Abstract:
This paper analyzes the work of actor/writer Marco Paolini, and his acclaimed monologue Il racconto del Vajont in particular. In the wake of Dario Fo and Franca Rame’s teatro civile, Paolini’s monologues contributed to the birth of the so-called teatro di narrazione in the 1990s, which can also be defined as “theatre of trauma”, that is, a theatre that recovers the memory of tragic events from the past. In recent times, trauma has become a central theme of Western narrative, politics, and other forms of representation in the public sphere. Following the thought of philosophers such as Jean-François Lyotard and Slavoj Zižek, the article reads Paolini’s Il racconto del Vajont as a significant example of what writer Kyo Maclear calls “witness art.” Characterized by a crisis of the traditional models of representation in mainstream culture, witness art is conceived by Maclear in opposition to the traditional divisions between art, knowledge, and the political instances of public discourse. Among Paolini’s many performances of Vaiont, the one performed at the same time and place where the tragedy took place 34 years before, and broadcasted live on RAI 2 in 1997, stands out for its uniqueness. That night, Paolini evoked the reenactment of a traumatic experience by its witnesses, and, on a wider scale, by the audience watching television at home. An almost forgotten tragedy became a media event, and for the first time trauma witnessing as such—and not as a means for a specific political claim—became part of the public discourse in the elaboration of post-1989 Italy.

Abstract:
Background:Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) is characterized by inflammation of large and medium arteries. Classic symptoms include headaches, malaise and, in severe cases, blindness and aortic aneurysms. Corticosteroids (CS) are the first line of treatment. Relapsing disease patients undergo multiple courses of CS therapy increasing their CS exposure and toxicity. A significant unmet need for disease-modifying CS-sparing therapy remains in GCA as the efficacy of current treatment options, including tocilizumab have limitations. We have previously reported elevated expression of granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) pathway transcriptomic signature in GCA vessels. GM-CSF may contribute to underlying disease mechanisms by regulating inflammatory macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs) and T helper (TH1/TH17) cells which are involved in GCA pathogenesis. GM-CSF produced by T cells1can promote polarization of inflammatory macrophages2and recruitment and differentiation of monocytes into inflammatory DCs2that can in turn recruit T cells and stimulate TH1/TH17 differentiation creating a feedback loop. GM-CSF may also exert direct effects on angiogenesis3and vessel wall remodeling4.Objectives:To demonstrate the contributing role of GM-CSF pathway to inflammation in GCA arteries. Methods:Immunostaining was used to examine expression of GM-CSF and GM-CSF-Rα proteins in temporal artery biopsies (TABs) from GCA and controls (patients with suspected but not confirmed GCA and a negative TAB). Costaining with cell markers such as CD31, CD3, and CD68 allowed visualization of cells expressing GM-CSF and GM-CSF-Rα. Expression of GM-CSF pathway molecules such as phospho-JAK2 and PU.1 proteins was detected by immunohistochemical staining of GCA and control TABs.Ex vivocultured GCA arteries treated (10 each) with mavrilimumab (anti-GM-CSF-Rα) or placebo for 5 days were assayed for gene expression by qPCR, and culture supernatants were analyzed by ELISA.Results:Endothelial cells and macrophages were the main cell types expressing GM-CSF and GM-CSF-Rα. Increased expression of phospho-JAK2 (activated signaling molecule) and nuclear-localized PU.1 (transcription factor) in GCA TABs compared to controls indicated the presence of active GM-CSF signaling pathway in GCA.Inhibition of PU.1 mRNA expression inex vivocultures of GCA arteries treated with mavrilimumab indicated blockade of GM-CSFR signaling pathway. Mavrilimumab induced decrease in mRNA expression of key cell type markers including DC and macrophage activation markers CD83 and HLA-DRA, monocyte markers CD14 and CD16, T cell marker CD3ε, and B cell marker CD20 in these GCA artery cultures. Expression of inflammatory TH1/TH17 factors IFNγ (mRNA), TNFα, CXCL10 (IFNγ-stimulated chemokine) and IL-6 (mRNA and protein) was also inhibited by mavrilimumab in GCA artery cultures. Conclusion:Increased GM-CSF, GM-CSF-Rα, and downstream pathway-associated protein levels in GCA biopsies were consistent with previously-observed increased transcriptome signature. Expression of genes associated with inflammatory cells was suppressed by mavrilimumab in cultured GCA arteries. These data implicate the GM-CSF pathway in GCA pathophysiology and increase confidence in rationale for targeting the GM-CSF pathway in GCA.References:[1]GM-CSF and T-cell responses: what we do and don’t know. Abstract:
