Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: This work pays homage to the most controversial noblemen of his time, the XII Duke of Osuna Mariano Téllez-Girón and Beaufort-Spontin (1814-1882); undoubtedly the last scion of the great breed of Osuna. This noble house precisely reached its zenith at the height of the 19th century becoming one of the most powerful houses all over Europe. However, the vast wealth gathered over generations that Mariano received unexpectedly, since he was the second son of the house, ran out because of the Duke’s wasteful spending. He could not even afford the payment of his tomb where he lies. That is why Mariano Osuna has passed into history, above all, as the archetype of spendthrift. Anyway, he also overflowed humanity and generosity in abundance, as quite evidenced to his relatives, dependents and homeland. He never wanted to charge the emoluments of the many military and diplomatic services that he provided Spain with.

Abstract:
The togolese legislator wanted to make of new marital law, a synthesis of traditional law and modern law. This synthesis is not easy to realese for it demands the conciliation of two opposed conceptions of marriage. The result is a mixture of modern and traditional legal rules more or less coherent both in marriage constitution and its subsequent effects. In marriage making, the modernisation tendency towards is enough bold. One finds more innovations as compared to local customs which are neventheless present. A survival of the traditional law, reflecting the persistence of customary rules is introduced in the new law through the maintain of institutions like the dowry and poligamy. These institutions were simply reorganized. Among marriage effects the togolese legislator tried to balance spouses' rights and duties by adjusting these to the new family, nothing else but the conjugal family. Yet the weight of the ancestral tradition is latent. One could only talk therefore of women's juridical condition improvement it is then not yet a real equality between spouses. The togolese legislator has made a long way through the modernisation of marriage law. But it is not yet the achievement of an the evolution, but only its start. In the future, this effort should be pursued by a better

Abstract:
Among all French-speaking countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Togo stands out by a relatively high differential between fertility levels in urban and rural areas which has been documented since the 60s and can be explained by long-term nuptiality changes. During the 80s, age at first union has still increased as a result of schooling, urban way of living and or economic crisis. This lengthening of premarital period is linked with extension of premarital sexual experience while contraceptive use and age at first birth remained stable. Increased premarital fertility and changes in matrimonial behaviour attest a weakening of familial control on marital practices. There are a few indicators of an extension of western nuptiality patterns in urban areas. However, two factors are caracteristic of an obvious aspiration of women to reach autonomy and a weak cohesion of couples : a high proportion of spouses living in separate places of residence, as a practice favoured by polygamy, and an increasing marital instability

Abstract:
In the study of plural marriage and the relationship between polygyny and the social environment, the different methodological approaches (anthropological, sociological, demographic and psychosociological) furnish their specific contributions. In the case of Togo, we have established that from a psychological point of view, the attitudes that students and civil servants develop with respect to plural marriage are divergent. Their attitudes vary on the basis of different statutory factors such as the socioprofessional status of the respondents, the age, the social situation of the family etc. The above factors work in conjonction with certain definite psychological mechanisms such as the search for social differenciation and the need to affirm a masculin identy in determining the personal attitude toward polygyny

Abstract:
Although a good number of researchers are studying the numerous and rapid transformations taking place in africa, it is nevertheless not easy to determine either the cause of change, or its scope. Rather than writing on social change in general, the investigation of a specific problem was chosen : the evolution of marriage institutions in kotokoli region over the past few years. The kotokoli marriage is based on the complementary nature of the group and of the individual, this measis that it brings into play a double alliance : family alliances on the one hand, and the union of the couple on the other. Families who establish marriage relationships aniong thernselves come from the same village or neighbouring ones. The matrinionial compensation, commonley called "dowery" is nseparable from the politics of alliances. Socio-economic changes and trasformations in the cultural order which have taken place in the kotokoli region have partially transformed the family order as well as the marriage system itself. Apparently these changes are resulting in a strengthening of the bonds between husband and wife, and between parents and their children

Abstract:
The study of the evolution of matrimonial behaviours is in kipping with the research of forwarnings of fertility transition in West African countries and specially in Cotonou, Accra and Lome. The data for the study are mainly the census taken in three countries since 1960, the world fertility survey made in Benin in 1982 and the demographic and healt surveys made in Ghana and Togo in 1988. The results obtained can be summarised as follows : - in the towns we notice in age at first in age at first sexual experience through generation and a recent increase in age at first marriage among young genetation. - first marriages are more stable in Cotonou than in Lome. - in Cotonou there are more men in polygamous marriage than in the two other towns, but women in polygamous marriage are more numerous in Lome than in Cotonou. Nevertheless, in all these countries there is a tendancy of regression of polygamy

