Contemporary society can be characterized, among other aspects, by its transmutation, speed and excess, being deconstructed and reconstructed all the time. It is also in this scenario that many concepts or conceptual notions from several areas are challenged. In Architecture but not limited to it attempts to theorize about the attributes related to the idea of places are recurrent as well as its potential implications for human relations. According to the French anthropologist Marc Augé, places can be defined as identitarian, relational and historical: if one of these attributes is weakened, non-places are configured. In order to encompass the nature of this phenomenon and to understand how the versatility of the contemporary world collaborates to the production and reproduction of non-places, is resorted here, an inter, trans and multidisciplinary approach: Geography, Anthropology, History, Psychology, Architecture and Cinema are summed up in order to create an investigative and scientific panorama academically legitimate. For this purpose, instead of opting for a simple architectural design analysis what would be more expected is assumed, in conformity with the plurality of contemporary metropolis itself, a polyhedric focus and a more essayistic feature.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the most dynamically evolving Prague district Karlin. In the context of the theory of Marc Augé about non-places, it primarily addresses the transformation of Karlin after the floods in 2002 and its consequences. For easier orientation in this area it is at first outlined the theory of Marc Augé and the history of Karlin. It is followed by the practical part, which refers to the production of non- places. Against the backdrop of the industrial heritage it refers to the conversion of industrial buildings and the creation of new administrative centers that show signs of non-places. Construction of new office centers started the process of new development of Karlin. The nature of this process and the direction Karlin is moving , is presented with concrete examples. I note in particular the changes in the structure of newly opened businesses - shops and catering facilities . In the last part of the thesis I mention the typical expression of non-place in Karlin - the underground and its surroundings. The aim is to point out that the conversion of Karlin relates to the production of non- places. Keywords : conversion, industrial buildings, Karlin, Marc Augé, non-places, office buildings, office centers, underground.

The paper Monte, um primeiro habitar: a construção de um lugar (Monte, a primal dwelling : the construction of a place) is both a theoretical and practical work, developed during the Master in Multimedia Art –Audiovisuals of the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, that focuses on the concept of place. It aims to assess the link between building and dwelling, and it does so by the construction of a place and analysing its image and time dimensions. This thought emerged out of a artistc project (the vídeo Monte, um primeiro habitar) which directs the theoretical discussion of this dissertation. The theoretical section seeks not only to highlight the content related plurality of the concept of place, but also to actively employ this complexity in order to build what I call my place. In order to do so, the necessary dimensions of my place, ie, image, earth and time, are examined in light of scholars such as Gaston Bachelard, Martin Heidegger and Mircea Eliade. These dimensions are also tackled by the work of artists like Alberto Carneiro, Maya Deren, David Claerbout and Andrei Tarkovsky. The practical section is developed through the video Monte, a primal dwelling, composed by three non-linear sequences, which operates the practical construction of the previously developed concept of place (image-time place). This project which, in a theoretical and practical synergy, begun with just the search of my place, ended up discovering an ancestral, primal place, which we inhabit collectively through the archetype of our belonging to the world

Abstract:
Taking into account the presence of Visual Arts teachers willing to keep simultaneously their artistic activity, this research sought to systematize the consequences of joining two different areas with specific characteristics, such as the arts and education. Through literature review about the artist- teacher, we attempt to realize its condition and different representations, aiming to learn the strengths and vulnerabilities of his performance, as well as ways of involving artists-teachers with their dual activities. Thereby, we started being interested about the artist - teacher place in Visual Art Education in our portuguese context. To this end, we have attended qualitative methodologies and developed comprehensive interviews that examine the personal narratives of twelve artists - teachers from Escola Artística António Arroio, in Lisbon. The results were obtained through descriptive, typological and interpretative analysis of the acquired data, which together present a systematization of references we believe may be useful for art teacher training and art teacher development. The artist-teacher's place is analyzed according to notions of expanded field, topographical place and anthropological place all along the three parts that constitute the structure of the study which follow the dynamic lines suggested by Deleuze and Guattari, namely, Territorialização, Reterritorialização and Desterritorialização. Starting from Marc Augé, we propose, finally, hypotheses of identity place, relational place and historical place to fleeting and transitory non-places. Recognizing that those places are often non perceived, the school institution should better clarify what is intended for itself and their actors, including the promotion of uniformed individuals or the valorization of difference. The art place, and specifically, the artist - teacher place(s) varies, inevitably, according to those determinations.

