Abstract:
Dans la littérature négro-africaine d'expression française, la coutume et la croyance en quelques traditions sociales (l'excision des filles et l’objectivation de la femme) occupent une place importante. Si la société traditionnelle africaine considère que l’excision ritualisée et le mariage des filles donnent lieu à la vie sexuelle normale et symbolise une transformation radicale de la vie de celles-ci, il faut reconnaître que ces pratiques entraînent, également, de dramatiques et graves conséquences physiques et psychologiques. Cette contribution propose ainsi une analyse des romans Soleils des Indépendances d’Ahmadou Kourouma et Perpétue et l’habitude du malheur de Mongo Beti et des motivations qui ont poussé ces écrivains à faire de l’itinéraire des deux femmes (Salimata et Perpétue) des soubassements de leur poétique. Nous mettrons l'accent sur les douloureuses épreuves par lesquelles est obligée de passer une fille africaine pour devenir une femme et prendre contact avec la véritable vie de famille. Mis en position de prendre parti, le lecteur se voit amené à juger insupportable le sort réservé à ces femmes incarnant la force vive et active du monde africain.

Résumé Située au coeur du bassin arachidier du Sénégal, la zone d’étude de Niakhar est tout à fait représentative des régions rurales sahéliennes caractérisées par le maintien de modèles de fécondité élevée. En effet, les grandes tendances de la fécondité observées grâce au Système de Suivi Démographique de l’IRD font état du maintien des descendances nombreuses (environ huit enfants par femme); elles révèlent par ailleurs une augmentation des naissances et des grossesses avant le premier mariage. Pour comprendre les mécanismes sur lesquels se fondent les comportements de fécondité dans cette région, nous proposons d’explorer la pertinence de l’approche institutionnelle, telle que décrite dans les travaux de Mc Nicoll (1982), Grégory et Piché (1985), Piché et Poirier (1995), ou encore Lesthaeghe (1989). Ainsi, la mise en perspective de l’évolution du système de production agricole, des conditions environnementales et du fonctionnement de l’organisation sociale permet de mettre en lumière le sens que les populations de cette région donnent aux comportements démographiques et, en particulier, aux pratiques relatives à la fécondité.

Les caractéristiques des noirs d’Afrique sont abondamment décrites dans la littérature espagnole de la Renaissance. Ces descriptions littéraires révèlent beaucoup au sujet de l’image que l’on en avait dans les représentations collectives. La création de protagonistes et de personnages secondaires africains offre une cristallisation des observations des réalités sociales et de l’élaboration artistique de préjugés et de stéréotypes sociaux. Cet article analyse deux textes présentant des mariages de noirs d’Afrique: le premier texte est une courte pièce du XVIIe siècle de Francisco de Avellaneda, et le deuxième est une ballade populaire, datant du XVIIIe siècle, et portant sur la célébration d’un mariage noir en Andalousie. Ces deux sources décrivent le mariage en se concentrant spécialement sur la dégradation des caractéristiques féminines et de la «beauté noire».

RésuméÀ partir d’une pétition d’esclaves africains envoyée de Bahia en 1708, demandant au pape l’excommunication de leurs maîtres qui refusent de les laisser se marier, cet article s’intéresse à la question du mariage légitime des esclaves dans le Brésil colonial et se concentre sur l’aspect juridique et donc sur le droit canonique qui régit le mariage dans le monde portugais. La question est fondamentale pour l’étude des sociétés esclavagistes, car elle montre l’ambiguïté du statut de l’esclave comme res humana et se situe à la frontière de la souveraineté domestique et de la reconnaissance de la personne de l’esclave. L’Église coloniale du Brésil a fait de la défense du mariage des esclaves une priorité. Elle obtient une bulle pontificale sur le sujet en 1585 et réaffirme, au début du XVIIIe siècle, la théorie classique du mariage des esclaves qui repose sur la liberté du sacrement. Elle se contente cependant de condamner moralement les maîtres et refuse tout rôle émancipateur au mariage. L’enjeu pour l’Église est d’affirmer qu’un ordre chrétien est possible dans une société esclavagiste, ce qui d’une certaine manière conforte les bases idéologiques de cette société où les esclaves représentent la moitié de la population. Comment les esclaves chrétiens ont-ils pu s’approprier l’idée forte de liberté du sacrement et comment le mariage légitime peut-il entrer dans leurs stratégies pour plus d’autonomie et de dignité au sein du carcan de l’esclavage?

