Abstract:
This study proposes the investigation on how Marques Rebelo is inscribed in the carioca urban narrative, and the survey on how he is related to the general lines of the Modernist movement of the 1930s. The historical frame of reference of the 1930s in the world, in Brazil and in Rio de Janeiro was carried out In order to situate the said movement. The often mentioned rescue of the literary tradition in the novel of the 30s was studied in the dialogue that the author develops with Manuel Antônio de Almeida, João do Rio and Lima Barreto. Marques Rebelos novels were also studied through their comparison with the novel Salgueiro, written by the contemporary author Lúcio Cardoso. By prioritizing the novels Marafa and A estrela sobe, by Marques Rebelo, this research work was directed to several objectives, among which was the examination of the presence of the most meaningful trends of the novel of the 30s in the authors production, and the search of the traits that shaped the tradition of the carioca urban narrative.

Mahlaka, M. M. "Marara : Patlisiso ya diteng le Poloto." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/26378.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyses the novelette Marara, written by D.P. Semakaleng Monyaise. This work has been previously investigated by critics such as Mogajane, Malope and Mogapi, who focused on its content and style and compared it to other literary works. This dissertation differs from these earlier studies in that it aims to analyse the structure of the text of Marara in depth, focussing on the two levels of structure, namely content and plot. This investigation uses two methods of analysis, namely definition and interpretation, because these approaches will adequately explore the many concepts and ideas related to the analysis of text structure. These methods are applied within the framework of an adapted narratological model. This model suggests that when the content of a text is studied, the concept of the topic should be strongly emphasised; when the plot is investigated the theme should be focussed on; and lastly when the style is examined, then atmosphere is most important. In examining the text of Marara three important concepts related to the novelette are identified, which describe three sub-genres of narratives, namely picaresque, didactic and moral. Picaresque means concerned with a character called picaro, who often embarks on long journeys consisting of sequences of different events and meetings with various characters. This picaro is an ordinary person, not of high social status. His/her weaknesses belittle him/her but he/she is changed by them and so is forgiven. In Marara the protagonist, Rremogolo, is on a journey from his home in Matile, where there is righteousness, to Makgoeng, a place of wickedness. After encountering many problems on the way he realises that he was mistaken to leave his home. He returns to Matile, convinced that it is the best place for him to live. This mistaken journey of temptation can be described as the Makgoeng Motif. Didactic means related to a work designed for institutions of education. Such a work can use as an example the story of a character, either an ordinary person or a person of high social status, who falls because of his/her weaknesses, but then changes and is forgiven. Rremogolo also fits into the didactic frame. Though he is a poor man of low social station, he successfully illustrates the point of the Makgoeng Motif through his fall, which is his failure to achieve financial success in Makgoeng. The moral means concerned with the power of distinguishing right from wrong. The emphasis of moral texts is on good behaviour, on people working and living together co-operatively. This concept can also be related to the plot structure described above, of a person either of high or ordinary social status, who through his/her weaknesses falls, but then changes and is forgiven. When the morality of this story is examined, emphasis is put on the changing of the character, on how the character first does bad things but in the passing of time, and because of the problems he/she encounters, in the end learns his/her mistake, and changes to become a good person. Rremogolo illustrates this exactly, because he begins by abandoning his uncle’s cattle in order to pursue his dream of travelling to Makgoeng, then suffers the results of many problems, realises his mistake, and in the end returns to home and duty. Therefore, careful examination of the text of Marara reveals that in writing this novelette Monyaise mixes three sub-generic categories, namely the picaresque, the didactic and the moral narrative. This makes the novelette difficult to classify, because it is difficult for readers to keep track of generic characteristics in this mix of genres.

In a preliminary, unreplicated test, cotton was planted in 40 inch and 27 inch rows on April 10 and again on May 1. Narrow rows outyielded 40 inch rows at both planting dates. The yield difference between the row spacing treatments was greatest in the May 1 planting. Both row spacings had higher yields when planted on the later date, as did both the DPL 90 and ST506 varieties used in the test.

