Abstract:
In this PhD thesis, we suggest a method which globally models every kind of movement with linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials. In order to do that, we project each vector field, which represents the studied motion, onto an orthogonal basis of Legendre's polynomials. So, we achieve a polynomial expression of this movement. A low-order modelling permits to give a physical interpretation to the dominant motion of the image sequence. This feature is interesting for applications like visual surveillance, indexing or behaviour study. We prove that our method can also model complex motions like fluid flows. The polynomial representation, the low-time computing and the high compression rate have a significant pratical importance to analyse this kind of data

Abstract:
The modification of carbon substrates by chemical functions significantly affects the surface properties of the material. These changes can be carried out by different methods: oxidation of the support, or grafting of molecules by reduction of a synthon. This last method seems more attractive because it helps to maintain the integrity of the support. The realization of grafted layers on carbon surface is carried out by reduction of diazonium or iodonium ions. This reduction results in the formation of radicals, which react with carbon surface to form a covalent bond. This method allows grafting a large variety of molecules; by selecting appropriate terminal groups it is possible to change different characteristics of the active layer of PEMFC electrodes, such as the hydrophobic / hydrophilic properties, platinum / support interactions and ionic conductivity. In this context, thiophenol grafted layers were realized to strengthen the anchorage of platinum nanoparticles on carbon support, limiting the migration of nanoparticles in course of sintering process. Carbon functionalized with benzenesulfonic acid groups and trifluoromethylbenzene groups were used to adjust the wettability of active layers, in order to improve water management in fuel cells. Grafted layers of alkynyl groups with ionic end functions could also be performed to confer ionic conductivity (protons or hydroxyls) to the catalyst support, in order to improve the use of catalyst in fuel cell electrodes

The billfish are oceanic pelagic species often caught by the tuna fleet and with great interest of sport fishing. This group of fish has specific legislation prohibiting the marketing and export of two species, Kajuikia albida e Makaira nigricans, in Brazil. DNA barcode is a universal system of molecular identification based on a sequence of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) of about 650 base pairs, serving as an identifying genomic mark in each species. This system has been used successfully to identify mischaracterized samples illegally marketed, like sample materials from sharks and other endangered species of organisms. The Barcode DNA technique was used to identify billfish marketed in the second largest fishing warehouse in Latin America, the CEAGESP-SP and the international airport of São Paulo, Brazil. 302 samples of billfish were collected during three inspection actions carried out by IBAMA, the executing agency of the national environmental policy. After DNA sequencing procedures it was possible to identify 72 samples (91.14%) by CEAGESP at the level of species, being 21 (29.17%) identified as Xiphias gladius, 44 (61.1%) as Istiophorus platypterus and 7 (8.33%) as Kajikia albida, this latter species determined as a market prohibited in Brazil and considered vulnerable in the list of endangered species of the IUCN and in the official list of species of endangered Fauna - Fish and Aquatic Invertebrates. At the International Airport of Guarulhos it was possible to identify 223 samples (100%), all identified as Xiphias gladius as declared by the exporter and indicated by its NCM (Mercosur Common Nomenclature). Molecular analysis has proven to be an excellent tool to identify billfish in Brazil in different centers such as Guarulhos International Airport and CEAGESP, SP. The identification of the white marlin being illegally traded in CEAGESP demonstrates the ineffectiveness of the current monitoring techniques used and emphasize the need for adopting better public policies for the conservation of the species.

Abstract:
The study of shrinkage – swelling mechanisms of soils in the Marais de Rochefort and Marais Poitevin is based on a mineralogical and structural characterisation and on a multi-scale approach of the relations between structural and hydromechanical properties. Illite, kaolinite, chlorite and illite / smectite mixed layer constitute the dominant clay minerals in the sediment. This composition is stable in spite of a discreet illitisation observed in soils and palaeosol. The gravimetric water profiles evolve from the shrinkage limit in surface to the liquidity limit at 3 meters deep. A preliminary shrinkage model was established on the relation between the water content profiles and the shrinkage curve. The in situ investigations based on the cone resistance and resistivity measurements allow to show the soil behaviour laws in two crossed diagrams : void ratio (e) – gravimetric water content (W) – cone resistance (Qd) – saturation index (Sat) and e – W -  - Qd. The Archie’s low was calibrated in this mineralogicaly homogeneous soil saturated with variable salinity water. The relation between hydraulic conductivity and microstructure was comprehended using image analyses and œdometer tests on intact samples. In situ, the electrical resistivity imaging shows the sediment structure down to the substratum. Three levels are superimposed: (1) the superior bri in solid state, crosscut by the prism – like structure, (2) the inferior bri, plastic to liquid, with high porosity and (3) deeper bri densified with depth. Thus the hydraulic transfers are mainly governed by the porosity of the plastic-to-liquid bri level