RÉSUMÉ Différents modèles d'analyse ont été proposés pour tenter de comprendre les bases du mariage polygamique en Afrique. De nombreux auteurs ont annoncé le déclin imminent de la polygamie et ce, plus particulièrement en milieu urbain, laissant entendre qu'il existe une inadéquation entre cette institution matrimoniale et le mode de vie urbain. Les données dont on dispose pour le Mali nous permettent de remettre en question cette perspective. Bien qu'on ait assisté à des transformations importantes des schémas de nuptialité en zone urbaine au Mali (augmentation du célibat et élévation de l'âge moyen au mariage), il demeure néanmoins que l'incidenice de la polygamie n'a pas connu de modifications sensibles de 1960 à 1987. L'examen de quelques caractéristiques économiques des femmes en union polygame et des ménages auxquels elles appartieinnent semble offrir certaines pistes de recherche fort intéressantes pour nous aider à mieux comprendre le maintien de cette institution matrimoniale dans certaines villes africaines.

Le contexte réaliste qui inspire les oeuvres des deux romancières va influencer cette étude des personnages féminins créés par Buchi Emecheta et Calixthe Beyala qui seront analysés dans leur contexte romanesque et seront reliés à la réalité quotidienne. Les deux auteures sont ressortissantes des cultures et des aires linguistiques différentes : Buchi Emecheta, anglophone du Nigeria et Calixthe Beyala, francophone du Cameroun. Bien que l’on soutienne l’idée que les Africains partagent les memes cultures, cet article vise à concrétiser cette opinion tout en relevant également les convergences et les divergences dans les perspectives des deux auteures. Les personnages ont été etudiés dans le cadre patriarcal qui occasionne leur réaction et détermine leur disposition psychique. Cet article mettra en relief quelques exigences patriarcales contraignantes et aliénantes qui relèguent la femme au deuxième rang et étouffent son existence. Il abordera le sujet du mariage et de la dot qui sont les moyens adoptés par le système patriarcat pour contrôler le corps et la sexualité de la femme. Les auteures amènent aussi le lecteur à se retrouver dans le fil de narration des évènements réels auxquels il pourrait s’identifier.

Tilapia mariae (Cichlidae) is a tropical teleost, native to West African coastal drainages in the Gulf of Guinea and naturalised in the USA, Australia and possibly Russia. This paper reviews published information on the species from its native and introduced range to improve the effective management of fisheries as well as manage current infestations, reduce further spread and promote research on control measures outside its natural range. Within its natural range, the species is abundant and contributes to the local subsistence and artisanal fisheries; however, it is not extensively utilised for aquaculture. Outside its native range, it has proliferated, particularly in disturbed aquatic ecosystems. Tilapia mariae has several characteristics that make it successful in both its natural and introduced range. These include plasticity in reproductive behaviour (particularly parental care of the brood), a variety of feeding behaviours and dietary components, tolerance of a wide range of environmental conditions and aggressive behaviour to other fish species. Although tilapiine species are considered to be amongst the world’s worst invasive alien species, surprisingly little information is available on potential impacts of T. mariae on native species and aquatic ecosystems outside its native range.

