Abstract:
AbstractIn this article Margarethe Sannino shares some information on how legal research works in an international law firm with several offices. The focus is on German law and legal materials. A short introduction to German law is followed by an outline of German research resources in general and then, further on, there are two parts describing specific approaches to research from Margarethe's daily work; research on company/corporate law requests as well as research on legislative acts.

Abstract:
The following paper is about the Jewish woman Margarethe Babka, who lived in a so-called „protected mixed marriage“ („Mischehe“) during National Socialism in Tyrol. The status of being a protected Jew was said to be a protection from deportations, anti-Jewish laws or from detention in concentration camps. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, the biographical work will provide background data to a research project at the Department of Contemporary History of the University of Innsbruck, reconstructing the life of Jewish hybrids and „mixed marriages“ in the Gau Tyrol-Vorarlberg between 1938 and 1945; secondly, it will question the aspect of protection in the life of Jews living in a „Mischehe“ during National Socialism in Tyrol by portraying the story of Margarethe Babka.

Abstract:
Margarethe von Trotta’s 2013 film Hannah Arendt, starring Barbara Sukowa as Hannah Arendt raises sociopolitical and specifically philosophical questions in the contentious context of Arendt’s 1963 book Eichmann in Jerusalem.2 The film itself generated both sociopolitical and philosophical controversy. At the same time, the overwhelming majority of both popular and academic responses to the film have tended to focus on the controversy surrounding the subtitle of Arendt’s original book —A Report on the Banality of Evil.3 Even accounts inclined to praise the film emphatically criticize Arendt on the matter of Eichmann in Jersualem. I will here seek to speak about thinking.

Abstract:

Abstract:
MARGARET HOULIHAN, HEAD NURSE on the TV sitcom M*A*S*H*, is a perfect example of how nurse leaders used to be. Margaret is a dictator. When she faces a problem, she faces it alone, never involving her staff in finding a solution. Instead, Margaret sits up nights internalizing the problem, and later, she rudely barks her orders at the nursing staff. Margaret’s communications are unilateral; she gives orders and the staff listens. The staff nurses do not feel worthy enough to make suggestions or offer help because it is not Margaret’s style to listen. Kerfoot calls this type of leadership “command and control.”1 We can all probably name at least one controlling manager we have known. Many nurses today still prefer this structured style of leadership because accountability rests completely with the manager.

Abstract:
One of the most engaging, yet controversial, public intellectuals of the twentieth century, Hannah Arendt continues to be attacked with the same venom and ferocity that followed the publication of Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil (1963) more than fifty years ago. This article discusses why Arendt remains such a divisive figure and why her intellectual legacy is still so unsettling, particularly for Zionists. The essay examines how these issues are represented, negotiated, and problematized in Margarethe von Trotta’s film Hannah Arendt (Germany/ Luxembourg/France, 2012). It explores how one of the most prominent contemporary feminist filmmakers, whose work celebrates the life and activism of revolutionary women from Rosa Luxemburg to Gudrun Ensslin from the Red Army Faction, transforms the “historical Arendt” into a “cinematic Arendt.” Although not a revolutionary in the tradition of Luxemburg, the German-Jewish political thinker Arendt is an interesting choice for a left-leaning, post-Holocaust German woman director. Yet Arendt presents a paradox for feminists due to the contradictions embedded in her works and public pronouncements. The article examines these contradictions and how Arendt emerges from this film, which attempts to portray a politically engaged intellectual woman, a figure that is almost entirely absent from the film screen.
