Abstract:
In the context of custom map design, handling more artistic and expressive tools has been identified as a carto-graphic need, in order to design stylized and expressive maps. Based on previous works on style formalization, an approach for specifying the map style has been proposed and experimented for particular use cases. A first step deals with the analysis of inspiration sources, in order to extract ‘what does make the style of the source’, i.e. the salient visual characteristics to be automatically reproduced (textures, spatial arrangements, linear stylization, etc.). In a second step, in order to mimic and generate those visual characteristics, existing and innovative rendering techniques have been implemented in our GIS engine, thus extending the capabilities to generate expressive renderings. Therefore, an extension of the existing cartographic pipeline has been proposed based on the following aspects: 1- extension of the symbolization specifications OGC SLD/SE in order to provide a formalism to specify and reference expressive rendering methods; 2- separate the specification of each rendering method and its parameterization, as metadata. The main contribution has been described in (Christophe et al. 2016). In this paper, we focus firstly on the extension of the cartographic pipeline (SLD++ and metadata) and secondly on map design capabilities which have been experimented on various topographic styles: old cartographic styles (Cassini), artistic styles (watercolor, impressionism, Japanese print), hybrid topographic styles (ortho-imagery & vector data) and finally abstract and photo-realist styles for the geovisualization of costal area. The genericity and interoperability of our approach are promising and have already been tested for 3D visualization.

Abstract:
This study focused on the relationships between knowledge mapping construction methods and learning performance. The different knowledge mapping methods (by experts vs. by self-learners) were assumed to achieve different learning performance levels. The results of this study show that neither different knowledge map construction methods nor learning styles significantly influenced individual learning performance. Either of the knowledge map construction methods applied to the programming language learning and the learning scores are significantly higher than average. Learning style does not moderate knowledge map construction methods on learning scores. However, learning style is a significant moderator of knowledge map construction methods on learning satisfaction. Different knowledge map construction methods should be considered with different learning styles to significantly increase learning satisfaction. The results could be used to design effective programming language learning materials.

Abstract:
<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Recent advances in deep learning have facilitated the exchange of styles and textures between input images to create unique synthesised outputs. This paper assesses the applicability of neural style transfer to cartography and evaluates to what degree emotions attached to input images can be preserved in maps co-created by human and algorithm. As a source of emotions we utilized personal paintings created during a workshop with international artists at the School of Machines, Making & Make-Believe in August 2018. The neural style transfer was used as a tool to transfer the characteristics of the artworks onto the map. Differences in emotion perception between human-made textures and generated maps were assessed with an online survey completed by 1187 users. The results confirmed that emotional descriptions remain the same before and after the procedure of neural style transfer. The users perceived artificially generated maps as interesting and visually pleasing artefacts. Artworks with variety of line, point and surface depictions were the most suitable algorithm inputs and achieved better visual results in representing the map content. After analysing the neural style transfer technique and identifying its limitations for cartographic style and map content, we conclude with plausible directions for future research.</p>

Abstract:
This paper presents a model for automatically generating 3D cartoon ocean water animations in real-time. The dynamic ocean water surface model is modeled by a spectral method. The cartoon rendering process is implemented by multipass on GPU: First, we code normal of ocean model and generate normal map. Next, we extract discontinuities from normal map and smooth it into edge map. Finally we combine the edge map with cartoon shading based on a projective texture mapping. Some experimental results demonstrate the prettiness and efficiency of the presented model.

