Buckles, Christina Marie. "The transnational feminist literature of Helena Maria Viramontes." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2012. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3269.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I am interested in transnational feminist scholarship and dialogue. Through close readings of Helena Maria Viramontes's texts, I place her writing in conversation with several transnational feminist scholars and themes. I begin with home, a frequently discussed topic within transnational feminism, as the experiences of diasporic and migrant populations challenge the notion of home. I locate the multiple homes presented in Viramontes's texts, arguing that these homes are unreliable spaces for their residents. I then consider male characters and masculinity in Viramontes's stories, as these men significantly influence the homes of women. In Viramontes's later texts, some of these characters support the women in their lives, as well as embrace the multiplicity of masculinity. I also explore invisibility and hypervisibility, two themes which figure prominently within transnational feminism and Viramontes's texts. Viramontes makes visible women, workers, and youth, challenging their invisibility and hypervisibility. In my analysis, I include Viramontes's two novels, Under the Feet of Jesus (1995) and Their Dogs Came With Them (2007), as well as two short stories, "Growing" (1983) and "The Jumping Bean" (1992). By analyzing these works, which were published over a period of twenty four years, we can more intricately see Viramontes's exploration of transnational feminist themes.

Burford, Arianne. "Between Women: Alliances and Divisions in American Indian, Mexican American, and Anglo American Literatures of Protest to Colonialism." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195349.

Abstract:
Between Women: Alliances and Divisions in American Indian, Mexican American, and Anglo American Literatures of Protest to Colonialism investigates nineteenth- and twentieth-century women writers' negotiation of women's rights discourses. This project examines the split between nineteenth-century women's rights groups and the Equal Rights Association to assess how American Indian, Mexican American, Anglo women, and, more recently, Chicana writers provide theoretical insights for new directions in feminisms. This study is grounded historically in order to learn from the past and continue efforts toward "decolonizing feminisms," to borrow a phrase from Chandra Mohanty. To that end, current feminist theories about alliances and solidarity are linked to ways that writers intervene in feminisms to simultaneously imagine solidarity against white male colonialist violence and object to racism on the part of Anglo women. Like all the writers in this study, Sarah Winnemucca's Life Among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims (1883) challenges Anglo women to not be complicit with Anglo male colonialist violence. Winnemucca's testimony illuminates the history of alliances between Anglo and Native women and current debates amongst various Native women activists regarding feminism. Between Women traces how Anglo American writer Helen Hunt Jackson's Ramona (1884) protests effects of U.S. colonialism on Luiseno people and her negotiation of feminisms compared with Winnemucca's writing and Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton's The Squatter and the Don (1885) and Who Would Have Thought It? (1872), novels that protest the effects of U.S. colonialism on Mexican Americans, particularly women. It then compares Ruiz de Burton's writing to Helena Maria Viramontes's Under the Feet of Jesus (1995) and Cherrie Moraga's Heroes and Saints (1994), texts that acknowledge the difficulties of forming alliances between women in the context of exploitation, pesticide poisoning of Chicanas/os, and border policies. The epilogue points to Evelina Lucero's Night Sky, Morning Star (2000), demonstrating how an understanding of the history that Winnemucca engages elucidates American Indian literature in the twenty-first century. By looking deeply at how nineteenth-century conflicts effect us in the present, scholars and activists might better assess tactics for feminisms in the twenty-first century that enact an anti-colonialist feminist praxis.

Abstract:
The analytical part is presented in two major sections : a historical and technical introduction, followed by the study of the artist's work, wich consists in two phases : the first one (before and during the second world war) covers the origins and the formative years, toward a redefinition of perspective, and the years of exile in Brazil, marked by a return to realism ; the second one, much longer (the post-war period), could not be patterned according to any classical approach (chronological, biographical or icinographical) and is arranged therefore following synchronicity themes wich highlight the various aesthetic concers of the artist wich underly different creative moods, sometimes in contrast, marked by intervals of several moths and even years. The concluding section aims to show the artist's main ideological pursuits suggested by close observation of her paintings, and reveals that Vieira da Silva's creative independance is firmly anchored in the complexities of her times. The autor's aim in establishing the descriptive catalogue has been to give for each number a bibliography and a list of exhibitions, and to pursue this method as exhaustively as possible for all Vieira da Silva's work, on the basis of a careful search of all available archives (prosopography)

