Land degradation in drylands (desertification) is an issue that potentially impacts nearly half of the world's human population living on over a third of the Earth's land surface. Despite global concern of the impact of desertification on people and the environment, there is no universal method to assess and map desertification. Methods to assess desertification at the local to regional scale that can fit into a broader global desertification narrative are more appropriate. Using an object relational mapper, ORM, is a good idea if you have an object relational code base and are following standards. By using an ORM you get a separation between actual objects and data persistence. This also makes it possible for the programmer to fully focus on the application without knowing much about how the database itself works.  However, this doesn’t come without drawbacks. Depending what ORM you use and how you use it, it may sacrifice performance.  The research in this thesis shows that using an ORM in a very small application does not sacrifice performance.

Abstract:
The increasing accessibility and versatility of forward-scan (FS) imaging sonars (also known as forward looking sonars or FLS) has spurred the interest of the robotics community seeking to solve the difficult problem of robotic perception in low-visibility underwater scenarios. Processing the incoming data from an imaging sonar is challenging, since it captures an acoustic 2D image of the 3D scene instead of providing straightforward range measurements like other sonar technologies do (e.g. multibeam sonar). Hence, complex postprocessing and sensor fusion techniques are required to extract use

Abstract:
There is a need to understand the spatial distribution of soil taxonomic classes, the spatial distribution of potential biological soil crust, and soil properties related to wind erosion to address land use and management decisions in arid and semi-arid areas of the western USA. Digital soil mapping (DSM) can provide this information. Chapter 2 compared multiple DSM functions and environmental covariate sets at three geographically distinct semi-arid study areas to identify combinations that would best predict soil taxonomic classes. No single model or type of model was consistently the most a

Context. There are several workflows for texturing 3D models. 3D models will often have to be constructed and textured before they can be viewed in a game engine. Files would have to be exported and imported in order to view the result. This thesis will look at the usability of having the programs that are used to construct and texture assets connected with each other. In other words, a program would send and receive data in real-time which can be used to avoid the exporting and importing of assets. Objectives. Define a better workflow for texturing models that will be used for games. Compare

This study combines passive directional dust monitoring methods with ICP-MS analysis, binary mixing modelling and geostatistical modelling to generate dust dispersion maps, enabling a record of Air Pollution Control residue (APC) dust dispersion on and around a hazardous waste landfill site for a complete calendar year. This is therefore, the first study of nuisance dust dispersion on such a scale, using these methods, and the first time these methods have been used in conjunction to accurately visualise dust dispersion data over time. Autonomous vehicles have become the forefront of the automotive industry nowadays, looking to have safer and more efficient transportation systems. One of the main issues for every autonomous vehicle consists in being aware of its position and the presence of obstacles along its path. The current project addresses the pose and terrain mapping problem integrating a visual odometry method and a mapping technique. An RGB-D camera, the Kinect v2 from Microsoft, was chosen as sensor for capturing information from the environment. It was connected to an Intel mini-PC for real-time processing. Both p
