Abstract:
How does a free press resist state biopower? This article studies the development and dissemination of KANERE Free Press, a refugee-run news source operating in the Kakuma Refugee Camp, that was founded to create “a more open society in refugee camps and to develop a platform for fair public debate on refugee affairs” (KANERE Vision Statement). The analysis of KANERE and its impact on the political subjectivity of refugees living in Kakuma is framed by Foucault’s theory of biopower, the state-sanctioned right to “make live or let die” in its management of human populations. The author demonstrates the force relations between KANERE, its host country of Kenya, and the UNHCR through two ongoing stories covered by KANERE: the broad rejection of the MixMe nutritional supplement and the expressed disdain for the camp’s World Refugees Day celebration. Using ethnographic and decolonizing methodologies, the author privileges the voices and perspectives of the KANERE editors and the Kakuma residents they interviewed in order to provide a ground-level view of refugee’s lived experiences in Kakuma. As KANERE records refugees’ experiences of life in the camp, they construct a narrative community that is simultaneously produced by and resistant to the regulations and control of camp administration and state sovereignty. In doing so, KANERE creates a transgressive space that reaches beyond the confines of the camp.

Abstract:
<p>There are many potentials in the sector of <em>silvoagriculture, silvopastura </em>and <em>silvoagrofisher</em>y at Kandri and Cepoko district as “green belt” areas of Semarang. Unfortunately, these potentials do not give a significant impact on society yet. This is due to the lack of farmer’s institution system, limited human resource, and infrastructure. The Triple Helix approach involving academician, businessman, and government is found to be less optimal. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of the model used for empowering the farmers at dry land area through the Quadruple Helix approach as the development of Triple Helix one involving academician, businessman, civil society, and government. The locus of the research area is Kandri and Cepoko district at Gunungpati subdistrict in Semarang City of Central Java Province, Indonesia. This research employed qualitative and quantitative approaches. In the qualitative approach, the data are analyzed using an interactive model. While the quantitative approach, Human Development Index (HDI) analysis is employed. The results find that farmers' empowerment program is conducted through the Quadruple Helix approach by involving academicians, businessmen, local governments and civil society groups at the villages. Then, the HDI calculation results show that the index of human development in Kandri has decreased 0.09444. Before the program, it was amounted from 0.82367 to 0.72923. Whereas, the human development index of farmers in Cepoko before the program has increased from 0.83142 to 0.84085. Its increase reaches 0.09425. This indicates that the farmer group at Cepoko district is more resistant to national economic issues such as the weak exchange rate than the farmers in Kandri disctrict. Therefore, this study makes recommendation that farmers should organize integrated farming by establishing integrated economic region so that they can make use of existing resources efficiently and effectively. </p>

Abstract:
Cambodia is a rabid-endemic country. However, data on dog population characteristics are lacking, and there is no national dog vaccination program. We implemented the first extensive door-to-door longitudinal survey in 2 Cambodian provinces, namely Kandal and Battambang, to estimate dog population demographic parameters, identify dog ownership determinants, analyze dog management practices and estimate the yearly cumulative bite incidence and associated factors. During the first session, more than 5000 dogs were recorded and identified. Data on families, dogs and cats characteristics, as well as the number of bites experienced the year before in the family, were recorded. One year later, a second session was performed in both provinces to record missing dogs and the reasons for missing. Age-specific survival rates of the dog populations were computed using Kaplan-Meier estimates. Ownership determinants and bite risk factors were identified using a negative binomial regression model. Dog trade and dog meat consumption were often reported. We estimated high dog-to-human ratios (1:3.8 in Kandal, and 1:3.3 in Battambang). The mean age of dog populations was 26.4 months in Kandal against 24.3 in Battambang, with a survival rate of 52% at 24 months in Kandal (34% only in Battambang). They were no feral dogs, but the large majority of recorded dogs were free roaming. In both provinces, the number of dogs significantly increased in families with children younger than 15, and when the head of the family was a male. The estimated yearly cumulative bite incidences were 2.3 and 3.1% in Kandal and Battambang provinces respectively, and are among the highest in the world. Our survey provides valuable data to focus information programs, parametrize transmission models and identify efficient vaccination strategies to control rabies in Cambodia in the future.