Abstract:
Tese de mestrado, Arte Multimédia - Audiovisuais, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas Artes, 2013
This essay addresses the relationship between a public place and its occupation by homeless converting it into a personal place. Drawing on Martin Heidegger, Marc Augé, Ignasi de Sola-Morales, Italo Calvino and Maria Manuela Dias Fernandes a conceptual universe was built tha was complemented and deepened by reflecting on some of the works of the artists Enrique jezik, Hans Op de Beeck, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Andreas Gursky, David Plowden, Thomas Struth, Ana Vieira, Noé Sendas, Antonio Dias, Adrian Paci, Alexander Star, Grabriel Orozco, Liu Bolin, Santiago Sierra, Steven Spielberg. It’s explored how the public place retains the memory of those who use it daily through the concepts of anthropological place, non-place and 'terrain-vague'. Then the construction of the dwelling place as well as their relationship with the concept of shelter is explored, which serves as an introduction to the study of the paradigm of homeless. This reflection resulted in two unique pieces of character art that explore the studied problematic through the reconstruction of local ambiguities and fleeting hints of occupations

Abstract:

Abstract:
‘Selves at Risk: Reading Susan Suleiman with Marc Augé, La Vie en double’, written by Tom Conley, elaborates speculative answers to the question of what makes writing, and particularly certain forms of self-writing, possible. In his essay, Conley places Suleiman’s work in dialogue with the personal writings of ethnographer Marc Augé. Diving deeply into the thick of the material to excavate a hybrid concept of self-representation, he moves deftly between the literary critic and the ethnographer, ultimately suggesting that the shared ‘existential tenor’ of the two bodies of work cannot be happenstance, but rather the result of a shared impulse to perform an ‘ethnology of the self’ through writing.

Abstract:
The introduction commences with a ‘detour’ into the history of landscape art and the picturesque, suggesting ways that this mode pre-empted what may seem like more modern ideas about the interference between perception and representation. This discussion is folded into a brief account of the so-called ‘spatial turn’ and the interventions of theorists including Doreen Massey and Marc Augé, establishing an immediate context for the work of Keiller, Sebald, and Sinclair. Suggesting a twin heritage of the ‘English Journey’ on the one hand and the French Surrealists and Situationists on the other, the introduction then offers the tension between amant and amateur as a way of characterizing the balance of exotic/everyday, plan/coincidence, and high-brow/low-brow in these figures’ work. It considers the role of pedestrianism and melancholia before closing with a discussion of Walter Benjamin and Gustave Doré’s ‘New Zealander’.