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze selected short stories and the novel Under the Feet of Jesus by Chicana writer Helena María Viramontes, focusing on her appropriation of Aztec myths and Mexican legends whose protagonists are feminine figures, whether of historical or mythical origin, such as La Malinche, La Llorona and The Hungry Woman. This critical re-view of the past plays a vital role for real and fictional Chicanas when facing patriarchal, colonial and neocolonial domination. Due to the complexity brought by the lack of linearity in the narrative, both in the short stories and in the novel, a brief analysis of the narrative strategies became necessary to show how these strategies are intertwined with the fragmented presentation of the migrant workers lives. It became equally indispensable to examine other narrative practices adopted by the author, namely, focalization, deconstruction, simultaneity and juxtaposition, as well as the link she establishes in Under the Feet of Jesus between reading, identity and effective human agency in order to achieve social changes

Abstract:
This thesis, by analyzing the memorialistic work of Maria Helena Cardoso, seeks to explain the reflection of the ramifications that its route can generate: the role of memory in autobiographical texts, oblivion, fiction, the construction of the autobiographical I, identity and difference. It investigates the many faces of objectivity/subjectivity, in a game of perceptions played in the field of language, clarifying its importance as the responsible for the images which are offered to the thoughts they recall. It conceptualizes the triad author-narrator-character, demonstrating the necessity of identity between them and considering the possibility of uniting the autobiographical and fictional, through games, combinations, contracts or agreements. It analyzes the transformation occurred in the memory on Cardosos books, which starts in the traditional format of autobiography, goes thru a more elaborated diary, and ends in the form of a false romance. It demonstrates the contribution of Maria Helena Cardoso to Brazilian literature, which makes each one of her texts, a strong presence in the world of its readers.

The theme of this masters dissertation is the joint study of Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes´s work, artists who were a couple, active in the context of the modern École de Paris, having lived exiled in Brazil during the 1940s, due to the Second World War. Vieira da Silva´s work focuses on the borders of pictorial dialogue between time and space or, more specifically, on the dialectic tension between the construction and the deconstruction of perspective. In turn, Arpad Szenes has a recognized series of works where he portrays the wife on everyday moments, including occasions that she dedicates herself to creative activities. The poetics‟ duet undertaken by the couple, beyond promoting a “metalinguistic” questioning of painting between traditional and modern, allows us to weave new meanings for the interface art/life. By portraying Vieira da Silva in her atelier moments, Arpad Szenes translates the artist´s plastic thinking under his gaze, on the creation of a “myth” that retells his story with his wife, enabling the construction of a shared painting. Such sharing originates on the dialogue between the couple´s works, but it is reinforced on the poets´ productions, critics and writers, what constitutes a circle of artistic-cultural acquaintanceship around the two artists, in the shapes of modernism´s sociability. In this rich exchange of experiences and productions, the art reveals its best interface, by the appreciation of everyday instant. A scenario is set up where space´s materiality joins memory‟s subjective temporality, from where Vieira da Silva and Szenes´ work emerges as an exemplar case.

Abstract:
This study attempts to demonstrate the singular synthesis of influences and compositional techniques represented by the work Cartas Celestes (Celestial Maps) for piano by José Antonio Rezende de Almeida Prado (born in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil, on February 8, 1943). Although Almeida Prado, clearly one of the more influential Brazilian composers, wrote a vast repertoire for all genres, his piano works are fundamental throughout his compositional career. This significant body of work allows one to track his evolution as a composer and to define the changing characteristics of his style within the different phases of his trajectory. This study will examine Cartas Celestes Volumes IVI, Almeida Prado's most important work for piano solo, with particular attention to Volume I. This document will also discuss "Transtonalism," the "System of Organized Resonances," and the Twenty-Four chords, all created by him. The examination of Cartas Celestes Volume I will focus on Almeida Prado's innovative compositional devices and techniques. In addition, this study will investigate the most important aspects of Almeida Prado's music, including timbre exploration and the use of the piano with emphasis on touch, attacks, pedaling, pianistic gestures, and technique.