Abstract:
Background: Military pilots show advanced visuospatial skills. Previous studies demonstrate that they are better at mentally rotating a target, taking different perspectives, estimating distances and planning travel and have a topographic memory. Here, we compared navigational cognitive styles between military pilots and people without flight experience. Pilots were expected to be more survey-style users than nonpilots, showing more advanced navigational strategies. Method: A total of 106 military jet pilots from the Italian Air Force and 92 nonpilots from the general population matched for education with the pilots were enrolled to investigate group differences in navigational styles. The participants were asked to perform a reduced version of the Spatial Cognitive Style Test (SCST), consisting of six tasks that allow us to distinguish individuals in terms of landmark (people orient themselves by using a figurative memory for environmental objects), route (people use an egocentric representation of the space) and survey (people have a map-like representation of the space) user styles. Results: In line with our hypothesis, military pilots mainly adopt the survey style, whereas nonpilots mainly adopt the route style. In addition, pilots outperformed nonpilots in both the 3D Rotation Task and Map Description Task. Conclusions: Military flight expertise influences some aspects of spatial ability, leading to enhanced human navigation. However, it must be considered that they are a population whose navigational skills were already high at the time of selection at the academy before formal training began.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I discusses my recent research on the potential relationship between cognitive style and navigational map reading ability. Behavioral geography researchers investigate navigation and a person's knowledge of their environment. These activities have led to and continue to lead to theories about the underlying cognitive processes associated with map use and navigation. Previous research has shown a positive relationship between geographic education and a person's ability to understand the environment around them. Navigation, cognitive maps, mental rotation, map-based knowledge vs. route-based knowledge, and way-finding have all been identified as potential processes that people employ to travel around their environment. By understanding how people behave, process information, solve problems, and make decisions this research hopes to bring to light traits that may be useful in furthering geographic education and, as a result, environmental understanding.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a biologically inspired model of learning and development. This model decomposes the lifetime of a single learning system into a number of stages, analogous to the infant, juvenile, adolescent and adult stages of development in a biological system. This model is then applied to Kohonen's SOM algorithm. In order to better understand the operation of Kohonen's SOM algorithm, a theoretical analysis of self-organisation is performed. This analysis establishes the role played by lateral connections in organisation, and the significance of the Laplacian lateral connections common to many SOM architectures. This analysis of neighbourhood interactions is then used to develop three key variations on Kohonen's SOM algorithm. Firstly, a new scheme for parameter decay, known as Butterworth Step Decay, is presented. This decay scheme provides training times comparable to the best training times possible using traditional linear decay, but precludes the need for a priori knowledge of likely training times. In addition, this decay scheme allows Kohonen's SOM to learn in a continuous manner.Secondly, a method is presented for establishing core knowledge in the fundamental representation of a SOM. This technique is known as Syllabus Presentation. This technique involves using a selected training syllabus to reinforce knowledge known to be significant. A method for developing a training syllabus, known as Percept Masking, is also presented.Thirdly, a method is presented for preventing the loss of trained representations in a continuously learning SOM. This technique, known as Arbor Pruning, involves restricting the weight update process to prevent the loss of significant representations. This technique can be used if the data domain varies within a known set of dimensions. However, it cannot be used to control forgetfulness if dimensions are added to or removed from ++<br>the data domain.

Abstract:
Kartografijoje iki šiol nėra išnagrinėti elektroninių žemėlapių stilistiniai ypatumai. Jei nepaisoma stilingumo, gali sutrikti žemėlapio funkcijos: komunikacijos, informatyvumo, emocinio poveikio. Elektroninių žemėlapių stilius turi trūkumų. Šio darbo tikslas yra prisidėti gerinant estetinį elektroninių žemėlapių vaizdą. Darbo tikslui atskleisti išplėtota žemėlapio stiliaus samprata, adaptuoti kartografijoje žemėlapio stiliaus lygmenys, sudaryta elektroninių žemėlapių stilių klasifikacija, parengtos metodinės rekomendacijos žemėlapių stiliaus formavimui. Rekomenduojama žemėlapių stilių apibrėžti kaip žemėlapio meninės raiškos savitumą, pasireiškiantį tikslinga meninės raiškos priemonių atranka ir organizacija bei priklausantį nuo autoriaus asmeninių savybių, žemėlapio turinio, paskirties ir pobūdžio, naudotojo poreikių bei žemėlapio perdavimo priemonės. Bendrajam elektroninių žemėlapių stiliui būdingas „paslėptas“ informatyvumas ir tikslumas, t.y. informacijos pateikimas „už žemėlapio“, bendras gyvumo emocinis poveikis, ekrano apimtyje telpančios žemėlapių kompozicijos. Elektroninių žemėlapių stilius galima suklasifikuoti į: technologinį/deterministinį, dalykišką, lyrišką, žaismingą, ekstravagantišką. Dažniausios elektroninių žemėlapių stiliaus klaidos: skenuotų žemėlapių vaizdo defektai, stilistinio vientisumo, orientyrų, paaiškinamųjų užrašų nebuvimas žemėlapiuose, žemėlapio vaizdo apkrovimas kompiuteriniais efektais.<br>The problem in cartography is that the stylistic analize of electronic maps is not done until now. The map style playes an important role in the comunication, informativeness, aesthetics of the map. The stylistics of the digital maps has some disadventiges. The purpose of this work is the perfectation of the aesthetical view of the electronic maps. For this purpose the definition of the map style was developed, the complex structure of the map style was showed, the styles of electronic maps were classified and the methodical recommendations for the creation of style of electronic maps were created. It is recommended to define the concept of the style as it is a specific selection and combination of the means of the artistic expression, that depend on author‘s personal characteristics; the contents, purpose and character of the map itself; the map users’ demands; media. The general style of electronic maps distinguish themselves for „invisible” informative and precise expression (the information is laid „behind the map“ and is reached due to the interactive ability), vivacious emotion impact, screen fitting compositions. All the styles of electronic maps can be classified as follows: technological/deteminative, business-like, lyric, playful, extravagant. The image defects in scaned maps, the lack of unity of style, reference points and records in the map view, overdone computer effects - these are the most frequent mistakes, that are done in the stylistics of digital... Abstract:
This study investigated the use of varying formats for presenting complex visual information in the form of fictitious maps. There were three treatment formats, two which sequenced the map information by conceptual category (i.e., roads, geographic features, boundaries), and a third which used a normal intact map format. The two sequenced presentations differed in that the first was additive; that is, each visual in the sequence built upon the preceding one by adding a category of information until the complete map was displayed. The second simply displayed one conceptual category per visual. The cognitive style field dependence-independence was also examined as potentially related to map-learning ability based on the greater cognitive restructuring ability of the field independent orientation. lt was predicted that the achievement of field-dependent students would be higher with the sequenced map treatments, and the achievement of the field-independent students would be higher with the intact map treatment. The research questions were: 1. Does dividing map information into either an Additive sequence or a Part-by-Part sequence affect performance on a map-learning task? 2. Do students classified as held dependent, moderately field - independent, or held independent differ in their performance on a map-learning task? 3. Is there an interaction across visual design format with cognitive style? The sample for this study was composed of 92 four-year college students. Level of held dependence was measured by the GEFT. The analysis of the 3 X 3 research design was by a two-way analysis of variance with posttest scores (which measured immediate recall of map information) as the dependent variable. Map presentation format and cognitive style were independent variables. Results indicated there was no difference in achievement among the three map presentation formats, but that cognitive style was significantly related to posttest scores; that is, a higher level of held independence was associated with more effective map-learning performance.<br>Ed. Abstract:
The first one is an attempt to define and delimit the concept of structural marker as a tool of text analysis applied to poetic translation. After dealing with the specificity of the poetic text and re-examining the main theories about poetic translation, structural markers are identified with the stylistic features that mark the semantic frame of the text.<br/><br/>Afterwards, we apply the analysis based on the structural markers to 21 poems by Philip Larkin, put into groups by themes. The practical outcome of this analysis the translation to Spanish of this poems, accompanied with a map where the main structural features can be seen; and the theoretical outcome is a stylistic characterisation of Larkin's poetry, which we represent in a stylistic map.<br/><br/>We also find an outline of translation criticism based in this tool called structural marker.