Abstract:
Identifying the mechanisms responsible for the production of sound in free-shear flows is a challenging task due to our poor understanding of the underlying physics, in particular concerning the flow acoustic interactions. A new analysis methodology based on a decomposition of the Lighthill aerodynamic sources term is proposed, aimed at understanding the respective roles of the subsequent subterms and extracting their radiating components using a filtering in wavenumber space. This analysis is performed on a temporal mixing-layer database obtained from a direct computation of sound and the essence of sound production mechanism is found to comprise sublte imbalances which disrupt inherent space-time symmetries between the various subterms. To enable direct computation of sound in three-dimensional configurations and constitute aerodynamic and acoustic databases amenable to this analysis methodology, a specific numerical treatment using high-order upwind compact schemes is developed. Their ability to direct computation of sound is evaluated on the test case of a mixing layer for which a reference solution is available. These schemes have proved their efficiency to damp spurious oscillations and their robustness faced with a marginal resolution or a Reynolds number increase. Thanks to this development, two simulations of a round jet are performed, an isothermal and an anisothermal ones. Preliminary results are presented on both the aerodynamic and acoustic fields, and temperature effects are investigated

Abstract:
Support vector machines (SVMs) and correlation filters (CFs) are popular for automatic target recognition (ATR) and other computer vision tasks. SVMs are designed to maximize the separation between two classes in some feature space. SVMs are popular for classification (determining the class-label of a target) and generalize well for targets not in the training set, but SVMs are not specifically designed for localization (finding where a target is). When using SVMs, regions of interest (ROIs) are usually first extracted using some other detector before SVMs are applied. CFs accurately localize the target of interest in a large scene but their classification performance may not be as good (compared to SVMs) for targets not in the training set. In this thesis we introduced new linear CFs by combining the criteria used in state-of-the-art CFs to improve performance. Using our improved linear CF designs, we present a new type of classifier called the Maximum Margin Correlation Filters (MMCFs), which combine the generalization capabilities of SVMs and the shiftinvariance of correlation filters (CFs), i.e., MMCF is also invariant to shifts between the training images and the query image, thereby avoiding the need for image registration and detection before SVM-based classification. We extend our work to quadratic correlation filters (QCFs) and present the Quadratic MMCF (QMMCF) and show its relation to the second order polynomial Kernel SVM (referred to as Quadratic SVM (QSVM) in this thesis). We extend the capabilities of CFs and therefore of MMCFs and QMMCFs to include vector features (as opposed to scalar features, i.e., gray-scaled pixels) in order to use features such as the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG).We test the efficacy of the our designs on real data and show improvement over linear and quadratic CFs and linear and quadratic SVMs.

Abstract:
This work is about the migration of people coming from Mardin through their life story. Mardin, situated in South East Turkey and lying right upon the Syrian border is home to a great many different ethnic and religious communities : Sunnis Chaffi Kurds, Sunnis Hanefi Arabs and Turks (who are Tchetchens at origin), Orthodox Syriaques, Catholic Armenians and Gregorians and finally Yezidis whose religion predates many of our modern day religions. Migration is very much a way of life for many of these people, effecting their life style and their family structures. But does migration serve to reinforce or weaken the very cultural and religious identities that mark them out? This study analyses not only how and why such communities migrate but how migration effects the behaviour patterns of those that do it, not only within the communities themselves but also between the different migratory communities. By adopting a micro social approach the study takes into consideration the various social and religious issues now facing Turkish society as a whole

