Abstract:
Brazil stands out for presenting the highest amphibian anuran diversity in the world. However, taxonomic studies that address characteristic of larval stage of anurans are incipient, representing only 62% of known species. We assess the species diversity of tadpoles from eastern Maranhão state, mid-northern region of Brazil based on morphological and molecular identification (i.e., 16S rRNA gene fragment), and we also provide characteristics of the habitats occupied by each species. We carried out 30 field samplings during 13 months in 16 environments along an ecotonal area, over five cities i

We report for the first time the snake Thamnodynastes almae Franco & Ferreira, 2002 in Piauí, northeastern Brazil. Our record is based on two specimens and comprises the 17th known locality for the species. The new record represents the northernmost and westernmost locality, at the limit between the Caatinga and the Maranhão Babaçu Forest ecoregions, and extends this species’ geographic distribution 495 km from Milagres, state of Ceará. Updated distribution maps and images of preserved specimens are provided.

AbstractMaranhão North Mesoregion has the highest demographic density of the state because where is located the capital, São Luís. The climate is humid or sub-humid tropical with rainfall rates around 1,000 mm / year, and suffering, this way, the mass influence of air. The coastal plain of Maranhão is subdivided into four geomorphological sectors: to the west-northwest coast, which is marked by State recesses, specifically maranhense Golfão; the east coast where dominate the fields of movable or fixed dunes; and the eltaic plain of the Parnaíba River. Abstract:
We present the first record of Aegolius harrisii (Cassin, 1849) from the state of Maranhão, extending the known distribution of the species 283 km to the west in the Brazilian Northeast. This record also represents the northernmost locality of the species within the Cerrado phytogeographic domain, which coincides with the ecotone between the Cerrado, Caatinga, and Amazon domains. Given the considerable gaps in the data on the occurrence of this owl in the Brazilian Northeast, we would recommend more surveys in specific areas with similar phytophysiognomies.

AbstractThe central mesoregion of Maranhão is composed of 42 cities located in the middle valley of the Mearim River and divided into three microregions. The region has a high density, however, concentrated in a rural zone where the practice of the subsistence agriculture is great. There are two types of climate considered: a sub-humid climate ofC2 type and dry sub-humid climate of C1 type. This work aimed to characterize the central region of Maranhão indemographic, economic and natural resources aspects. Abstract: Babassu-nuts are one of the most important socio-biodiversity products in Brazil. Detailed and reliable information on the babassu value chain is essential for local and regional public policies to support the economy associated with the extraction of this product and vulnerable social groups that depend on it for survival. This study presents a methodology to analyze the babassu value chain and discusses results obtained in 2021 from the application of this methodology in Vale do Mearim, Maranhão, the region with the highest babassu production in the country.