Abstract:
Maringe ought to be commended for putting together an invaluable contribution to our understanding of research into a complex education system in South Africa. This volume provides a useful foundation to the current state of education quality in South Africa including the impact of interventions. It also brings to the fore challenges still facing education transformation. The evidence presented which, taken together, lays out a coherent view of how improvements could be made. Albert Chanee Head of Planning, Gauteng Department of Education For too long the weight of educational scholarship produced in South Africa has been limited to that simple and standard form called the literature review. Now, for the first time, education researchers are provided with an African-based text on the concepts and methods of conducting systematic reviews. In this exceptional work of editorship, Felix Maringe brings together some of the leading researchers on South African education to model and demonstrate how to review a significant body of research on a chosen topic which is adjudicated strictly on the basis of the quality and efficacy of the evidence in hand. I have no doubt that this remarkable book will become a standard reference for educational researchers in and beyond the African continent. It will also lift the quality of educational inquiry by equipping a new generation of scholars with the capacity for doing evidence-based research that compels the attention of policymakers, planners and practitioners alike. Abstract:
In this chapter I consider Maria Mancini’s patronage of music and musicians and her organization and participation in carnival entertainments such as allegorical floats and parades. Maria Mancini had spent several years in France before moving to Rome and her patronage in Rome shows on one hand her taste for public entertainment and on the other her desire, through patronage, to rebel against the oppressive patriarchal society of Rome and respond to the critics who thought she enjoyed too much freedom. This chapter also marks the end of Maria’s stay in Rome. In 1672, after many months of declining health and fears for her life, Maria Mancini decided to escape from Rome, an oppressive relationship with her husband, and a society that never seemed to have accepted her.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on several of Straub-Huillet’s films including History Lessons, Too Early/Too Late, Cézanne, Every Revolution is a Throw of the Dice, and The Bridegroom, the Actress, and the Pimp, looking at them through the lens of poetic devices such as the ideogram, gaps, interruptions, and stops, and how these may relate to cinematic devices used by Straub-Huillet including long-duration shots, tracking shots, and abrupt cutting. The role these devices play in the poetry of Oppen and Reznikoff are also analysed, as well as the Bertolt Brecht’s, Straub-Huillet’s, and the Objectivists’ penchant for quotation, generally without citations in the case of the latter two. Louis Zukofsky’s essay on Charles Chaplin’s Modern Times proves a key text in developing an Objectivist view of cinema that is ultimately quite Straubian.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette in relation to personal subjectivity and excess, specifically drawing on notions of poetic fancy, modernity, gender and ‘unwholesome’ consumption, and the poetry of John Keats. Coppola’s emphasis on sensation and surfaces elicits what Keats refers to as the ‘material sublime’, an engagement with sensory excess contrasted with the core subjectivity the Romantic sublime invokes. The film is compared to Keats’ Lamia, an allegorical poem about attempted psychological recuperation through aesthetic excess, as well as Colin Campbell’s description of ‘modern autonomous imaginative hedonism’. The chapter also engages with the ‘depth model’ of Romantic subjecthood that Coppola brings to the fore when Marie Antoinette’s bulwark of sensory pleasure is stripped away, along with its attendant aesthetic function, signalling not just the maturation found in her ethical acknowledgement of the suffering of others, but also her imminent death.