Regular monitoring of hemipteran hopper species (including psyllids) associated with small-fruited acid lime trees (Citrus aurantifolia L.) was conducted for four years using motorized insect suction to determine the possible vectors of witches’- broom disease of lime (WBDL). The study was done in two phases: monitoring was done in Habra village, Wilayat Wadi AlMaawal (Batinah region) for one year from June 2000 to May 2001; then monitoring was done in Maharah village, Wilayat AlMusannah (Batinah region), for a period of three years from May 2001 to April 2004. Twelve species of cicadellid leafhoppers and one delpahacid planthopper species were collected, while no psyllids were found. Hishimonus phycitis (Distant) (Cicadellidae) was the most abundant hopper (78.4 % of collected individuals). Next in abundance were Toya sp. (Delphacidae), Circulifera haematiceps? and a deltocephalin leafhopper, respectively constituting 10.4, 3.8 and 2.4 % of the total catches of the four years. Nine other species made up 5% of the total collection: Exitianus nanus (Distant), Cicadulina sp. (either chinai (Ghauri) or storeyi (China)), Emposca distinguenda (Paoli), Amrasca biguttula (Ishihara), Deltocephalus (Recilia) pruthii (Metcalf), Neolimnus aegyptiacus (Mutsumura) and three undetermined species (one Deltocephalinae, one Typhlocybinae and one undeterminable to subfamily). Catches of H. phycitis were highest from November to March and lowest from May to September. There was a significant linear relationship between number of H. phycitis and maximum and mininmum temperature. Relative humidity was not significantly correlated to number of H. phycitis. In Maharah, young lime trees were free from WBDL but the disease incidence increased with age. H. phycitis is the best candidate vector of WBDL. The potential of Toya sp., Circulifera haematiceps? and an undetermined deltocephalin as candidate vectors is discussed. Finally, it is suggested that regular sprayings of acid lime trees with effective systemic insecticides during November to March each year can greatly reduce the vector population and can prevent or delay the spread of the disease to a great extent.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Prevention interventions for coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), are currently limited to non-pharmaceutical strategies. Observational and laboratory data suggested that hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) had biologic activity against SARS-CoV-2. A blinded trial of HCQ in persons with confirmed exposure and virologic and clinical endpoints is needed. Methods We conducted a national, householdrandomized, double-blind, controlled trial of HCQ post-exposure prophylaxis, with entirely remote study procedures. We enrolled close contacts exposed to persons with SARS-CoV-2 infection in the past 96 hours. Participants were randomized to either HCQ (400 mg daily for three days followed by 200 mg daily for eleven days) or ascorbic acid (500 mg followed by 250 mg daily), as a placebo-equivalent control. Participants self-collected mid-turbinate swabs daily (days 1–14) for SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing. The primary outcome was PCR-confirmed, incident SARS-CoV-2 infection among persons SARS-CoV-2 negative at enrollment. Symptoms were assessed using criteria from the US CDC. Results From March-August 2020, 623 households were randomized; 311 households (381 participants) to the HCQ group and 312 households (400 participants) to the control group. Ninety- one percent of participants were retained up to day 14 and 9,595 of 10,588 (91%) of swabs were tested. Among participants who were SARS-CoV-2 negative at baseline (n=626/781, 80%), the cumulative incidence of SARS-CoV-2 was 14.5% (95% CI: 11.6–17.4) and the cumulative incidence of COVID-19 symptoms was 11.6% (95% CI: 8.9–14.2) at day 14. By day 14, there was no difference between the HCQ group and control group in SARS-CoV-2 acquisition (46 vs. 43 events, aHR= 0.99, 95% CI 0.64–1.52, p=0.95) or symptomatic disease (40 vs. 32 events, aHR= 1.23, 95% CI: 0.76–1.99, p=0.40). The adverse event frequency was similar between groups (59 [15.5%] participants in the HCQ and 45 [11.3%] in the control group, p=0.092). Cumulative incidence of RT-PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection among close contacts of diagnosed cases, by study group Conclusion This randomized, double-blind, controlled trial among persons with recent exposure and high incidence of SAR-CoV2 provides strong evidence that HCQ post-exposure prophylaxis did not prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection or modify clinical disease. Abstract:
Reading the Transformation: The Relationship between Literature and Territory in Contemporary Veneto aims at investigating the interrelation between a geographically defined entity and the literary word. Placed in the context of a broader reflection on the dynamics of such relation, this thesis aims at outlining a specific set of theoretical references in order to analyse the case of contemporary Veneto through a close reading of some particularly relevant works by two authors from this region, Massimo Carlotto and Marco Paolini. Developed from an interest in the literary tradition of Veneto and in the theme of landscape and territory representation in literature, this thesis is comprised of two parts: the first one is dedicated to tracing the theoretical, historical, and literary coordinates that define the scope and frame of reference for the thesis; the second one conducts an in-depth analysis of the context in which the works of Carlotto and Paolini are situated. Drawing on concepts pertaining geography, cultural anthropology, and landscape theory, the premise of this thesis is that territory is a complex geographic, historical, social, economic, and cultural entity of which landscape constitutes the visible stratum. Siding with arguments that sustain the centrality of the role of landscape in the process of formation of people's identity, this thesis adopts such concept and employs it as a key to understand the relation between territory and literature. Through the analysis of La verità dell'Alligatore and Nordest by Carlotto and Il Milione and Bestiario Veneto - Parole mate by Paolini, the objective of this thesis is, on one side, to provide an insight into how the transformation of a territory can shape the formation of a collective identity, on the other side, to shed light on the means through the reflection on territory enters the literary space.

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation deals with the use of dialectal languages in the contemporary Italian theater. Indeed, these languages remain an important source of inspiration in the most innovating creations of the last thirty years, in spite of the paramount place the Italian language has come to have in the whole national territory since the Italian Unification. This study deals with the values and with what is at stake in these dialectal languages in today's theater which is, most of the time, created by actors-authors: therefore, the relationship between the artist, who is both creator and performer, and dramatic language, relies on a way of tackling the linguistic element that is fundamentally precognitive and corporal as well. After having cleared up the linguistic dynamics in the Italian theater since the Unification ; the study focuses on the work of five contemporary actors-authors: Marco Paolini, Ascanio Celestini, Spiro Scimone (Compagnia Scimone Sframeli), Emma Dante (Compagnia Sud Costa Occidentale) and Enzo Moscato. Studying the work of these artists, as well as a specific play, intends to draw up a cartography of the contemporary Italian theater that is inspired by dialect languages to create its own dramatic language. The study aims to lay emphasis on the convergence lines of creations which deals with three key notions, at the core of the study: time, territory and identity. These three notions will be progressively redefined and precised by working on the idea of limit and boundary

Abstract:
Arte Povera's works and productions constantly challenge the traditional fundamentals of History of Art, thus leading to the exploration of new artistic fields. Some members of the Italian group, in their will to break the limits between genres in order to question these very limits, concentrate on theatre to invest collective and creative spaces. This PhD is an analysis of the theatrical works by Jannis Kounellis, Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Mario Ceroli. These four specific approaches distinguish themselves by their ambitions and their scales. This university research aims at revealing the multiple intersections within the group, by exploring the interactions between visual arts and performing arts. The issue at stake is both to shed light on artists and works from the Arte Povera and to compare their experiences to the theatre, while considering the central role of the theatrical environment in the sixties and seventies in Italy in a time of revolutionary and prolific experimental creation. The ambition is to present the details of these specific artistic practices that characterize the approaches of Arte Povera's members, and then to extend this analysis to a more global questioning of other artists' approaches sharing the same concerns

Abstract:
How can the new dynamic in European integration politics during the second half of the 1980’s be explained? What were the driving forces behind the Single European Act, the achievement of the Single Market, the Schengen agreement, the EC’s expansion to the south, and the new steps towards Monetary Union and the Common Foreign and Security Policy? In this book, using numerous discoveries from the archives, historians from 12 countries show how the European Community reacted to the challenges of globalisation and the reform initiatives by Mikhail Gorbachev. In doing so, they write a new chapter in the history of European integration: the emergence of the European Union.