Abstract:
The rising demand for powerful oncolytic virotherapy agents has led to the identification of Maraba virus, one of the most potent oncolytic viruses from Rhabdoviridae family which displays high selectivity for killing malignant cells and low cytotoxicity in normal cells. Although the virus is readied to be used for clinical trials, the interactions between the virus and the host cells is still unclear. Using a newly developed interferon-sensitive mutant Maraba virus (MG1), we have identified two key regulators of global translation (4E-BP1 and eIF2α) responsible for the inhibition of protein synthesis in the infected cells. Despite the translational arrest upon viral stress, we showed an up-regulation of anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL protein that provides a survival benefit for the host cell, yet facilitates effective viral propagation. Given the fact that eIF5B canonically regulates 60S ribosome subunit end joining, and is able to replace the role of eIF2 in delivering initiator tRNA to the 40S ribosome subunit upon the phosphorylation of eIF2α, we have tested whether eIF5B mediates the translation of target mRNAs during MG1 infection. Our results show that the inhibition of eIF5B significantly down-regulates the level of Bcl-xL steady-state mRNA, thus indirectly attenuates viral propagation.

Abstract:
The study of shrinkage – swelling mechanisms of soils in the Marais de Rochefort and Marais Poitevin is based on a mineralogical and structural characterisation and on a multi-scale approach of the relations between structural and hydromechanical properties. Illite, kaolinite, chlorite and illite / smectite mixed layer constitute the dominant clay minerals in the sediment. This composition is stable in spite of a discreet illitisation observed in soils and palaeosol. The gravimetric water profiles evolve from the shrinkage limit in surface to the liquidity limit at 3 meters deep. A preliminary shrinkage model was established on the relation between the water content profiles and the shrinkage curve. The in situ investigations based on the cone resistance and resistivity measurements allow to show the soil behaviour laws in two crossed diagrams : void ratio (e) – gravimetric water content (W) – cone resistance (Qd) – saturation index (Sat) and e – W -  - Qd. The Archie’s low was calibrated in this mineralogicaly homogeneous soil saturated with variable salinity water. The relation between hydraulic conductivity and microstructure was comprehended using image analyses and œdometer tests on intact samples. In situ, the electrical resistivity imaging shows the sediment structure down to the substratum. Three levels are superimposed: (1) the superior bri in solid state, crosscut by the prism – like structure, (2) the inferior bri, plastic to liquid, with high porosity and (3) deeper bri densified with depth. Thus the hydraulic transfers are mainly governed by the porosity of the plastic-to-liquid bri level

Abstract:
One-irrigation barleys were bred to be grown with only a single irrigation near planting time. To further our understanding of how to manage these new cultivars, two one - irrigation barley genotypes (Seco and 2 -22 -9) were grown at four seeding rates (20, 40, 60, and 80 lbs seed /A); four nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100, and 150 lbs N /A); two phosphorus rates (0 and 100 lbs P₂O₅ /A); four row spacings (6, 12, 18, and 24 inch); and three planting dates (Nov 19, Dec. 23, and Jan. 22). The optimum seeding rate, fertilizer rate, and row spacing were dependent on genotype and planting date. The optimum seeding rate was 40 to 60 lbs /A for Seco and 80 lbs /A for 2 -22 -9. An increase in seeding rate decreased kernel weight and kernel number per head but increased head number. A positive response to nitrogen fertilizer was not obtained due to the high levels of residual soil nitrogen at planting (20 ppm NO₃⁻N) except for the case of Seco at the Dec. 23 planting date. Phosphorus fertilizer increased yield only at the Nov. 19 planting date and if accompanied by 100 lbs N /A. Soil phosphorous levels were 2 ppm PO₄⁻P and a positive response was expected Kernel weight was not influenced by Nor P fertilizer. Kernel number per head increased with certain combinations of genotype and planting date. Head number decreased with N rate but increased with phosphorus. The optimum row spacing was 18 inches at the Nov. 19 planting and 12 inches for Seco at the Jan. 22 planting date. At other combinations of genotype and planting date, no differences in grain yield were detected due to row spacing. Kernel weight increased with row spacing at the Nov. 19 planting date; kernel number per head was generally not affected and, head number decreased with row spacing. The results of this study surest that any recommendations on how to grow one - irrigation barley are gross approximations because of variations due to year, planting date, and genotype.