Abstract:
One of the truisms of sampling design is that the design depends on the objectives. Too often objectives are not defined properly, with the result that the data collected cannot be used to answer the questions posed. A good example is that of a monitoring programme that aims to detect changes in an assemblage of benthic organisms caused by eutrophication but where the magnitude of change was not specified in the objectives, with the result that the monitoring programme was so loosely designed that insufficient samples were taken. A posteriori analyses of the results may show that the monitoring would take 10 years to detect a 10% change in the faunal composition. You may think that this is an unrealistic and hypothetical example, but our experience shows that far too often results such as this are the norm. We return to the types of monitoring in Chapter 11, but for now let us start with perhaps the simplest case: we wish to survey an area of coastal soft sediment simply to find out what is there (i.e. to map the habitats and prepare for a more detailed quantitative study of the benthic assemblages). Up to the last couple of decades, sampling subtidally below diveable depths was usually done blind. One had to resort to charts, perhaps prepared in the nineteenth century, which have depths and descriptions of sediments made from soundings done with handlines with candlewax in a hollowed-out part of the lead weight that touched sediment particles, enabling the sediment type to be crudely mapped. Since the 1980s huge technological advances have been made in mapping sediments. Two types of instrumentation have been developed: depth sounders of various types and remote-operated vehicles (ROVs). With sounders, accurate maps of the contours of the seabed can be produced and then indications of the hardness and roughness superimposed on the depth and good three-dimensional images produced with modern software. Sophisticated multibeam echosounders have been used to map the whole continental shelves of many countries. Now that the satellite-based differential global positioning system (DGPS) is generally available with an accuracy to a few metres, mapping of subtidal sediments has become much easier and more accurate.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the evolution of models for fishery management, focusing on the problem of maintaining both replacement and a desirable level of yield. Early models from the 1950s led to management for maximum sustainable yield (MSY). Later, recruitment and egg production data from populations at low abundance were used to set critical replacement thresholds (CRT) using age-structured models. Modern fisheries are managed by control rules to avoid both overfishing (replacement too low) and being overfished (abundance too low). With the advent of spatial management through marine protected areas (MPA), strategic models showed that MPAs and conventional management essentially had the same effects on fishery yield. More realistic, spatially explicit, tactical models include more detail but produce results that support the conclusions of the strategic models. Finally, the growing science of adaptive management of MPAs has been based on the understanding of transient population dynamics from Chapter 4.

Abstract:
The chapter presents Marian worship in one of its specific local manifestations – the cult to the Virgin in the region of Asenovgrad, Central Southern Bulgaria. The fact that it is the most representative example of the vital and well-developed Marian cult within present-day Bulgaria, as well as authors' long-term fieldwork in the region (started 1996), influenced the choice of Asenovgrad as the focus of their attention. The methodological framework is based on the concept of local religion (Christian 1989: 3), reformulated by the authors into the concepts of local religiosity and local religious culture. The local Marian cult in Asenovgrad region is used as an example of how to understand this local and cultural embeddedness of religiosity, presented via (1) devotional sites and the images belonging to them (in this case, miracle-working icons of the Virgin); (2) local feasts and ritual practices; and (3) local and personal religious narratives. The authors regard places, rituals and narratives as basic elements which complement, influence and support each another, constituting a complex system of local religious culture. Following this pattern, the authors pinpointed for their analysis the three most important places of Marian worship in the region: the Dormition of Mary Monastery of Bachkovo, the Annunciation of Mary Church in Asenovgrad, and the Dormition of Mary Church in Gorni Voden. Besides the contextual information, the authors also focused on a more intimate, individual dimension of Marian worship, exploring the presence of the Virgin in personal narratives about miraculous recoveries, dreams, visions, etc. and delineating the connection between individual experience and cultural background. According to the authors, the local worship of Mary in Asenovgrad region is a brilliant example of the ways in which local religiosity exists and develops in the intersection of universal religion and local traditions, folklore and cultural specificities. On the local level, the general Christian figure of the Virgin acquires characteristic features, associated with her motherly aspect and her quality of a divine patroness and immediate helper in every need. Her intercession is achieved by means of sacred intermediaries that have the power to connect the common devotee with the celestial power: holy places, miracle-working icons, springs and caves. Apart from the well-known Marian feasts, idiosyncratic local holidays are observed, too, and the related ritual actions span from the canonical to the folkloric and ‘magical’. Specific symbols, such as the apple, the water, and the fish, come to the fore as a material representation of Mary's sacred power and assistance. Local and personal narratives add a private, sometimes even intimate aspect to the Marian devotion, binding the universal sacred figure of the Virgin with the history and geography of the local community, as well as with the individual life trajectories of the believers.