Jansen, van Rensburg Helena Maria. "Goodness-of-fit tests based on new characterizations of the exponential distribution / Helena Maria Jansen van Rensburg." Thesis, North-West University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1095.

Abstract:
The exponential density is probably one of the most widely used distributions in practice. Due to its importance, many goodness-of-fit tests for exponentiality have been proposed in the literature. The objectives of this research are as follow: 0 to study the importance of the exponential distribution in practical problems, 0 to investigate alternative classes of distributions to the exponential distribution, 0 to present an overview of existing characterizations of the exponential distribution, 0 to evaluate existing goodness-of-fit tests for exponentiality, 0 to develop new goodness-of-fit tests for exponentiality, and 0 to compare the proposed goodness-of-fit tests to existing tests by means of relative efficiencies and simulation studies of the power of the tests. To achieve these objectives, we begin with a brief discussion of the exponential distribution and other parametric families of life distributions, followed by a summary of six well-known nonparametric classes of alternative distributions. A comprehensive literature study of existing characterizations of the exponential distribution and existing goodness-of fit tests for exponentiality are presented. We then propose and prove two new characterizations of the exponential distribution in the class of NBUE life distributions based on properties of order statistics. These characterizations are used to develop a new class of goodness-of-fit tests for exponentiality. The tests are shown to be consistent and the limiting distributions under the null and alternative hypotheses are derived. We show that the new class of test statistics includes two statistics which arc equivalent to the well-known Gini test statistic (Gail and Gastwirth 1978a) and the coefficient of variation test statistic (Borges, Proschan and Rodrigucs 1984). The newly proposed tests are compared to existing goodness-of-fit tests by means of Pitman and approximate Bahadur relative efficiencies. Monte Carlo studies are conducted to compare the various tests with regard to power for small and moderate sample sizes against a wide range of alternative distributions. We recommend three members of the class of test statistics as being very effective testing procedures for exponentiality. In conclusion, practical examples based on real-life data are presented.

Abstract:
This thesis Poetic Paths is divided into two Volumes: 4 studies encompasses a historic and iconographic study of the works and discourse from four visual artists. The accompanying essay-book showcases the individual work in visual arts, especially in painting, I have been producing during the development of my PhD thesis. The first Volume includes two essays, on artists Alfredo Volpi and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, set within the modernist context. This Volume also includes interviews with Fabio Miguez and Manuel Caeiro, set within the context of contemporary art. By analyzing the historical texts and interviews, a notable specificity of the artists\' discourses emerges and allows for greater approximation to the original context in which their work was produced. Therefore, the interplay between personal testimonials and the pictorial practices of these artists affords a poetic interpretation of their work, with the city as their procedural space, as their creative paths relates to their experiences and travels, either in Sao Paulo or Lisbon, among other places.

O primeiro, é a biblioteca.
The aim of this thesis is to reflect on the relationship between space and time in the works of the painter Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, and the writer Agustina Bessa-Luis. The dialog between the painter and writer, which first argument is to discuss how both of them highlight the need of an investigation of the mentioned relationship, confirms itself trough themes which were developed along both artists production. The first one is the library. In spite of not being clearly described in Agustina's narratives, the way Vieira da Silva understands and creates library-themed paintings dialogs with a peculiar view, built by Bessa-Luis' writing, especially through the idea that books contain other books. The game, second elected theme, has been persistently included in Vieira da Silva's work and also in Agustinian novels. At last, the third theme refers to the house and the art studio. Therefore, the library, the game and the house/ art studio are not only relating themes between the painter and the writer, but also ways of understanding and of interpreting possibilities for the space-time relationship that painting and literature contain

This work is consequence of the plunge into the production and the shows universe of the Tear group‟s play The Stray Kings (Os Reis Vagabundos), from 1982, evocated by the creation crew as well as by its audience. This play is ponderated as a landmark of gaucho theatre where its director, Maria Helena Lopes used her main work concepts: play, improvisation, clowning and movement analysis.

