Abstract:
The essay is an exploration of how the character Mary Magdalene is portrayed in a selection of four bible films, so called hagiopics. The purpose of this essay is to compare the films with each other and to study if the portraying of her distinguishes in a comparison. Is there variations of her character in the four films and if that´s the case, how has it been expressed.  The films in this study extend over a period of almost 80 years (1927-2004). Do the films differ in a historical comparison by how they portrait her? This is a film analytic, qualitative, comparing study in the science of religion. The results show that the portraying of Mary Magdalene differs in some ways in a comparison but the overall picture of her remains the same. She is portrayed either as a prostitute or a former prostitute who asks Jesus for forgiveness and finds salvation. The results shows that the way she has been portrayed in the popular culture have given her a roll that doesn´t exist in the Gospels. It seems as if it has become normative to portray her in a one dimensional way in the popular culture. The results show that the picture of her as a former prostitute in hagiopics seems to have become consolidated.

Svensson, Amelie. "Så föddes min Maria Magdalena : En analys av Marianne Fredrikssons bok Enligt Maria Magdalena ur ett litteraturvetenskpligt genusperspektiv." Thesis, Högskolan i Halmstad, Akademin för lärande, humaniora och samhälle, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hh:diva-27987.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The study aims to describe and analyze the image of Mary Magdalene as expressed in the French artwork from 1400 and 1600s that this study deals with. The study also examines the historical context in order to find explanations for why the images of Mary Magdalene have changed. In the study Erwin Panofsky’s iconographic method is used to analyze the artworks and finding their underlying meaning. Delimitations are made that only works of art made by French artists from the 1400 and 1600s are analyzed and delimitations are also made that Mary Magdalene will act on her own in the works of art. The study relies on David Morgan's theory of how religious pictures function. Morgan emphasizes that images can be used as leverage to reach out with various messages. With Morgan’s assertions in mind, the study examines how the Catholic Church's position of power is changing in accordance with the Council of Trent from 1545 to 1563. The Council of Trent result that the Catholic Church changed its view on how people should choose the Catholic Church in the new Protestant faith orientation. This implies that the image of the saintly Mary Magdalene changed to better fit into the Catholic Church's new position. The study has concluded that the works of art depicting Mary Magdalene in 1400 and the 1600s move from manifesting a physical penance to a more inward and spiritual redemption through Panofsky’s method.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The primary aim of h s research is to evaluate crime and its effect on people from a Reformative perspective. Furthermore to develop a social work support model, according to which co-ordinated services can be provide to all people that are affected by crime in the Northwest Province as an exemplar of a rural community. The thesis consists of three sections. Section A includes in the first place a reference to the actuality of the research. It is namely clear that the level of crime in South Africa, in some instances the highest in the world, requires extensive support for the survivors of these criminal acts. Therefore, the research aim, as given above, lead to four specific objectives. Section A also explains the research methodology. The research was structured according to the Intervention research model within the qualitative research approach. Data was collected by means of a literature study, comparison of the systems of victim support in the Netherlands and South Africa and interviews using a semi-structured interview schedule. Section B consists of the four articles that form the report about the research outcomes. Each article is a report about a particular sub-project of the research and each has, as self-contained units, an own research aim, research method and report Each of these is linked with the central aim, objectives and content of the over-arching research project. The four articles are: In Article 1, 'Crime and its impact on people - a Christian perspective', crime is turned down and it is argued that the survivor of crime should be cared for within the Biblical perspective. Article 2, 'A comparison between the support systems for victims of crime in the Netherlands and South Africa', provided clear guidelines for support systems in developing communities. The formation of a h e support network and the provisioning of compensation to victims are some of these guidelines. In Article 3, 'An investigation into support available to survivors of crime in the North-West Province' it was found that a lack of specialized and professional services is present as well as the lack of co-ordination in the provisioning of the support services. An effective support system of professional services is of the utmost importance and resources, especially h a n d resources, are required to develop an attainable and sustainable support system. The fourth article 'A model for support services available to crime affected people in the North-West Province' contains the model that was developed for support to crime affected people in a rural and deep rural area of our country. The model can be illustrated by a network consisting of four panels, each including particular institutions providing particular services. In Section C a summary of the findings and recommendations of the full research project is provided. Some short-comings, based on specific restraints, are explained and the contribution of the study is provided.

