Metcalfe, Benjamin. "The Influence of Cogntive Style on Navigational Map Reading." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12987.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I discusses my recent research on the potential relationship between cognitive style and navigational map reading ability. Behavioral geography researchers investigate navigation and a person's knowledge of their environment. These activities have led to and continue to lead to theories about the underlying cognitive processes associated with map use and navigation. Previous research has shown a positive relationship between geographic education and a person's ability to understand the environment around them. Navigation, cognitive maps, mental rotation, map-based knowledge vs. route-based knowledge, and way-finding have all been identified as potential processes that people employ to travel around their environment. By understanding how people behave, process information, solve problems, and make decisions this research hopes to bring to light traits that may be useful in furthering geographic education and, as a result, environmental understanding.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a biologically inspired model of learning and development. This model decomposes the lifetime of a single learning system into a number of stages, analogous to the infant, juvenile, adolescent and adult stages of development in a biological system. This model is then applied to Kohonen's SOM algorithm. In order to better understand the operation of Kohonen's SOM algorithm, a theoretical analysis of self-organisation is performed. This analysis establishes the role played by lateral connections in organisation, and the significance of the Laplacian lateral connections common to many SOM architectures. This analysis of neighbourhood interactions is then used to develop three key variations on Kohonen's SOM algorithm. Firstly, a new scheme for parameter decay, known as Butterworth Step Decay, is presented. This decay scheme provides training times comparable to the best training times possible using traditional linear decay, but precludes the need for a priori knowledge of likely training times. In addition, this decay scheme allows Kohonen's SOM to learn in a continuous manner.Secondly, a method is presented for establishing core knowledge in the fundamental representation of a SOM. This technique is known as Syllabus Presentation. This technique involves using a selected training syllabus to reinforce knowledge known to be significant. A method for developing a training syllabus, known as Percept Masking, is also presented.Thirdly, a method is presented for preventing the loss of trained representations in a continuously learning SOM. This technique, known as Arbor Pruning, involves restricting the weight update process to prevent the loss of significant representations. This technique can be used if the data domain varies within a known set of dimensions. However, it cannot be used to control forgetfulness if dimensions are added to or removed from ++
the data domain.

Abstract:
Kartografijoje iki šiol nėra išnagrinėti elektroninių žemėlapių stilistiniai ypatumai. Jei nepaisoma stilingumo, gali sutrikti žemėlapio funkcijos: komunikacijos, informatyvumo, emocinio poveikio. Elektroninių žemėlapių stilius turi trūkumų. Šio darbo tikslas yra prisidėti gerinant estetinį elektroninių žemėlapių vaizdą. Darbo tikslui atskleisti išplėtota žemėlapio stiliaus samprata, adaptuoti kartografijoje žemėlapio stiliaus lygmenys, sudaryta elektroninių žemėlapių stilių klasifikacija, parengtos metodinės rekomendacijos žemėlapių stiliaus formavimui. Rekomenduojama žemėlapių stilių apibrėžti kaip žemėlapio meninės raiškos savitumą, pasireiškiantį tikslinga meninės raiškos priemonių atranka ir organizacija bei priklausantį nuo autoriaus asmeninių savybių, žemėlapio turinio, paskirties ir pobūdžio, naudotojo poreikių bei žemėlapio perdavimo priemonės. Bendrajam elektroninių žemėlapių stiliui būdingas „paslėptas“ informatyvumas ir tikslumas, t.y. informacijos pateikimas „už žemėlapio“, bendras gyvumo emocinis poveikis, ekrano apimtyje telpančios žemėlapių kompozicijos. Elektroninių žemėlapių stilius galima suklasifikuoti į: technologinį/deterministinį, dalykišką, lyrišką, žaismingą, ekstravagantišką. Dažniausios elektroninių žemėlapių stiliaus klaidos: skenuotų žemėlapių vaizdo defektai, stilistinio vientisumo, orientyrų, paaiškinamųjų užrašų nebuvimas žemėlapiuose, žemėlapio vaizdo apkrovimas kompiuteriniais efektais.
The problem in cartography is that the stylistic analize of electronic maps is not done until now. The map style playes an important role in the comunication, informativeness, aesthetics of the map. The stylistics of the digital maps has some disadventiges. The purpose of this work is the perfectation of the aesthetical view of the electronic maps. For this purpose the definition of the map style was developed, the complex structure of the map style was showed, the styles of electronic maps were classified and the methodical recommendations for the creation of style of electronic maps were created. It is recommended to define the concept of the style as it is a specific selection and combination of the means of the artistic expression, that depend on author‘s personal characteristics; the contents, purpose and character of the map itself; the map users’ demands; media. The general style of electronic maps distinguish themselves for „invisible” informative and precise expression (the information is laid „behind the map“ and is reached due to the interactive ability), vivacious emotion impact, screen fitting compositions. All the styles of electronic maps can be classified as follows: technological/deteminative, business-like, lyric, playful, extravagant. The image defects in scaned maps, the lack of unity of style, reference points and records in the map view, overdone computer effects - these are the most frequent mistakes, that are done in the stylistics of digital... Abstract:
This study investigated the use of varying formats for presenting complex visual information in the form of fictitious maps. There were three treatment formats, two which sequenced the map information by conceptual category (i.e., roads, geographic features, boundaries), and a third which used a normal intact map format. The two sequenced presentations differed in that the first was additive; that is, each visual in the sequence built upon the preceding one by adding a category of information until the complete map was displayed. The second simply displayed one conceptual category per visual. The cognitive style field dependence-independence was also examined as potentially related to map-learning ability based on the greater cognitive restructuring ability of the field independent orientation. lt was predicted that the achievement of field-dependent students would be higher with the sequenced map treatments, and the achievement of the field-independent students would be higher with the intact map treatment. The research questions were: 1. Does dividing map information into either an Additive sequence or a Part-by-Part sequence affect performance on a map-learning task? 2. Do students classified as held dependent, moderately field - independent, or held independent differ in their performance on a map-learning task? 3. Is there an interaction across visual design format with cognitive style? The sample for this study was composed of 92 four-year college students. Level of held dependence was measured by the GEFT. The analysis of the 3 X 3 research design was by a two-way analysis of variance with posttest scores (which measured immediate recall of map information) as the dependent variable. Map presentation format and cognitive style were independent variables. Results indicated there was no difference in achievement among the three map presentation formats, but that cognitive style was significantly related to posttest scores; that is, a higher level of held independence was associated with more effective map-learning performance.
Ed. Abstract:

This dissertation consists of two parts. The first one is an attempt to define and delimit the concept of structural marker as a tool of text analysis applied to poetic translation. After dealing with the specificity of the poetic text and re-examining the main theories about poetic translation, structural markers are identified with the stylistic features that mark the semantic frame of the text.

Afterwards, we apply the analysis based on the structural markers to 21 poems by Philip Larkin, put into groups by themes. The practical outcome of this analysis the translation to Spanish of this poems, accompanied with a map where the main structural features can be seen; and the theoretical outcome is a stylistic characterisation of Larkin's poetry, which we represent in a stylistic map.