Abstract:
The French Revolution has long been recognised as the crucial turning point in modern European history. The event is often cited as the beginning point for European Romanticism. Helen Maria Williams occupied a unique position at the crucible of events in post-revolutionary Paris. Having visited the capital in 1790 to attend the Fête de la Fédération on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, she was to spend the rest of her life endeavouring to communicate the originating ideals which she had first encountered there. Returning to France in 1791, she was naturalised as French in 1817 and remained in Paris until her death in 1827. Renowned for her poetry and most famously for the extensive body of political reportage contained in the 8 volumes of her Letters from France, Williams was also a translator, an aspect of her corpus which has been largely overlooked in academic research. It is in the collection of translations in which she finds her most Romantic expression. In the translations produced from Paris, Williams experiments with progressive European thought, both philosophically and linguistically, working towards a political and literary universalism influenced by contemporary French culture and by German thought arriving in France from members of the pre-unification states. As a successful salonnière, Williams became acquainted with many of the period’s leading figures, absorbing and reinterpreting spheres of influence in her translations. Literary translations, such as Paul and Virginia and The Leper of the City of Aoste, reside among the more prosaic works such as The Confidential and Political Correspondence of Lewis the Sixteenth to form a body of work which reveals Williams’s idiosyncratic practices and, most readily in the paratextual material of her many prefaces, her ideas as to the purpose of translation. 4 The idea of liminality is fundamental to our understanding of Williams’s life and work. Occupying the mysterious middle-ground, Williams resides in the space between nations, between cultures, languages, literary movements and historical-temporal thresholds. From this position she operates as mediator, not only of French literature, but of socio-political realities. Throughout her time in France she remained convinced of the truth of the originating revolutionist ideals she had first encountered in 1790 and she strived always to mediate and to re-inscribe, indeed to translate the French Revolution of 1789. The translations of Helen Maria Williams serve as the appropriate locus from which to suggest a reconfiguration of her importance in the canon of Romantic women writers and translators.

Abstract:
Two major events in the biblical stories of the Holy family are how Mary and Joseph, each at a time, are visited by an angel carrying the message of Mary having a baby through the Holy Spirit. Popularly speaking, this message must have blown their minds, and, thereby, they likely found themselves in some sort of crisis afterwards. This essay examines how the psychological theory of Murray Bowen may be useful as a key for interpreting these biblical texts, Luk and Matt 1:18-25. Murray Bowen's “Family systems theory” describes how every member of a family is linked together as a social system, and this essay uses Bowen’s concepts of differentiation, triangles, and solid self/pseudo-self. By using relevant psychological theory in the interpretation of these biblical stories, Christ-believers of today may be able to understand and interpret the stories in relation to their own lives and circumstances.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the writing strategies of three literary women in the 1780s and 1790s: Charlotte Smith (1749-1806), Helen Maria Williams (1761-1827) and Joanna Baillie(1762-1851). With the reshaping of Romanticism in the late twentieth century these women writers have enjoyed a critical renaissance. Central to their revival has been the concept of historical reclamation, as critics have unveiled a 'forgotten' female tradition; simultaneously, many accounts presented female authorship as a hazardous occupation for women in the period. In examining the dual themes of popularity and posterity, this survey provides a new critical perspective on Romantic women writers: as influential players in an age of female authors, and as iconic figures \within an alternative literary history.

Abstract:
British author Helen Maria Williams (1761-1827) traveled to France in July 1790 to participate in the first anniversary of the French Revolution. At a time in which women's participation in the political discussion was regarded as improper, Williams devoted the greatest part of her writing career to produce chronicles discussing the events she witnessed in France. Her narratives on the Revolution have traditionally been studied either in isolation from the rest of her corpus, or together with her early production and reception. For that matter, this thesis provides a complete critical study focused only on her analysis of revolutionary events. Writing at the turn of the eighteenth century, Williams was influenced by the literature of Sensibility. However, she does not partake in the individualistic turn that this literary trend was taking in the last decades of the century. In her account, compassion is at the centre of political action, as it moves people to take part in the events with a collective change in mind and not only to alleviate suffering at an individual level. Williams sees politics as a collective effort and does not envision the future of nations as being only at the hands of political leaders. She explores the potential of acting in politics from the context of small and every-day actions. Besides, Williams does not see the divisions between the public and private as rigid and fixed, as she brings constant attention to how political decisions affect people on an everyday scale. Although this approach has been understood as domestic by Mellor (1992: 264) or Duckling (2010: 79), this dissertation shows that Williams is not only confined to the sphere of the home. In her discussion of individual affairs, Williams pays attention to public spaces such as prisons, salons, the streets and the battlefield. After setting in France permanently in 1792, Williams held a unique position compared to other contemporary British authors who participated in the debate surrounding the French Revolution in Britain, such as Burke or Wollstonecraft. As a result, Williams appeals to a revolutionary discourse rather than taking a nationalistic stance in order to make claims in favour of social emancipation.

