Bloom, James D. Roth's Wars. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2022. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781978729100.

Full text
Abstract:
Treating Philip Roth as a war writer—as well as a sportswriter, crime reporter, political commentator, and Newark chronicler—Roth’s Wars: A Career in Conflict offers a thoroughly researched account of the novelist’s preoccupation with wars around the world and wars at home. This wide-ranging social and cultural history of Roth’s career examines intersections between Roth’s preoccupations as a writer and the work of contemporaries, such as J.D. Salinger, Joan Didion, George Plimpton, Hannah Arendt, E.L. Doctorow, Flannery O’Connor, Michael Herr, and Don DeLillo. The legends and icons who figure in this account of Roth’s career include Dwight Eisenhower, Meyer Lansky, Ernie Pyle, Bob Dylan, Johnny Appleseed, Anne Frank, JFK, Mickey Mantle, the Marx Brothers, Thomas Paine, Sandy Koufax, and Franz Kafka.

Abstract:
Hitler annexed Austria to Germany on March 15, 1938. Erwin Schrödinger, in Graz, soon regretted having applauded this and fled to Dublin. Stefan Meyer pre-emptively resigned his professorship in Vienna. Marietta Blau, discoverer of cosmic-ray disintegration “stars,” immigrated to Mexico. Polonium expert Elizabeth Rona immigrated to America. Renowned Lise Meitner escaped to Stockholm, where she received little scientific or personal support. Mussolini’s Fascist Italy adopted Nazi racial policies and enacted anti-Semitic laws in the fall of 1938. Bruno Rossi, dismissed from his professorship in Padua, immigrated with his wife to England and then to America. Emilio Segrè relinquished his professorship in Palermo and immigrated with his wife and young son to America. Enrico Fermi, his Jewish wife Laura, and their two children, went to Stockholm where he received the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics and then immigrated to America to begin what Laura Fermi called the process of Americanization.

Wald, Alan M. New York Intellectuals. University of North Carolina Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5149/northcarolina/9781469635941.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
For a generation, this book has stood as the authoritative account of an often misunderstood chapter in the history of a celebrated tradition among literary radicals in the United States that began in the Great Depression. Wald’s passionate investigation of over half a century of dissident Marxist thought, Jewish internationalism, fervent political activism, and the complex art of the literary imagination is enriched by more than one hundred personal interviews, unparalleled primary research, and critical interpretations of novels and short stories depicting the inner lives of committed writers and thinkers. Wald's commanding biographical portraits of rebel outsiders, some of whom founded Partisan Review, who mostly became insiders, often Cold War liberals and a few neoconservatives, retains its resonance today. Included is commentary on Max Eastman, Elliot Cohen, Lionel Trilling, Sidney Hook, Tess Slesinger, James Burnham, Meyer Schapiro, Dwight Macdonald, Philip Rahv, Mary McCarthy, James T. Farrell, Irving Kristol, Irving Howe, Hannah Arendt, and more. With a new preface by the author that tracks the rebounding influence of these intellectuals in the era of Occupy and Bernie Sanders, this anniversary edition shows that the trajectory and ideological ordeals of the New York intellectual Left still matters today.

Duerden, Rachel. Choreo-Musical Relationships in Mark Morris’s (2003). Edited by Yael Kaduri. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199841547.013.41.

Full text
Abstract:
Choreographer Mark Morris is generally regarded as a supremely musical choreographer, and his respect for the musical score and his preference for working very closely with it are well known. A close reading of his works leads one to examine the nature of the relationship between what is seen and what is heard in the context of art, and in relation to one’s embodied existence. In this study ofAll Fours(2003), choreographed to Bartok’sFourth String Quartet, structural comparative analysis allows for an examination of the temporal dimension of the relationship and changes in and through time—meter, pulse, rhythm, pitch and harmony, dynamic shaping, and instrumentation. Through this, layers of complexity in the choreomusical relationships are revealed that stimulate questions concerning the interface of aural and kinetic in art, and which reveal how Morris’s work resonates with a deeply affirmative and holistic philosophy of life.

