Full textThe theme of this thesis is the study of the two essential antagonistic female figures of christian imagination which are the virgin mary and the amazons as they were envisaged at the time of the conquest, and see how they corresponded the female figures of the indigenous imagination in the xvith and xviith centuries. The amazon, the woman of the discovery and imprecise frontiers was a myth still very much alive for the men of orellana's expedition - a comparative study of the two manuscripts of the expedition will be found in the second part of the thesis - , and for the jesuit missionaries in the xviith century. This myth came into contact with that of "the country inhabited by women", an indigenous myth of the forest, but for the creole peruvian society as well as for the spaniards, the amazons were merely an allegory. The virgin mary, essential figure of the conquest, becomes more and more a warrior, and her apparition in cuzco where she thwarted the indians victory over the spaniards becomes a foundation myth of colonial order in the xviith century. The importance of the immaculate conception underlines the political role of the virgin mary in peru, just as the spanish crown sees her army's decline in europe. 51the indians subjected to evangelisation and victims of the policy of extirping idolatry, found comfort with her, but a way of resistance too

Full textA competition for poetry in praise of the immaculate conception of the virgin, the "puy de palinods", was held annualy in rouen from 1486 until the revolution. It is studied from its origins until 1550 with the intention of showing its poetic and ideological originality. The first objects of analysis are the history of the cult to the conception of the virgin and the theological evolution which, from the 11th century to the renaissance, provided the context for this emphasis on the immaculate conception. The literary documents which bear witness to militant "conceptionism" are then taken into consideration, before exploring the iconographical material which shows the peculiar imagination of the cult of mary. The second part provides an historical and literary panorama of what is known of the period and the milieu, exploring the activities which occurred during the day of the competition, the bourgeois and poetic circles upon which the competition thrived, as well as nearby "puys" and other poetic products of rouen. The "puy" was an important stage in the cursus honorum of the city and exercised a profound influence upon its thought and aesthetics. Lastly, the analysis of several manuscripts reveal the issues raised by such poetry and the different forms of distribution of the poetry of the "puy de palinods". The third part shows how these works combine a constant religious reference and a search for poetic imagery and moral meaning. All of these domains offer meaning, from nature to human activities, whether noble or humble : by recourse to theological reflection, humanity participates in its own redemption and its work becomes an offering to the creator, worthy of the poetic act. An appendix assembles descriptions of the manuscripts studied, biographical notes and numerous previously unpublished texts
Mimouni, Simon Claude. "Genèse et évolution des traditions anciennes sur le sort final de Marie (la Dormition et l'Assomption)." Paris, EPHE, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992EPHEA002.
Full textBefore the 8th century, ancient traditions concerning the Virgin Mary’s final fate are numerous and extremely complex. Literary traditions concerning the Virgin Mary’s dormition and assumption constitute a central element of these traditions. A study of their clarification and historical situation cannot be achieved without an examination of topological traditions. The present research aims at clarifying the origins and evolution of these ancient traditions with a combined study of literary and topological traditions. The main objective of this research is to come to a better understanding of these numerous traditions. These ages should be taken primarily as a preliminary study for a critical edition of these texts often entitled under the generic designation "history of the dormition and assumption of Mary". A survey of groups of traditions, with their own history of contacts and influences, leads to a more precise knowledge of the origins and evolutions of beliefs which will lay a leading role in Christian spirituality and doctrine this survey of traditions brings to light in each group of texts one or several texts of manor importance, although it is not acknowledged until now. The study of sanctuaries, feasts and traditions related to the marial cult of the holy city and is environment substantially contributes to the history of Jerusalem

The ever growing pregnance of profane motives and the political use of the saint by the duchy of burgundy. The study finally approaches the role of mary magdalen in medieval dramatic art, from the liturgical latin drama to xvth century passion mysteries, that is to say, from allegory to ecclesial didactism

Full textA woman with a singular destiny, the Virgin Mary has caused interest, enthusiasm and even passion throughout the centuries of the Christian era. She has inspired artists, writers and preachers; and her life has been the object of narratives to be imitated. The Life of the Virgin can be found over the course of the history of Syriac literature. There are no fewer than 23 Syro-Oriental manuscripts that have come down to us. They are relatively recent. There were copied from 1243 to 1917 AD, with roots in much older texts. In the first volume, a copy of a manuscript from the end of the 13th century, kept at the monastery of Our Lady of the Seeds in Alqoš, in modern day Iraq, has been chosen, because of its exhaustiveness to serve as a complete edition and a first translation into French. It contains a very important critical apparatus since it compares 18 manuscripts, unfortunately, however, 5 manuscripts are not accessible currently. This apparatus complements this edition and allows for the establishment of a stemma which clarifies the existence of four families of manuscripts, with a single manuscript, that is a copy of an original Syro-Oriental version now lost. In the second volume, the commentary on the text underlines the uniqueness of this Syro-Oriental Christian apocryphal writing. It is clear that its author wants to announce Jesus Christ who, by his incarnation, comes to restore fallen creation to its original harmony and to redeem humanity. He does this by presenting the life of Mary, his mother. She is then the woman who transcends all times and places and becomes the incarnation of the éternel féminin