Abstract:
This essay examines how family-related violence was depicted in art in Sweden during the 70s, 80s and 90s. A major shift in the views of violence within the family and in relationships occurs during this period, which becomes evident through a change in laws but is also visible in an ongoing social debate. Basing my research on a number of works by female artists, depicting violence, I have analysed ways of interpreting and understanding the violence in these images, in relation to the changed views on family, gender roles and violence. The female perspective on violence is often the same as the perspective of the violated, and I have chosen to study female artists, thus assuming that a changed attitude is most clearly reflected in this group. The artists included in the study are Marie-Louise Ekman, Marja Ruta, Kristina Abelli Elander, Maria Lindberg, Maria Friberg and Monica Larsen Dennis, Helene Billgren, Tuija Lindström, Charlotte Gyllenhammar, Anna-Maria Ekstrand and Annika von Hausswolff. The works are grouped into four categories based on a model created by Gregory H. Stanton, which he developed in the survey of genocide. His model depicts ten stages in which violence slowly increases. My division is in four stages and is named structural violence, embodied acts of violence or abuse, crime victims or traces of crime, and consequences of violence. Seen over the period covered by the study, one can observe an increase in the number of images with violent content. The depictions change from being political messages to becoming more provocative and questioning power structures. This is a development which is happening simultaneously with the breakthrough of postmodern art.The artists have in several works been influenced by or relate to images of violence shown in news media and popular culture, a genre that grows during the 1980s home video epoch. But the art not only interacts with other visual media, it also wants to involve the viewer by exploring and questioning values and hierarchies in society. The girl as a symbol of an innocent victim is represented in several of the works, and the girls are given a much greater freedom of action in the artworks than in reality. A concealed aggression is made visible and in several of the works the girls act violators.Depiction of violence has not been treated as a theme or categorized as a separate genre in the arts. To the extent that I have found analyses of works containing violence in the arts, there has been a hesitative attitude and the images have been perceived as simple in a communicative or interpretive aspect. In my study, I come to another conclusion, Seeing that the processing of violence in the artistic works creates a counter-image to stereotypical and simplified images in media and and so helps us to see the normative values, power imbalances, behaviours and expectations that are often the basis for acts of violence.

Full text
Abstract:
This comparative study of the theatre of Helene Cixous and Marina Tsvetaeva proposes a reading of their plays as a coherent corpus engaged specifically with the representation of poetic identity. Tsvetaeva's and Cixous' plays present a diverse range of characters who can be identified as poet-selves and who struggle to assert their identity in hostile environments. An inherent link is established between the thematic and the generic. Cixous' and Tsvetaeva's adoption of the theatre as genre in which to develop their conceptualisations of poetic identity is shown to be important to the thematic contexts in which the poet-selves are constructed. This study defines four elements: language, exile, sexual difference and Greek mythology, which are shown to be common to the representation of poetic identity in Tsvetaeva's and Cixous' plays. Each element is addressed in turn in Chapters Two to Five and its role in both writers' constructions of poetic identity in their individual plays is explored and problematised. The conclusion evaluates the radical nature of Cixous' and Tsvetaeva's dramatisations of poetic identity in the context of the representation of the female poet and discusses the evolution of this theme in a chronological approach to their theatre.