We also find an outline of translation criticism based in this tool called structural marker.

Abstract:
The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between adult attachment style, humility, and relationship satisfaction in college student couples. Attachment style--given its significant role in predicting how individuals feel, think, and behave in relationships--was expected to be an important predictor of humility, although this possibility has rarely been studied empirically. The current study found that: (a) attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were significant, negative predictors of total humility, (b) attachment anxiety (but not attachment avoidance) was a significant, negative predictor of both intrapersonal and interpersonal humility, (c) a romantic partner's attachment avoidance (but not attachment anxiety) was a significant, negative predictor of a target person's relationship satisfaction, and (d) a romantic partner's perceived level of humility was a significant, positive predictor of a target person's relationship satisfaction.

Abstract:
Although proprietary and free web map applications have become an important part of daily life, individual map styling has been neglected for a fairly long time. With the latest possibilities of custom adjustment provided by many services and some interesting artistic experiments, this is about to change. In the context of artistic cartography and custom map styling, this work explores the possibilities of employing an automated process for the generation of WMTS compatible map tiles with an artistic styling. Web mapping standards and techniques of non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) are considered as well as traditional cartographic representations. Furthermore, existing vector- and raster-based processes are analyzed including an interactive workflow with the open-source image editing software GIMP, which is examined with respect to its drawing capabilities. Based on this, a concept for an automated rendering process is developed and influencing factors along with input parameters are discussed. An experimental automated processing is implemented using GIMP and its Python scripting interface to create single maps and seamless map tiles for the use in a WMTS application. Different drawing techniques of GIMP, such as brushes, dynamics and masks are applied during the rendering process. Geodata is taken from the freely available OpenStreetMap project and it is stored in a geodatabase. Furthermore, the GIS capabilities of the database are used to implement custom query procedures for the creation of seamless tiles, feature simplification and generalization that makes a preprocessing of the data unnecessary. Additionally randomization methods for the estrangement and abstraction of the SVG vector graphics geometry to emulate a hand-drawn appearance are created based on non-photorealistic rendering techniques. As a result, various rendering and abstraction processes are evaluated and discussed regarding their contribution to an artistic appearance. Map tiles are created using these stylings which are WMTS compatible and can be presented in a web mapping application.

Scotto, Lo Massese Dominique. Aix-Marseille 1, 1991. http://www.theses.fr/1991AIX10018.

Full text
Abstract:
That research on the classicism and the modernity of style and versification in les fleurs du mal intends to show how, making use of his classical inheritance, baudelaire knew how to give his poetry a modern turn which takes the realities of his time into account. Classicism appears in them orpho-syntax with verbal constructions and sentence patterns, and in the versification with the use of the sonnet, quatrains with alternate rhymes, alexandrines and octosyllabics, and binary rhythm. We find it again in the lexicon characterized by mythological and biblical references, the classical meaning of words, the use of latin and the propriety of terms, in the proceedings of style like the characterization and the figures of speech. The modernity, perceived in the morpho-syntax in which original graphs are added to the functions of indicative tenses and to the declarative statements, is obvious in the versification with the use of the odd metres, the combination of odd and even, triple rhythm, irregular divisions with stanza enjambments, and with the disposition of rhymes in sonnets. It impregnates the lexicon in which appear the poet's inspirers and contemporaries, technical neologisms, the realism or the exoticism of landscapes before shining in baudelaire's favourite figures of speech : oxymorons, metaphors, comparisons, images and symbols. Classicism and modernity are mixed up with art in style and versification

Abstract:
The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the impact of Internet relationships on regular ongoing relationships from the point of view of those engaged in such relationships. Two studies were conducted. A sample of 75 participants, including 22 females and 53 males who were married or living in defacto relationships and ranging in age from 18 to 75 years completed an anonymous online survey for Study One. Demographic characteristics, frequency and method of communication and relationship satisfaction were investigated. Questions were asked about Internet relationship formation. Respondents were asked to gauge levels of self-disclosure within their regular ongoing relationship and their online relationship. They were also asked about the proximity and physical attractiveness of their online partner. It was found that most respondents communicated daily, were more satisfied with their Internet partner than their regular ongoing partner, considered their Internet partner physically attractive and communicated in a highly intimate manner. The purpose of the second study was to investigate the similarities and differences between the personality characteristics and attachment styles of respondents. Participants in the second study were 133 respondents who were married or living in defacto relationships, including 47 females and 86 males ranging in age from 18 years to 66 years. Respondents completed an anonymous online survey, which included measures of personality (e.g. the International Personality Item Pool, Goldberg, 1999), the Relationship Satisfaction questionnaire (Hendrick, 1988), and the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998). Respondents were found to be somewhat more agreeable and conscientious, and less narcissistic than previous research had found to be the case for those individuals who engaged in face-to-face infidelity. The preoccupied attachment group was well represented, but was less differentiated from the other attachment groups than was the fearful group, who were mainly female. The personality profile and attachment style of respondents in Study Two was, therefore, found to be different in important ways from that which has been associated with face-to-face infidelity. Findings were discussed in terms of methodological implications, suggestions for future research and also implications for Counselling Psychologists.

Abstract:
The design of topographic maps of reference is characterised both by an increasing amount of reference geographic databases and by design geo-services operating in distributed architectures. In this context, one of the major challenges consists in enriching the current knowledge on cartographic design in order to preserve the maps quality, i.e. they are legible, effective and usable. We assume that the topographic style renders maps legible and effective thanks to the visual codes and guides, well-known by the users. Our research purpose aims at formalising the concept of a topographic style as a cartographic family with a recognizable visual signature in order to produce new topographic maps.We propose to formalize key concepts of visual signature and cartographic family in a unified model. We validate and instantiate this model in setting up interviews of cartography experts and in designing user’s experiments allowing to evaluate the visual recognition of maps and graphic signs belonging in Swisstopo and IGN-France cartographic families. With results of the two user’s experiments, we characterize the visual signature of the two cartographic families. Then, we propose cartographic design guidelines in order to produce reference topographic maps based on the characterisation of the visual signature for two cases studies: (1) design a map belonging in a given cartographic family, (2) design a map on the border of two countries / two national mapping agencies

The aim of the study was to study the phenomenon of dyslexia on the basis of a literature study. I did a thorough exposition of what dyslexia is and its history and previous research in the area. Further I assumed two questions at issue which were What testimonies are there from the literature of how it is to live with dyslexia? and What learning styles are there for people with dyslexia? I have taken part of testimonies that are to be found about how it is to live with dyslexia according to the people themselves that live with it. In the second question at issue I move on to present a couple of learning styles that are used. The ones I present are Learning through your senses (Neurolinguistic programming), The Dunn and Dunn learning styles model and Support from the computer. The results were analysed on the basis of the Labelling theory. The results showed that a lot of people with dyslexia have similar experiences from how it is to live with dyslexia, among other things they have felt left outside and have met foolishness from their surroundings. The results from the learning styles models shows that especially the first two models takes consideration to the students unique learning style in different ways. Abstract:
This thesis examined student-participants' self-reported use of romantic relational maintenance strategies and their partners' reports of relational satisfaction. Additionally, individuals outside the romantic relationship reported on student-participants' general communicator style. The research proposed that general style reports would be predictive of relational maintenance strategy usage and of romantic partners' relational satisfaction. The study found that general style behaviors may not be indicative of relational maintenance strategy usage or romantic partners' relational satisfaction. Tests of sex differences revealed that females' expression of various relational maintenance strategies and style behaviors are associated with male partners' relational satisfaction; however, no results were obtained indicating specific behaviors expressed by males result in female partners' relational satisfaction.