Abstract:
The Foundation of the Good Shepherd was set up by Mother Marie-Euphrasie in the XIX!h century. The specificmission of the order was to take care of the poor, and particularly of women and children, to ease their distress, givethem support and encourage them to make their way back into society. ln the UK, the Good Shepherd institutes were known as Magdalen Asylums, for the biblical figure of Mary Magdalene, a repentant sinner who became a disciple of Christ; the vocation of these Magdalen institutions was to shelter prostitutes and single mothers. They quickly came to specialise in laundry work- a symbolic task, as these women had above all to wash away their sins. During the reign of Queen Victoria, puritanism became more severe, and the figure of Mary Magdalena came to embody the "whore", the "fallen" woman. Three Acts of Parliament were passed to curb the expansion of prostitution and venereal diseases. Il was only in the late 1990s that voices were raised to denounce the abuse and ill-treatment committed in some of these institutions, voices that were soon picked up and amplified in a number of films, and in particular Peter Mullan's The Magdalena Sisters. The aim of this study is to understand why such things happened, and to study the role played by the media in the process of their exposure and to what extent they can be said to make History

Van, der Spuy Maria Magdalena. "The development of a strategic plan for Relationship Mail (Pty) Ltd / Maria Magdalena van der Spuy." Thesis, North-West University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1939.

Full text
Abstract:
Relationship Mail makes use of the information technology (IT) sector as the foundation for the Relationship Mail product, but the actual output is a physical product in the form of gifts, cards and letters. Relationship Mail solves relationship marketing problems for organisations, by enabling them to keep in touch with customers with a physical and personal product. The service, however, is system generated, making it easy to use for customers. The main objective of this study was to formulate a strategic plan for Relationship Mail and to present recommendations to successfully implement the plan. In order to address the main objective, a questionnaire with open ended questions was constructed and completed by all the employees and management of Relationship Mail. The questionnaire also supplied a picture of how the employees perceive Relationship Mail's current strategies, and if they are even aware of a strategy within the organisation at the moment. The questionnaire was followed up by brainstorming sessions among management to formulate a strategic plan. The result of the questionnaire and brainstorming sessions was a SWOT analysis, identifying the driving forces and an analysis of Porter's five forces model. These analyses were used to identify the key areas where Relationship Mail needs to grow, and according to those areas, a vision and mission statement was formulated, and strategic objectives developed. The following strategic objectives were developed: • To develop the leading relationship marketing software in South Africa and in the world. • Realizing market penetration opportunities. • Achieving sales forecasts and targets. • Optimising product and service intentions. • To ensure continued growth and profitability of Relationship Mail. This main objective is to break even by March 2008. • Expand into the international market in two years' time. To complement the strategic objectives, the following strategies were developed to fulfil the objectives: • Obtain the SPII Grant and use the funds to create a compelling value proposition for software system companies in the likes of Spotlight and CRM, and to continuously expand our product offering. • Build strong brand recognition and leverage the brand equities affiliated with Relationship Mail. • Build the sales force to increase exposure to various industries. • Provide a high level of personalised service. • Perform a situation analysis and identify the financial need within the organisation. • Identify suitable business partners in the identified countries. The above objectives and strategies were built in to action plans, and in the study, the relevant actions, with the persons available and time frames are supplied. The strategic plan provides a high-level view of all of the actions required from Relationship Mail within the next year, and the different department heads will have to take the given strategies further and build a plan for each one of the areas identified for growth. Relationship Mail is a young organisation and is going through a rapid growth phase at the moment. Investment capital is extremely important at this stage to enable growth for the organisation. To ensure continuous growth and the implementation of the completed strategy, the organisation is in need of investment capital. This study will hopefully serve as a foundation for investment capitalists to see the financial potential within Relationship Mail.