Contributions of Tamil Bhakti poets to the literature have been significant in the past along with the contributions that they made to the social upliftment of the society. Ramavataram, popularly referred to as Kamba Ramayanam, is a Tamil epic that was written by the Tamil poet Kambar based on sanskrit version of Valmiki Ramayanam that describes the life of King Rama of Ayodhya. In this epic Hanuman is a imporatant character. The Tamil poet Kachiyappa sivachariyar greatest composition is the Kandha puranam based on sanskrit version of Sivasankara sangithai. The great warrior Veerabagu Dhevar is close associate of Lord Muruga. This article mainly focuses on stunning similarities between the supernatural powers of the ardent devotee, dedicated Hanuman described in Kamba Ramayanam and Veerabagu Dhevar in kandha puranam.

Abstract:
The ability to postpone one's execution in the market without penalty in search of a better price is an important strategic advantage in high-frequency trading. To elucidate competition between traders one has to formulate to a quantitative theory of formation of the execution price from market expectations and quotes. Equilibrium theory was provided in 2005 by Foucault, Kadan and Kandel. I derive an asymptotic distribution of the bids/offers as a function of the ratio of patient and impatient traders using the dynamic version of the Foucault, Kadan and Kandel limit order book (LOB) model. Our version of the LOB model allows stylized, but sufficiently realistic representation of the trading markets. In particular, dynamic LOB allows simulation of the distribution of execution times and spreads from high-frequency quotes. Significant analytic progress is made toward framing of short-term trading as competition for immediacy of execution between traders under imperfect information. The results are qualitatively compared with empirical volume-at-price distribution of highly liquid stocks.

Abstract:
Information technology today, is very developed and easy to find. Especially in information on Bogor tourist attractions such as the Bogor Palace, Tugu Kujang, and Pakansari Stadium. However, the data information held is not completely valid. Because many tourists get data that is not suitable, due to the lack of information obtained. Therefore, the researchers tried to make an android-based "Tourism Object in Bogor" application using Augmented Reality (AR) technology and the Lucas Kanade Algorithm, as well as Marker Based Tracking efforts to make it easier to get the information desired by tourism. Bogor is one of the cities in West Java Province that attracts many tourists, especially domestic tourists. However, there are still many tourist attractions in Bogor that are still many tourist attractions that have not been visited and are still not widely known by tourists. Until now, researchers have tried to make an android-based "Tourism Object in Bogor" application so that tourists know the shape of objects and information such as the Bogor Palace, Tugu Kujang, and Pakansari Stadium. Using Augmented Reality (AR) technology, the technology itself has photos, sounds, and 3d objects that can bring virtual 3d objects into the real world. The "Tourism Object in Bogor" application uses Android Studio, Unity, Sketchup, Vuforia, and Visual Studio. In order to make it easier for tourists to identify data on tourist attractions they want to visit. The application "Tourism Objects in Bogor" serves to share data information for local and foreign tourists, because this is an opportunity for the Bogor Regional Government to improve services and facilities in Bogor, so that tourists feel safe arriving and visiting Bogor.

Abstract:
After the end of formal apartheid, a number of South African feature films have explored queer white men in conservative social settings, with a particular focus on Afrikaans-speaking gay men. These films have reflected strict heteropatriarchal values within white Afrikaner culture where homosexuality is still often seen as a taboo topic. In this article I discuss two feature films with gay white male protagonists, Kanarie (2018) by Christiaan Olwagen and Moffie (2019) by Oliver Hermanus. These films both feature young men conscripted to fight in the South African Border War in the 1980s, but differ greatly in terms of genre, plot, and style. I argue that, while many scholars discuss whiteness as a general construct that affords privilege, the films demonstrate a split whiteness that is effected through the composition of particular shots and scenes as well as through the films’ processes of production and reception. Whiteness is split into an invisibilised, assumedly critical perspective on the one hand, with transnational links to the Global North, and a hypervisibilised, reified, and criticised racial identity on the other hand, located specifically in the heteropatriarchal Afrikaner male. Queer characters in both films are able to split their identities and dissociate from uncomfortable parts of their whiteness, taking on an assumed criticality that highlights their own oppression and exclusion. The films thus dismiss the protagonists’ complicity in white supremacy, and allow audiences to dissociate from their own complicity in anti-black violence and oppression.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this paper, I study the bodies in Mare Kandre’s two novels Bestiarium (1999) and Xavier (2002), with the help of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of the grotesque. I examine the worldview that is portrayed in the novels – focusing on the attitude towards death – and seek answers to the following questions: how do the human bodies look and how do they relate to their surroundings? What does the way they are portrayed say about the world the novels portray? And what role does laughter play in the novels? I also examine the similarity between a grotesque body, and a gothic monster. As a result, I find that one body may exist both in life and death at the same time, that the bodies can merge together, and that the boundaries between body and world may be exceeded. I also find the grotesque abilities of the body not to be threatening, but filled with possibilities. Here, even monsters are not harmful.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Their careers reveal how much the musical was transforming itself by the late 1940s, and how comfortably it moved between musical comedy and the musical play, uncovering ways of aligning them in innovative mutations. Moreover, the musical had come to amalgamate the responsibilities of director and choreographer and make the rise of the naturalistic actor not only possible but necessary. In a way, one could say that a Chicago musical was unthinkable until the liberation of Fosse and Verdon and the evolution of Kander and Ebb, out of musical comedy into the commentative show. Like Show Boat, Oklahoma!, and West Side Story, Chicago is an exhibition piece in the development of the elite yet populist and idealistic yet subversive national art form, the musical.

