Abstract:

AbstractThis article traces the trajectory of theory and praxis around nocività or noxiousness – i.e., health damage and environmental degradation – drawn by the workerist group rooted in the petrochemical complex of Porto Marghera, Venice. While Porto Maghera was an important setting for the early activism of influential theorists such as the post-workerist Antonio Negri and the autonomist feminist Mariarosa Dalla Costa, the theories produced by the workers themselves have been largely forgotten. Yet, this experience was remarkable because it involved workers employed by polluting industries denouncing in words and actions the environmental degradation caused by their companies from as early as 1968, when the workerists had a determining influence in the local factories. The Porto Marghera struggles against noxiousness contradict the widespread belief that what is today known as working-class environmentalism did not have much significance in the labour unrest of Italy’s Long 1968. The Porto Marghera group’s original contribution was based on the thesis of the inherent noxiousness of capitalist work and an antagonistic-transformative approach to capitalist technology. This led to the proposal of a counterpower able to determine “what, how, and how much to produce” on the basis of common needs encompassing the environment, pointing to the utopian prospect of struggling for a different, anti-capitalist technology, compatible with the sustainable reproduction of life on the planet.

Abstract:

En este artículo, se discute sobre como leer, analizar y conocer un espacio complejo como Porto Marghera, el distrito industrial de la ciudad italiana de Venecia. Los resultados de la investigación académica se presentan como Atlas: un conjunto de descripciones que se muestran en sus diferentes representaciones diagramáticas, para proporcionar instrumentos útiles a la hora de descifrar la forma compleja del lugar. El Atlas tiene en cuenta todos lo que se encuentran en la vasta área: edificios, infraestructuras, suelos y espacios libres; los denomina, los pone en un listado, los cataloga, los describe, los ordena, los selecciona según jerarquías manifestadas, pudiendo implementarlas sin limitaciones según las necesidades e hipótesis de lectura. El Atlas se configura como un conjunto de repertorios y colecciones que abren múltiples oportunidades para proyectos de regeneración territorial. El fundamento que ha orientado la recolección del material es el resarcimiento ambiental y funcional.

Abstract:

Purpose This paper aims to provide a comprehensive vision of the formation of intra-metropolitan clusters triggered by the deindustrialization of an urban area, namely, the district of Porto Marghera in the metropolitan area of Venice and propose possible regeneration scenarios based on intra-metropolitan clustering. Design/methodology/approach This paper adopts a multi-disciplinary approach and relies on both descriptive and qualitative evidence to show the economic transition occurred in the area of Porto Marghera in recent years. Findings Evidence shows the rise of two potential clusters in the KIBS and the creative industries in a well-delimited fringe area placed at the boundary between the urban centre and the core of the deindustrialized zone. Such clustering processes have been, however, characterized by two different and in some way alternative paths. The former stems from the combination of two autonomous entrepreneurial ideas that complemented one to each other. The latter relies on university-industry collaboration and on the presence of places of informal exchanges that proved to support personal networking, knowledge exchange and business opportunities. Research limitations/implications This paper suggests that local development policies could leverage on the presence of social entrepreneurs to substitute the creation of amenities and the provision of public goods in fragile territories. Originality/value This paper shows that, in presence of specific spatial conditions, deindustrialization can stimulate the formation of new intra-metropolitan through both top-down and bottom-up agglomeration process.

Abstract:

This paper deals with the case of one of the most important industrial application of membrane technology in the world: the upgrading of the main industrial wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of the petrochemical site of Porto Marghera, Northern Italy, completed on December 2005 and tested on September 2006. It describes the principal interventions of the plant upgrading and it discusses the removal obtained during the test periods for conventional pollutants as well as for micropollutants. The plant upgrading consisted of a series of improvements of the existing industrial WWTP, in order to increase the removal efficiency of the total suspended solids and the associate removal of ten micropollutant compounds, the so called forbidden substances. The most important intervention was the conversion of the existing activated sludge section into a membrane biological reactor, in order to guarantee adherence to the severe limits imposed by the special law issued to protect the Venice Lagoon, with particular reference to the mentioned 10 forbidden compounds. The experimental results and the numerous test-runs conducted confirmed the respect of the legal limits for the pollutants in the final effluent as well of the required removal rates for the different parameters. Therefore, the upgraded treatment plant was declared agreeing with the approved design.