The State of Pará and Belém occupy the tenth and sixth position between the Federative Units and the Brazilian capitals, respectively, in the detection rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV infection has grown a mong young adolescents, even th ough the government media campaigns for HIV preventio n. From the year 1980 to the year 2013, the Northern Region presented a 111% increase in the detection rate among subjects aged 15 to 24 years. With the objective of designing more effective and timely health education campaigns against HIV infection in yo ung adolescents in the city of Belém, in this work I was PROPOSED in the foreground to outline the epidemiological profile for HIV infection or A cquired Immunodeficiency S yndrome (AIDS) among adolescents between the ages of 15 and 24 years for each of the administrative district of Belém, and secondly to evaluate the knowledge about HIV / AIDS among high school students of state schools in these administrative regions. The survey of the epidemiological profile will be done at the Center for Testing and Coun seling (CTA) of the Municipal Health Department of Belém (SESMA) using questionnaires filled by users, aged 15 to 24 years, whose tests were positive for HIV in the period between 2010 and 2015. The data were grouped by location of the user's residence. In order to assess the level of knowledge about HIV/A ids in high school students, semi - structured questionnaires with closed questions were used where the student has options to agree to the question, do not agree or mark "I do not know". It is hoped that th e results provided by this study will provide further subsidies to public health policies to combat HIV/ A ids . We hope that our findings will be sources for further studies and that they alert us to effective action in the fight against HIV in public school students by municipal, state and even federal agencies.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to determine whether the properties of four soils of the Silverbell Desert Biome could be attributed solely to the parent material or alternately reflect the nature of contributions, if any, from eolian dust. The Anklam, Lajitas and Chimenea soils, classified as fine-loamy, mixed, thermic Lithic Haplargids and the Greyeagle (coarse-loamy, mixed, thermic, Lithic Torriorthent) soil formed an andesite, basalt, granite and basalt, respectively. They occur on gently sloping, stable terrain in Pima County, Arizona. The four soils were studied through field descriptions, particle size analysis, mineralogical analyses of light and heavy sand fractions and clay mineral identification. The light mineral fraction of all four soils is directly affected by the parent material and is influenced much less, if at all by eolian activities due to the larger particle sizes. It is concluded that the genesis of soils was influenced by both the underlying rock and the input of eolian particulates. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)

Five varieties of durum wheat were evaluated at two different seeding rates, in cooperation with Pacheco Farm Management in Marana. Significant differences between varieties were observed in grain yield, plant height, lodging, bushel weight and protein level. No significant differences in yellow berry were observed between the varieties. The planting rates did not cause significant differences in grain yield nor in any of the other characteristics that were measured. There were no significant variety x planting rate interactions.

Abstract: The aim of this research is to show the possibilities of expression of the scenic body in the process of the Marabá character¿s construction, based on the experimental approach of Contact, Energy Technique and Improvisation. This research was inspired by Gonçalves Dias¿ poem Marabá, which resulted in the homonymous performance. It tries to portray scenically the experimental attempt of the junction, re-definition and reflection of the techniques mentioned above. Due to the experimental laboritories and the literature on which this study is based, a line of work was carried out for the construction of the character, named ¿Scenic Dance¿. Such line of work showed that putting an end in the crystallized concept of beauty and going deeply into the act, the action and the creative manifestation can make easier the approach to the Sacred Body in the dance

Abstract:
For my honors thesis project, I launched a clothing line called Mandy Marapu that I had started during a backpacking trip to Indonesia many years ago. The two unique features of Mandy Marapu are 1) that each item is made from a unique sari, sarong or scarf from a far away exotic region of the world and 2) that the pieces are not just a clothing item but a clothing story. The main undertakings of this project were: a) the development of an EBay store, b) the design of an assortment grid, c) the devising of a marketing campaign, and d) the organization of fashion/trunk shows. But the project, which was also a business endeavor, did not meet financial goals. However, I was able to put into practice the knowledge and skills that I have learned in the classroom while at the University of Arizona and in my internship experiences during this same time. I also had the satisfaction of developing the self-confidence of three teenage girls who helped me to organize the fashion/trunk shows.

This work thinks the romance Marajó, written by Dalcídio Jurandir as a culture good in a after-colonial perspective, in the which is questioned and re-articulated the hegemonic speeches and those ones that become the modernity.homogeneous. I consider, in this manner, to defend the idea that, to the similarity of the archipelago of Marajó, the romance homonym of Dalcídio Jurandir can say us that under the apparent homogeneity of the region it is the ambivalent and the heterogeneous, and that this narrative redefine, therefore, the symbolic process and the social imaginary on the Amazonian that, traditionally, have constituted the image of this region. For in such a way, I demonstrate how is forged a new cultural sign from the representation of a space that oscillates between document and fiction, as well as from the representation of a citizen in bordering and ambivalent condition and of a writing that makes itself fragmentary and double. The theoretical frecital of this study consists, over all, in backgrounds about the construction of established represent a nation and create a cultural identity, mainly, by Timothi Brennan, Homi Bhabha and Stuart Hall, as well as, in the idea of dissimulation and supplement inferred of the studies of Barthes and Jacques Derrida; in the contributions of Deleuze and Guatarri, Donaldo Schuller, Finazzi-Agro,Garcia Canclini, Costa Lima, Angel Rama, amongst other, to think the condition of the citizen and the construction of the space about the Dalcídio”s narrative, and, still, in the analytical contributions of researchers of the Dalcídio‟s work as Assmar, Vicente Salles, Marli Tereza Furtado, Castilo, dentre many other.