Cowan, Mary Louise. "There's nothing funny about the evolution of humour : the impact of sex, style, and status on humour production and appreciation." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/21792.

Full text
Abstract:
The sense of humour is a uniquely human skill and understanding humour is an important and rewarding part of social interaction. This thesis begins by discussing the definition of humour, followed by a review of the evidence we have that humour is an evolved and adaptive behaviour. Humour may play an important role in helping individuals to bond and signal cooperation, which may be further communicated by the humour style which is used to communicate. Research has also demonstrated that humour is an attractive quality in a mate, though the precise reasons for this are currently debated (Chapter 1). Empirical work in the first section of the thesis is consistent with evidence demonstrating that humour is attractive and sexually selected for. Chapter 2 tests the influence of modality and relationship context in an effort to further our understanding of why humour is attractive and provides evidence that more attractive people are rated as being funnier than less attractive people. Humour was also found to be more attractive for short-term relationships than long-term relationships, possibly due to the similarity between funniness and flirtatiousness. In Chapter 3, attractiveness ratings of vignettes in the style of personal advertisements, which contained either aggressive or affiliative humour, demonstrated the importance of humour style. An affiliative humour style was more attractive for long-term relationships whereas an aggressive humour style was more attractive for short-term relationships. Further testing provided evidence that humour styles were associated with personality traits which are highly relevant in a mating context, helping to explain the functions of different humour styles. The second section of the thesis examines the relationship between humour, cooperation, and dominance as an alternative explanation for the evolution of humour. Chapter 4 contains an extended introduction to the physical, verbal, and nonverbal cues to dominance and the sex differences that exist in expressive behaviours. Chapter 5 continues this theme and elaborates further on the function of humour in group situations, before providing empirical evidence of how humour is used in the context of a competitive ‘desert-island’ style conversation between same-sex dyads. Chapter 6 further expands on this line of research as empirical evidence presented in this chapter demonstrates that males may be using humour as a way of communicating the desire to cooperate with other males who are of a similar level of dominance. The communication of dominance is further examined in Chapter 7, where ethological evidence showed that males who were more physically dominant tended to knock doors with greater frequency than males who were less physically dominant. In the final chapter of the thesis (Chapter 8), the evolution of humour is discussed in light of the evidence presented in Chapters 2-7. The thesis presents evidence to suggest that humour production is an important skill for males for two reasons. Firstly, a good sense of humour is a highly attractive quality to females and may be a cue to genetic quality or good partner qualities, depending on the humour style used. Secondly, it may be important for males to use humour to signal cooperation to other males in order to form alliances. In females, the evidence presented in the thesis suggests that humour production may be a way for females to demonstrate romantic interest or flirtatiousness but the function of humour use between females remains largely inconclusive.

Abstract:
Infidelity violates a western norm that a range of interpersonal behaviours should remain exclusive in committed romantic relationships. Once exposed, the aftermath can be detrimental to all concerned. However, despite a cultural majority endorsing this belief and apprised of the potential consequences of its violations, infidelity or extradyadic relationships are widespread. Furthermore, individual differences in beliefs about what constitutes infidelity blur the boundaries of acceptable behaviour, making the concept of unfaithfulness difficult to fully describe. This variation in attitudes and behaviour, along with the consistent media attention infidelity attracts affirms the enigmatic nature of the behaviour. In response, an aim of the study was to clarify the construct of infidelity among a contemporary Australian sample. This was achieved in two ways. Firstly, the study examined beliefs and behaviours associated with unfaithfulness using qualitative (focus group) and largely quantitative (survey) data. Secondly, the study involved investigation of the association between infidelity and several individual, relationship and environmental variables. Differences in relationships and environmental conditions can be conceptualised within the theoretical framework of the investment model, while adult attachment theory and a lovestyles typology offer theoretical underpinnings to the study of individual differences. Specifically, the aim of this stage of the study was to examine how adult attachment styles (anxious, avoidant), lovestyles (eros, ludus, storge, mania, pragma, agape), relationship variables (satisfaction, investment, commitment), and an environmental variable (perceived alternatives) predicted infidelity. The sample comprised 243 women and 69 men between the ages of 18 and 60 years (M = 31.3 years, SD = 11.9) who were currently in a romantic relationship of at least one year or who had recently been in such a relationship. Participants completed measures pertaining to attachment, lovestyles and various aspects of relationship quality in addition to several measures of extradyadic behaviour. The study found that infidelity, as defined by respondents, was engaged in by 20% of individuals in their current relationships and by 42% of individuals in their previous relationships. Regarding the nature of infidelity, the current findings indicated that various sexual and emotional behaviours carried out with someone other than one's primary partner were considered unfaithful by the vast majority, while fantasy and flirting behaviours were generally seen as acceptable. It was noteworthy, however, that a substantial minority also viewed fantasy as unfaithful, underlining the inherent complexity of the construct. The hypotheses concerning the variables predicting infidelity were partially supported. Results suggested that individuals most likely to engage in extradyadic behaviour were those with an avoidant attachment style or a Ludus lovestyle, more perceived alternatives to their relationship, and most unexpectedly, higher levels of investment in their relationship. Conversely, those least likely to engage in these behaviours were those with an Eros Lovestyle and greater levels of commitment to their relationship. The study confirmed the prevalence of infidelity and emphasised the differential attitudes, behaviours and motivations associated with it. These differences are discussed in relation to the theories presented and an argument is made for research on infidelity to take a broader focus, one that includes the combined aspects of individuals, their relationships and the environment. Implications of these findings for individuals and couples and for the professionals who work with them are discussed, along with suggestions for future research.

Ng, Y. L. E. "A systemic approach to translating style : a comparative study of four Chinese translations of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2009. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/18012/.

Full text
Abstract:
The visibility of translators in translated texts has been increasingly recognised, yet research on the translator’s voice and the methodological issues concerned has remained sparse. Corpus-based methods allow only limited access to the motivation of the translator’s choices, and need to be complemented by other research tools to form a coherent methodology for investigating a translator’s style. The thesis adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining systemic linguistics and corpus studies with sociohistorical research within a descriptive framework to study the translator’s discursive presence in the text. This approach is as yet underexplored in translation studies. My work examines four Chinese translations of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea (1952), by Hai Guan (1956), Wu Lao (1987), Li Xiyin (1987) and Zhao Shaowei (1987). The investigation concerns the rendering of transitivity, modality, direct speech and free direct thought presentation as well as the transitions of modes of point of view. It also inquires into the causes of the variation in style between the four translators. I map textual features onto specific sociocultural and ideological contexts of production in an attempt to identify correlations between them. Another objective is to test the applicability of Halliday’s transitivity model (1994) and Simpson’s model of point of view (1993) to the analysis of Chinese translated texts, and to explore possible adjustments to these models to make them serviceable for translation comparison between English and Chinese. The thesis has six chapters: (1) Theoretical approaches, methodological tools and framework, (2) Location of the texts within the sociocultural contexts, (3) Translation of the transitivity system, (4) Translation of point of view, (5) Critical analysis of individual examples and (6) Motivations for translation shifts.