I have intensively focused on the International Task Force on Hepatitis B Immunisation – led by James Maynard, Alfred Prince and Richard Mahoney; the Children’s Vaccine Initiative led by or influenced by Scott Halstead, Philip Russell and Roy Widdus; the Bill and Melinda Gates’ Children’s Vaccine Programme led by Mark Kane and James Maynard; the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization created by Mark Kane, Tore Godal, Jacques-Francois Martin, Steve Landry and Amy Bateson; the Rockefeller Foundation’s Public-Private Partnership project single-handedly championed by Ariel Pablos-Mendez (with the support of Timothy Evans) – many of which were ultimately adopted by the Gates Foundation and (incorrectly) seen as originating with it; and the global polio eradication campaign conceived by William Foege, Alan Hinman, Ciro de Quadros and run by Bruce Alyward. Driven by a powerful moral imperative and social consciousness, these dozen and a half men fought to make things happen that under normal circumstances would not have happened in the fight to save the lives of countless children using vaccines and immunisation as their tools. Among their supporters have been many engaged and committed vaccine champions within the scientific community: scientist/activists working for what they believed was clearly the ‘Greater Good’.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how entertainment television addressed color-blind equality through an analysis of NBC's Julia, considered the most significant entertainment show of the civil rights years. Created by writer-director Hal Kanter and starring Diahann Carroll, Julia presented viewers with whites only as supporting characters. However, the image Julia provided could only clash uncomfortably with dominant news imagery of exploding ghettos, Black Panthers and other non-nonviolent militants, as well as the generalized chaos and upheaval characterizing the period. This chapter argues that Julia was a fictional vision of the “black and white together” utopia promised in the networks' March on Washington coverage. It also considers how black and white audiences as well as mainstream press critics all made sense of the show in notably different and, at times, contradictory ways. Finally, it discusses the concerns of black viewers and some white critics about Julia, including its depiction of the black family.

Once in class—with the Photoshopped picture of Kanye West interrupting Martin Luther King, Jr. (figure 1.1) on the screen behind me—I asked my students to define internet meme. There was the usual desk staring and head scratching, until a student in the back spoke up. “It’s like … a nationwide inside joke,” she said. Her unconventional definition inspired chuckles. But as the hours wore on, I realized its poignancy. Like inside jokes between friends, internet memes—the multimodal texts created, circulated, and transformed by countless cultural participants—balance the familiar and the foreign. And like inside jokes, internet memes are at once universal and particular; they allow creative play based on established phrasal, image, video, and performative tropes. The difference, of course, is the scale of these inside jokes. Assessing that scale, this book has charted the vibrancy that emerges when expressive strands become interactional threads, which in turn weave vast cultural tapestries. In the end, ...

This chapter and the next discuss the divergent experiences of Koreans on Qing (Kando) and Russian territory, respectively. The present chapter explores the competition between officials of Korea, China, and the Japanese empire to make jurisdictional claims on the Korean population in Kando, part of northeast Manchuria, from the late 1870s to 1930s. Dramatic changes in the geopolitics of the region transformed Qing and Chosŏn officials’ views of Kando and its Koreans from a territory and people whose jurisdiction could be taken for granted to those whose jurisdiction needed to be forcefully claimed. The chapter gives an overview of the borderland society that arose in Kando and discusses Chosŏn-Qing disputes about the border and subjecthood of Koreans. After 1905, Chinese and Japanese officials sparred over the proper citizenship of Koreans in Kando, a question that was linked to the ambiguous legal status of Manchuria and its sovereignty.