Abstract:
The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between adult attachment style, humility, and relationship satisfaction in college student couples. Attachment style--given its significant role in predicting how individuals feel, think, and behave in relationships--was expected to be an important predictor of humility, although this possibility has rarely been studied empirically. The current study found that: (a) attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were significant, negative predictors of total humility, (b) attachment anxiety (but not attachment avoidance) was a significant, negative predictor of both intrapersonal and interpersonal humility, (c) a romantic partner's attachment avoidance (but not attachment anxiety) was a significant, negative predictor of a target person's relationship satisfaction, and (d) a romantic partner's perceived level of humility was a significant, positive predictor of a target person's relationship satisfaction.

Abstract:
Although proprietary and free web map applications have become an important part of daily life, individual map styling has been neglected for a fairly long time. With the latest possibilities of custom adjustment provided by many services and some interesting artistic experiments, this is about to change. In the context of artistic cartography and custom map styling, this work explores the possibilities of employing an automated process for the generation of WMTS compatible map tiles with an artistic styling. Web mapping standards and techniques of non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) are considered as well as traditional cartographic representations. Furthermore, existing vector- and raster-based processes are analyzed including an interactive workflow with the open-source image editing software GIMP, which is examined with respect to its drawing capabilities. Based on this, a concept for an automated rendering process is developed and influencing factors along with input parameters are discussed. An experimental automated processing is implemented using GIMP and its Python scripting interface to create single maps and seamless map tiles for the use in a WMTS application. Different drawing techniques of GIMP, such as brushes, dynamics and masks are applied during the rendering process. Geodata is taken from the freely available OpenStreetMap project and it is stored in a geodatabase. Furthermore, the GIS capabilities of the database are used to implement custom query procedures for the creation of seamless tiles, feature simplification and generalization that makes a preprocessing of the data unnecessary. Additionally randomization methods for the estrangement and abstraction of the SVG vector graphics geometry to emulate a hand-drawn appearance are created based on non-photorealistic rendering techniques. As a result, various rendering and abstraction processes are evaluated and discussed regarding their contribution to an artistic appearance. Map tiles are created using these stylings which are WMTS compatible and can be presented in a web mapping application.