She is the mother who must brace herself to be ever after conjured up in relation to the past and the sweet times of childhood only. She is the mother whom the dying soldier calls on | the ground of the battle waged in the name of the land that, in order to be most defended, calls itself »motherland ». The mother is indubitably a woman in tears. She is the mother of the Annunciation. The Annunciation announces the birth of the Christ, at the same time, foreshadows the tragedy of the Passion and of his death. Reguig, Delphine. "Le corps des idées : pensées et poétiques du langage dans l'augustinisme du second Port-Royal." Saint-Etienne, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003STET2078.
Full textThanks to urgent argumentation caused by controversy, the "second" Port-Royal, led by Arnauld, made use of the Cartesian dualism of body and mind in order to renew Augustinian semiotics. Port-Royal was at the origin of reflections about meaning, which go beyond linguistic and grammatical matters in order to include the moral disposition of the speaker in his verbal experience. For speech to produce meaning, language must be used as a faculty suppressing the distance between body and soul, between expression and thought, between the world and inner life, between man and God. The necessity of effective and meaningful speech may account for Port-Royal’s influence on literary circles. The novel La Princesse de Clèves and Racine's tragedies, in particular, reflect Augustinian concerns about the value of speech, its relation with human inner life, and the relation it establishes between man and the world

Full textThe dramatis personae of Mary in La Présentation de Marie au Temple, Les Miracles de Nostre Dame par personnages and Le Mystère de la Passion d’Arnoul Gréban is at the intersection of languages, poetical genres, and places where drama is performed. Her character is inspired by the Christian faith in the Incarnation: within the Virgin was incarnated the Word of God who, in his human form, in the person of the Son, spoke to men. The fundamental affirmation of Christianity underlines the importance of the Word. Nevertheless, the New Testament is discreet about Mary, while the religious plays show the mother of Lord characterized by a self-expression, a mainly lyrical one. Inspired by texts in Latin and in vernacular, from literary and rhetorical texts, and under the influence of social realities, the character of Mary is at the confluence of these currents that she transcends and, at their interstice, models a new way of expressing faith, to which the dramatic form gives a collective dimension. Based on the material and poetical analysis of the manuscripts, this thesis aims to show the dynamics that give life to Mary in theatre and the repercussions of her character on the poetry of the dramatic text, as well as on the communities it engenders
Petrick, Vicki-Marie. "Le corps de Marie Madeleine dans la peinture italienne du XIIIe siècle à Titien." Paris, EHESS, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012EHES0087.
Full textThe goal of this thesis is to show the density of meanings that inform the plastic and iconographic choices made by Titian for his Pitti Magdalen, examining it in light of the visual traditions of the Magdalen in Italy. To do this, the dissertation goes back to the visual codes established in the 13th century. This study brings forward the means by wich women's bodies may be bearers of theological meaning, beyond that of sin and temptation. A first part establishes the foundations. One chapter approaches the anthropology of the Christian body, another the construction of the "character" of Mary Magdalen and themes associated with her, a third stuides these first plastic formulations in the mediterranean basin. A second part is consecrated to the cycles that present her Vita : the Florentine pala of 1285, the Assisi Magdalen chapel, and the Magdalen chapels of the Bargello and Santa Croce in Florence. The chapters bring forward the dynamic in wich the spectator relates to the figure as an example of sinful flesh converted. A last part proposes a diachronical analysis, on a large temporal scale, from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries the principal iconographical signs that distinguishe her : the color red, the hair, the tears, the vase and the perfume, all the while giving particular attention to the regional variations between Tuscany and the Veneto. The final chapter converges the results of the first chapters in the analysis of the Titian Magdalen who appears as an end point in the plastic and conceptual research conducted since 1270

Full textIn the baroque age, all over Europe, but especially in Italy, the character of Mary Magdalena, present in all arts, seems to be definitely one of those symbols that build up the collective subconciousness of a generation. One of the major themes that express the imaginary as well as the reality of a civilisation. Being a true literary and social phenomenon, this saint character seems to be totally adapted to this period which is disperately in search of an expression for its deepest emotions, by way of a figure, sanctioned by the authaurity of the catholic church

Full textViollet-le-Duc accounts “style” as «the expression of an ideal, founded on a principle» in which principle embodies the principle of order of the structure. The latter must aswer directly to the Law of “units” that must always be respected in the design of the architecture. Starting from this central crux of the mindset of Viollet-le-Duc, this research has the goal of exploring the links between theory and practice in the work of Viollet-le-Duc, in which the “style” marks a constant thread, arising as a possible intepretation of this starring figure in the history of architecture and restoration of the nineteenth century. The research project focuses on a new reading of both published and unpublished documents, in addition to a careful bibliographical and documentary survey and a direct study of architectures. The examination of the archive is dedicated to the systematic analysis of the original drawings of projects and to the technical connections among the works of Viollet-le-Duc. Starting from this first investigation, two case-studies emerged as especially significant under the elected subject matter: the restoration project of the Madeleine a Vezelay church (1840-1859) and the work of the Maison Milon in rue Douai a Paris (1857-1860). Through the simultaneous work of analysis of the case-studies and the writing of Viollet-le-Duc, they tried to verify the possible correlations between theory and operational practise, comparing the projects to both the theoretical works and the tangible evidence of the buildings