Abstract:

Mestre sta progressivamente assumendo una propria identità, rovesciando il suo status di “città-periferia” del centro storico di Venezia. La città contemporanea, la Venezia contemporanea, con il suo essere “diffusa” e “metropolitana” e la complessa natura dei suoi problemi fa sì che le risposte vengano cercate al di fuori dei tradizionali strumenti di pianificazione. Ciò che la città chiede oggi è una maggiore vivibilità, la possibilità di usufruire degli spazi pubblici, la partecipazione degli abitanti delle varie municipalità nei processi di riqualificazione e in generale nei processi di trasformazione e innovazione urbana. I segni di questa trasformazione sono molteplici: dal recupero della memoria storica di luoghi e avvenimenti, al processo di riappropriazione di ampie e significative parti del suo territorio. La riqualificazione urbana del centro e dei vari quartieri periferici rappresenta, per la sua forte valenza storica, sociale, ambientale, il tentativo concreto di fruire in modo nuovo il territorio ricostituendo una forte integrazione tra la città di terraferma e il centro storico. La chiave di lettura, la lente d’ingrandimento attraverso la quale guardare a questi fenomeni, è quella dell’arte. Venezia muta, muta dal punto di vista fisico, economico, sociale: diminuiscono i residenti nel centro storico, a favore di un progressivo aumento della popolazione alle sue porte, in Terraferma. I confini della città dunque si dissolvono, nonostante l’impedimento fisico dovuto alla sua conformazione lagunare. La riqualificazione urbana del centro e dei vari quartieri periferici, per il loro forte portato storico, sociale, ambientale, il tentativo ormai concreto di ripensare un territorio in cui deve tornare ad essere prioritario e forte lo scambio e l’integrazione fra terra e ed acqua, fra la città di terraferma e la sua frazione insulare. Anche il recupero e la valorizzazione delle fortificazioni che nell’Ottocento e nel Novecento costituivano il “campo trincerato di Mestre” rientrano a pieno titolo in questo scenario. Nel cuore di Mestre c’è un posto che attende silenziosamente di essere ulteriormente valorizzato per diventare un’occasione di ripensamento della città di Venezia: Forte Marghera. Analogamente a quanto è avvenuto nel corso della sua vita, ancora una volta lo storico complesso del Forte Marghera si trova in un momento di transizione. In seguito alla cessione delle sue funzioni militari, e dopo vari passaggi di mano, il Comune di Venezia, proprietario dell’immobile, ha delegato la Fondazione Forte Marghera di gestire il Centro studi per la valorizzazione delle architetture militari e dei sistemi difensivi che vi è all’interno, assieme al resto del forte. Il percorso che si sviluppa all’interno di questa tesi parte analizzando accezioni e criticità dei vuoti urbani, con il proposito di fornire alcune ipotesi di risposta sperimentate da Forte Marghera nel tentativo di ricrearsi un’identità. La proposta progettuale che ne scaturisce si concretizza in una metodologia basata su interventi caratterizzati da una loro temporaneità, inseriti in una visione più ampia, che si discosta dalla rigidità e dalla lentezza della pianificazione tradizionale e mira al dialogo con altre realtà nascenti in terraferma, quali ad esempio l’M9. Il progetto stesso viene utilizzato come strumento di un’analisi che si sviluppa dinamicamente alla ricerca di nuove vocazioni d’uso e per indagare la possibilità di generare nuove relazioni con Venezia Centro storico, nell’intento di coadiuvarne l’afflusso turistico. L’ambizione di Forte Marghera è quella di essere una scintilla in grado di riattivare e rinnovare le energie di questo vuoto nel cuore della terraferma veneziana, riconnettendola con la città insulare.