Abstract:
In this thesis we study the problem of learning under uncertainty using the statistical learning paradigm. We rst propose a linear maximum margin classi er that deals with uncertainty in data input. More speci cally, we reformulate the standard Support Vector Machine (SVM) framework such that each training example can be modeled by a multi-dimensional Gaussian distribution described by its mean vector and its covariance matrix { the latter modeling the uncertainty. We address the classi cation problem and de ne a cost function that is the expected value of the classical SVM cost when data samples are drawn from the multi-dimensional Gaussian distributions that form the set of the training examples. Our formulation approximates the classical SVM formulation when the training examples are isotropic Gaussians with variance tending to zero. We arrive at a convex optimization problem, which we solve e - ciently in the primal form using a stochastic gradient descent approach. The resulting classi er, which we name SVM with Gaussian Sample Uncertainty (SVM-GSU), is tested on synthetic data and ve publicly available and popular datasets; namely, the MNIST, WDBC, DEAP, TV News Channel Commercial Detection, and TRECVID MED datasets. Experimental results verify the e ectiveness of the proposed method. Next, we extended the aforementioned linear classi er so as to lead to non-linear decision boundaries, using the RBF kernel. This extension, where we use isotropic input uncertainty and we name Kernel SVM with Isotropic Gaussian Sample Uncertainty (KSVM-iGSU), is used in the problems of video event detection and video aesthetic quality assessment. The experimental results show that exploiting input uncertainty, especially in problems where only a limited number of positive training examples are provided, can lead to better classi cation, detection, or retrieval performance. Finally, we present a preliminary study on how the above ideas can be used under the deep convolutional neural networks learning paradigm so as to exploit inherent sources of uncertainty, such as spatial pooling operations, that are usually used in deep networks.

Abstract:
We address the problem of binary linear classification with emphasis on algorithms that lead to separation of the data with large margins. We motivate large margin classification from statistical learning theory and review two broad categories of large margin classifiers, namely Support Vector Machines which operate in a batch setting and Perceptron-like algorithms which operate in an incremental setting and are driven by their mistakes. We subsequently examine in detail the class of Perceptron-like large margin classifiers. The algorithms belonging to this category are further classified on the basis of criteria such as the type of the misclassification condition or the behaviour of the effective learning rate, i.e. the ratio of the learning rate to the length of the weight vector, as a function of the number of mistakes. Moreover, their convergence is examined with a prominent role in such an investigation played by the notion of stepwise convergence which offers the possibility of a rather unified approach. Whenever possible, mistake bounds implying convergence in a finite number of steps are derived and discussed. Two novel families of approximate maximum margin algorithms called CRAMMA and MICRA are introduced and analysed theoretically. In addition, in order to deal with linearly inseparable data a soft margin approach for Perceptron-like large margin classifiers is discussed. Finally, a series of experiments on artificial as well as real-world data employing the newly introduced algorithms are conducted allowing a detailed comparative assessment of their performance with respect to other well-known Perceptron-like large margin classifiers and state-of-the-art Support Vector Machines.

Abstract:
The work of the American abstract artist Brice Marden, born in 1938, is made up of two parts outwardly distinct: paintings with monochromatic panels and pictures with a network of lines, which earlier works on paper announced. It is actually very coherent, subjected to opacity and to transparency alike. If the latter is a temptation, the opacity is always triumphant. Two actions of the artist are essential in connection with that: recovering and erasing. His works, whose titles refer to reality or to the whole art history but whose real subjects are death, melancholy, memory and presence, question the possibilities of abstract painting and declare its vitality

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of earplugs to improve perceived sleep quality in hospitalized patients. Sleep disruption is a common problem for hospitalized patients and has been shown to lead to physical and emotional complications. A variety of factors such as pain, illness, stress, worry, noise, lights and patient care activities contribute to disturbed sleep. Studies on sound in hospitals have shown that levels exceed recommendations by the Environmental Protection Agency. Limited research has shown that earplugs are a cost-effective, nonpharmacologic intervention with clinical usefulness to improve sleep quality. The study design was a quasi-experimental pilot study using a pre-test and post-test with the participants serving as their own control. Participants were recruited from a telemetry unit at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings, Montana. The Verran and Snyder-Halpern Sleep Scales were selected to measure sleep quality. Ten participants were able to complete the two nights of study. The proposed hypothesis was supported for the sleep characteristic, soundness of sleep, with an improvement greater than 15 mm on the night with the ear plugs. Subjective findings identified positive comments with only one participant unable to tolerate the earplugs. The improvement in sleep was clinically significant for these participants. Hospitals should consider creating a sleep promotion policy and re-evaluating their night care practices. Earplugs could be included as an option for patients, and patients experiencing sleep difficulties should be encouraged to try earplugs. Further research is needed with a variety of populations and a large sample size. Research should also be done on nurses\' knowledge and beliefs regarding sleep and sleep interventions. This information could provide useful information on areas where additional education is needed.