Full textThis study, in essay rather than thesis form, suggests an approach to the love casuistry and rhetoric of desire in the novels of madame de lafayette. It deals principally with the first important novel, zaide, written before la princesse de cleves. What do questions about love stemming from preciosity signify? did they form, during this period, a linguistique response concerning passions of the heart? this question is first adressed in four short chapters dealing with literary sensibility, then by a double hypothesis focussing on the generic of love and the genesis of narrative, followed by an analysis of the concept of casuis try along with "case studies", and, finally, by a study of mme de lafayette's own discourse of love, a discourse which forms a veritable rhetoric of desire. These issues are, in conclusion, put into a moral perspective. Individual destiny and the universe of the novel assume their place in the history of sensibilities

Full textThe word and the theme of "desire" saturate the narrative works of duclos, and relate to the theme of predation and libertinism in the subversion of the model provided by la princesse de cloves. "libertinism", as designated by robert darnton in clandestine literature, "sensualism", contingent thought, with its original rooting in the individual point of view, the autobiographical foundation provided by novel-memoirs in the 18th century, the language, all favour the "discourse" of duclos, which captures the essence of libertin discourse, the rising social milieu it represents and its literary mobility. The sceptical and feminist "desire" of the author, like the literary salons of the period, affirms desire as theatre and representation, resolution of happiness; and his "discourse", sometimes erotic, sometimes ferocious, announcing that of sade, but not pornographic, reduced to the discourse of love and to love's strategies, providing a literary model which will be followed by stendhal, responds to the natural emergence of desire by the demonstration of literary talent and "emergence" in life. We have recorded the occurrences of "desire" and analysed the rhetorical strategies at work, comparing the novels written by the author in linear, chronological order with the progression of his thought and moralist mise a distance. The thesis is based on the conflagration of two main texts, the archetypal novel of la princesse de cleves and the narrative works of duclos, and proposes a commentary which meets with the works and analyses of jacques brengues

Full textThe declaration of love is, from the linguistic point of view, the statement, and, from the literary point of view, the part of a text, which serves to analyse the novel's fiction mechanism. The study of three works : Mme de La Fayette's la Princesse de Clèves, Balzac's le Lys dans la vallée, Marguerite Duras's l'amant, shows an incompatibility between the declaration of love, which is essentially performative, and the narrative means of representation which characterizes the french tradition. In fact, studying the declaration of love in novels is tantamount to studying the writing of novels itself. The analysis of these three works will, it is hoped, help to explain what is specifically literary in the novel - in other words, the concept of utterance, which cannot be separated from that of writing to or for someone

Full textThe period between 17th century and the early stages of the Enlightenment is a pivotal one in fiction writing. This is not only because the concept of pathos acquired a profane dimension, but also a moral rehabilitation and an aesthetic development that contributed to make of it a major literary trend by the end of 17th century. However, the concept of pathos and the way it was developed in the women narratives of 17th century has hardly been the subject of any thorough readings. Moreover, the studies focusing on the fiction of that period, did not suggest any input to the concepts of pathos or the pathetic in their index table. To avoid the dangerous side of passion, the writers under focus, are proven to incline themselves to verbal linguistic censorship that pins down the exalting dimension of the passionate discourse. This censorship over-emphasizes both the crisis of the love subject and the failure of communication. As an alternative ! to the narrow dialogic space where pathos could have been expressed; women writers relied on the expressiveness of the body and the non-verbal language. Meta-linguistic signs pervade the texts, emphasizing both the dispositio and the elocutio of fiction; creating, thus, a space where love intrigues could be voiced. A space that makes of silences, gazes and tears important modalities of a new communication strategy implying a constant hermeneutical work. A thorough examination of the novels of Mme de Lafayette and Catherine Bernard, allow us to demonstrate that the tendency of women fiction writing towards somberness and pithiness, is a kind of evolution that owes much to the representation of the concept of the pathetic

Full textThe present research attempts to focus on the seventh centenary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi (1226- 1926). This work will study three authors who had paid homage to the saint: Michel de Ghelderode (1898- 1962) with Images de la vie de saint François d’Assise, Henri Gheon (1875-1944) with La Vie profonde de saint François d’Assise, and Déodat de Basly (1863-1937) with La Christiade française. Under hagiographic, poetic, and theological approaches, this work intends to dip into a broad perspective of literary representations of St. Francis, in order to trace a literary landscape that focuses on the chosen era