In this subjective hero concept lies an intriguing aspect of Bakhtin's paradigm: A hero is not necessarily a living entity; a hero can be ideas, objects and locations. When viewed through the lens of traditional western rhetorical theory, Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea appears as a monologue wherein Santiago seemingly speaks for the author about the subject of doom and man's relationship to the world.

Weston, Rebecca. "The mediating and moderating effects of women's attachment style on interrelationships among emotional abuse, physical aggression and relational stability." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2001. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc3024/.

Full text
Abstract:
This purpose of this study was to combine two bodies of literature on relationships, attachment and violence. Given the impact of men's physical aggression and emotional abuse on women, it is likely that these behaviors would also affect attachment. A model proposing that women's attachment style mediated and moderated the relationship between partners' physical and emotional abuse and the stability of women's relationships was tested. Archival data were used from two waves of interviews with a sample of lowincome, ethnically diverse community women. Most (89%) of the initial 835 participants of Project HOW: Health Outcomes of Women completed at least one additional interview providing information on the status of their initial relationships. Of these women, 39% were African American, 30% were Euro-American, and 31% were Mexican American. The effects of men's psychological abuse and physical violence on women's attachment style were tested with regression analyses. The interrelationships between partners' abuse, attachment and relational stability were tested with SEM. Attachment style was expected to moderate the associations among variables and mediate the impact of partners' negative behavior on relational stability. In regression analyses, partners' psychological abuse predicted avoidant and anxious, but not secure attachment ratings. Violence, although significant, explained less variance than psychological abuse for insecure attachment ratings. SEM indicated Physical Aggression was not a significant predictor of Attachment Rating in any group. Moderation was not found. There were no differences between attachment groups. Therefore, attachment was tested in the sample as a mediator. As in analyses for each group, the path from Physical Aggression to Attachment Rating was not significant. In the final model, Emotional Abuse predicted Physical Aggression and Attachment Rating mediated the effect of Emotional Abuse on Relational Stability. Specifically, Emotional Abuse increased (insecure) Attachment Rating, which decreased Relational Stability. Overall, previous research in the violence literature was extended by showing that emotional abuse affected attachment, rather than the reverse.

Abstract:
The major characteristics of Joyce's stylistic achievement in the organic unity of contents and expressions are, firstlyp the 'style* is not intended to reveal the author but the whatness, of his characters and subjects described and secondly Joyce's 'style' contains in itself particular meanings beyond the limits of the semantic and lexical contents of words. These features are more specifically defined as his use of the language for mimetic purposes to revealp suggest and represent consciousness (sometimes even unconscious and subconscious) mood, emotion mental patterns thought processes physical movement situation impression and sound effects through his command of the rhythmical syntactical and other grammatical, and phonological possibilities of his medium. In his earlier worksp Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man(and Stephen Hero for comparison with the Portrait) examination of the variety of his mimetic devices and their purposes contributes to the better comprehension of his works where each stylistic pattern, whether occurring in limited locality or throughout is woven into the whole design of the works. The main recurrent devices can roughly be distinguished as follows andt accordingly, Joyce's mimetic creative ability and variety in his earlier works are to be examined under the following classification: 1. Rhythmic (defined as 'repetition with variations') devices to represent and reveal certain concealed aspects and qualities of his characters; firstly, for characterization by means of special devices of appellations and secondly for revealing the preoccupations and concerns. II. Syntactical grammatical and rhythmic devices to represent, reflect and suggest firstly, his characters thought processes mental patterns emotion, mood and other psychological aspects, and secondly physical movement situation, atmosphere and impression. III. Phonological devices to imitate and suggest actual and imaginary sounds.

The purpose of this essay was to study what students at the upper secondary levels thought that they learned in physical education and if there were differences between girls and boys learning. The purpose was also to study different factors that could affect the learning and to show how curriculum and prior research relate to the students learning. In this essay we used the three aspects of health that are mentioned in the description of physical education: the physical, the social and the psychic. The study was based on a quantitative research where 165 students answered questionnaires about their learning. Our research showed that the students did not get the knowledge that the A-course in physical education should provide and that the goals for the course were not accomplished. From a gender perspective the boys learned more in comparison to the girls in several areas. The study also showed that the students that were physically active and who thought that physical education was fun were the ones who learned the most from the education. The students learning were also affected by different learning styles and by the teachers and their ways to plan their lessons.

Full text
Abstract:
As conflicts more or less are inevitable in projects and workplaces, it is a central issue for organizations (Tonnquist, 2016). As early as in 1995, conflicts were described as becoming increasingly prevalent, due to lack of loyalty between employees and employers (Wall & Callister, 1995). Today, teamwork is the exception that proves the rule (De Dreu & Weingart, 2003) and teamwork as a way of working is described as another contributing factor to the emergence of conflicts (Wall & Callister, 1995). As there is no research that highlights the team member’s perspectives and their experiences of conflict management, this is an interesting subject to study. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to contribute to an increased understanding of how team members experience conflict management. Theories about types of conflict, conflict management styles and temporality, in combination with a phenomenological perspective, have been used to fulfill the aim of the study. In order to contribute to an increased understanding of the phenomenon, a comparative case study of four cases has been carried out. The cases that have been studied have been team members and empirical data have been collected through semi-structured interviews. The phenomenon has been studied in the context team and organization. To compile and analyze the empirical data, thematic analysis and cross case synthesis were used as tools. The study reveals, among other things, that team members experience conflicts as something positive, since conflicts can contribute to the development of individuals' ability to understand people or a team's performance. It has been argued that the adoption of certain conflict management styles leads to the emergence of new conflicts (DeChurch, Hamilton & Haas, 2007) but this study shows that these styles can also be used to counteract the emergence of these conflicts. Furthermore, this study shows that managers as third parties have an important role in the management of conflict situations and by taking part of this study, managers can become aware of the consequences of their actions. Finally, the study reveals that when team members manage conflicts themselves, they use their precious experiences concerning conflicts. It has previously been discussed that temporality should be included in the theories used (Hernes, Simpson & Söderlund, 2013) and this study also acknowledges that the time perspective should be integrated into existing theories of conflict and conflict management.