Abstract:
Both the USDA and private firms are allocating substantial capital towards providing accurate and timely crop production forecasts. Production forecasts based on satellite imagery have been suggested as a means of making forecasts earlier, more frequent, and cheaper. This thesis attempts to determine if satellite data increases information with respect to crop condition and final production. If so, does the additional information have value and can it be used to make profitable trades in the futures market? These questions are answered using NDVI data for Iowa and Illinois. Jackknifed out-of-sample crop production estimates are calculated for both corn and soybeans for the individual states. A variety of models were used, each including different bi-weekly periods. USDA crop condition scores are also tested in some of the models. A model based on the current stocks-to-use ratio for each commodity is used to predict the market's expected production level. When the satellite forecast differed from the market's expectation a trade was made in the futures markets. Both futures and option strategies were tested. Results suggest that satellite based production forecasts may result in profitable soybean trades, particularly when downside risk can be reduced by trading options. Further work should focus on refining the satellite images used in the model and exploring more complex option trading strategies.

Abstract:
Montana's Upper Clark Fork River Basin contains hundreds of square kilometers of land impacted by mine wastes and/or smelter emissions from decades of copper mining and related activities. Contaminated soils in the Basin are often acidic and highly enriched with the trace elements cadmium, copper, arsenic, lead, zinc, and others. Natural plant colonization is often impaired, as evidenced by barren areas that are so phytotoxic that normal germination and establishment cannot occur. One reclamation strategy being used is in-place treatment with soil amendments including lime and other products. This provides a more hospitable substrate for plants by raising pH and lowering the mobile and bioavailable fraction of metals. Since contaminants are not removed with in-place treatment, short-term and long-term effectiveness of the soil amendments and the vegetative cover continue to be debated. Several experimental plots within the Basin have been treated in-place, but have developed plant communities of limited diversity where some seeded species failed to establish or persist. A greenhouse pot study was used to determine site-specific toxicity thresholds across a dilution of total metals and arsenic that significantly reduced plant growth. Two sets of contaminated and reference soils collected from the Basin were mixed to obtain metal and arsenic concentration gradients from 244 to 5885 and 250 to 7521 mg/kg, respectively. Five native and two non-native grasses were grown in separate trials. Percent emergence, shoot height, total biomass and root mass ratio were analyzed. Sensitivity of the seven grasses varied according to the response measured and dilution series. Most species showed significant reductions in total biomass and shoot height when the sum of total metals and arsenic was 559 to 1900 mg/kg. Redtop (Agrostis gigantea Roth) was the most tolerant species, not displaying significant decreases in total biomass until the sum of total metals and arsenic reached 5783 mg/kg. Because the study used contaminated environmental samples and nonagricultural species, the results may better estimate site-specific ecological risk and toxicity thresholds for in-place treated soils in the UCFRB over studies performed in sand with inappropriate surrogate species.

Abstract:
Failures of mobile computing devices can lead to severe data loss. Collaborative robotic systems, designed to work in total autonomy, are sensitive to these failures. Usual methods relying on remote backup can no longer be used in a context of high mobility. Short-range communication media can be used to overcome data failure through opportunistic communications for data backup. When two devices enter their respective communication range, they can initiate an ephemeral data exchange. To overcome the lack of global network coverage in those system, we propose a backup system based on opportunistic communications to reduce the costs induced by failures inside a swarm of autonomous mobile robots

Abstract:
Mardin&

s unique stone architecture has evolved within various ethnical and religious communities. Regardless of its hybrid nature, with the effect of topography, the fabric has a uniform character. The interventions made to the city during the last century have repeated fragments of stereotype apartment building instead of sustaining traditional typologies (building types with living unit, aiwan, arcade, terrace and courtyard). Typological difference of these interventions has caused an incongruous hybridization and deterioration in the fabric. Hybridization in architecture, for Felipe Hernandez, is not only diversity of architectural styles and materials. Furthermore, it is a cultural issue related with changes in the society. Mardin confronts hybridization because the traditional buildings are incapable of embracing contemporary functions. This has been exemplified with Gö