Abstract:
Microbe-mediated processes are crucial for biogeochemical cycles and the functioning of marine ecosystems (Azam and Malfatti 2007 ). If these processes are affected by ocean acidification, major consequences can be expected for the functioning of the global ocean and the systems that it influences, such as the atmosphere. In contrast to phytoplankton, which have been relatively well studied (see Chapter 6), there is comparatively little information on the effect of ocean acidification on heterotrophic microorganisms. Two reviews on the potential effects of ocean acidification on microbial plankton have recently been published (Liu et al. 2010 ; Joint et al. 2011) . In a recent perspective paper, Joint et al. (2011) concluded that marine microbes possess the flexibility to accommodate pH change and that major changes in marine biogeochemical processes that are driven by microorganisms are unlikely. Narrative reviews, which look at some of the relevant literature, are potentially biased and could lead to misleading conclusions (Gates 2002). Metaanalysis was developed to overcome most biases of narrative reviews. It statistically combines the results (effect size) of several studies that address a shared research hypothesis. Liu et al. (2010) used a metaanalytic approach to comprehensively review the current understanding of the effect of ocean acidification on microbes (including phytoplankton) and microbial processes, and to highlight the gaps that need to be addressed in future research. In the following, a brief digest on oceanic microbes and their role is provided for readers unfamiliar with this topic. Then the research that has been performed to assess the effects of ocean acidification on the diversity and activity of heterotrophic marine microorganisms is reviewed. Finally, scenarios are developed and potential implications are discussed. Microorganisms are defined as organisms that are microscopic, i.e. too small to be seen by the naked human eye, and mostly comprise single-celled organisms. Viruses are sometimes also included in this definition but it is hotly debated whether viruses are alive or not (Raoult and Forterre 2008). The current phylogeny considers three domains of cellular life, the Bacteria, the Archaea and the Eukarya.

Abstract:
Wave-induced seabed instability around marine facilities has been recognized as a key issue in the design of marine facilities. Most previous studies have been focused on individual issues in the area, without a global consideration. This limits the research outcomes to pure academic research, and practical engineers are rarely to use it in the real design, as it is too complicated. In this study, first we establish a new model for random wave-induced residual pore pressure in marine sediments. Second, we integrate the new model with previous work, including analytical and numerical models, into a simple package (PORO-WSSI). In the model, a GUI (Graphical User Interface) will be included. The main feature of the PORO-WSSI will be outlined and numerical results will be presented and discussed.

Abstract:
Flexible marine risers are compliant to external forces from waves, current and platform motions, and clashing between risers is an important concern. In deepwater developments where the number of connected risers is large, it is not economical to space them too far apart. In this regard, it is necessary to establish the probability of riser clashing throughout the service life; however, at present there appears to be no systematic procedure for assessing this risk. This paper presents a novel procedure for estimating the probability of riser clashing based on post-processing results obtained from time domain simulations of flexible risers subjected to random wave loads. First, an efficient technique is employed to sieve out critical pairs among riser elements. From these element pairs, the time history of a normalized clearance parameter is derived from the nodal displacements of the elements. Subsequently, the mean up-crossing rate of this parameter is extracted and extrapolated to the threshold of clashing using extreme value theory. As this method is still in its early developmental stage, critical effects such as vortex-induced vibrations and wake interference will not be considered in the present work.

Abstract:
There is a price to be paid to achieve compliance with the acoustic requirements imposed by regulatory agencies. Acoustic requirements typically appear in ship specifications as airborne and/or underwater radiated noise limits as the need to preclude hearing loss for crew members and the need to control sound levels experienced by marine mammals receive more recognition. Recent changes and additions to regulatory body requirements addressing compartment airborne noise and underwater radiated noise can be found in IMO Resolution MSC.337(91) Annex 1 and Annex 2 which state that IMO Resolution A.468(XII) “Code on Noise Levels Onboard Ships” shall take effect on 1 July 2014 for all SOLAS compliant vessels. Thus the airborne noise levels in compartments and at on-deck work stations onboard as-built ships seeking a SOLAS certificate will need to be measured, and must demonstrate compliance with noise limits stated in paragraph 4.2 of IMO Resolution A.468(XII). IMO “Guidelines for the Reduction of Underwater Noise from Commercial Shipping to Address Adverse Impacts on Marine Life” dated 7 April 2014 and agencies such as ICES and DNV have established guidance and/or criteria for control of underwater radiated noise from vessels, and these too are now commonly appearing in ship specifications. Specifications referencing such criteria typically require that compliance be demonstrated by at-sea testing of underwater radiated noise. Making the correct decisions during the ship design process will minimize costs for noise control and will provide a positive return on investment. The process of how best to comply with noise limits while minimizing costs through optimization of noise control treatments and design approaches is discussed.