Weiss, Lennart. Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Tyska, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-110097.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the nowadays largely unknown Austrian author Raoul Auernheimer (1876-1948). It is an attempt at a presentation of his life and work, the main part dealing with four of his works, the play Talent (1900), the long story Laurenz Hallers Praterfahrt (1913), the novel Das Kapital (1923) and the autobiographical report Die Zeit im Lager (1939). My purpose is to investigate to what extent his works reflect time, Auernheimers life and the city of Vienna. An introductory chapter on life and work deals with the most important events in his life. It is clear, that he was one of the major personalities in the field of culture in Vienna before and after World War I and an outstanding intellectual who stood for democratic values. When he was 61 the Nazis forced him to leave Austria, after first having put him into the concentration camp Dachau for five months. He was then in exile in the USA where, in spite of a heart condition, he lived on for nine more years. A section on secondary literature and an almost complete catalogue of his works show their versatility, scope and scale. In this context, his significant role as a drama critic, journalist and essayist becomes evident. The city of Vienna is a central theme in the four works I examined and each date of origin (1900, 1913, 1923, 1939) is significant for the work itself. Work and date indicate radical changes in his literary production and constitute a step in the direction of becoming a person who thinks politically. However these changes meant very little to his literary style, which shows continuity. In his works he basically remains a Feuilletonist and playwright. More and more Auernheimer shows his solidarity with the vulnerable groups of society. This is conveyed indirectly, virtually through ‘participating observation‘. By each time describing conditions accurately and exactly, he criticizes current deficiencies. Concerning language it is apparent, that irony is important to his style. Since he views his world critically, he uses it to make social conditions clear. The style of the Feuilleton, in which linguistic brilliance and harmony of text are important components, is characteristic of this author. It is the style of the journalist and critic. Keywords: Raoul Auernheimer, continuity, change, life, work, journalist, critic, Talent, Laurenz Hallers Praterfahrt, Das Kapital, Die Zeit im Lager, time influence, social conditions, participating observation, criticism of current deficiencies, city of Vienna, style of the Feuilleton, irony Lennart Weiss, Department of Modern Languages, Box 636, Uppsala University, SE-751 26 Uppsala, Sweden © Lennart Weiss 2010

To encourage this practice, several pedagogical activities can be performed via Internet. However, to contribute to the teaching of History and spread of Culture and Art, museums have sought space in virtual environments. From this premise, it was observed that virtual museums can be seen as an important tool in the teaching and learning process. The aim of this work is to propose a cycle to help create learning scenarios from elements of a museum, based on personas technique to support the teaching of History or a related field. In the first part of the study, Action Research methodology was adopted to carry out the investigation process by the teachers, museums expert and students; to verify the viability of the use of learning scenarios. The AR1 was conducted with 14 teachers and 1 museum expert to verify the feasibility of creating a learning scenario from museum elements. Already AR2 was conducted with 174 elementary school students, to verify the acceptance of learning scenarios. One of the results identified by the AR1 were the artifacts required to compose learning scenarios. However, there was a need for a device to aid in building the persona. For this, there was an adjustment in the empathy map technique called MapLearn as teacher support during the persona construction process. It has also been identified the need to create a cycle to support teachers and museum experts for the creation of learning scenarios. The validation of the proposal included the evaluation of MapLearn; cycle e-MuLearn; and learning scenarios, through 2 case studies and a controlled experiment. The analyses showed that the cycle e-MuLearn and their artifacts can contribute to creation of learning scenarios to support teaching of History.
Paris 7, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA070008.

Full text
Abstract:
"Style is everything", said Jean Genêt in his last book Prisoner of Love, which has actually a more documentary tone than his fiction. For a number of reasons, although Genêt's style is a strong feature of his writing, it is often neglected by the critics. This dazzling style is manifest in the fierce, enclosed universe of his novels, filled with eeriness, ostentation, sexual seduction and mystical illusion; and also in his plays, which are permeated with disguise and visual fantasy. Studying the style of all his works, we find a scheme of baroque aesthetics, which refers back to the art history in the 16th century and has re-emerged in modem literature. The baroque spirit, characterised by its preoccupation with artistic will and spiritual salvation, applies ideally to the creation and the "sacred " quest of Jean Genêt, as well as to certain of his contemporaries. Exploring the images and the structure of the aesthetic style which has been called "modem baroque", we re-read Genêt and reconsider his most ambiguous themes : evil and sanctity, death and redemption, aestheticism and eroticism, politics and language, disguise and pretence. At the same time, this research into a particular writer, Genêt, will bring us closer to the heterogeneous nature of the baroque spirit and allow us to propose some new hypothesis for its renaissance in modem times

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of an Attachment-Oriented-Psychoeducational-Group-Training on the preoccupied/insecure attachment style of university students. This study consists of two phases. In the first phase of the study, Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ), Relationship Questionnaire (RQ), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSS), and an Information Form were given to the 755 third year METU students. The differences among the attachment styles (RSQ and RQ) of the participants by gender and self-esteem levels (RSS) were explored by using a 2 (gender) x 2 (high-low self-esteem) factorial MANOVA. Results showed significant self-esteem differences in fearful, preoccupied and secure subscale scores in RQ and RSQ and gender differences in fearful, preoccupied and secure subscale scores of RSQ and RQ. These results indicated that students who had lower self-esteem scored significantly higher in fearful and preoccupied subscales of RSQ while students who had higher self-esteem had statistically significant higher mean scores in secure attachment subscales. No significant differences were found between the insecure/avoidant subscale scores of the high and low self-esteem group students. Results showed that females scored significiantly higher in fearful attachment style of RQ and RSQ. Male students scored significiantly higher in both preoccupied subscales of RQ and RSQ and in secure attachment subscale of RSQ. In the second phase, the Attachment-Oriented-Psychoeducational-Group-Training was implemented to the experimental group of 11 volunteered preoccupied subjects. The control group consisted of 8 preoccupied students. The control group subjects did not receive any training. Both experimental and control groups were given Relationship Scales Questionnaire and Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale at pre-test, post-test and follow up. Non-parametric statistical analyses of Wilcoxon test and Mann-Whitney U test were employed to the RSQ and RSS scores of the subjects to assess the effect of the Attachment-Oriented-Psychoeducational-Group-Training. The results showed that experimental group subjects&amp
#8217
secure attachment subscale scores have increased from pre-test to posttest but not pre-test to follow up or posttest to follow up tests of both RSQ and RSS. A significant difference was found between pre and follow up tests scores of RSS for control group.