Scotto, Lo Massese Dominique. "Classicisme et modernité du style et de la versification dans "Les fleurs du mal"." Aix-Marseille 1, 1991. http://www.theses.fr/1991AIX10018.

Full text
Abstract:
En fait, classicisme et modernite sont melanges avec art dans le style et la versification<br>That research on the classicism and the modernity of style and versification in les fleurs du mal intends to show how, making use of his classical inheritance, baudelaire knew how to give his poetry a modern turn which takes the realities of his time into account. Classicism appears in them orpho-syntax with verbal constructions and sentence patterns, and in the versification with the use of the sonnet, quatrains with alternate rhymes, alexandrines and octosyllabics, and binary rhythm. We find it again in the lexicon characterized by mythological and biblical references, the classical meaning of words, the use of latin and the propriety of terms, in the proceedings of style like the characterization and the figures of speech. The modernity, perceived in the morpho-syntax in which original graphs are added to the functions of indicative tenses and to the declarative statements, is obvious in the versification with the use of the odd metres, the combination of odd and even, triple rhythm, irregular divisions with stanza enjambments, and with the disposition of rhymes in sonnets. It impregnates the lexicon in which appear the poet's inspirers and contemporaries, technical neologisms, the realism or the exoticism of landscapes before shining in baudelaire's favourite figures of speech : oxymorons, metaphors, comparisons, images and symbols. Classicism and modernity are mixed up with art in style and versification

Abstract:
The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the impact of Internet relationships on regular ongoing relationships from the point of view of those engaged in such relationships. Two studies were conducted. A sample of 75 participants, including 22 females and 53 males who were married or living in defacto relationships and ranging in age from 18 to 75 years completed an anonymous online survey for Study One. Demographic characteristics, frequency and method of communication and relationship satisfaction were investigated. Questions were asked about Internet relationship formation. Respondents were asked to gauge levels of self-disclosure within their regular ongoing relationship and their online relationship. They were also asked about the proximity and physical attractiveness of their online partner. It was found that most respondents communicated daily, were more satisfied with their Internet partner than their regular ongoing partner, considered their Internet partner physically attractive and communicated in a highly intimate manner. The purpose of the second study was to investigate the similarities and differences between the personality characteristics and attachment styles of respondents. Participants in the second study were 133 respondents who were married or living in defacto relationships, including 47 females and 86 males ranging in age from 18 years to 66 years. Respondents completed an anonymous online survey, which included measures of personality (e.g. the International Personality Item Pool, Goldberg, 1999), the Relationship Satisfaction questionnaire (Hendrick, 1988), and the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998). Respondents were found to be somewhat more agreeable and conscientious, and less narcissistic than previous research had found to be the case for those individuals who engaged in face-to-face infidelity. The preoccupied attachment group was well represented, but was less differentiated from the other attachment groups than was the fearful group, who were mainly female. The personality profile and attachment style of respondents in Study Two was, therefore, found to be different in important ways from that which has been associated with face-to-face infidelity. Findings were discussed in terms of methodological implications, suggestions for future research and also implications for Counselling Psychologists.

Abstract:
We present a novel real-time, collaborative, and interactive AI painting system, Mappa Mundi, for artistic Mind Map creation. The system consists of a voice-based input interface, an automatic topic expansion module, and an image projection module. The key innovation is to inject Artificial Imagination into painting creation by considering lexical and phonological similarities of language, learning and inheriting artist’s original painting style, and applying the principles of Dadaism and impossibility of improvisation. Our system indicates that AI and artist can collaborate seamlessly to create imaginative artistic painting and Mappa Mundi has been applied in art exhibition in UCCA, Beijing.

Abstract:
Abstract Turbomachinery systems are often subject to variations in ambient conditions and applied loads in operation. Standard maps (perhaps the most common being pressure ratio verses mass flow for compressors) are usually presented in terms of fixed inflow conditions. To account for changes in performance due to varying inlet conditions, compressors maps are often presented in standardized form where the mass flow and rotational speeds are normalized as a function of the reference condition total pressure and temperature. These methods are very widely used, particularly in the turbo charger industry. With these normalized maps, the actual performance of a compressor in a given environment can be deduced simply and easily with very reasonable accuracy in most cases. The underlaying assumption of this conventional normalization process is that the fluid behaves as a perfect gas. While this is usually sufficient for air compressors, the method is not viable where the fluid properties are not near perfect gas conditions, which is certainly the case for supercritical applications. The highly variable fluid properties near the critical point, and the challenges they present in design, have been well documented in the literature. The two most critical properties to consider in the design process are the density and the speed of sound. The density determines the volumetric flow for a given mass flow and this in turn determines the incidence angle, a primary driver of performance. The speed of sound directly affects the range of the compressor via choking. Choking range can be further complicated by the fact that under certain conditions, the choked state can be reached at Mach numbers less than one. While rare, this situation can occur when the inflow conditions are found close to the liquid side of the saturation dome. To account for these effects, a new method is proposed to generate normalized maps of performance that can be used to determine actual performance of a wide range of inlet conditions for highly non-linear thermodynamic properties. Although not as simple as the conventional perfect gas method that can be applied in a “back-of-the-envelope” style, the new method can be applied very rapidly using a spreadsheet-based method directly calling high fidelity NIST thermodynamic models. The end result of this tool is that a compressor map that has been painstakingly generated with testing or CFD can be applied to any inlet condition and the range and performance predicted very rapidly with high accuracy.