Abstract:
The Introduction sets out the terrain of the book by signifying a key historical turning point in postwar France (and the West more generally): the spatial crisis of globalized capitalism. The effects of this crisis are felt as once familiar, local environments are increasingly de-localized and made porous to global trends and planetary preoccupations. The chapter proposes an initial synthesis of key notions from important thinkers of postmodernity and globalization—including Paul Virilio, Marc Augé, Peter Sloterdijk, and Bruno Latour —in order to develop the parameters of this crisis, which notably entails the destabilizing of senses of place, identity, and belonging. It makes the claim that such preoccupations constitute a fundamental underlying impetus for the contemporary French novel, illustrating this with a brief reading of Jean Rolin’s Les événements [The Events] (2015). Finally, it presents overviews of each chapter, introducing the corpus of eight novels that will be the subject of the book: novels by Michel Houellebecq, Chloé Delaume, Lydie Salvayre, Jean-Philippe Toussaint, Virginie Despentes, Philippe Vasset, Jean Rolin, and Marie Darrieussecq.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We analyze solar events associated with flares: gradual — M3.7 on March 7, 2011 and impulsive — X6.9 on August 9, 2011.These flares were accompanied by hard X-ray (HXR), microwave (MW) and > 100 MeV gamma radiation, fast coronalmass ejection (CME). Estimates of the magnitude and duration of acceleration for CME were obtained from the conditionof stitching the assumed uniformly accelerated motion and the observed uniform motion. These estimates indicate that theCME should have been accelerated significantly longer than the estimated minimum time, at least more than 30 min. Theobtained mean values and duration of CME acceleration do not contradict CME acceleration in two phases— impulsive andprolong. The largest bursts of HXR and MW radiation were observed both during the CME impulsive acceleration (X6.9flare on August 9, 2011), and after it (M3.7 flare on March 7, 2011). This shows that the acceleration processes of chargedparticles in flares do not depend on the magnitude of the CME acceleration. The average CME velocity deduced from theSOHO/LASCO observations at 20R ⊙ in the high corona 2034 km/s on March 7, 2011 and 1506 km/s on August 9, 2011suggests that a residual decelerating force acting on CME on August 9, 2011 was larger.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Pueden aparecer alucinaciones visuales, delirios, desorientación, labilidad emocional, estupor, temblores, sudoración, hipertensión, taquicardia, agitación psicomotriz, pudiendo llegar a a presentar convulsiones. Abstract:
As a student undertaking a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC)1 based in a GP practice in a rural community in the North of Scotland, I have been lucky to be given responsibility and my own clinic lists. Every day I conduct consultations that change my practice: the challenge of clinically applying the theory I have studied, controlling a consultation and efficiently exploring a patient's problems, empathising with and empowering them to play a part in their own care2 – and most difficult I feel – dealing with the vast amount of uncertainty that medicine, and particularly primary care, presents to both clinician and patient. I initially consulted with a lady in her 60s who attended with her husband, complaining of severe lower back pain who was very difficult to assess due to her pain level. Her husband was understandably concerned about the degree of pain she was in. After assessment and discussion with one of the GPs, we agreed some pain relief and a physio assessment in the next few days would be a practical plan. The patient had one red flag, some leg weakness and numbness, which was her ‘normal’ on account of her multiple sclerosis. At the physio assessment a few days later, the physio felt things were worse and some urgent bloods were ordered, unfortunately finding raised cancer and inflammatory markers. A CT scan of the lung found widespread cancer, a later CT of the head after some developing some acute confusion found brain metastases, and a week and a half after presenting to me, the patient sadly died in hospital. While that was all impactful enough on me, it was the follow-up appointment with the husband who attended on the last triage slot of the evening two weeks later that I found completely altered my understanding of grief and the mourning of a loved one. The husband had asked to speak to a Andrew MacFarlane Year 3 ScotGEM Medical Student 2 doctor just to talk about what had happened to his wife. The GP decided that it would be better if he came into the practice - strictly he probably should have been consulted with over the phone due to coronavirus restrictions - but he was asked what he would prefer and he opted to come in. I sat in on the consultation, I had been helping with any examinations the triage doctor needed and I recognised that this was the husband of the lady I had seen a few weeks earlier. He came in and sat down, head lowered, hands fiddling with the zip on his jacket, trying to find what to say. The GP sat, turned so that they were opposite each other with no desk between them - I was seated off to the side, an onlooker, but acknowledged by the patient with a kind nod when he entered the room. The GP asked gently, “How are you doing?” and roughly 30 seconds passed (a long time in a conversation) before the patient spoke. “I just really miss her…” he whispered with great effort, “I don’t understand how this all happened.” Over the next 45 minutes, he spoke about his wife, how much pain she had been in, the rapid deterioration he witnessed, the cancer being found, and cruelly how she had passed away after he had gone home to get some rest after being by her bedside all day in the hospital. He talked about how they had met, how much he missed her, how empty the house felt without her, and asking himself and us how he was meant to move forward with his life. He had a lot of questions for us, and for himself. Had we missed anything – had he missed anything? The GP really just listened for almost the whole consultation, speaking to him gently, reassuring him that this wasn’t his or anyone’s fault. She stated that this was an awful time for him and that what he was feeling was entirely normal and something we will all universally go through. She emphasised that while it wasn’t helpful at the moment, that things would get better over time.3 He was really glad I was there – having shared a consultation with his wife and I – he thanked me emphatically even though I felt like I hadn’t really helped at all. After some tears, frequent moments of silence and a lot of questions, he left having gotten a lot off his chest. “You just have to listen to people, be there for them as they go through things, and answer their questions as best you can” urged my GP as we discussed the case when the patient left. Almost all family caregivers contact their GP with regards to grief and this consultation really made me realise how important an aspect of my practice it will be in the future.4 It has also made me reflect on the emphasis on undergraduate teaching around ‘breaking bad news’ to patients, but nothing taught about when patients are in the process of grieving further down the line.5 The skill Andrew MacFarlane Year 3 ScotGEM Medical Student 3 required to manage a grieving patient is not one limited to general practice. Patients may grieve the loss of function from acute trauma through to chronic illness in all specialties of medicine - in addition to ‘traditional’ grief from loss of family or friends.6 There wasn’t anything ‘medical’ in the consultation, but I came away from it with a real sense of purpose as to why this career is such a privilege. We look after patients so they can spend as much quality time as they are given with their loved ones, and their loved ones are the ones we care for after they are gone. We as doctors are the constant, and we have to meet patients with compassion at their most difficult times – because it is as much a part of the job as the knowledge and the science – and it is the part of us that patients will remember long after they leave our clinic room.