Abstract:
Leadership is an important part of creating successful and competitive organizations where em-ployees feel good and can develop (Granberg, 2011). The leader is the one who has the greatest influence over the employees as they can use their behavior to influence how the employees think and act (Granberg, 2011; Jacobsen & Thorsvik, 2014). Therefore, it is important that first-line managers practice a leadership style that promotes motivation and commitment as it is a leader who works closely with his employees. Managers' leadership and work situation in el-derly care have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions that have been established (Coronakommissionen, 2020).The purpose of this study is to investigate how first-line managers in elderly care, feel that the pandemic has affected their ability to exercise their leadership. The study has a qualitative re-search approach, and the data collection is based on eight semi-structured interviews. The em-pirics have been analyzed with the help of previous research on different leadership styles. The results show that the line managers experience an impact on both conditions and leadership. Constantly changing guidelines and routines have required a more flexible leadership, and new tasks have led to a higher workload. The pandemic has also caused great concern among both employees and managers, which has increased the need for support from both the organization and colleagues. At the same time, the transition from physical to digital meetings has made it more difficult to communicate with employees and colleagues, which in turn has affected the ability to give and receive support. One conclusion that can be drawn from the result is that the managers had to combine different leadership styles during the pandemic. To be able to support anxious employees and ensure that the new guidelines are followed, a mixture of empathic and governing leadership is needed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate managers in the PR-industry. We want, through defined communication styles, define managers’ point of view of their communication. We also want to see if there is any difference in how women and men communicate in their working places. The methodology that is used is a qualitative research method, and the empirical material is collected through semi structured interviews, at eight PR-companies in Gothenburg and Stockholm. Managers and employees have been interviewed. The findings of this thesis are that there is no big difference in women’s and men’s point of view of their communication. The two communication styles that managers - both men and women - in the PR-industry consider themselves to use is through preciseness and inspiration. To be as concrete as possible is something that all the managers we interviewed value highly but there is a difference in how it is conducted between the genders.

Abstract

Birgitta Norberg Brorsson. 2007. Man liksom bara skriver. Skrivande och skrivkontexter i grundskolans år 7 och 8. (You just kind of write. Writing and writing contexts in the years 7 and 8 of the compulsory school).

This thesis deals with writing and writing contexts in the latter part of the Swedish compulsory school and with the interrelationship between the individual and the context, between the pupil, the teacher, the instruction of writing in the short and long perspective and the school as organization and institution. The general aim of the study is to deepen the understanding of school writing and its conditions by describing, analysing and interpreting the writing instruction from the teachers’, the pupils’ and my own perspectives. Fieldwork for my ethnographic study was conducted in two parallel classes, 36 pupils in all, over three terms in which all texts written during Swedish lessons were gathered. The theoretical framework is the sociocultural approach based on research by Vygotsky and Bachtin. Six texts written by three pupils regarding structure, style and teacher’s written response and the instruction in connection with the writing are analysed. The instruction in the long perspective is analysed with regard to what extent it offered the pupils coherence in their studies. To analyse the instruction in an organizational and institutional view concepts from Berg’s studies on school cultures and Langer’s research on effective American schools are used.

One major result is that the task, the receiver, the teacher’s response and the non-dialogic classrooms are factors with great impact on the pupils’ texts. Most tasks require that the pupil’s private, personal life and experiences are focused, e.g. in the many narrative texts, whereas discursive texts are not represented at all in the material. The instruction in the long perspective can in the main be characterised as catalogues, i.e. it does not lead to knowledge-in-action and is similar to Swedish as a proficiency subject. As to teacher response it is not possible to see any progression during the three terms but the same aspects are commented on in most texts in both classes and do not improve the texts. The culture and traditions of the school are important influencing factors in the teaching. One reason for this is the lack of in-service training of the teachers when the new steering system of the Swedish school was introduced in the middle of the 1990’s. When organizations undergo fundamental changes traditions seem to exercise greater influence on actors than otherwise. Time has great impact on school activities and three conflicting concepts of time are present at school: the pupil’s activity time, the teacher’s linear time and the institutional time. The work teams play a vital role for the teachers but the care of the pupils take most of their time. Pedagogic and didactic discussions are rare and subject matters have no forum at all. Many of the factors in the writing contexts are institutionally influenced and hence difficult to change but teachers and pupils are actors in school as organization and institution. This means that they can reproduce or transform the structures. In this there are developmental potentials.

Key words: compulsory school, writing contexts, school genres, structure, style, response, knowledge-out-of-context, individual, narrative, in-service training, subject didactics, time, work teams, institution

Eleven years since his death, in Paris, and one hundred since his birth, in Transylvania, this one author, the perfect stranger in more than one sense, remains largely unknown by the Brazilian audience, scholarly or not, in such a way that his shady aura, so to speak, as well as countless legends and rumors prevail about his life, personality and thought. Having said that, and apart from his own will to marginality, Cioran is a thinker who just can t and will not remain as such for much longer ignored or spurned, be it by Academia as such or by particular intellectual milieus with varied ideological outlooks. All the more when it comes to reflect upon problems which happen to be just as prevailing as worrying, such as the rise of integralism and of fanaticism, be it religious or of any other kind, atheism, skepticism and nihilism in the XXth century, anguish, despair, the metaphysical need of mankind and the sense of ultimate transcendence, suffering, death, suicide, evil, finally, a wide range of questions which are all highly relevant from a philosophical standpoint and also that of human sciences. In the first part of this inquiry, we aim at showing that philosophical pessimism and apophatic dwell mix up in the existential metaphysics of Cioran, a religious philosophy of existence which, not being guided up by the faith in revealed truths and by the adhesion to external authorities, aims to think human existence and condition according to that which is most imperious and essential, in Cioran s view, when it comes to the metaphysical animal: wisdom rather than science, deliverance by disillusion rather than salvation by faith and knowledge, the need for the absolute to the detriment of the delusions of becoming, coping with the contingency inherent to existence, namely human existence, tragically gifted with reflexive consciousness, freedom, a destiny. Cioran s organically existential thought is inseparable from, as he puts it, from his own life experience, namely the insomnia to which he accredits the merit or the fault for his blessed, for his cursed lucidity: a state of mind incompatible with life, turning life into a state of non-suicide . If there is pessimism, skepticism, nihilism, mysticism within the sum of attitudes that composes the works of Cioran, such attitudes which might as well be modalized as reactions to the problem of evil, all these tendencies emanate from insomnia-bred lucidity. Secondly, we shall turn our attention to the topic of Cioran s écriture, with everything it implies, differently than his Romanian writing, as far as style, concern for expression and the aestheticizing of discourse are concerned. We aim at showing that the Farewell to philosophy enounced by the author in A short history of decay (Précis de decomposition), parallel to his literary turn and the radicalization of the fragmentary principle that precedes his French writing, is the paradoxical expression of a negation-driven thought which, by betraying Philosophy with Poetry, Music and Mysticism, cannot help but pay an unheard-of tribute to Human thought and to Philosophy itself. Finally, we argue that Cioran s French works represent, by its form and content, the necessary consequence and exact expression of a lucid, organic thought, which discovers in the écriture de soi the very destiny of Western Philosophy, and in Style as adventure the highest form of modern-thought heroism

Abstract:
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of a sample of 29 students who participated in an educational experience in Planning and Analysis of Transportation Systems Course for civil engineering course from Escola de Engenharia de São Carlos, Universidade de São Paulo. This experience elapsed from the application of problem-based learning (PBL) method in a blended learning mode using a web-based learning - CoL (Cursos on-Line) - with the support of the leaning styles. The data were collected through the Felder and Solomans instrument - Index of Learning Styles (ILS) to identify the students learning styles. The portuguese version of the ILS was applied at the beginning of the course to find the students learning preferences to assist the development of activities directed to the public, and the composition of the groups according to their styles seeking a better use in the course. To examine the use of the sample submitted to the instructional alternative and the effects of PBL were used the responses of the students to a questionnaire for assessing the new proposal responded at the end of the course, and a questionnaire for assessment of learning that was used after the closure of the course. Cognitive maps were built from the answers of the questionnaire that contributed to this assessment and also to make the comparison of the sample with a group of students submitted to the traditional model. Besides these instruments were used the grades of the sample and also of the other group of students regularly enrolled in the same course, but without the introduction of pedagogical innovations. These grades were analyzed with the aim of investigating the relationship between the learning styles and the PBL method, and to verify the presence of differentiated performance between the groups of students. The results of the qualitative and quantitative analysis showed that students obtained a significantly better performance with the new course design.

