Traces of extraction in Delian marble quarries attest their exploitation during Antiquity. A preliminary non-destructive provenance study confirmed the presence of indigenous marble in Delos constructions. In contrast, Delos marble quarries have not been geochemically described so far. Sixteen Hellenistic stelae from the central and upper Adriatic region have been examined minero-petrographically and isotopically in order to determine the provenance of their constituent materials. The Chavanon metamorphic sequence, located in the center of the French Massif Central, mainly constituted of gneisses and micaschists, contains some marbles lenses which have been exploited since the first half of the 19th century, maybe even earlier. Those rocks, mainly constituted of calcite, occur as hectometric lenses within gneisses. The successive exploitation have taken place both from as surface quarries and underground works.
