Abstract:
ABSTRACT; The present research seeks to answer the question: What is the importance of consumers' perception for the brand equity of TAP PORTUGAL? To achieve the objectives of the research a case study of methodology was done, having prepared interviews with the responsible for the marketing area of the Portuguese Airline, and proceeded to gather information (TAP, ANA-AEROPORTOS publications, among others; and, have applied a questionnaire to the TAP PORTUGAL passengers who made the check-in in the International Airport of Lisbon) to make a profound study of the case. Research results indicate that the new image analysis of TAP PORTUGAL from passengers, is generally very positive, and aligned with the objectives outlined in rebranding carried out in 2005. This research contributes to systematize and clarify the consumer's perceptions for the brand equity of TAP PORTUGAL, and draw some comparative conclusions on the objectives proposed and implemented in the rebranding operation with the customers’ perception that have the new image, contributing to improve the brand management strategy. Kanneganti, Raghuveer. "CLASSIFICATION OF ONE-DIMENSIONAL AND TWO-DIMENSIONAL SIGNALS." OpenSIUC, 2014. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/892.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the classification of one-dimensional and two-dimensional signals. The one-dimensional signal classification problem involves the classification of brain signals for identifying the emotional responses of human subjects under given drug conditions. A strategy is developed to accurately classify ERPs in order to identify human emotions based on brain reactivity to emotional, neutral, and cigarette-related stimuli in smokers. A multichannel spatio-temporal model is employed to overcome the curse of dimensionality that plagues the design of parametric multivariate classifiers for multi-channel ERPs. The strategy is tested on the ERPs of 156 smokers who participated in a smoking cessation program. One half of the subjects were given nicotine patches and the other half were given placebo patches. ERPs were collected from 29 channel in response to the presentation of the pictures with emotional (pleasant and unpleasant), neutral/boring, and cigarette-related content. It is shown that human emotions can be classified accurately and the results also show that smoking cessation causes a drop in the classification accuracies of emotions in the placebo group, but not in the nicotine patch group. Given that individual brain patterns were compared with group average brain patterns, the findings support the view that individuals tend to have similar brain reactions to different types of emotional stimuli. Overall, this new classification approach to identify differential brain responses to different emotional types could lead to new knowledge concerning brain mechanisms associated with emotions common to most or all people. This novel classification technique for identifying emotions in the present study suggests that smoking cessation without nicotine replacement results in poorer differentiation of brain responses to different emotional stimuli. Future, directions in this area would be to use these methods to assess individual differences in responses to emotional stimuli and to different drug treatments. Advantages of this and other brain-based assessment include temporal precision (e.g, 400-800 ms post stimulus), and the elimination of biases related to self-report measures. The two-dimensional signal classification problems include the detection of graphite in testing documents and the detection of fraudulent bubbles in test sheets. A strategy is developed to detect graphite responses in optical mark recognition (OMR) documents using inexpensive visible light scanners. The main challenge in the formulation of the strategy is that the detection should be invariant to the numerous background colors and artwork in typical optical mark recognition documents. A test document is modeled as a superposition of a graphite response image and a background image. The background image in turn is modeled as superposition of screening artwork, lines, and machine text components. A sequence of image processing operations and a pattern recognition algorithm are developed to estimate the graphite response image from a test document by systematically removing the components of the background image. The proposed strategy is tested on a wide range of scanned documents and it is shown that the estimated graphite response images are visually similar to those scanned by very expensive infra-red scanners currently employed for optical mark recognition. The robustness of the detection strategy is also demonstrated by testing a large number of simulated test documents. A procedure is also developed to autonomously determine if cheating has occurred by detecting the presence of aberrant responses in scanned OMR test books. The challenges introduced by the significant imbalance in the numbers of typical and aberrant bubbles were identified. The aberrant bubble detection problem is formulated as an outlier detection problem. A feature based outlier detection procedure in conjunction with a one-class SVM classifier is developed. A multi-criteria rank-of-rank-sum technique is introduced to rank and select a subset of features from a pool of candidate features. Using the data set of 11 individuals, it is shown that a detection accuracy of over 90% is possible. Experiments conducted on three real test books flagged for suspected cheating showed that the proposed strategy has the potential to be deployed in practice.