Maneuvrier, Hervieu Arthur. Thesis, Normandie, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020NORMC035.

Abstract:
Virtual reality has emerged as a new paradigm for research and scientific applications. The ability of this technology to simulate complex custom-made situations offers researchers the opportunity to study behaviours with a laboratory methodological control and an ecological dimensions. The latter is made possible by the emergence of the feeling (or “sense”) of presence, the sensation of "being there", a phenomenon at the heart of in virtuo studies. The present work is part of a meth-odological and fundamental framework aimed at advancing the emergence of a body of knowledge on virtual reality and its sense of presence. The global understanding of the sense of presence remains very limited, especially with regard to its links with performance in virtual reality. Whether it is for diagnostic purposes or for the investigation of human behaviour, the question of the relationship between the sense of presence and performance is crucial: if presence promotes performance, for example by increasing scores during a neuropsychological test, it becomes a systematic bias inherent to the tool that must be controlled in any rigorous experiment. This ques-tion remains little studied in the literature, mostly because it is complexified by the interactions between a whole set of adjacent variables – gender, cybersickness, cognitive style, video game experience – but also because performance can take many different forms, making it particularly difficult to infer directional causality. In order to explore this question, the present work proposes three experiments on three different types of evaluation: executive functions, spatial cognition, semantic learning. The data collected in this way is also the object of transversal analyses de-signed to compare the experiments. Together, these results seem to suggest the existence of two components of virtual reality. The first, the cognitive profile, is made up of individual human factors interacting with system factors – notably the degree of integration of the task into the virtual envi-ronment – to build the second, the user experience. The sense of presence and performance, but also their relationship depends on the user experience. This model, presented in conclusion, is discussed with regard to different theoretical approaches to cognition, notably the ecological and computational theories. This discussion makes it possible to draw up a list of recommendations and perspectives for virtual reality users, including the possibilities of estimating a priori the user experience of an individual immersed in virtual reality

Abstract:
When sorrow replaces love Violence in intimate relationships: Randomness or effects of parental heritage? Abstract: This research aims at determining whether there are schemas originated by parenting styles (PSs) or early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) that predispose women, who were victims of violence in their intimate relationships, to choose abusive romantic partners. Additionally it intends to identify how victimization reveals itself through romantic relationship types that are due to repair the Self narcissistic vulnerabilities. This quantitative study relies on three instruments (PSQ, SQ, ITRA) filled by 27 women with ages between 23-67, 10 of which were victims of violence in their intimate relationships. This study concludes that there are PSs and EMSs that seem to predispose to the choice of abusive romantic partners. These romantic choices seem to be related with the predisposition to more pathological romantic relationship types, namely, the avoidant-devaluate and euphoricidealizing types. Following this, a model was created to characterize individuals as victims or non-victims of violence in their intimate relationships with a precision of 96.3%, based on the results of the instruments above.

Abstract:

The modernity including its promise of adventure, power, joy, growth, interior change and change of the things around it (...) is at the same time the threat to all we have, all we know, all we are (Berman, 1988). According to this idea, the environment issue claims the problematicals consequences of the modernity and capitalist dynamics. Many are the environment problems, such as the freatic water pollution. These resources already supply more than 50% of the world population with water. The way today we face the environment problem and the way we understand them, its instruments, its politics such as all the dynamic brought in the search of its confrontation, are part of the big questions of this century. The freatic water environment problems occurs whenever more people demand higher life style standard with cheaper technologies, even if the involuntary sub products include the soil degradation, the toxic polluter, the animal species´ extinction or the climate changes. The environment is the totality of physiographic factors (soil), water, forest, relief, geology, landscape, meteorological factors and climate factors added to psycho-socials inherent to human nature (such as behavior, well-being, mind spirit, job, health, food) added to sociological factors such as culture, civility, sociability, respect and peace. So the planet Earth should be considered as a unique system. As we expand our understanding about the system which controls the environment and its never-ending interconnections, potential solutions will consolidate. The study of freatic water systems capacity/potentiality and natural geosystems as support to human needs will be a way of consolidating the scientific knowledge. It will do the necessary inter-relation between the natural environment and human potentiality. This way, an increasing consciousness related to environment issue appears as the possibility of the union between human and nature, both can t be analyzed as excludents poles. In the next pages, Goiânia and Aparecida de Goiânia cities are explore about yours underground water.

Abstract:
The vehicles of tomorrow will be more sophisticated, intelligent and safe than the vehicles of today. The future is leaning towards fully autonomous vehicles. This degree project provides a data driven solution for a speed adaptation system that can be used to compute a vehicle speed for curves, suitable for the underlying driving style of the driver, road properties and weather conditions. A speed adaptation system for curves aims to compute a vehicle speed suitable for curves that can be used in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) or in Autonomous Driving (AD) applications. This degree project was carried out at Volvo Car Corporation. Literature in the field of speed adaptation systems and factors affecting the vehicle speed in curves was reviewed. Naturalistic driving data was both collected by driving and extracted from Volvo's data base and further processed. A novel speed adaptation system for curves was invented, implemented and evaluated. This speed adaptation system is able to compute a vehicle speed suitable for the underlying driving style of the driver, road properties and weather conditions. Two different artificial neural networks and two mathematical models were used to compute the desired vehicle speed in curves. These methods were compared and evaluated.