Abstract:

La tesi si occuperà di ripercorrere la storia della comunità di Marghera attraverso l’analisi di alcuni luoghi simbolici principali collocati lungo il percorso della via Fratelli Bandiera, posta come confine fra il quartiere urbano di Marghera e la zona industriale e definita dalla percezione comune come un luogo degradato. Verranno analizzati quattro luoghi considerati rilevanti nella costruzione delle narrative della comunità: il primo (cap. 1) è il capannone del Petrolchimico, che rimanda alla dimensione del lavoro. Il cap.2 riguarda invece la vertenza Vinyls, i cui lavoratori hanno dato un significato positivo al simbolo della torcia, mettendo in atto una tecnica del corpo (Mauss). Il cap.3 parlerà della Chiesa di Gesù Lavoratore, attraverso i racconti di una famiglia e le raffigurazioni all’interno della Chiesa, che insieme descrivono un sistema valutato secondo la categoria di habitus di Bourdieu. Il cap.4 si occuperà di quello che rimane oggi nella comunità: i luoghi trattati sono l’ex CRAL Montedison e il Centro Sociale Rivolta. Il secondo è stato un laboratorio di memorie e narrazioni in merito a un incidente industriale del 2002 a cui è seguito un processo di deindustrializzazione che ha portato la comunità ad attivare dei processi di blaming incrociato, in base a una diversa percezione del rischio. Si analizzeranno i concetti di incorporazione di Csordas e di Schepher-Hughues.

Abstract:

Il problema del traffico navale nella Laguna di Venezia è una delle questioni ambientali più dibattute nel recente periodo. In particolar modo gli effetti della navigazione attraverso il canale Malamocco-Marghera e le sue conseguenze sulle zone limitrofe che, nel corso degli anni, hanno subito trasformazioni evidenti con fenomeni erosivi generalizzati. Per questo motivo lo studio è incentrato sulle variazioni morfologiche dovute al traffico navale nelle aree lagunari prossime a tale canale. Nel lavoro di tesi si è considerata la variazione della linea di riva della cassa di colmata B localizzata nell’area a sud di Fusina. A questo scopo si sono selezionati, analizzati e interpretati materiali fotogrammetrici e immagini satellitari che ricoprono il periodo dal 1954 al 2014 attraverso l’utilizzo di software GIS. Dall’elaborazione dei dati è risultato che l’erosione della linea di riva è un fenomeno continuo che però si caratterizza per variazioni d’intensità sia nello spazio che nel tempo, all’interno del periodo considerato. Contemporaneamente all’analisi della documentazione fotografica sono stati avviati una serie di rilievi in campo per quantificare le variazioni attuali e confrontarle con l’evoluzione storica. Contemporaneamente sono stati prelevati campioni di sedimento dell’area per una caratterizzazione stratigrafica e granulometrica dei depositi finalizzata all’interpretazione dei processi osservati. L’analisi dei risultati ottenuti permette di attribuire i fenomeni erosivi osservati all’azione diretta dell’onda di depressione (onda di Bernoulli) generata dal passaggio delle navi nel canale Malamocco-Marghera.

Abstract:

Attraverso la tesi sottoposta a valutazione (Dalla laguna a Marghera. Le questioni del patriarcato di Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli [1953-1958]) tento di affrontare in un’ottica diversa l’episcopato roncalliano a Venezia. Anzitutto, cerco di rileggere le fonti edite, che comprendono generi diversi (appunti giornalieri delle Agende, discorsi pubblici, corrispondenze private, interventi sugli organi di stampa diocesani), in una prospettiva di ricostruzione del contesto, individuando maggiori dettagli sugli orientamenti del patriarca e del suo clero di fronte a una situazione assai complessa. Nel lavoro, le dinamiche della diocesi veneziana vengono intrecciate con quelle della Chiesa Cattolica e della storia civile italiana, registrando i reciproci influssi. L’episcopato roncalliano a Venezia, in sostanza, è considerato con un’attenzione specifica che non lo appiattisce a semplice tappa verso il pontificato giovanneo, ma – soprattutto nelle prime due parti, che muovono dall’ampliamento patriarcale del 1927 – lo colloca in una prospettiva di storia lunga in grado di valutarne continuità e discontinuità pastorali. Per quanto riguarda la documentazione inedita, invece, tre sono le questioni principali che emergono e che costituiscono gli assi portanti di questa ricerca: 1) Lo sviluppo di Mestre, le questioni che la nuova situazione economico-sociale solleva in vista dell’evangelizzazione e le iniziative dispiegate dalla Diocesi lagunare dagli anni Trenta agli anni Cinquanta: dalla costituzione di nuove parrocchie a alla costruzione di nuove chiese, dall’assistenza alle varie forme di povertà alla presenza pacificatrice negli aspri conflitti sociali, dal rilancio delle forme della pietà popolare al dialogo con le differenti realtà culturali. 2) La sfida costituita dalla “questione operaia” di Porto Marghera per la Chiesa veneziana: essa prende forma in un contesto che vede il graduale spostamento occupazionale dalla campagna alla città, il progressivo predominio del Porto industriale sulle fabbriche lagunari; tale questione assume connotazioni che superano gli aspetti lavorativi e coinvolgono dimensioni più ampie, ideologiche e culturali. Tutto ciò sollecita la Diocesi lagunare a intraprendere nuove forme di azione pastorale. A ciò si aggiunge la tela politica veneziana nei primi anni Cinquanta: essa offre una prospettiva importante per cogliere la peculiarità delle scelte pastorali di Roncalli. Per un verso, essa riflette gli orientamenti presenti a livello nazionale, come la forte mobilitazione del laicato cattolico a sostegno della politica democristiana; d’altra parte, proprio a Venezia ha luogo il primo laboratorio politico di centrosinistra, che poi costituirà un modello per altre realtà italiane, locali e nazionali. 3) Le linee pastorali adottate dal patriarca Roncalli, tra continuità e innovazione, sempre alla ricerca di un equilibrio tra le pressioni della Santa Sede e della Conferenza Episcopale del Triveneto e la necessità di tener conto della peculiare situazione veneziana. In questo modo, la ricerca ha la pretesa di ottenere un duplice risultato: da una parte, mostra come la Chiesa veneziana sia un osservatorio privilegiato per comprendere meglio le scelte pastorali che in quegli anni l’intera Chiesa italiana – pur in modi e tempi diversi – sta maturando di fronte ai profondi cambiamenti sociali ed economici; d’altra parte, offre una chiave di lettura più affinata e meno apologetica dell’episcopato di Roncalli, filtrandolo attraverso i processi e le questioni della diocesi veneziana.

Abstract:

Partendo dall'esperienza di Citispyce, con la presente tesi si intende analizzare la riqualifica dei cosiddetti "buchi neri", spazi vuoti o inutilizzati, attraverso esperienze create dal basso da parte di singoli o gruppi di cittadini nei quartieri di Mestre e Marghera. Dopo aver introdotto il concetto di innovazione sociale e di partecipazione attiva dei cittadini, si focalizzano le implicazioni presenti nei processi di riqualificazione delle aree dismesse. L'obiettivo è quello di analizzare i progetti di recupero degli spazi urbani di Mestre e Marghera, mettendo a confronto le diverse esperienze sulla base di alcuni indicatori emersi durante lo studio dei casi, tra cui la durata nel tempo, la partecipazione dei cittadini, i rapporti con l’ente pubblico, l'organizzazione interna e gli aspetti innovativi. Le osservazioni elaborate durante l'analisi dei progetti permettono di valutare quali pratiche presenti sul territorio rimangono organizzazioni effimere, quali hanno i requisiti per diventare esperienze innovative consolidate e quali rischi comporta una loro eventuale istituzionalizzazione.