Abstract:
Research on learning styles often focuses on the learning style of the student; however, the learning style of the educator may affect instructional choices and hinder learning. Few studies have addressed the lack of knowledge that exists in universities with respect to educators’ learning styles and a lesson framework (development, delivery, and debriefing). This sequential mixed methods study explored university educators’ conscious, reflective instructional choices as they related to learning styles application within a lesson. Two theoretical and one conceptual frameworks drew on Kolb’s experiential learning theory, Bloom’s, Reigeluth’s, and Gagné’s instructional design theories and models, and Fiddler’s and Marienau’s events model of learning from experience. Research questions addressed learning styles, usage patterns, instructional choices, and reflections of university educators within a lesson framework. An online inventory recorded 38 university educators’ instructional choices, learning styles, and learning styles patterns within the framework of a lesson. Interviews were conducted with 7 of the university educators to document their conscious reflections regarding their instructional choices. Results from the inventory identified that more than 56% of university educators applied the accommodation learning style during the stages of development and delivery of a lesson, and 34% applied the assimilation learning style during the debriefing stage, which were supported by detailed reflections about their instructional choices in relation to their learning styles. The knowledge acquired about learning styles applications during a lesson framework may benefit university educators’ teaching, which are foundational to affecting positive social change within academic and social communities.

Abstract:
The article contains a linguistic analysis of the book ‘The Drawn City’ by A. Ryzhkov; the book comprises reproductions of pictures and respective text in the context of a mental map of the city of Yekaterinburg. In approaching the mental map as spatial information in people’s minds, reflecting the image of the city, the goals of linguistic analysis are to show the vision of the metropolis and the linguistic ways of verbally expressing the thoughts and feelings of the landscape artist; to determine the value to society of the private perception of the city through artistic representation and textual expression. Stylistic analysis of the text reveals the dominant features regarding the lexical, morphological and syntactic levels, while the pragmatics of the text consider its social relevance. Peculiar traits of the author’s style of the artist and the writer, as perceived by readers, have been listed; important points of the mental map of the city have been defined accounting for the book’s content: architecture, dominant idea, eclectics. The perception of time in synchronicity and diachronicity in the narrative regarding Yekaterinburg is considered, the motif of transition from reality to imagery is shown. Examples are given of positive, negative and contradictory evaluations of architectural objects, verbally influencing readers through the creation of visual images. There are linguistic tricks listed which were used in the book by A. Ryzhkov uses language techniques that hold the attention of the recipient of the text: comparison, personification, the use of colloquial language, humour and wordplay, and dialogisation. Methods of the creation of an imagery-geographic map of urban space have been shown in the author’s iconic-symbolic form. A conclusion was made on the significance of the book of A. Ryzhkov having used a visual-verbal method for the creation of a sustainable and replicable image of the city in the human mind. The artist’s civic stance on city protection has been set forth.

In ASME 2019 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2019-97932.

Abstract:
Abstract Collaborative problem solving can be successful or counterproductive. The performance of collaborative teams depends not only on team members’ abilities, but also on their cognitive styles. Cognitive style measures differences in problem-solving behavior: how people generate solutions, manage structure, and interact. While teamwork and problem solving have been studied separately, their interactions are less understood. This paper introduces the KAI Agent-Based Organizational Optimization Model (KABOOM), the first model to simulate cognitive style in collaborative problem solving. KABOOM simulates the performance of teams of agents with heterogeneous cognitive styles on two contextualized design problems. Results demonstrate that, depending on the problem, certain cognitive styles may be more effective than others. Also, intentionally aligning agents’ cognitive styles with their roles can improve team performance. These experiments demonstrate that KABOOM is a useful tool for studying the effects of cognitive style on collaborative problem solving.