Au Gabon, le mariage est une institution qui permet l'union de deux personnes et de deux familles. Sur le plan juridique, seul le mariage civil a une valeur légale. Mais le mariage traditionnel encore appelé mariage coutumier reste une étape importante durant laquelle se déroule la cérémonie de la dot. Cette étude traite de la manière dont les gabonais se représentent le couple et le mariage. Notre approche théorique et nos champs d'investigation portent sur l'évolution socio-culturelle de cette institution et sur la relation que les jeunes gabonais établissent entre la culture, leurs comportements et leurs actions sociales. L'intérêt ici est de comprendre les influences qu'exerce le modèle de vie occidental en matière de moeurs et de style de vie par le biais de l'urbanisation, de la scolarisation et des médias. Notre problématique qui se décline en plusieurs questions a pour principal objectif de décrire le modèle de couple et le type de mariage auxquels aspirent ces jeunes. Le travail de terrain réalisé au Gabon et en France nous a permis d'établir une typologie des conduites et des discours recueillis. Les principaux thèmes abordés sont : la polygamie, la dot, le choix du partenaire, le couple mixte, le sida, l'homosexualité et les rapports de séduction. Avec leurs mots, ils posent un regard sur la culture gabonaise et française et nous livrent un discours partagé entre tradition et modernité. Ce travail permet donc une nouvelle approche des rapports de couple et du mariage dans une société gabonaise en plein évolution.

Les mouvements migratoires, et le regroupement des populations de différentes origines sur un même territoire, entraînent des rencontres interculturelles et parfois l'émergence de couples mixtes. Le mode d'adaptation d'un individu se déplaçant de son pays d'origine vers un pays d'accueil n'est pas sans conséquence sur sa vie. Pour se ressaisir chaque individu développe des stratégies identitaires, bien précises. Se mettre en couple peut amener le sujet étranger à mieux s'affirmer dans le pays d'accueil. D'où l'hypothèse selon laquelle, la différence entre les stratégies identitaires des membres de couples mixtes déterminent le sentiment de normalité et le lien qu'entretient le conjoint étranger avec la société d'accueil. Notre méthodologie est à la fois quantitative et qualitative c'est-à-dire que nous avons opté dans un premier temps pour un recueil de données par questionnaire puis effectué des entretiens semi-directifs. Nous avons réalisé notre étude en France auprès de 70 couples franco-africains. Des résultats inattendus ont été relevés montrant l'impact de l'interculturation, à travers la durée de l'expérience interculturelle, sur le sentiment de normalité du conjoint étranger<br>The migration flows and the merging of populations from various origins within a given territory, pull intercultural encounters and sometimes the emergence of mixed couples. The adaptation pattern of an individual moving from his home country to a host country is not without consequences on his life. To regain self-control every individual develops a process of interculturation translated into very precise identity strategies. To enter an union can bring the foreign one to a better self assertion in the host country. From where the hypothesis according to which, the difference between the identity strategies of the members of mixed couples determines the foreign partner feeling of normality and the link he maintains with the host society. Our methodology is both quantitative and qualitative that we opted at first for a data collection by questionnaire then by semi-directive interviews. We realized our study in France with 70 French-African couples. Unexpected results were found concerning the impact of interculturation, trough the intercultural experience duration, on the foreign partner feeling of normality

Le fléau des mariages d’enfants et des mutilations génitales féminines, essentiellement pratiquées sur des fillettes africaines, est bien connu. Mais on ne mesure pas forcément l’importance du rôle que l’ONU joue depuis des décennies dans la lutte contre les « pratiques traditionnelles néfastes », concept multiforme que l’Organisation a elle-même développé. Le cadre normatif international mis en place pour protéger l’enfant de ces pratiques est riche. Plusieurs textes déclaratoires existent ou sont sur le point d’être adoptés et, surtout, les conventions universelles en matière des droits de l’homme, assorties de mécanismes de contrôle, permettent aux organes de l’ONU de surveiller la manière dont le respect et le progrès des droits de l’enfant sont assurés par les différents Etats membres. Dès lors, l’analyse de la documentation brute officielle issue des dialogues ayant lieu au sein de ces organes se révèle précieuse pour comprendre l’attitude générale des Etats intéressés - les Etats africains en premier lieu, mais également les Etats occidentaux qui sont de plus en plus confrontés aux pratiques traditionnelles néfastes – et pour apprécier l’effectivité du droit international en ce domaine culturellement sensible