House and neighboring buildings. Late interventions are distinguished from the historical ones according to typological differences. This study accepts hybrid as a problem but also as a fact
thus aims to regenerate it. The historical types, accepted as original, are interpreted with a contemporary sense in reference to debates on sustaining urban form with new buildings and theories on typology which define it as open to creativity, vague in form and reproducible. This is exemplified by a proposal, an infill in the fabric. Spatial sequence of the proposal refers to traditional plan typologies while these spaces embrace contemporary functions and their architectonic expression refers to contemporary architecture. So, in relation to the facts of the present context the proposal fulfills its spatial expectations while respecting physical context.

Abstract:
This thesis is dedicated to a filmic expression that is often underestimated in film studies, since this long-term work deals with contemporary issues in American personal documentary film. The 60's represent an epistemological break in the history of documentary cinema, in that the filmmaker began to involve himself in the filmic process, both before and behind the camera. What's more, he now assumes that his visions and images of the external world are no longer objective but seen through the prism of his subjectivity, which helps him discover who he really is. Documenting the world, the other, while documenting himself – or herself. This approach, based on close reading and film aesthetic analysis, eschews aporetic generalization to root itself in issues raised by specific films and filmmakers, such as voice over commentary, music and sounds, editing, found footage, fictionalisation or metaphorical images. The films selected for study belong to idiosyncratic bodies of works of filmmakers like Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas, Robert Kramer, Emile de Antonio, Su Friedrich, Shirley Clarke or the Maysles Brothers, among others. They all engage themselves in a process of self-inscription to tell their experiences of birth, childhood, exile, memory, nostalgia, loss, death or legacy

Abstract:
Environmental education is one of the main tools to overcome the current loss of biodiversity. Media and school occupy a central place to educate public, but they broadcast almost exclusively messages based on few spectacular and exotic animals (polar bear, whales…). Scholar education has a crucial role to promote knowledge, awareness, of schoolchildren and thus their willingness to protect a wide range of organisms, including less popular species. Using written questionnaires, we surveyed in ten different countries on Europe 7, Africa 1, and Asia 2, the perceptions of schoolchildren aged from 6 to 14 years for animals. The outcome is alarming: schoolchildren are disconnected from their local environment. Mirroring media, schoolchildren can list very few animal species requiring protection which they watched on TV screens. However, a survey of the perception of schoolchildren for snakes showed a moderate aversion level and a clear willingness to protect them, a surprising and encouraging result. We brought almost 600 children to discover native snakes through field experiences. Via the activation of the affective channel, almost all the children expressed their willingness to protect snakes, at the same level than panda and other loveable species. This study reveals the failure of the scholar educational system that focuses on dogmatic message, virtual information and intellectual approach to the detriment of field trips and physical contact with wildlife. A concrete approach of biodiversity is however essential and urgent to reconnect children with their local environment. Our results reinforce the (so far) fruitless message that schoolchildren should be bring into the field to generate positive attitude and behaviour toward the protection of the biodiversity. Environmental education should not neglect unpopular organisms declared. To progress, significant efforts must be produced to not limit conservation messages and actions to few iconic species

Abstract:
Our research group developed an original anionic domino tranformation based on a one-pot two-carbon ring expansion of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds called MARDi cascade (Michael addition, Aldol cyclisation, Retro-Dieckmann) leading selectively to polyfunctionnalized cyloheptanes or cycloheptenes. In this context, we have studied Michael addition catalyzed by phosphazene bases to propose asymmetric version of the MARDi cascade. This study led us to underline the influence of water in the acceleration of the Michael addition of 1,3-dicarbonyl to various acceptors. Moreover, we have demonstrated the efficiency of this sequence in the synthesis of heterocycles such as oxepanes, azepanes and thiepines. Finally, we have also studied the reactivity of thiofunctionnalized ketones, the mechanism in the case of 2-substituted acroleins and the diastereoselectivity of this new domino transformation

Graham, Andrew W. "Methane along the western Mexican margin." Thesis, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/6976.