Abstract:
Based on consumptive use, the last irrigation in wheat may be applied by the soft dough stage on the average sandy loam soil without loss of yield or shriveled grain. In two of the three locations reported here, this was the case although one of the soils was a clay loam. At the Buckeye location, applying the last irrigation at the soft dough stage resulted in a yield loss of 406 lbs /acre, but this yield loss was not statistically significant at conventional probability levels. Nevertheless, terminating irrigation at the soft dough stage is somewhat risky, and a less risky time to terminate irrigations may be between soft dough and hard dough for a sandy loam soil. The problem with this generalized recommendation is that neither soft dough nor hard dough are well -defined crop growth stages and sandy loam soils may vary greatly in their water -holding capacity. Also, it may be profitable to apply a final irrigation to carry late, green tillers to maturity. Assuming a water cost of $15 per irrigation and a grain value of $8 /cwt, a yield increase of 190 lbs /acre would pay for a final irrigation. Therefore, if water is inexpensive, terminating wheat irrigations unnecessarily early is not worth the risk of decreased revenue. Once the heads have turned color from green to brown, the crop has reached maturity and additional irrigations at this time will not affect yield even if other parts of the plant are green.

PIX was applied to cotton in 10 and 20 gallons of water to evaluate the effect of dilution rate on plant growth regulation. No statistical differences were seen at the one pint rate, but the trends looked like the higher rate of water increased the plant growth regulation (i.e., decreased plant height and increased yield). Increasing the rate of PIX to 2 pints in 20 gallons of water, to maintain the same concentration as 1 pint in 10 gallons of water, was detrimental to the yields.

Abstract:
Cotton growers in Pima County, Arizona are working together to implement a community-wide Integrated Pest Management program. Participation is voluntary; and is unanimous in at least some components of the program. The IPM program employs many control components aimed at the pink bollworm, the principle cotton insect pest in the area. Growers time the deployment of the control components to act in unison throughout the community. Insecticide applications in the area have trended downward since the program began in 1991, indicating that we are making progress toward our goal of reducing the reliance on pesticides.

Abstract:
Despite the critical role educators play in the lives of students, little research has been conducted on their perceptions of digital media, bullying behaviors and prevention, and the development of disciplinary policy. As educators are tasked with monitoring student behaviors both inside and outside the classroom, how they conceptualize student behavior emerges as a site for possible mediations in the culture of bullying that permeates 21st century schooling. The purpose of this study was to examine how teachers understand digital life, how they represent themselves within the culture of social media, and the effects those perceptions have on the enforcement of or dismantling of bullying as a social institution. The results of this study show that educators are less adept at negotiating digital life and are largely unaware of the impactful nature of online relationships. While bullying has distinct social drawbacks including the maintenance of a horizontally hostile culture, the social benefits of bullying are proposed as emergent sites of intervention. As educators are ever more faced with issues of disciplinary conduct, they have developed a chosen ignorance to justify their lack of knowledge about online and offline bullying cultures. The perception that bullying is an insurmountable issue is a common perception among educators in this sample however this research suggests that through recognizing the function of bullying educators and administrators alike can develop deterrent policies that work outside the abstinence-based models for bullying prevention and recuperative-based models for soothing victims.