This chapter moves the investigation into mindfulness to Sri Lanka, where the tradition of Theravāda Buddhism emerged over two thousand years ago. After a visit to the ancient site of Anuradhapura, the author turns to the mindfulness practices of people in and around the city of Kandy. The chapter examines the focus of mindfulness in monks’ experiences at the Sri Lankan International Buddhist Institute and other monasteries in the area; the academic and supernatural powers of mindfulness in the minds of students at the University of Peradeniya; and the promises and purposes of mindfulness at the psychiatric unit at the Kandy General Hospital. It ends with a discussion of how psychiatrists and others make sense of mindfulness in a religiously heterogeneous culture, and how the Buddhist renderings of sati is thought to be applicable in other religious contexts.

Abstract:
Country and hip hop are divisive genres not just for their disparate sonic palettes but for how those sounds communicate identity. This aspect of modern popular music is captured in two songs that share the same title and release date but otherwise come from different worlds: “Made in America” by Toby Keith and “Made in America” by Jay Z and Kanye West, featuring Frank Ocean. This chapter shows that close listening to each track reveals surprising similarities between the two despite their apparent differences. Historicizing sounds that are strongly associated with each style—the banjo and the 808 drum machine—makes clear that they emerge from vastly different origins than suggested by their modern meanings.

Abstract:
This paper explores the sayings and stories of the ancient Chinese philosophers Guanzi, Hanfeizi, Xunzi and Yanzi. Their way of ruling the state and managing the people are analysed and discussed in line with thoughts from the mainstream and modern Western management gurus, such as Warren Bennis, Peter Drucker, Mary Parker Follett, Douglas McGregor, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Elton Mayo, and Jeffrey Pfeffer. Striking similarities call for addressing key issues in human resource management. East and west thinkers across 3000 years are identified. The principles-based ruling and management were found difficult to be taken seriously in ancient times as it is today. However, these principles must be rekindled to protect organisations and the world from mischievous behaviour that has caused much human suffering.

In a press release, Orson Welles claimed that he wanted Citizen Kane to conclude with “objects of art, objects of sentiment, and just plain objects.” This essay explores the relation, in the 1941 film, between the first of these (represented above all by the statues Charles Foster Kane collects in quantity) and the second (represented above all by the sled stamped “Rosebud,” one of the most famous things in cinema). It argues that Welles’s layered treatment of this relation discloses commonalities between, on the one hand, what Walter Benjamin called aura and, on the other, the affective power of the object of sentimental regard. It also argues that in striving to make a high-art film for a mass audience, Welles exploited these very commonalities—not to mention an association with loss that links auratic and sentimental objects to another kind of thing, film itself.

Abstract:
One of the common explanations for the expansion of Boko Haram in Lake Chad Basin is to consider that it has been fostered by the links between the jihadist movement and Kanuris. Indeed, the area of this insurgency largely covers the historical settlement area of Kanuris between northeastern Nigeria, the far-north of Cameroon and southeastern of Niger. Many Boko Haram supporters are from Kanuri populations. Yet many victims of this insurgency also belong to this community. Based on observations made in the far-north of Cameroon, this chapter calls into question the primacy of community ties in the diffusion of Boko Haram. It highlights the ability of the jihadist movement to undermine the tribal system upon which the state has always based its local domination. In particular, it shows how Boko Haram, whose social base is in reality trans-communal, has been able to take advantage of inequalities and divisions within tribes to create links stronger than community ties. This has taken place in a context of contestation of state and community elites by the marginalized peoples living in these border areas.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the libelous article which was written by part-time columnist Bill Page and published by the Kane County Chronicle. The article told the story of Mary Elizabeth “Meg” Gorecki, who had been a rising star in the Illinois legal community but committed ethics violations. In his column, Page claimed Bob Thomas originally wanted to pursue a much steeper penalty for Gorecki—up to and including disbarment. Yet in the end, Page contended, Thomas pushed a four-month suspension in return for the Gorecki camp assisting one of Thomas's appointed judges, Robert Spence, in an upcoming election. Thomas then called Chicago attorney Joseph Power, Jr. and suggested they consider filing a defamation lawsuit. Backed into a corner, Thomas was left with no alternative. He would not be able to uphold any semblance of moral authority if he permitted the libelous statements to live. Justice was necessary for him to keep working as a justice. An unconditional exoneration through litigation, he knew, was now the only way to retain the confidence of attorneys. The defamation suit was filed on January 16, 2004, naming Page, managing editor Greg Rivara, and the Shaw Suburban Newspaper Group (which owned the Chronicle) as defendants.