Van, der Walt Maria Magdalena. "The concept "beneficial use" in South African water law reform / by Maria Magdalena van der Walt." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/5537.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept "beneficial use" plays a pivotal role in South African water law reform. It forms the foundation of the mechanism to make water use rights available for the reform of the allocation of water use entitlements. The mechanism involves that water use rights that were unexercised in the two years before the promulgation of the National Water Act 36 of 1998 are not defined as existing lawful water uses. Where the concept "beneficial use" is utilised to cancel unexercised water use rights, it can cause potential hardship. Some people whose rights have been cancelled believe that they should be able to rely on the property clause in section 25 of the Constitution of 1996 to either have the legislation declared unconstitutional or to demand compensation. Section 25 of the Constitution of 1996 prohibits the arbitrary deprivation of property and states that property may only be expropriated for a public purpose or in the public interest, subject to compensation. Section 25(4) states, however, that the public interest includes the nation's commitment to land reform and to reforms to bring about equitable access to all South Africa's natural resources. It is clear from this that reforms to bring about access to water are allowed by the property clause. One of the main questions discussed in this thesis was whether section 32 of the National Water Act 36 of 1998 that made more water available for distribution for reform purposes by cancelling unexercised water user rights, leads to an arbitrary deprivation or an expropriation of property. It should be noted that section 32 of the National Water Act did not constitute an arbitrary deprivation of property, as sufficient reason exists for water law reform. A possible constitutional challenge based on the lack of due process of law because of the retrospective operation of the section may possibly be averted because of the existence of section 33 of the National Water Act. Section 33 of the Act mitigates hardship by allowing unexercised water uses to be declared existing lawful water uses in certain circumstances where a good reason for the non–exercise of the water use right existed. Even in cases where section 33 does not prevent section 32 from being regarded as an arbitrary deprivation of property because there still was not a proper procedure, the government will probably be able to show that the limitation in section 32 is, in terms of section 36(1) of the Constitution of 1996, reasonable and justifiable in an open and democratic society. Despite the fact that section 25(1) prohibits arbitrary deprivations, it does not prohibit the government from regulating competing rights to use water even though some people may be negatively affected by the regulation. Because the Minister merely acts as public trustee of the nation's water resources on behalf of the national government in terms section 3(1) of the National Water Act, it cannot be claimed that the government acquired the cancelled water use rights. A claim that compensation should be paid for an expropriation of property will therefore not succeed. Compensation is only payable in terms of section 22(6) and section 22(7) of the National Water Act 36 of 1998 for a loss of existing water entitlements, such as existing lawful water uses or existing licences. A court should thus consider interpreting section 25 by providing for compensation where an individual was unfairly burdened and was therefore denied the protection of the equality clause in section 9 of the Constitution when his unexercised water use rights were cancelled by section 32. The concept "beneficial use" currently restricts the content of the water use entitlement existing in terms of section 4 of the National Water Act 36 of 1998. The loss of the entitlement when inter alia a licence for an existing lawful water use is refused, is not protected by the payment of compensation when water is used in an unfair or disproportionate manner, because such utilisation would not be regarded to be beneficial use. It became apparent that in terms of the current water law dispensation in South Africa, the possibility of compensation for an amendment of a water use licence and the refusal of a licence for an existing lawful water use implies that a water use entitlement is a right in property. The fact that section 22(7) of the National Water Act states that the amount of the compensation must be determined in accordance with section 25(3) of the Constitution implies that the legislature also recognises that a water use entitlement is constitutional property. Section 22(7) of the National Water Act underlines the basic premises of the National Water Act by subjecting the amount of the compensation that is payable to the same limitations that restrict the entitlement to use the water. The stipulations of section 22(7) draw the attention to the fact that the exercise of both existing lawful water uses and water use licences as rights in property is subject to basic principles of the National Water Act such as the Reserve and the concepts "public trusteeship" and "beneficial use" of the water resources. The fact that compensation is only payable when there has been severe prejudice to the economic viability of an undertaking implies that water use entitlements have to be exercised at the time of the application for the compensation to be payable. The concept "beneficial use" – in the sense that a water use must not be wasteful or polluting and in the sense that only water use entitlements that are being exercised are protected – thus restricts the water use entitlement as a property right. During the research, American and Australian water law reform and their interpretation of their property clauses were compared to water law reform in South Africa and the South African property clause. Furthermore, Australian policy to encourage more beneficial water use by the trade in water entitlements or allocations, was also discussed. South Africans will likely in future be encouraged to trade in water use entitlements or allocations. The objective with allowing the trade in water use entitlements or allocations is to encourage people to rather use water for uses with a high value instead of uses with a lower value. In this way the concept "beneficial use" may be broadened to include water allocation or entitlement trading. However, it was argued that a disproportionate impact on third parties would mean that water allocation or entitlement trading would in some cases not be regarded as beneficial use anymore.