Full text
Abstract:
Methane and the processes controlling its distribution along the western Mexican margin were investigated in November 2001. Water column and sediment core samples were collected from 14 stations along the margin, in and around the Gulf of California, for shore-based analysis of methane concentrations and methane stable carbon isotopic ratios. These stations occupied both basin and open margin sites in and below the oxygen minimum zone. Methane concentrations in the upper 200 m of the water column were supersaturated at all sites. The sea-air fluxes of methane that resulted from this supersaturation ranged between 0.85 and 5.0 umol m-2 d-1, indicating that methane fluxes from this area are not significantly larger than from other ocean areas. Local subsurface methane maxima had concentrations ranging from 4.6 to 10.1 nM, larger than those found at open ocean stations (2 - 4 nM). Below 200 m, the hydrocast stations fell into 3 groups: silled basins, open margin sites with sediments below the oxygen minimum zone, and open margin sites with sediments intersecting the oxygen minimum zone. Both silled basin sites had highly elevated methane concentrations (24.9 - 48 nM) in the bottom waters overlying the sediments. The S13C values of this methane ranged from -54 to -59 vs. PDB. The majority of the open margin sites had seafloor depths which were positioned below the oxygen minimum zone (> 1000 m) and contained relatively low methane concentrations below the subsurface maximum. Two open margin stations with water depths (590 and 450 m) that intersect the oxygen minimum zone had highly elevated methane concentrations throughout the water column. A maximum methane concentration of 78 nM, associated with the isotopically depleted S13C value of - 60 , was found overlying the sediments at the southernmost station. Sediment pore water methane concentrations were low but increased dramatically once sulfate concentrations decreased to < 3 mM. The depth of the sulfate reduction zone was shallow (80 - 100 cm) at the stations on the west side of Baja California but deeper (> 150 cm) and variable inside the Gulf of California. Methane fluxes from the sediments ranged from 0.24 to 5.5 umol m-2 d-1, with the highest fluxes observed on the west side of Baja California. Stations with seafloors in the oxygen minimum zone had much higher methane concentrations throughout the water column than stations with seafloors below the oxygen minimum zone. The sediments along the western Mexican margin could be a source of methane to the eastern tropical North Pacific at locations where the margin and oxygen minimum zone intersect.

Serration development in A. thaliana requires both the transcription factor CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON2 (CUC2) and the auxin efflux facilitator PIN-FORMED1 (PIN1), which regulates polar auxin transport by forming convergence points (Hay et al., 2006; Nikovics et al., 2006; Scarpella et al., 2006). In Chapter 3, I investigate how CUC2, PIN1 and auxin interact to control serration development. I demonstrate that CUC2 promotes PIN1 convergence point and auxin activity foci formation along the margin of the leaf, whilst high auxin activity represses CUC2 expression. Furthermore, interspersed peaks of CUC2 and auxin activity pattern serration development along the proximo-distal axis of the leaf. Thus, auxin, PIN1 and CUC2 form a negative feedback loop that patterns serration development. CUC genes and PIN1 are required for leaflet development in Cardamine hirsuta (Barkoulas et al., 2008; Blein et al., 2008), a close relative of A. thaliana that produces compound leaves subdivided into units termed leaflets. However, it is unclear how CUC and PIN1 interact to control leaflet development. In Chapter 4, I demonstrate that similar to A. thaliana, CUC genes promote PIN1 convergence point and auxin activity foci formation at the C. hirsuta leaf margin, whilst high auxin activity represses CUC2 expression. These genetic interactions likely create interspersed peaks of CUC2 and auxin activity that pattern leaflet development. Thus, the same negative feedback loop between CUC, PIN1 and auxin patterns both leaflet development in C. hirsuta and serration development in A. thaliana. KNOTTED1-LIKE HOMEOBOX (KNOX) genes are expressed in C. hirsuta leaves, and interact with ChCUC and PIN1 in positive and negative feedback loops, respectively, to control leaflet development (Barkoulas et al., 2008; Blein et al., 2008). KNOX genes are not expressed in A. thaliana leaves, but deeply lobed margins reminiscent of leaflets develop in association with ectopic KNOX expression in leaves (Chuck et al., 1996; Hay et al., 2006). However, it is unclear whether regulatory interactions of PIN1, CUC and KNOX which occur in C. hirsuta leaflets are employed during KNOX-induced lobe development in A. thaliana. In Chapter 5, I demonstrate that CUC2 and polar auxin transport are required for ectopic KNOX expression. Conversely, I show that KNOX misexpression up-regulates CUC2 expression in A. thaliana leaves. Thus, interactions between KNOX, CUC and PIN1 that occur in leaflet development in C. hirsuta also occur in association with KNOX-induced lobe development in A. thaliana. In addition to investigating the regulatory interactions between known components of leaf development pathways, I sought to identify novel genes that mediate CUC2-dependent serration development in A. thaliana. In Chapter 6, I identify a suppressor of the smooth margin phenotype of cuc2 leaves that partially restores PIN1 localisation in the absence of functional CUC2. Finally, in the General Discussion I evaluate how interlinking feedback loops between CUC, KNOX and auxin pattern serration and leaflet development. I then discuss why interlinking feedback loops may have been deployed to control outgrowths in both plant and animal systems.