Daesung Lee of the University of Illinois, Chicago, taking advantage of the facile insertion of an alkylidene carbene into a C-Si bond, established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 6640) a general method for the conversion of an α-silyl ketone 1 into the silyl cyclopropene 3. Christopher D. Bray of Queen Mary University showed (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 4652) that the sulfonyl phosphonate 5 converted the enantiomerically pure epoxide 4 into the cyclopropane 6. Paul Margaretha of the University of Hamburg observed (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 728) smooth photochemical combination of 7 and 8 to give 9 with high diastereocontrol. Tõnis Kanger of the Tallinn University of Technology devised (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 2230) the three-component coupling of 10, 11, and diethyl amine to give, after reduction, the highly substituted cyclobutane 12. Min Shi of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry uncovered (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 902) an interesting new thermal rearrangement: the conversion of 13 to 14. José G. Ávila-Zárraga of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México applied (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 2232) Pd catalysis to the cyclization of the epoxy nitrile 15, redirecting the reaction from the expected cyclobutane to the cyclopentanol 16. Ullrich Jahn of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic effected (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 4480) the oxidative radical cyclization of 17 to 18. Initial deprotonation of the substrate with t -BuMgCl switched the product to the trans diastereomer. Jonathan W. Burton of the University of Oxford employed (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 2738) a related oxidative cyclization for the diastereoselective conversion of 19 to 20. E. J. Corey of Harvard University reported (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 300) a new ligand for the enantioselective Ni-mediated reduction of 21 to 22. Shu-Li You, also of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 4056) that the alcohol 23, readily prepared by oxidation of p -cresol, could be cyclized to the crystalline 25 in high ee.

Abstract:
Introduction: The identification of where the different types of information are stored was one of the first questions asked about the memory neurobiology. The researchers wanted to know if there would be a large “memory center” or if there were multiple locations in the brain responsible for its storage. Therefore, a bibliographical research was carried out for the scientific knowledge of the theme. Methodology: Is a bibliographic study, carried out through a literary survey in the Google Scholar and SciELO databases, in addition to neuroscience textbooks. Results: The behavior observed in the learning process of the aplysya slug at the cellular and molecular level was developed from an experimental system made by Eric Kandel, austrian physician and neuroscientist. To try to explain these behavioral phenomena, Kandel sought to understand the functioning of the sinatic phenomena, studying the sinaptic transmission between neurons at the time the reflexes occur. Thus, it determined the molecular and cellular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity of aplysia, similar to vertebrate systems. Conclusions: In view of the clarifications of the components involved in the neural circuits, two stages that participate in the learning and memory process are considered: the first would be the acquisition of a short-lived memory, resulting from a transient reinforcement of the synapses, due to the modification of preexisting proteins. And the second consolidation, characterized by a persistent reinforcement of synapses, due to changes in gene expression, followed by protein synthesis, resulting in new synaptic connections.

Abstract:
The monocular visual odometry algorithm involves several basic steps and for each of them there is a number of methods. The purpose of this work is to conduct practical research of methods for key point detection and the optical flow calculation in the problem of determining the unmanned ground vehicle proper motion. For detection method research conduction the image panel containing various distortions typical for follow robot shot was made. It has been educed that among the accounted methods FAST finds the largest number of points within the minimum elapsed time. At the same time image distortions strongly affect the results of the method, which is negative for the positioning of the robot. Therefore the Shi-Tomasi method was chosen for key points detection within a short period of time, because its results are less dependent on distortion. For research undertake a number of video clips by means of the follow robot shot was made in a confined space at a later scale of the odometry algorithm. From experimental observations the conclusions concerning the application of Lucas-Kanade optical flow method tracking the identified points on the video sequence have been made. Based on the error in the results obtained it was implication that monocular odometry cannot be the main method of an unmanned vehicle positioning in confined spaces, but in combination with probe data given by assistive sensors it is quite possible to use it for determining the robotic system position.

Abstract The field of computational dynamics is surveyed, focusing on issues relevant to the construction of a general purpose simulator with haptic display. The various formalisms available for generating dynamical models will be examined with regard to the form of the equations of motion which they produce. To render the effects of intermittent contact and other transient phenomena as driven by a human haptic explorer, a model is needed which is computationally efficient yet can handle changing kinematic constraints neatly. Models in dependent and independent coordinates produced with the Newton-Euler, Lagrangian and Kane formalisms will each be examined in order to provide a vantage point from which an informed selection may be made from among the many tools now available in computational dynamics.