La présente thèse, intitulée : Les Ecrivains ivoiriens et la langue française. Heurs et malheurs d'un mariage contre nature. L'exemple de l'œuvre romanesque de Dadié, Kourouma et Adiaffi, se veut une étude formelle et détaillée des procédés stylistiques mis en œuvre par les trois principaux écrivains de Côte d'Ivoire pour essayer de contourner l'obstacle majeur que constitue, de toute évidence, la langue française dans la libre expression de leur tradition et de leur personnalité culturelles. Ainsi, il apparaît tout d'abord que ces écrivains ont habilement essaimé dans leur discours romanesque des termes, des constructions et des formes particulières d'expression directement inspirés des langues de leur terroir national à l'aide de procédures diverses d'attelages et de collages inter linguistiques. Ensuite, ils ont clairement subverti nombre de formes grammaticales, syntaxiques, lexicales et esthétiques françaises par un détournement souvent inattendu de leur sens ou emploi vers des expressions plus conformes à l'imaginaire africain. Enfin, là où ne suffisaient plus emprunts formels et références symboliques, ils n'ont pas hésité à inventer des unités linguistiques et esthétiques hybrides et multiformes plus aptes à servir leur quête d'identité. Au total, en dépit d'obstacles bien prévisibles, les écrivains ivoiriens ont réussi à montrer qu'au cœur d'une grande langue de communication internationale comme le français, il est possible de trouver place pour une expression plurielle, et, en conséquence, voie d'accès à un dialogue des langues et des cultures<br>The present thesis entitled: Ivorian writers and french language: fortunes and misfortunes of a marriage against nature. An example of Dadié, Kourouma and Adiaffi's romance work, it takes a formal study and some detailed stylistic procedures put to work by the three principle writers of Côte d'Ivoire ( Dadie, Kourouma, and Adiaffi) to try and overcome the major obstacles that constitutes, obviously, french language in free expression of their tradition and of their cultural personalities. Also, it clearly looks like these writers have cunningly used in their romantic speech some terms, some constructions and particular forms of expression directly extracted from languages of their motherland by the help of a diversity of gathering and putting together into interlinguistics. Having in that one reference the imaginary african, they have in general foreseen obstacles, succeeded in showing that in the centre of a large language of international communication like french, it is possible to find a place for a plural expression, and, by the same way, for exchange between different languages and cultures

Quand, dans dix ans, l'on fetera le bicentenaire du code civil francais, il faudra bien mettre a l'honneur les codes africains francophones. Lors de l'elaboration du code du mariage et de la tutelle du mali en 1962, le legislateur malien s'est inspire du code civil francais, mais il n'a pas fait table rase des coutums , d'alleurs redeployees par l'islam. Les manifestations institutionnelles les plus evidentes du maintien du droit dit traditionnel en matiere de mariage, sont la dot et la polygamie, sur lesquelles nous avons voulu insister particulierement. La greffe juridique du code civil francais et des institutions traditionnelles n'a pas ete facile a realiser. L'une de nos preoccupations a ete de souligner les contradictions juridiques qui en decoulent. Le code du mariage et de la tutelle du mali date de 1962, il n'a pas ete modifie depuis. Or, la realite malienne a evolue en 30ans. Il faudra bien, dans l'avenir se preoccuper de la reforme de ce code et y integrer l'idee d'egalite chere au droit francais<br>When, in ten years, the bicentenary of the french civil code takes place, one should honor african codes of french speaking countries. During the elaboration of the marriage code and the marriage code and the guardianship of mali in 1962, the malian legislator was inspired by the french civil code but he didn't make a clean spweep of customs which were transformed by islam. The most obvious institutional manifestations of maintenance of the law called traditional as regards marriage are dowry and polygamy wich we particulary emphasize. The record office of the french civil code and that of traditional institutions had not been to underline lagel contradictions. The marriage code and the guardiansdhip of mali of 1962 has not modified since. Now, the malian reality has evolve since thirty years. In a near future one should be preoccupied by the reform of this code and integrate the idea of equality dear to french law. This reform will require another confrontation between the french law and traditional institutions but also a study of other african codes of french-speaking countries