Abstract:
It is known that for the study of continuous dynamical systems the discret case plays an important role because, with it we can study the continuous one by using the Poincaré return map. In the discret case we can distinguish between conservative maps (or area preserving maps, in the case of flows living on a 3-dimensional manifold) and non conservative maps. Among the last ones, there are the dissipative maps. Two of the main subjects of the study of dissipative maps are: the existence or not of attracting periodic orbits and the possible existence of strange attractors -that is, attractors that are neither periodic orbits nor invariant curves, which are minimal and contain a dense orbit. Moreover, these attractors can have sensitive dependence on the initial conditions, or have an absolutely continuous invariant measure. On the other hand there exists a transition between these two behaviours: the so-called flip or period doubling bifurcation cascade. After the final of this cascade (in a suitable set of parameters), strange attractors can appear, and also more attracting periodic orbits.

This doctoral dissertation is divided in four chapters:

In the first one we study the dynamics of the so called logistic map; more specifically, we study first fold and flip bifurcations of this family, giving analytical expressions of the parameter values for which they occur. In the second chapter, we consider the Hénon map with strong dissipation. In the third chapter we study the Newhouse phenomenon. To this end we prove a more complete version of the phenomenon than others proved before, in which we show the existence of generic saddle-node and flip bifurcations, for parameters close to the parameter of homoclinic tangency. In chapter four we study the behaviour of the codimension one and two bifurcations in one and two dimensional families of maps. To do this, we consider one-parameter families of diffeomorphisms, to study saddle-node and flip bifurcations, and two-parameter families of dissipative diffeomorphisms, to study cusps and codimension two flips.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract I used individual-based capture-mark-recapture data and genetic markers to gain understanding of the demographic and genetic processes operating in small and declining populations of two different species, the willow tit Parus montanus and the Siberian flying squirrel Pteromys volans. Both species have declined in Finland and the flying squirrel has been considered to be vulnerable. The willow tit study was conducted in northern Finland, near city of Oulu. The population size in the studied area has on average been stable during the past decade. Adult survival in the willow tit was high and fairly stable and was positively correlated with recruitment. Adult survival has been the most influential vital rate to the population growth rate. Local recruitment and immigration have high variation, inducing variation in the population growth rate. Female willow tits use extrapair copulations to maximise offspring heterozygosity. Heterozygous individuals are supposedly of higher quality than homozygous ones. I found weak negative association between individual homozygosity and recruitment probability. The flying squirrel populations have declined during the past ten years. Furthermore, adult survival has declined in one of the populations, most likely due to habitat loss and fragmentation that decrease the adult survival and limit dispersal. The flying squirrel populations were studied in western Finland. The flying squirrel densities in the studied areas are the highest in Finland and therefore these areas have been regarded as favourable for the flying squirrel. My results question this view. Microsatellite analyses strengthen the view of populations doing poorly, because the heterozygosities in all the populations and particularly in the most isolated one were rather low. High FST values indicate low dispersal even between adjacent populations. Following work should investigate the spatial variation in individual performance and the dispersal processes in these populations. For the flying squirrel it is vital to determine the size and quality of the patches that can support flying squirrels and the ones that apparently can not. Present estimates of survival and genetic diversity can be used to reconstruct a meaningful PVA and projections for these populations.

Abstract:
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women and represents a serious health problem around the world. Despite of the progression in cancer research, there is a few biomarker validated to be used in clinical routine. Thus, this work aimed to investigate the levels of four serum proteins related with the mostly earlier events of breast cancer. For this purpose, serum levels of EGFR1, HER-2, TSP-1 and RANKL were investigated in twenty-eight patients with breast cancer in the early and advanced stage by ELISA method. Nineteen volunteers with no breast cancer were included in this study as controls. The results showed that serum EGFR1 (sEGFR1) levels decrease with disease progression. The mean sEGFR1 concentration in control group was 61.7 ng/mL, 38.0 ng/mL in initial breast cancer and 34.2 ng/mL in metastatic breast cancer. The best cutoff value was 46.85 ng/mL, it was able to distinguish volunteers and breast cancer patients with 75% sensitivity, and 94.7% specificity. Regarding sHER-2, its levels were found to increase with disease progression. Serum HER-2 (sHER-2) median in control group was 5.13 ng/mL, and in initial breast, and metastatic breast cancer women the mean was 5.99 ng/mL and 6.18 ng/mL, respectively. A cutoff value of 5.38 ng/mL of HER-2 was able to distinguish healthy and breast cancer individuals with 81.5% of sensitivity and 78.9% of specificity. Regarding TSP-1, women with metastatic breast cancer had significantly lower levels than control group and initial breast cancer. Besides although initial patients tend to have a higher concentration than control group, no statistical difference was observed. Concerning serum RANKL no differences was observed between the groups. In conclusion, our results bring evidence that sEGFR1 and sHER-2 should be investigated in a large clinical trial in an attempt to validate these proteins as potentials biomarkers for earlier detection of breast cancer.