Abstract:
A forest type dominated by Peltogyne gracilipes Ducke (Caesalpiniaceae) occurs on Maraca Island on a range of soil types. Maraca is located in Roraima State (Brazil) in the Rio Uraricoera and has an area of about 100,000 ha. This study compares the structure and floristic composition of the Peltogyne forest with the most widespread lowland forest type on Maraca and investigates some factors that could be involved in the persistent monodominance of Peltogyne. Three 0.25 ha plots were set up in each of three forest types: Peltogyne-rich forest (PRF), Peltogyne-poor forest (PPF) and forest without Peltogyne (FWP). Within each plot all trees (~ 10 cm dbh) were recorded. Seedlings and saplings were sampled in sub-plots of 2 m x 1 m (seedlings) and 4 m x 4 m (saplings). In the PPF and FWP, Sapotaceae were the most important family with the highest dominance and relative density values. Caesalpiniaceae showed high values in the PRF and PPF. Licania kunthiana, Pradosia surinamensis and Simarouba amara occurred in the forest types. Peltogyne dominated had 20% of stems and 53% of the trees ~ 10 cm dbh, and 91% of the canopy layer the canopy in total basal stems and 97% in all the the PRF and area of all of the total basal area of individuals > 50 cm dbh. In PPF, Lecythis corrugata and Tetragastris panamensis were the most abundant species, followed by Peltogyne. In the FWP the most abundant trees (~ 10 cm dbh) were L. kunthiana and P. surinamensis. In general, Peltogyne had low rates of seed predation and herbivory, but suffered locally high levels of damage to its seeds by leaf-cutter ants and was once observed to have an infestation of larvae of the moth Eulepidotis phrygionia on its young leaves. Peltogyne had no allelopathic effects on tested species and had VA mycorrhizal associations. Its occurrence remains unexplained but is most clearly correlated with soil magnesium.

Abstract:

The insertion of the Principle of Efficiency in the Federal Constitution by Constitutional Amendment No. 19/1998, became a legal requirement for efficiency in public administration in Brazil, which became a model for formally oriented management. This research aims to identify, through the use of free evocations technical, social representations of the management of the Instituto Federal do Maranh?o ? Campi S?o Lu?s - Maracan? and Cod? about efficiency in the management of public schools of the Federal Network. The research was conducted among a universe of 73 (seventy-three) of these managers Campi. The theoretical framework on which this research was supported was Social Representation Theory, of Serge Moscovici, and its complementary approach, the Central Nucleus Theory, developed by Jean-Claude Abric. The free evocations were analyzed by the technique of frame construction of four houses, after using the software EVOC 2003 ?, which sued the combination of the frequency of recall of each word and its order of evocation. The results of this research show how the core elements of social representations of managers, the words: commitment, accountability, transparency and ethics. The word dedication represented the first periphery. The words training, commitment, planning, organization and quality formed the third quadrant, where are the contrasting elements of representation. And the words: agility, punctuality and respect formed the Periphery Second of the representation. Through this research, it was also possible to identify the profile of managers and their opinions on various aspects related to the efficient management of public education.
Campi S?o Lu?s ?

Abstract:
WestBred 881 durum commands a premium price due to its superior quality, but it produces a lower yield than other commonly grown cultivars. This study was initiated to improve our understanding of how to grow WestBred 881. Two dumm cultivars (WestBred 881 and Aldura) were planted at five seeding rates (30, 60, 120, 180, and 240 lbs seed /A) and five row spacings (3, 6, 12, 18 an 24 inches) at the Marana Agricultural Center. The optimum seeding rate was 180 lbs /A for WestBred 881 and 120 lb /A for Aldura. An increase in seeding rate resulted in decreased kernel weight and number and increased head number. At row spacings of 3, 6 and 12 inches, grain yield of WestBred 881 was 6120, 6300, and 6060 lbs /A and grain yield of Aldura was 6350, 6770, and 7190 lb /A, respectively. WestBred 881 has larger kernels than Aldura but fewer kernels per head and heads per unit area. The yield advantage of WestBred 881 relative to Aldura at higher seeding rates was due to in kernels per head. At the closer row spacings, the advantage was due to kernel weight, kernels per head and heads per unit area.

Seeding rates 01 40 to 60 lbs seed/A resulted in the highest yields at the Dec. 15 planting date, comparing all planting dates combined. However, in individual analyses of the Nov. 17 and Jan. 22 planting dates, no significant differences in yield due to seeding rate were detected. Grain yield increased linearly with nitrogen rate at the Nov. 17 planting date, but was not influenced by nitrogen rate at the other planting dates. Yields were similar for the Nov. 17 and Dec. 15 planting dates, but decreased considerably in the Jan. 22 planting date due partially to lower head number. Grain yields of 2-22-9 were consistently higher than Seco this year.

Abstract:
A field study was conducted in 2000 at the University of Arizona Marana Agricultural Center (1,974 ft. elevation) to evaluate the effects of three planting dates on yield and crop development of 13 varieties of upland cotton. Planting dates included 4 April, 21 April, and 9 May. The associated heat units accumulated since 1 January were 617, 877, and 1203 respectively (using 86/55 °F maximum/minimum thresholds respectively). Results indicate that there was a significant interaction between planting date and variety. Overall, lint yields significantly declined with later planting dates and significantly varied among varieties within each planting date.
