Abstract:
Marine lobsters include some of the most highly prized and valuable seafood species in the world. Accessible wild populations of edible lobster species are under increasing pressure from harvesting, habitat loss, disease, pollution and climate change. To provide an alternative supply, there have been extensive efforts to develop aquaculture methods for many species of marine lobsters, but with slow progress. A range of unfavorable biological attributes of marine lobsters has constrained their development for aquaculture, including complex life cycles, low fecundity, extended larval periods, slow growth, and cannibalism. A lack of knowledge of aspects of the fundamental biology of many species has also made it challenging to advance aquaculture techniques. Currently, the only extensive commercial aquaculture of marine lobsters occurs in Vietnam, with annual production of well over 1,000 t of spiny lobsters. This involves the wild capture and mariculture of early juveniles of several species of spiny lobsters in simple floating sea cages and feeding them on freshly caught marine life, mostly small coastal fish and benthic invertebrates. The success of this apparently simple technology indicates the opportunity for increased aquaculture production as soon as the recent advances in larval culture of spiny (Palinuridae) and slipper (Scyllaridae) lobsters can provide a large and sustainable source of juveniles. While viable larval culture methods for the American and European clawed lobsters (Homaridae) have been available for some time, more recent advances with compartmentalized land- and sea-based culture systems show promise in overcoming the cannibalistic behavior of these species, an essential step toward developing commercially viable aquaculture. The likely emergence of large-scale commercial aquaculture of marine lobsters in the next decade has the potential to provide an alternative supply of lobsters into global seafood markets, with the prospect of relieving fishing pressure on wild populations of marine lobsters.

Abstract:
In the previous chapter we covered ways of describing samples of benthos, but specifically did not include diversity. We can talk of primary community variables, such as abundance (A), species richness (S) and biomass (B), and derived variables from these such as true diversity indices, evenness indices, and ratios indicating the relationship between species richness and abundance (A/S, the abundance ratio or the average abundance per species) and between biomass and abundance (B/A, the biomass ratio or the mean biomass per individual). Diversity is not just simply about the number of species found in a sample or area, but also uses data on the abundances of individuals among the species and the way those abundances are distributed among the species within the assemblage. There are many ways of describing diversity. Here we give a summary of the most important ones and reference sources of recent literature on the subject (see also the data analysis summary in Chapter 11). In the following section we consider simple indices (univariate) as measures of diversity; multivariate methods of analysing patterns will be covered in Chapter 7 on the effects of disturbance. The simplest way to measure diversity is the number of species found in a sample, called the species richness (S or SR). Yet diversity is not just about numbers of species; it is also concerned with the distribution of numbers of individuals per species. For example, if one assemblage has 50 individuals of each of 2 species A and B whereas another assemblage has 99 individuals of species A and 1 individual of species B, then both have the same species richness but the first assemblage is the more diverse. Thus a measure of diversity (an index) must take into account not only the number of species, but also the number of individuals per species. To distinguish this from species richness, the combination of individuals per species and number of species is called heterogeneity diversity. In fact there are a large number of diversity indices, and we do not propose to consider them all here (Magurran 2004 gives an excellent and detailed account and others are mentioned in the summary in Chapter 11).

The history of controlled vocabulary developments in marine sciences, from paper publications to the Semantic Web, is explored in detail. This history is being furthered through the publication of Linked Open Data, meaning: the publication of clearly identifiable entities; a simple, universal mechanism for retrieving resources; a generic graph-based data model; and publishing explicit relationships to other resources. Progress towards Linked Open Data for marine science is reported in this chapter. As shown by the Data-Information-Knowledge ecosystem, the approach of “small pieces of data loosely joined” provides presentation and organisation to data, which creates information. The use of query endpoints to integrate this information from multiple locations into a knowledge base, which required active collaboration between cooperative partners to truly generate new knowledge and to address emerging science questions, is described.

Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) of marine risers poses a significant challenge as the offshore oil and gas industry moves into deep water. A time-domain analysis tool has been developed to predict the VIV of marine risers based on a forcing algorithm and by making full use of the available high Reynolds number experimental data. In the formulation, the hydrodynamic damping is not treated as a special case but simply an extension of the experimentally derived lift curves. The forcing algorithm was integrated into a mooring analysis program based on the global-coordinate based finite element meth

Abstract:
Analytical studies conducted by the U.S. Navy for the future marine gas turbine propulsion engines have concentrated in the mid-20,000 horsepower (HP) range. This power range meets the propulsion requirements of current surface ships, such as auxiliary and amphibious, frigate, destroyer, and light-cruiser ship types. In looking at future ship propulsion requirements, the possibility of developing a 50,000 HP marine gas turbine should be considered. This paper discusses the results of an initial investigation into the feasibility of a 50,000 HP marine gas turbine propulsion engine for surface s

<p>This paper presents the Ain Sukhna Product Hub, a marine terminal facility recently finished in the Red Sea, Egypt, including the design and construction of a 3 km long offshore roadway. Formed by 83 simply supported spans, the roadway structures are elements that can greatly impact on the construction planning. An overview of the fast track nature of design, procurement and construction of this significant offshore structure are presented, describing the main design works and construction methods and highlighting the importance of the coordination with construction team and reality o