Abstract:
This project explicates the ways in which writers from different cultural groups (Anglo American, American Indian, and Mexican American) used literature to defend the land claims of increasingly marginalized peoples within the United States around the turn of the twentieth century. Each of the writers I discuss (Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton, Alexander Posey, Charles Lummis, and Helen Hunt Jackson) constructs and manipulates racial hierarchies in order to assert the comparative virtues of the cultural group for whom they advocate. I explore each writer's perceptions of proper land use and legitimate land claims and how these perceptions are informed by disparate cultural inheritances. By looking at authors from different backgrounds, writing from different regions in the United States, I am able to establish the frequency with which racialist assumptions guided popular opinion and U.S. law around the turn of the twentieth century--specifically in regards to land claims. I situate my reading of literary works within the historical context that made competitions for land particularly fierce during this period.

The decline of Apis mellifera colonies has become a concern worldwide. Several studies have shown the negative effects of insecticides on this species. Toxicological studies on stingless bees, on the other hand, are rare despite the great diversity of meliponines in Brazil. The insecticide imidacloprid acts agonistically on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors of insects. In sublethal doses, this compound impairs learning performance and memory formation in insects. This study determined the toxicity of imidacloprid for the stingless bee Scaptotrigona postica, based on the median lethal dose (LD50) by topical application and median lethal concentration (LC50) by ingestion. The topical LD50 was 25.20 (24 hours) and 24.46 (48 hours) ng i.a./μL/bee and the ingestion LC50 was 42.50 (24 hours) and 14.28 (48 hours) ng i.a./μL diet. Based on the results of LC50 two sublethal concentrations, the lethal concentration, and a concentration above the lethal concentration were chosen for the analysis of the cytotoxic effects of imidacloprid on the mushroom bodies, midgut, and Malpighian tubules of Scaptotrigona postica. Symptoms of intoxication, such as hyperexcitation, paralysis, and disorientation, were observed in bees fed a diet with imidacloprid. The mushroom bodies of treated bees exhibited dilated intercellular spaces, staining for caspase-3, and cellular alterations, such as chromatin condensation and mitochondrial degeneration, that could be associated with the cell death process by apoptosis. Although metabolic changes were not observed in the target organ of imidacloprid, the brain, the organs involved in its metabolization and excretion, the midgut and Malphigian tubules, respectively, exhibited increased metabolism in the attempt to inactivate the toxic compound present in the organism. The morphological alterations, such as the... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract: The decline of Apis mellifera colonies has become a concern worldwide.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Religious theater or erotic sculpture? A study of how the sculpture group Ecstasy of Saint Teresaand the Cornaro chapel have been described and used in literature of art history. This study aims to investigate how the sculpture group Ecstasy of Saint Teresa and the Cornarochapel has been written about and presented in literature about art history. The method has been tostudy literature, to visit the Cornaro chapel, and to make comparisons between pictures, texts andown experiences. The questions set out to be answered was; How has the Cornaro chapel and the Ecstasy of SaintTeresa been described and interpreted in literature of art history? What kind of pictures are beingused to illustrate the chapel? What is in focus and what is withheld in the presentation of the chapel,in text and in pictures? Is it possible to see a change, in how art historians write about the Cornarochapel, over time?Reading and comparing the texts and pictures that illustrates the literature, makes visible how thebaroque period, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Teresa av Avila and the Cornaro chapel has been presented inthe chosen literature, and answered the questions. The similarities between the Cornaro chapel and a theater stage, Bernini's interest in the theaterand his devout Catholicism, as well as the Counter-reformation's use of art to reach their goal ofmaking people more devout to Catholicism, is in focus. The erotic overtones in the sculpture groupare being withheld as well as Bernini's personality. Saint Teresa's work for the Counter reformationand how her texts and spirituality affected her contemporaries are also withheld. The pictures that illustrates the chapel in the studied literature are similar to each other, and oftenshow a close-up of the sculpture group with the saint and the angel, but also an overview of thechapel. The pictures are with no exceptions taken from a viewpoint inaccessible to a visitor of thechapel. The changes seen in the literature is that art history is becoming more contextualized. The sculpture group is not a religious theater, nor an erotic sculpture, but both at the same time.