Abstract:
'White Shark Cage Diving' (WSCD) enables tourists to experience a face-to-face encounter with wild sharks in the open water. In order to attract the animals close to the cages, tour operators often use chum, bait, or decoys, which interferes with the natural habits of marine wildlife. These practices have great potential to adversely impact animals and the marine environment, with unknown long-term consequences. Globally, South Africa has the most extensive WSCD industry. The management is based on a policy paper and regulations published in 2008 by the Minister of Environmental Affairs (a ministry which also included Tourism). This thesis discusses the question of whether South Africa's WSCD industry is appropriately regulated in the light of today's best practices. South Africa's regulatory framework will be compared to the management arrangements of other jurisdiction where WSCD takes place. The ultimate objective of this thesis is to determine whether the South Africa's WSCD regime strikes a sustainable balance between commercial interests and the need to protect this elusive creature.

Southern Africa is home to highly diverse marine environments along its coasts. The main reason for the contrasting environments is the two major boundary currents, the Benguela and Agulhas currents, and their interaction around the tip of South Africa. Algal blooms are known to proliferate predominantly off the nutrient - rich west coast, however, sporadic inshore upwelling on the east coast can also illicit these events. In addition, solar salt - pans located on the coast that draw their water from the bay area are affected by bloom events. Algal viruses play a key role in regulating phytoplankton communities and modulate the dynamics of these bloom events. Identifying the viruses associated with algal blooms is the first step in determining the role they play in the bloom dynamics. Here I chose to focus on phycodnaviruses, known agents of bloom termination. Samples were taken from two specific algal blooms that occurred in 2013 in different bioregions namely Elands Bay (west coast) and Algoa Bay (east coast). Additionally the Cerebos solar salt pans located along the west coast were selected as sample sites to investigate viral composition. DNA polymerase (pol) gene fragments were amplified from environmental samples using algal - virus specific PCR primers AVS1 and POL. Amplified fragments were then sequenced. Viral sequences were identified and mapped to existing virus families. Amplicon specific primers were designed for select dominant virus group identified for both bloom events. These were used to screen across all samples to determine viral prevalence. Phylogenetic analysis of viral sequences revealed new clades of Phycodnaviridae in the Elands Bay and Algoa Bay regions. A bloom terminating virus, EB1, is proposed for the Elands Bay bloom event. The Cerebos salt pans showed the greatest diversity of all samples analysed and novel halophilic algal viruses were identified in regions with the highest salinity.

Includes bibliographical references.<br>This study explores inter-annual rainfall variability over the East African coast region (Kenya and Tanzania) for the period 1980-2010 and focuses on dry and wet spell characteristics during the two rainy seasons. The atmospheric and ocean conditions associated with the rainfall variability are also considered. Extreme occurrences of rainfall variable can result in droughts and floods which in turn may lead to socioeconomic disruptions. East Africa is highly dependent and vulnerable to the amounts and timing of rainfall.

AbstractNamibia is the most arid country in sub-Saharan Africa characterized by the existence of two deserts, the Namib and the Kalahari. However, though being arid, agriculture still plays a critical role in Namibia’s economy, which includes both crop and animal production. Furthermore, the country is endowed with vast marine resources, with its marine waters being equivalent to two-thirds of Namibia’s terrestrial environment. In the face of climate change and a growing population, there is a need for Namibia to continue with its climate smart efforts which is critical in shifting the country from its current dependency on imports thus increasing the country’s food self-sufficiency. This chapter highlights the threats posed by climate change, both on land and the marine environment of the country, which has potential negative impacts on the economy. Current research being undertaken in Namibia on ocean acidification, sea water harvesting, climate smart agriculture, and atmospheric science, is also highlighted in this chapter. The information presented in this chapter will be critical in guiding climate change mitigation policies in hyperarid African countries, thus reducing the burden caused by the global change in climate. Aspects on the direction of future research on climate adaptation with a holistic and multidisciplinary approach are also proposed.