Gray, Erik. Marriage. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198752974.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
Marital love is rarely represented by poets, at least in their lyric poetry. Lyric, with its brevity, its intensity, its ellipses, seems ideally suited to a particular type of passionate love typified by novelty, absence, uncertainty. Conjugal love, powerful though it may be, lacks these particular qualities. Yet if the pleasure and even purpose of marriage lies in discovering freedom and self-realization within strictly prescribed limits, then lyric could well be seen as the genre most suited to marital love. This chapter examines the tradition of marriage lyric that has developed, for the most part, in recent centuries, as the ideal of loving, companionate marriage has spread. Taking as its starting point the work of the Victorian poet and theorist Coventry Patmore, whose treatise on poetic meter illustrates the same ideals that mark his poems about marriage, the chapter ranges from Anne Bradstreet to Seamus Heaney and other contemporary poets of marital love.

Abstract:
Digital technologies are exerting a growing influence on the lives of children and teenagers: from video monitoring of babies and educational robots in nursery school to AI-powered learning assistants used to guarantee individual success in education. However, issues relating to privacy, surveillance and data protection are seldom reflected on with regard to this sensitive and important social sphere. The majority of these applications generate data which reveal a great deal about the adolescents who use them. This study addresses this subject area. Together with practitioners from the field of education and with the goal of laying the foundations for addressing this issue in both academic and (socio-) political discourse, it depicts interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary exchange that extends beyond disciplines and academic borders. The authors Regina Ammicht Quinn, Jutta Croll, Sephan Dreyer, Michael Freidewald, Elena Frense, Marit Hansen, Asmae Harrach-Lasfaghi, Jessica Heesen, Gerrit Hornung, Andreas Janson, Nicole Krämer-Mertens, Leonie Kreidel, Marco Leimeister, Yannic Meier, Judith Meinert, Maxi Nebel, Carsten Ochs, Dr. Senta Pfaff-Rüdiger, Alexander Roßnagel, Sofia Schöbel, Reinhold Schulze-Tammena, Matthias Söllner, Ingrid Stapf and Prof. Dr. Isabel Zorn.

MacDonald, Scott. Comprehending Cinema. Oxford University PressNew York, NY, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/9780197758755.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Comprehending Cinema: Panoramic Audiovisioning, the third book in Scott MacDonald's "Avant-Doc" trilogy (with Avant-Doc: Intersections of Documentary and Avant-Garde Cinema, 2015; and The Sublimity of Document: Cinema as Diorama, 2019) is a collection of 15 in-depth interviews and 3 essays. Central themes include modern uses of the cinematic archive and varieties of filmmaker collaboration. Interviewees include Su Friedrich, Guy Maddin and Evan and Galen Johnson, poet John Ashbery, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Jennifer West, Penny Lane, Dean Fleischer Camp, Daniel Lindsay/TJ Martin, Jennifer Anderson/Vernon Lott, Paul Cronin, Bill Morrison, Lucien Castaing-Taylor/Véréna Paravel, Erin Espelie, and Chloé Galibert-Laîné. Three panoramic essays function as entr'acts within the drama of filmmaker voices. In “Night Light: The Modern Cine-Nocturne,” MacDonald discusses a range of filmmakers who have brought the tradition of musical and painterly nocturne into modern cinema: Kenneth Anger, Peter Hutton, Barry Jenkins, Abbas Kiarostami, Rebecca Meyers, Mary Beth Reed, Phil Solomon, Chick Strand, and Laura Washington. In “Loznitsa X 4” MacDonald surveys the wide-ranging filmmaking of Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa, who has worked in four different cinematic modes: archival filmmaking, cinema-verité documentary, quiet meditation, and political horror film. “Recent Archival Engagements with ‘The War to End All Wars,’” explores responses to the anniversary of World War 1 by Bill Morrison, Yervant Gianikian/Angela Ricci Lucchi, and Peter Jackson. Comprehending Cinema concludes with an interview with the group that Roger Ebert called, “the best in the world at accompanying silent film”: the Alloy Orchestra (Terry Donahue, Roger Miller and Ken Winokur), at the conclusion of their 30-year run.