Abstract:
Sweden has a long history of Lutheran Christian influences, manifested spatially by the presence of churches in the build environment. In contrast, Sweden is also described as one of the world’s most secular countries. These secular individual’s experience of these churches is not well explored in geography of religion. Therefore, this study’s aim is to investigate what shapes non-religious individuals’ place attachment to religious spaces. To reveal this, the study is based on transcriptions from a Transect Walk with 12 non-religious individuals at Maria Magdalena church in Södermalm, Stockholm. These narratives are viewed through a place attachment framework together with theories of religion, sacred space and secularization, to answer the research question: What affects non-religious young individuals’ place attachment towards a sacred place? The attachment was formed by the subjective mosaic of combinations, which revealed that churches in general are instrumental venues to obtain the goal of participating in temporary ceremonies. In turn, it was affected by the subjects’ memories, connection to cultural Christianity, lack of religious attachment and the church as a unique place. This contributes to the field by revealing what affects place attachment of non-religious individuals to sacred spaces in a Swedish context.

With the discover of the Nag Hammadi´s library and the gnostics writings, the Early Christianity studies had found a new information source, and specially, of ideas. The conception of a monolithic christianity in the second century, has been overpassed, in face of the variety of thoughts that the christian gnosticism brings on itself. Different ways of living the christian faith, has been found on this writings, like the gospel of Mary, who takes the name of a enigmatic character of Eartly Christian moviment, Mary Magdalene. This work intents to verify the constitucional elements of this new way of living the christian praxis, including the possibility of feminine actuation. The social role of women on christianity, brings on itself a history of silences and contests, exclusion and participation. With the assistance of the feminist moviment and it´s development on the human sciences, gender studies and feminist theology, we search to reconstruct this history, bringing to the surface, the christian women´s experiences on their path to the achievement of their faith.

Abstract:
LANGUAGE PLANNING: THE PRESENT SITUATION AND THE FUTURE OF LANGUAGE PLANNING FOR AFRIKAANS IN A MULTI-LINGUAL SOUTH AFRICA. The hypothesis underlying this study is the following: The fact that the position of Afrikaans is under siege at present can be attributed, among others, to the years of uncoordinated, strategyless involvement with language by anyone who felt the urge to do so. In order to prove this hypothesis to be either true or false, the broad objective with this study was posited as being the determination of the status of language planning for Afrikaans against the background of the theory of language planning. In order to achieve this objective, the following specific objectives were striven after: To determine what methodological principles underlie the science of language planning; by way of empirical study to make a situation analysis of the status of language planning activities for Afrikaans; to measure the practice of micro level and macro level planning for Afrikaans against language planning theory in order to determine to what extent the theory and practice tie in with or differ from each other; and by way of a conclusion to make recommendations with regard to a possible language plan for Afrikaans. In chapter 2 the theory of language planning is discussed. On the basis of certain distinguishable elements the following working definition of language planning can be accepted: Language planning is a future-directed, language problem-solving action which manipulates a purposeful language change in accordance with a set of objectives and which, in the course of this process of change, keeps cognizance of the sociocultural environment in which the language problem manifests itself. It becomes clear that language planning is a scientific sub discipline with strong fundamental and methodological bases. When language planning activities are robbed of this fundamental aspect, there is the danger that language planning can be used as an instrument to effect mere social or political change. It is therefore imperative that any language planning project should answer to this theoretical demand. In order to measure the language planning activity for Afrikaans against language planning theory, it is necessary to do a situational analysis of the status of actual and putative language planning for Afrikaans. The situational analysis of the status of language planning for Afrikaans is given in chapter 3. In chapter 4 the micro level language planning activities for Afrikaans are measured against language planning theory. It emerges clearly from an analysis of the activities of organizations and institutions that language promotion does enjoy the attention of certain institutions. The problem is, however, that these activities are occurring in a loose, unstructured and uncoordinated fashion, so that one finds both overlap and duplication. This planless promotion of Afrikaans cannot be called language planning. In chapter 5 the macro level language planning situation in South Africa is studied. At the outset an outline is provided of the applicable macro level language planning theory, following which it is applied to the South African situation. It becomes clear from the research that true macro level language planning activities for Afrikaans (and in actual fact for all languages in South Africa) have not yet become reality. The recommendation that eventually has to be made is that the government has to enter into the discussion on language in South Africa because a language policy can achieve little until it attains some measure of official status. By way of conclusion it can be said that, although one can observe traces of language planning theory in the activities of various organizations or institutions which are working towards the status of Afrikaans, one cannot really speak of true language planning. This uncoordinated, strategy-less language involvement (which clearly does not comply with the demands of the theory of language planning) has the result that there is now an undignified scramble in progress about the future of Afrikaans. In order to execute the fourth objective, recommendations are made in chapters 6 and 7 with regard to language planning for Afrikaans in a multi-lingual South African society. The study is concluded with a preamble to a possible language plan for Afrikaans.