Abstract:

Carrefours où convergent les flux maritimes et terrestres ; lieux où s’échange, se distribue et parfois se transforme. Au fil des siècles, les ports ont subi des modifications et des extensions qui ont réinterprété ou étendu leur rôle de lien entre la terre et la mer. Au lendemain du XXe siècle, le développement des technologies navales et les progrès de la navigation ont conduit à une plus grande capacité de chargement et à une vitesse plus élevée des navires, tandis que dans le même temps, la localisation des industries devenait un sujet fondamental de la géographie économique. Le port a ainsi assumé de nouvelles fonctions complexes et de grandes installations industrielles ont été implantées sur ses quais. Porto Marghera et Fos-sur-Mer sont deux exemples de ports industriels en Méditerranée. Ils ont été créés respectivement au début et à la fin de la période de cette recherche. L’enquête concerne l’évolution du complexe portuaire du point de vue technique et de l’infrastructure et l’impact que cela a eu sur la relation ville-port. Dans les deux cas, nous observons un processus de territorialisation du complexe portuaire et, en même temps, une dissociation progressive du centre urbain d’origine. La réflexion qui en résulte concerne la valeur testimoniale de ces énormes organismes, protagonistes de l’histoire contemporaine de la Méditerranée – et plus particulièrement de Venise et de Marseille au XXe siècle; ABSTRACT: Two industrial ports of the Mediterranean in the 20th century: Porto Marghera and Fos-sur-Mer 1917-1968 - Hubs where maritime and land flows converge; where exchange, distribution and sometimes transformation take place. Over the centuries, ports have undergone modifications and extensions that have reinterpreted or extended their role as a link between land and sea. In the aftermath of the 20th century, the development of naval technologies and the progress of navigation led to a greater loading capacity and higher speed of ships, while at the same time the location of industries became a fundamental subject of economic geography. The port thus took on new complex functions and large industrial plants were established on its quays. Porto Marghera and Fos-sur-Mer are two examples of industrial ports in the Mediterranean. They were established at the beginning and at the end of the research period respectively. The investigation concerns the evolution of the port complex from a technical and infrastructural point of view and the impact this had on the city-port relationship. In both cases, we observe a process of territorialization of the port complex and, at the same time, a progressive dissociation from the original urban centre. The resulting reflection concerns the testimonial value of these enormous organisms, protagonists in contemporary history of the Mediterranean – and especially in the history of Venice and Marseille in the 20th century. AbstractOrigami, the art of paper folding, was developed several centuries ago in Japan and nowhas aworldwide following. In the late twentieth century the mathematical theory of origami was developed. Its foundation is a set of seven axioms, the Huzita–Hatori axioms, named after Humiaki Huzita who formalized the first six axioms andKoshiro Hatori who found the seventh. Jacques Justin published all seven axioms several years before Huzita and Hatori, and Margherita P. Beloch formulated the sixth axiom in 1936. Nevertheless, the axioms as known as the Huzita-Hatori axioms.

Abstract:

Eastern Liguria, a sometimes harsh and inhospitable place, encompasses some of the most beautiful landscape realities of the region, thanks to the presence of the sea and of an unexpected scenery. In some cases, land and water are connected, clearly showing the challenges that Man had to face in order to dominate Nature. In these cases, these forms of anthropization can turn their constraints into potentials. In this context, in a gulf such as the one between Rapallo and Portofino, outposts arose as observers to protect the neighboring territory, characterized by docks and, consequently, a suitable area for trade and for pirate incursions. For these reasons, military-style architectural structures arose, both defensive and of sighting, depending on the building site, then, in the sixteenth century coordinated and transformed into a real defensive system, by the will of the Republic of Genoa. Here, then, we can find the castle of Rapallo, the tower of Saint Michael of Pagana, the Castle of Santa Margherita, the Castle of Paraggi and finally that of Portofino, each one with its own identity and events, but connectable to the others, if only for the territorial belonging to an extremely particular site as for organicity and homogeneity. This is what the study of the Castle of Paraggi underlines, as it was built on the cliff overlooking the sea that has enjoyed a “double life” based on highlighting the latent diametrically opposed potential: born for the defense of the land from sea incursions, later on it was converted into a residence, conceptually transforming its position from a dominating into a reserved one, from an outpost on the sea clearly visible, to a place hidden on the land, from public to private. Over the centuries, the change in the function and life of the castle, has therefore been introducing changes to the facies and the composition of its appearance through the different stages of its evolution.
