stimulus for maturing an infrastructure of prevention and reduction of vulnerabilities in the Andean economies.