Abstract:
This study was undertaken in an attempt to establish the cognitive development of student teachers and to determine the impact of Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment programme on the development and/or improvement of the cognitive skills of student teachers. A literature study was undertaken to highlight the importance and nature of thinking abilities necessary for learning, as well as the role of Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment programme in this regard. Explanatory mixed method research by means of testing, as well as a narrative analysis was employed. An empirical study with a pre-experimental research design in which intervention research was incorporated was conducted over a period of twelve weeks with twenty four second-year student teachers majoring in Mathematics. The students were randomly assigned to two groups. A pretest with the DAT-L test was administered to both groups to determine the extent of their thinking skills development. After the pre-test group 1 was exposed to intervention with the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment programme for a period of six weeks in an attempt to develop and/or improve thinking skills. After the intervention program group 1 was tested again with the DAT-L test in order to determine if the intervention programme had developed and/or improved thinking skills or not. After this, group 2 was exposed to intervention with the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment programme for a period of six weeks. After the six week period both groups were tested again with the DAT-L test to determine the impact of the intervention programme on the thinking skills of group 2 and to establish what happened to the thinking skills of group 1 during the period in which they were not exposed to the intervention. In support of the data gained through the test results, participants were requested to write up their perceptions of and experiences related to the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment programme in a narrative. The narratives were analysed and the results were utilized to support the data obtained with the quantitative study. Results indicated that room exists for improving the thinking skills of student teachers and that Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment programme possesses the latent potential to improve and develop thinking skills. The study is concluded with recommendations on how to develop and improve thinking skills.

Abstract:
In his most popular prose work, Mary Magdalens Funeral Teares (1591), English Jesuit Robert Southwell adapts the Mary Magdalene tradition by incorporating the meditative practices of St. Ignatius Loyola coupled with the Petrarchan language of poetry. Thus, he creates a prose work that ministered to Catholic souls, appealed to Protestant audiences, and initiated the literature of tears in England. Southwell readapts the traditional image of Mary Magdalene for a Catholic Early Modern audience by utilizing the techniques of Jesuit meditation, which later flourished in the weeper texts of Richard Crashaw and George Herbert. His vividly imagined scenes also employ the Petrarchan and Ovidian language of longing and absence and coincide with both traditional and mystic early church writers such as Bernard and Augustine. Through this combination, Southwell’s Marie Magdalens Funeral Teares resonated with Catholics deprived of both ministry and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. These contributions solidify Southwell’s place as a pivotal figure in the religious and literary contexts of Early Modern England.

The objective of this study is to research women s leadership in the primitive Christianity, starting from the figure of Mary Magdalene in Jo 20,1-18. The exegetic, view as well as research on women s situation in the first century, show: a) Women that followed Jesus were part of the disciples group, and Mary Magdalene had strong influence among them in the community; b) she accompanied Jesus since the beginning of his ministry in Galilee, and her leadership and authority in primitive Christianity conferred her the disciple status c) the Pericope that is studied has as a fundamental concept the conflict of leaderships among three traditions: John s, the Peter s and Mary Magdalene s. Comparing the Pericopes of John with certain Gnostic writings, its noticeable that in these writings Mary Magdalene s leadership is manifested with stronger intensity, and the conflict with Peter is more accentuated. She is considered the Master of the disciples. The research not only rescues the leader figure of Christianity, but also shows, via the exegesis, the process of the cooptation of women s leadership.(AU)

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that in the Christian occident the image of Maria Magdalen, a well-known biblical character underwent some changes throughout the centuries. The aim was to de-characterize the apostolic work carried out by women, and that contributed to build the identity of the female gender, marked by low self-esteem, and as a consequence, by weak empowerment. Aiming at recreating the path of the construction of this image, the author researched selected fundamental texts of Christianity, biblical literature, apocryphal literature as well as the patristic literature, using interpretation keys advocated by the feministic hermeneutics, which allows us to read gender as an analytic category of relationships built on the basis of culture. It was possible to ascertain that, in Maria Magdalen the female archetype was created, the biblical ideal that had to be transported to the concrete aspects of daily life, an apostle whole importance was minimized by the authors of the Canon.