Abstract:
93
This century has been called “Knowledge Economy” in which the knowledge asset is a principal strength in yielding true values in economy. The recently popular concept of “Organizational Learning” proposes the implementation of Learning Organization as a solution to match the endless challenges in this century. Accordingly, the overall focus has been placed on organizational competence in gaining and utilizing knowledge. The developing learning theory from “Teaching Learning Strategies”, “Mastery Learning”, “Constructivist Learning” to the “Scaffolding Learning” has benefited the development of Organizational Learning. In the academic context, the educators enable students in simulating the practical situation to learn thru decision making. This is termed “Scenario Learning”. More research on students in the higher education reveal that effective learning should be an adaptive process in which the educators align the teaching formats and methods based on students’ different characters. This is the modern concept of “Adaptive Instruction”. The term Adaptive Instruction means the educators align and adjust the curricular to fit in learners’ different competence, interests, habits and needs. From the standing points of personnel training in the industry, such concept is still one of the major principles in Organizational Learning. Therefore, this research would like to explore the possible alignment on those Group Learning related control variables so that the effectiveness and efficiency of overall knowledge transformation in an organizational context could be significantly improved. Among those theoretical learning concepts, we adopt the Learning Style of each different learner as the representative of learners’ characters; among those different practices in achieving Organizational Learning, we choose personnel training in groups ( the Group Learning ) as the representative of Team Learning in the context of Organizational Learning. As for the Adaptive Instruction we employ the “Scenario Learning” and “Cooperative Learning” to align the scenario instructions and learning community in meeting learners’ different learning styles. For instance, based on the facts that every learner is categorized into one of the four different Learning Styles namely “Accommodator”, “Diverger”, “Converger” and “Assimilator”, educators should employ the teaching format of interactive disscusion for those Divergers, and teaching format of subject reading and problem solving for those Assimilators, and so on. This research will experiment a periodical ISO9000 Quality Audits training course offered by the joint research company. The course requirements of case study and workshop set out by the course accreditation authority happens to be in line with the concepts of Scenario Learning and Cooperative Learning. By developing a multimedia teaching learning platform on internet, we would be able to arrange adaptive instruction format for different learning styles; and by the group workshop and group assignment required in the training process, we could plan adaptive learning community for different learning styles. Finally the pretest and posttest on all course participants would tell the group learning effects objectively. Via the solid validation in this research, we expect to develop a model of adaptive instruction, which is effective in improving the outcomes of group learning.

Abstract:
104
The development of education has driven by the evolution of science and technology. With assistance of science and technology, education broke through the previous restriction from traditional education to a new level of e-learning. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) proposed a knowledge-sharing project called “Open Course” at Education Technology Conference in 1999, and Open Course Ware (OCW) was officially launched in 2002. OCW came into reality being with assistance of science and technology, and also an unprecedented idea of open educational resources. As time went on, Open Course has been improved, due to lack support. At present, the OCW has been evolved to be the famous platform what we called “massive open online course (MOOCs)”. For MOOCs platform, its rich resources, accessibility, convenience and other features attract a lot of learners to gain knowledge through this platform. However, a large number of learners make MOOCs platform difficulty to support a very important consideration - adaptive education. Thus, the most important meaning of e-learning is not only to use how advanced technology can be used to assist education, but also to improve learning effect of education itself. This paper discusses and analyzes the critical weakness part of using MOOCs platform. By using appropriate educational theory, we proposed and designed a system to improve the weak points due to its open dimensions arising from MOOCs platform. If learners can first walk through understanding their own learning style, the proposed system supports to have more options of learning paths during the learning processes, which can make use of the nature characteristics of the mind map. After finishing the learning process, learners can have different styles of post-test designed by the Scaffolding strategy, so as to achieve higher level learning effect for the need from adaptive education.

Abstract:
The term Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR) describes a prominent field in computer graphics that deals with the generation of images that are apparently handmade and deliberately do not correspond to the physically correct image of a model. Neural Style Transfer (NST) is another trend topic for imitating a certain style of an artwork. Here, artistic images are created by separating and recombining image content and style. In the context of the present work, a semi-automatic workflow for the creation of iconographic building representations for use in zoomable web maps has been developed and technically implemented in three artistic style variants using image processing tools in the raster-based open source image processing program GIMP, especially with the filter collection G'MIC.
92
People usually have problems of orientation and positioning when they move in a unfamiliar environment. The wayfinding problem can be solved with spatial information. The map is a convenient information providing tool. The map’s manifestation is the key factor to help people find way. Firstly, in the related literature we discussed the wayfinding problems, the spatial development, the cognitive map, map design and some examples of wayfinding maps. Then we took the Shi-Lin official residence in Taipei city as an example, and made 4 different wayfinding maps with variation in the representation of the view and landmark. Those 4 wayfinding maps are: the top view ground with the top view landmark (M1), the top view of ground with front view landmark (M2), the perspective view of ground with geometry landmark (M3) and the perspective view of ground with concrete landmark (M4). Subjects were divided into four groups, and used different maps to finish the wayfinding tasks of positioning and route memory. We collected the data such as the frequencies of right answer and the average time in the positioning task, the time used of the route memory task, and the subjective satisfaction about all four maps. The result of the statistic analysis showed: 1) the perspective view of ground with concrete landmark (M4) performed better usability and higher subjective satisfaction; 2) no matter with which kind of landmarks, the maps with perspective view of ground performed better in usability and satisfaction than the map with top view. Besides, the result of analysis also showed that male subjects perform better achievement and spatial ability than female subjects. The outcomes of this study can help wayfinding map design in the scope of area-neighborhood space.

Abstract:
100
In the study of the fashion trends and image formation of male fashion styles, though the speed of the replacement cycle and fashion change is far less obvious than female fashion, fine fashion changes can still be observed in male fashion presented in different seasons and years. After such long-term or short-term cycle subjective judgment, or objective factor comparison and analysis, we can conclude the suitable adaptive design principles and the elements of form for male fashion designs. However, the attribute of most publications of fashion study reports and literature is subject criticisms or observational opinions. For example, in his study on the image of male employees, male and female employee fashion image scholar Forsythe (1990) discovered that clothes with modern and masculine images can help employees to find a job more easily. Forsythe (1990) further categorized male fashion with positive male symbols: blazers made with plain fabrics in a dim or cold tone and jackets with an intelligent sense. In general, most studies were conducted through interviews, and their conclusions are rather rough and subjective. The motivation of this study attempts to find if a more persuasive scientific verifications can be achieved by using more objective methods of research in exploring fashion images in addition to a qualitative study. That is, Kansei Engineering is applied to the systemic study of fashion-related issues in order to develop more accurate and richer academic theories for fashion design. The aim of this study is to establish the perceive space in images of male suit styles; and to infer the adaptive design principles through comparison and analysis of the correlations among the elements of suit styles as a reference for practical suit style image design. In fashion design, form image is the most important factor. Regarding the form image of fashion, texture image is the prime affecting factor. Especially for men’s suits, there is not much variation in their shape and style; therefore, the fabrics used in making them determine their texture image. For this reason, this research probed into the texture image of suit fabrics. First, quality analysis and comparison of the image of the suit’s look were conducted to deduce the consumer’s and designer’s common understanding of the prototype of men’s suit. Meanwhile, the frequently used fabrics for making men’s suit were collected. From them, 61 fabrics were selected as tested samples for this study. With expert interview and literature review, the morphological chart of the patterns, weave, and color of the fabrics and 16 related adjective pairs were conc1uded. Then, the experiments of semantic differential (SD) evaluation on the image of these fabric samples as well as of grouping samples with similar fabric texture were conducted. With factor analysis on the SD evaluation data, an image space with four constituting factors was yielded. By examining the distribution of fabric samples in this space, the relationship between the physical features concerning the texture image and the people’s feeling of the image were concluded. Furthermore, this research has figured out a three dimensional perceptual space of texture image of suit fabrics through multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis on the data collected from the similarity grouping experiment. Based on these results, certain principles for the design of image for men’s suits with proper fabrics were proposed.