Abstract:
According to climate change, design paradigm for Marine structure is being changed too. Many researches and practices are carried out countermeasures for climate change after extensive damage from TSUNAMI and Hurricane Katrina. And some of these activities are interest on fatigue crack problem. There are only few ways to prevent Marine structure’s fatigue failure as yet. Most one is applying safety factor to structural strength, another one is carry out fatigue status observation by naked eyes. But those ways have some problems about measuring accuracy and observing continuability. Also Carrying out Marine structure design depend on experiences about structural strength has possibility of in-efficiency. And it might not deal with structural safety ensuring by climate changing immediately. According to weather condition and observing location, it even should be impossible to continue monitoring. As previously stated, to improve problems of structural fatigue life monitoring system, this paper introduce convergence technology based on Ubiquitous network system through analyzing system requirements and developing system framework. Also we make a prototype and carry out test to confirm possibility of fatigue strength prediction system based on Ubiquitous sensor network applying to Marine structure.

Abstract:
Abstract Geophysical seismic surveys have been used in marine site characterization for subsea engineering and the design of offshore structures. Signal processing plays a key role in obtaining seismic attributes from observed seismic data to identify subsurface geological features within complex shallow sediments. Instantaneous amplitude, phase, and frequency are the most widely used seismic attributes to indicate geological features, but those time-domain data are too limited to define an accurate subsurface model in depth. Therefore, seismic inversion is also required to generate additional geospatial subsurface model information to aid in shallow stratigraphy interpretation. In this paper, we applied both geophysical signal processing and stochastic seismic inversion to a high-resolution multichannel seismic dataset from the Eastern North American Margin (ENAM). Seismic attributes from the Hilbert transform and inversion modeling results (acoustic impedance and modeling uncertainty) were integrated to define better geological horizons and discontinuities. The results show the integrated geophysical subsurface models can support seismic interpretation and improve shallow marine site characterization.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a two-body analysis for a moored ship sheltered by a breakwater in shallow water with and without free surface forcing in the low frequency wave load calculation. The low frequency wave loads are determined by second order interactions from the first order. The free surface forcing term arises from the free surface boundary condition, which is trivial to first order but is not at second order. We demonstrate in the frequency domain the importance of this term in a two-body analysis. Additionally, we show how inaccurate calculations of the off-diagonal terms of the Quadratic Transfer Function can translate to over or under prediction of low frequency wave loads on moored ships sheltered by breakwaters in shallow water. Low frequency wave load accuracy has direct consequence for LNG marine terminal design. Generally, LNG marine terminals are sited in sheltered harbors, however increasingly they are being proposed in offshore locations where they will require protection from persistent waves and swells. Since breakwaters typically cost twice as much as the rest of the marine facilities, it is important to optimize their size, orientation and location. In a previous paper we described this optimization process [1], which identified a key step to be the transforming of waves just offshore the breakwater into wave loads on the moored ships. The ability to do this step accurately is of critical importance because if the loads are too large, the breakwater will be larger and more expensive than necessary and if the loads are too small, the terminal will experience excessive downtime and loss of revenue.

Abstract:
Ozone has an important but as yet largely unfulfilled role to play in reducing damage to marine ecosystems, as well as, improving the onboard environment and living conditions for all shipboard personnel. Ozone can provide pure and safe potable water that is critical to vessel safety as pure water has an immediate impact on the health and morale of both crew and passengers. Ozone can also be the central player to eliminate chlorine in the disinfection of sewage in a new type of MSD that recycles the water for reuse in toilets. Controlling the spread of non-indigenous, invasive species transported in ballast water is another beneficial and valuable application of ozone The in situ purification of potable water in the holding tanks is in use 24/7 aboard four US Navy-owned ships, Research Vessels Knorr, Atlantis, Roger Revelle, and Melville and one NSF-owned ship, R/V Oceanus. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution was the first to opt for an ozone-based Water Quality Assurance system to treat water stored in the ship’s fresh water holding tanks in 1996andwith immediate success of the first installation the rest followed soon thereafter. The most recent installations of the Chem-Free WQA (Water Quality Assurance) system aboard new US Navy vessels are AGOR 27, R/V Neil Armstrong, commissioned in April 2014, and AGOR28 R/V Sally Ride. Ozone is also being used on board yachts from 31 ft. to over 300 ft., both power and sail, for indoor air quality and odor control, as well as odor control in the headspace of black and gray water holding tanks and simultaneous treatment of potable water. The marine environment, be it fresh, brackish, or salt, is exceptionally delicate. Environmental changes wrought by the activities of human activities worldwide are happening far too rapidly for marine species to evolve strategies that are necessary to successfully deal with them. Maintaining the health and viability of the marine ecosystem is absolutely essential to protect all aquatic life forms, as well as, humanity itself and preserve them for posterity. This paper will details several uniquely different applications in which ozone can best be used to the benefit of the marine environment on both outside and inside a vessel’s hull.