Abstract:
With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the 9/11 attacks, the landscape of the freedom of religion has changed. The issues now facing freedom of religion varies greatly from the issues that the drafters of the universal declaration of human rights faced after World War II. In the light of the new issues that States face in the intersection of religion and societal interest, scholars have criticized the European Court of Human Rights to give too much leeway to the States in determining how the human rights should be implemented, by using the doctrine of margin of appreciation. Critics of the margin of appreciation claim that it is based on culture relativism and that the doctrine undermines the universality of the human rights. In order to decide if the margin of appreciation has indeed led to a relativization of the human rights I compared it to the jurisprudence of the UN Human Rights Committee and its use of the Syracusa principles. My conclusion is that the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights cannot be considered to be based on culture relativism. The jurisprudence of the UN Human Rights Committee is not entirely universal given that the contracting states can make reservation to articles in the ICCPR, which excludes the UN Committee’s jurisdiction of that specific provision in the treaty. Both the European Court and the UN Comittee has to balance their jurisdiction with sovereignty of the its member states and therefore it is inevitable that some leeway must be given to the member states, First of all, to decide whether the margin of appreciation is a sympton of culture relativity in a specific case, the Europan Court has to improve their way of describing and justifying how the margin of appreciation is used. Secondly, I will discuss the necessity to review the relationship between universalism and culture relativism in order to better understand international human rights law.

Abstract:
Modern ergs are characterized by bedform types and distributions that reflect the directional variability and result and drift potential of the wind regime. Sand accumulates in the erg-centre, an area of low resultant drift potential where large, slow-moving linear and star draas act as sediment sinks. The thickest ancient aeolian sequences contain stacked transverse and oblique draa and dry interdune deposits. Only these forms are able to transport sand rapidly enough to aggrade by autocyclic bedform climb. Subsidence probably played a crucial role in their accumulation. Todays ergs are poor analogues for ancient erg sequences due to the rapidity of recent climatic change and because they do not appear to be aggrading by bedform climb. The sand saturation concept introduced by Wilson (1971) provides a valuable tool for understanding the nature of ancient ergs and regional bounding surfaces. Undersaturated conditions cannot form dunes, but under metasaturated conditions, dunes with deflationary interdunes may be sustained, but these are incapable of preservation by bedform climb. Only under fully sand-saturated conditions can ergs aggrade by bedform climb. The presence of deflationary interdunes in ancient erg-margin sequences indicates metasaturated conditions and implies that preservation only follows subsidence or water-table rise. Two extremes or erg-margin interaction are identified here. One, the Kayenta-Navajo transition, occurred at the margin of an established erg. Fluvial-aeolian interactions form small-scale cycles that reflect the continual interplay between the active erg and adjacent fluvial system. Large-scale cycles appear to represent a climatically-controlled alternation between active and denudated erg phases, the latter allowing advance of fluvial systems over the former erg during wetter phases. The opposite extreme occurred during deposition of the Ormskirk sandstone in the Irish Sea. Here, conditions were predominantly unsaturated because, though aqueous and aeolian processes provided an abundant supply of sand, this was almost immediately removed from the aeolian system by the continually rising water-table, thus restricting erg and dunefield development to elevated areas.
